I just found out you’re the Ethony that created the decks I have on my shopping list wow! So inspiring! This was very eye opening to how I’ve been navigating here on RUclips & TikTok. Definitely eased some fears I had. Ty I can’t wait to get your decks ☺️
Excellent food for thought. You’re right, the level of commitment is in the hands of the one who pays for the reading, It seems to me, most of the time people value something only when they commit financially, otherwise they don’t show up fully. Thank you, Ethony. 🧚♂️🍄❤️
I was giving free readings for over a year over fb to family, friends and acquaintances and I was on a roll, felt so connected to my cards and reading for people. And then I started asking for small amounts of money (ie $1/1card) and not a single person would ask for a reading or I would still get messages asking for free ones. It's excruciatingly discouraging. The free readings were so draining, I felt more drained after a day of free readings than I did after working an entire week at my day job. Again, discouraging. Thanks for your video ❤ love love love these types of videos!
It can be totally draining. The upside of this situation is that you KNOW that your friends and family aren't your ideal clients so that is good. There are plenty out there. I hope that comes across how I want it to. It is not fun when people close to us don't show their support unless it's free.
@@Ethony that actually makes perfect sense, thank you for giving your aspect! Sometimes it's hard to see the upside to personal situations. You're definitely right, I now know not to target those groups of people. No dark clouds needed over here 😁
:( ☹ Readings Are Very Taxing! Period! Free or Paid! They Drain Your Energy in So Many Ways! #1 Reason I Don't do Free Readings! And God Knows I Need All the Energy I can Get! :)
Thank you so much for all that you're doing with your videos, Ethony! I am a new subscriber and someone who is on a path of learning and figuring out what I want to do with my skills and I find your videos to be not only informative, but comforting and super helpful to my process right now.
I did alot of free readings but, the same people keep coming back asking me more and more questions. I am going to start giving my ebay reading links for repeat questioners. This is excellent advice Ethony, thank you so much.
This is all valuable advice, especially when reading for strangers. I come from a somewhat different place, in that I give free readings because I don't want to get into the hassle of a tarot business. The hustle, business side, and particularly dealing with taxes has always been a barrier to me in doing any sort of freelance / self-employed work. For me, this would make tarot less enjoyable. But I have the privilege to be employed and able to support myself, so that tarot is just a side thing. I typically do readings for friends online and for co-workers in person. I like the relaxed environment of giving free readings and it's particularly fun to expose people to tarot who are completely new to it. A lot of the folks I read for have never received a reading, and it opens them up to tarot and maybe they go buy a reading in the future now that they've been exposed and realize it's helpful and not scary. So I think your advice makes sense, but maybe it's more relevant in the context of reading for strangers in a group or forum.
Well said Ethony! I found myself nodding in agreement throughout the entire video. I feel that if you do too many free readings that people don't think there are as valuable than as they would be had they paid for it.
Maybe giving free tarot readings is ok within Friends and family. I think readings use a lot of spiritual energy and should be paid at least for a small amount if people know that it's gonna be a begginers práctice, i am a professional actor and i used to get paid with food and a small payment for some early Jobs.
I want to thank you for your free reading Wednesdays and Fridays. It has been a wonderful tool over the year to help develop and deepen my knowledge and interaction with the tarot and readers. Of the 60 or 70 readings i have done i have had only 2 or 3 people who have flaked or not honored there agreement. Overall, everyone has been really nice and i have gotten good feedback and also given and received some amazing readings. This video should be required viewing before being a part of your Tarot Readers Academy. Thank you again.
I believe that free readings do help when you are at the beginning and you are still building your confidence or your business and try to find out how the whole thing works. But over time you have to step up and value your services if you don't want to get all drained for nothing. Doing a couple of free readings here and there from time to time is not a big issue, but I don't think that this is a sustainable situation in the long run.
Readings Period Paid or Free are All Both Draining! So if I am Going to Expel that Kind of Energy & God Knows I Need as Much as I can Get! I want to Get Paid $
Thanks, Ethony, you always give sound advice. I've just done my first paid reading. The cards turned out so powerful and synchronised. But I got absolutely no feedback, not even an acknowledgment that they received the email. It was so sad. Would love to have known if I got it right.
I don't get feedback from a LOT of my clients as a paid reader, often times when they book the next reading I will get feedback then but I don't hold out for feedback. They paid for a service. I delivered the service. Contract fulfilled. Feedback is awesome but I also don't expect it. I hope that makes sense.
I’m sorry, but i’m not getting the “risk”. Some of us are new to reading and giving a free reading is a way to practice, so in my opinion, both parties are getting something from the deal.
I have given free readings up until now, mainly for practice, but also because it is difficult to know how else to get some exposure when trying to go professional. I think this video has raised some excellent points and you have given me some stuff to mull over, especially regarding my expectations as the reader. Thanks for sharing.
Great advice Ethony. I am just starting out so I asked a friend of mine if I could do free readings for her friends because I need ppl to practice with. I don’t want to charge if I am no good you know? Seeing how that goes, then I’ll start charging clients
I am agree with you. Reading takes time, gives responsabilities. I read only for my friends directly face to face only but I am thinking to ask them to put few euros in a small bag for buy new tarot and oracle :)
I feel like, in some ways, a lot of these are as much 'shitty social media behaviour problems' as they are 'free reading problems.' I think a lot of these issues are lessened when the free reading is in person -- I've never felt my time wasn't valued, been refused feedback, encountered anger for giving the 'wrong answer,' etc., even reading for free for people I didn't really previously know. It's easy to treat someone poorly when you're interacting pretty much anonymously. That said, I'm not trying to build a client base or publicize myself -- just to read for myself and on occasion for folks who are interested. I appreciate what you say at the end, though, re: supporting the folks who are reading full time -- not only do reviews and experience definitely mean something, but I also think offering something (if not monetary, then a trade... I've been paid in baked goods before) is a way of demonstrating acknowledgement and appreciation of someone's time, energy, and skills.
I've been dabbling on one of these groups and you're advice couldnt have come at a better time. The energy in some of these groups are definitely off in my opinion...

SOOO GOOD! thanks!!!
Really well said 😊 Thank you for sharing ❤️
Thank you
I have had a friend who has hounded me on if i had done her reading and i told her give me tine to write it down that it takes time
Exactly, it takes time! That is frustrating that a friend would be impatient when you are offering them a free service!

Thank you. I give free readings in my live streams and you mentioned important details and topics I didn't consider. thank you!

Thank you, I am so glad you have found value in the swap threads.
What do you do if the person wants a refund because they say you were off on the reading? Just curious as I haven’t read for the public yet…
Great points, and learning or being able to say No is very important. Thank you!
So important!

Totally, 100% this!
I used to give reading on Reddit then I stop my energy was very low afterwards. Everyone wanted to get one and i was just tired.
Exactly the same
People love a free reading.

The Mystically Musing Mama That's just so rude and unappreciative. Sorry you went through that.

I love this! Like a deck tip jar :)
I usually only do Readings When a Friend or Family members ask :) or on my RUclips Channel..

For sure that is true, this is a problem that is made worse by it being online.
I have found trouble with people being interested in buying a reading. ..
As in trouble finding people to buy a reading?
Yes
I've been dabbling on one of these groups and you're advice couldnt have come at a better time. The energy in some of these groups are definitely off in my opinion...
Burner people... lol!! Can't believe some of the randomness you must encounter as a reader. Miss you heaps buddy x
Miss you too mate. Yeah there are days were I am like, you can't make this shit up!
