Disney Imagineers Develop Cutting-edge, Free-roaming Robotic Actor

  • Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development is developing a small-scale, free-roaming robotic actor that can take on the role of our similarly-sized Disney characters. Its tightly integrated design provides over 50 degrees of freedom in a compact platform that can walk, gesture, and emote in style. Using custom authoring tools that combine whole-body motion planning and traditional character animation, artists can quickly bring robotic characters to life with expressive motions and interactive behaviors. There are no immediate plans for use in Disney theme parks; however, a prototype in the form of Groot is being used to test unique traits, gaits and capabilities.

    "So just be aware: the characters do tend to wander a bit. Uhh, they’re left in some kind of "free-roaming mode" at night. Uhh... something about their servos locking up if they get turned off for too long. Uhh... they used to be allowed to walk around during the day, too, but then there was the Bite of '87."

      Boston Dynamics has had them beat for awhile now. Atlas has been doing flips for a hot minute already

    • @NEUR0MANCER_
      @NEUR0MANCER_ Год назад

      @@baitposter Of course ive seen that. But the robot is very top heavy. Eventually the design would have to be streamlined. But those machines are simply templates. They have figured out how to teach them to walk. so they will be upgrading machines all over from now on.
      Groot 2.0 will probably be a real as possible.
      The biggest problem for robots for a long time, is balance. The ability to walk, and use their limbs. This is why very early robots have been stiff or on wheels. You can get a patent from bostonDYN, and now apply what you learn to your own machines, and eventually they will be able to walk and run normally. That robot is just the ground work being laid down. And groot takes it further.
      The ability to build a real machine companion, is more than poissible now, its inevitable.
      The only question is, do we need them to be intelligent?
      I dont think so. R2 and C3P0 got by without the deep ability for thought, with the majority of their processing power going towards their jobs, and their personality, to be friend those around them. Star wars famously has droid's that dont think.
      Thats what we need. We only need to advance them in functionality. No intelligence is really needed. Dexterity.
      Personally Id rather see protocol droids like R2 or the droid from fallen order.
      A little helper that serves to help you make calls, play music, project holograms and help you do certain kinds of jobs, like mechanics, or play. Something agile, that can climb, and hang on without falling, that can rest on your shoulder or follow you around.

    the problem with animatronics is that somebody is definitely going to try and push it over. that's because they aren't people and you need something way more dextrous than even a human to be so light weight with it's weight distributed so unevenly that can get back up quickly enough not to be pushed over by some snot nosed kid.
