Hello again, today I'm ranting about the weirdest (derogatory) kids books I've covered to date as well as a certain ukelele playing youtuber who has spent 15 years making bad content for kids, among other things.
By now you've heard of Colleen Ballinger and her creepy behavior towards kids. I know no one needs to hear another person weigh in but I'm angry and this will hopefully help me stop ranting about this to my family and friends.

At this point the Colleen Ballinger news has hit mainstream news media. And more stuff just keeps coming out, it blows my mind every time I learn something new. It's kinda hard not to hear about this. Also it doesn't help the song gets stuck in your head, it's catchy, which makes it worse.
Also all aboard the whole "aw I loved this as a kid, wait what ew no yikes, why was this socially accepted at the time, now i feel awkward and conflicted with this piece of media I loved that shaped me, but there's yikes parts, and now I'm in this state of dissonance" train.

Yeah I was singing the song while doing my makeup and felt insane. I believe that it's important to appreciate content that you're nostalgic about for what it did for you in the past but also look at it with a critical eye. Sometimes it holds up and sometimes you can let it go. I know it can be tough though.

Sailor Moon isn’t originally for young kids. In Japan it’s for teens and adults (like most anime).
When anime was becoming more popular in the west during the 90’s/2000’s the idea that cartoons are only made for children was very strong. This caused many early translation and licensing companies to butcher a lot of shows to try to force them to be appropriate for young children.
Eventually most of these shows got newer English versions which are closer/more accurate to their Japanese counterparts.
Except for Pokémon, where the English and Japanese versions are still different to the point of almost being considered separate shows by fans.

    • @AveryTalksAboutStuff
      @AveryTalksAboutStuff  Год назад +3

I mean in sailor moon's case it did debut in a shojo magazine which means it was aimed at girls 12 to 18 so I still call it a kids show. And the DiC dub which the novelization is based on is definitely for kids.

I know it's not the best approach, but with most drama issues that happen in the world like this I give them a wide berth and try to ignore them as best I can because I feel like there's nothing I can personally do about the situation and I have to think about my psyche a bit. I come back to it every now and then and let it inform me, just because curiosity kicks in. So thanks for the coverage and the rant.

I think you added a lot of great and valuable points to the conversation!
By this point, it no longer surprises me when children's content creators (particularly youtubers) are exposed for predatory behavior like this and I'm right there with you in your anger about it. I regularly work with kids in an educational context, so I try to be aware of these things and teach them about online safety/media literacy because most of the time their parents just put the ipad in front of them without a second thought and a lot slips through as a result. At least that way I can have a meaningful conversation with them about it or encourage their parents to have a conversation with them because that's a whole heck of a lot better than either extreme of 1) leaving them unsupervised to be exposed to potentially harmful content or 2) just banning everything deemed "bad", aka: "difficult" to talk about!
Anyway, on a lighter note: "I'm not sure why I told you all of that, but I found out that information at 2:30 in the morning and I just wanted you to know it" is the way I live my life, so I appreciate and respect that you included your findings. XD

When you point out Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon was never meant for kids. It was meant for 16 and up which is kids but still mature than what the Dic dub has you believing. You gotta remember in Japan what's deemed appropriate there isn't the same as the west. In Japan sexuality and nudity is different, it's more so less taboo in public and even more so in some European countries. My relatives went to Italy once and there was a lot of well...naked statues and paintings. It depends on the point of view of the culture really. There's also artistic nudity which I just mention with the naked statues. In the old anime of Sailor Moon and in the manga, there are instances where the characters are show naked to show vulnerability but again it's more so "Barbie Doll" nudity where no bits are shown. It's just to show the character's human side.
Sorry the long comment! Though I do agree with that you said, I just wanted to point out some stuff. I never heard about this but wow! This is a prime example of people just botching their life in the worst way possible!

Clearly that book is a horror novel. My own channel while I post all these demos of animatronics that are kid friendly I'm not really targeting them. A lot of the props are from the early 2000's and 2010's which a lot of my friends and myself grew up with. No wonder she always gave me the creeps, even back in her main hayday of being a ytuber. My only exposure to her is when she appeared in some Rewinds, seeing her face on books, and parodies that other channels were making about her.
And I do agree with the second half talking about outdated/ more mature content in childrens books, especially chapter books. I read the big series you mentioned minus the Sailor moon novels and Modelland but I wanted to bring up an example from a more mature series with stand alone books, Torchwood. While not targeted at children specifically but as the more adult Doctor Who spin off had a book about one of the main male characters waking up with the body of a girl and then his entire personality and character got deleted basically to be a most basic women stereotypes ever. While yes the book itself could've totally worked in a way of showing how different women experience sexism but the executation of the book flopped hard. The author, whos male, has written one other book for Torchwood and it was better than Almost Perfect so we genuinely don't know who dropped the ball on that one.
As someone who sees the character in question as a beacon of chosen gender get turned into my assigned gender at birth def creeped me out along with the fact that gender swaps don't always work depending on the series and Torchwood was one of the not working ones.

If her apology/explanation from 3 years ago that I keep hearing about was so genuine/true that is absolved her of everything and 110% cleared her name, why the hell wouldn't she just say "This is about "event x" from "timeline y". Here's my video talking about it in "timeline z""? Unless these videos/screenshots are from after that event/timeline, and she think she shouldn't have to be held accountable and forced to explain everything twice. After all, people know her, so they should just watch and accept her previous screw up apology, and then just guess that she have proof this time as well and that she's feeling the same way now and have totally learned/changed yet again, so that she can just go on her merry way after any screw ups that happenes after "event x". So instead of spending her time coming out with a genuine/heartfelt apology, since she's going against her PR group anyway, she just wrote and sings this little "Lalala, I am innocent, lalala, this is all lies, lalala, you're in the wrong for being mad, lalala, I know the truth but I shouldn't have to prove it" text

That dark things do exist and it's important to value their blessings all the more because of that. Even with cartoons on TV my mom asked me if I would want kids to watch south park? I said I wouldn't want kids to see me watching South Park. I love the show but that is not kid friendly. And when they have a cartoon like on Disney channel or cartoon network and it has adult themes. You tube has been horrible with this. What is this stuff? I am very up on things and I never find stuff like this that kids are up on. I am into millions of things for real not just a saying. I never see this crazy stuff on my own that kids are watching.

What was that book about the ten-year-old (I think?) who started like a whole kissing competition or something? and the teachers were doing pretty much nothing to stop it through the whole story. I think it was from Apple Books, too. It did at least end with none of the fifth graders actually wanting to follow through on kissing in the end, and doing a trivia thing instead, which was a pretty good ending, but I just remember all of us in chat being incredibly uncomfortable for the whole thing, and I think requesting that the youngin' remove themselves for that particular stream.
(The rest of this comment is kind of rambling and probably too long; you have been warned.)
I don’t know; I guess that kind of thing gets complicated because of how young kids are when they start getting into that level of physical affection and how big a deal one thinks that is, and having crushes at that age is perfectly normal. I don’t think kissing is that big a deal in and of itself, necessarily. I had a "girlfriend" when I was 10 or 11. But I'm pretty sure I "married" a kid under the willow tree at daycare, too. Having a "girlfriend" when I was ten meant holding hands under the table in class and going to the fifth grade dance with her. It's about as close to playing house as it is to an actual relationship, just a basic part of how children learn to become adults. And afaik, it's perfectly normal to start having sexual feelings and exploring yourself when you're around that age (and even younger in the latter case), and kids should know that.
But kids *worrying* about having kissed someone by high-school, "lost their virginity" before they even graduate, really the whole "kids getting older younger" thing in general is largely *because* we have so much media that isn't appropriately for its actual audience and/or features teenagers doing things that aren't even necessarily developmentally appropriate. And sometimes, this is partially because the actual audience doesn't match the supposed target, which gets into a parenting thing. But there are so many shows featuring teenagers, high schoolers, acting like people in their twenties (or acting like children and doing things that make sense for people in their twenties.) And l don't know who the real viewership or the genuine target audience is for something like Riverdale or Gossip Girl, but even if we're talkiing about teenagers, they're getting this idea of what they should be doing and be ready to do that just isn't true. Middle-schoolers and even younger kids get the same kind of messaging.
Casting is a huge issue, too. People in their twenties have gotten through the awkward puberty things. But if you cast them as teenagers, teenagers will feel like that's how they're supposed to look.
A lot of this would be helped tremendously by shows for teenagers and adults that are about highly sexualized characters, which often don't even really show the characters being in high-school, were just aged a up a couple years to be in college. Why not do that? What's going to suffer from that? What's going to suffer from that change that isn't your viewing numbers from preteens/young teenagers?
I started watching Buffy when I was about five, I think that was a net positive in my development, so I'm absolutely not saying that there is some kind of hard viewer/character age thing. Most of what I watched wasn't targeted at me, but I think it was a lot more appropriate than a lot of what was. There is definitely stuff in Buffy that I would want to talk to my kid about if I had a kid who was watching it now (like the entire Angel/Buffy relationship, because I will not believe that Angel was supposed to be anything other than a grown-ass man while stalking a fifteen-year-old) but between Buffy and Xena I got some solid female empowerment and wlw role models. But that's partly because I wasn't allowed to watch season six of Buffy--especially the finale--until much, much later. (Parts of 7 were apparently the subject of much debate. I think there was a human-on-human violence issue.) A lot of what I watched was aimed at adults, and a lot of it was much more appropriate than some of things targetting my demographic.

The Kissing Contest by Dian Curtis Regan! I forgot about that one until the video was almost out the door so it didn't get added but maybe I'll do a short about it. I totally agree that there's a difference encouraging what's normal at a certain age and displaying grown up things to kids way too young. I feel like gravity falls and the owl house do well with showcasing typical preteen romantic feelings without it ever feeling weird or inappropriate. I think this is a problem where parents aren't always up on what their kids are into and what we're seeing is the real life consequences of that.

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Owl House is so good! Except I haven't actually finished watching it yet....😑
I do that a lot. I get to the end or right before climax is about to really, well, climax, and then stop. I think it is probably partly not wanting to be done or being too anxious about the characters. I happens a lot when I hit the spot in the arc where everyone fights with eachother or gets separated, too. And then the period between putting off watching something and ADHDing myself to a totally different interest is very short.
A slightly different thing, but one of my favorite models for kids of adult romantic relationships is in Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, which I haven't seen the last season of, but from what I have, Eugene and Rapunzel are so good together. Right from the special that sets the show up, I think, Eugene proposes to Rapunzel l lduring a feast (possibly in her honor?), and she says no because she is not in a place to commit and settle down the way he is asking. Here is the good part: as soon as they get a chance to really talk after that (once plot things have happened) he actually apologizes for putting her on the spot in front of people. He also tells her that she doesn't need to apologize when she immediately gives one back, which is particularly good given that her description of yelling and leaving is in no way what happened, and I'm not actually sure if that's a mistake thing in the writing or just an intentionally written trauma effect from how she was raised. But my favorite is the end of that conversation, when he tells her that he admits that he doesn't totally understand why she said no to the proposal (despite still wanting to be with him), but that he loves her and he promises to keep trying every day until he does.
Just the fact that he recognized that proposing to her the way that he did was not okay and that he apologized should not be a big deal, but that alone is standing in the face of very nearly everything I've seen on TV since I was a kid, and I love seeing the kind of relationship modeling those two have in general coming from a Disney Princesses.

    1. Well there's a person and possibly issue I have NEVER heard of before . Contributing to the question "Is my internet experience the same as the rest of the world? Despite millions of views. no, no it is not.
Im also waiting for the issue to start
Also 15 years of internet? If you Grew up on the internet, you're young I was in my 20s when RUclips started. We had no internet at all till I was in my late teens.
If you are diving in to Elsa Gate territory RUclips being inappropriate is not new. Children just should not be given the internet and just aloud to watch it. Parents should watch with them and lean in to physical media or live TV. I can't even imagine what its like growing up on baby shark etc like When I was a kid we all watched the same shows now each different child can maybe see a completely different thing the others have not seen.
RUclips is the world of Fred and annoying orange. Its just not Mr. Rodgers. There's no quality control. Part of its appeal. Also part of its distain.
"Appropriate for kids" is really subjective. Some people would call "Turning Red" Inappropriate for children. Some people call The Simpsons "Inappropriate for children" or Captain Underpants "Inappropriate for children"
So like with "Cuties" or "Gender Quire" or Ezra Miller Im not clear on the full story because I don't have context for the subject.
and also what are "Children"? 5 year olds? 16 year olds? 19 year olds? 13 year olds? people toss the word around a lot. a 19 year old gets shot and its "A child got shot"
Older media books and TV shows and cartoons were full of content modern people are against. Those words have long been perfectly acceptable to say and many people are still not happy with the censoring. So some times when things are "Inappropriate" they actually are appropriate. Go farther back un time, go to an other culture, you'll see a ton of stuff made for kids we don't consider appropriate. Don Bluth gets super intense at times. Tom and Jerry, Loney Tunes, even some times Disney, Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, Little Audrey, Thundercats, other things they all have content we today would call not for kids.
The world's standards change from era to era and place to place. We read "The Trouble with lemons" in school and "Catcher in the Rhye" and "Flowers for Algernon"
and if you ever watch Jan Solo you'll hear how very messed up old books used to be.
Kids had inappropriate content shown to them very often in the 80s Monster Squad, Police Academy, The Goonies, Weird Science etc
overall Books should just have an age listed on the back. maybe also content. and there should be a consensuses what is appropriate or not. and if a book is questionable it should not be required reading. and if books do have nudity or profanity or sex and ARE kids books then we should put other books with the same content along side them. "Acceptable" for OUR kids means a different book with the same content is appropriate for "Your kids" Do not BAN Gender Quier while keeping The Killing Joke on the shelf. Both are kids books or both are not kids books. You can't have it be ok for one and not ok for the other.
I think what people are seeing in The Blue Lagoon, Cuties, The Goonies, Revenge of the Nerds etc is that children actually talk about this stuff actually do this stuff. its real. Children actually do talk and act this way. Seeing this in there cartoons and books and movies reinforces the idea its not wrong.
I feel that's why adults today are messed up. every thing from Cosbey Show to Legend of Zelda and Captain Planet told us how to act and some times those things had bad examples.
Kids need to see more shows like Owl House where they show the proper way to be in a relationship. With out being ham fisted, they showed how to be moral with your partner.
Weather or not fictional characters can be naked or in skimpy cloths or if they have to be covered and can't even show ankles its a culture gap issue. That content is not wrong, how we react to it is. it existed in the past and in the far past and it exists in other places. If we want to push for rights and fight for safety at the same time we need to decide together where the line will be drawn We can not be BOTH prudes AND also embrace Progressive ideas. These two things are opposites.
and in regards to Drag Queens, this too falls under "Maybe inappropriate" Both the costumes and the subject matter fall in that category
While that is some thing we need to define and be more inclusive with, at the end of the day no on e forces you to go to the event. YOUR children are not exposed to it. Other people's children are not your concern. Other people do as they wish and if you both leave each other alone all the better.
Also I would like the opportunity if invited, to list all sorts of media for you to view and judge on your channel. I'll include things I agree with as well as things I disagree with and then see where you alien with.

Northern america, mexico, brits in prticular from my experience seem to be extremely, overtly afraid of and unable to see nakedness as anything except erotic. Northern and eastern europe, japan, much of sub-saharan africa, a naked body is not actually automatically a sexual thing - communal bathing, public breast nursing etc is very popular.

I am not implying that men are more predatory in any way. Also, the point of specifying the age of fictional characters is not to say they are akin to living victims. The point is that for that to be written an adult had to think about underage people in that way which I find concerning. I am not in any way saying that it's the same as real life victims.
