    I know you said you had toe touch but the 50:50 front shuv out looked good to me. I little tip that helped me with the kickflip is where your looking. I feel this is just as import with all tricks as foot position. When I'm kickfliping I try and look directly down at the board, don't look at the nose or where your flicking look right down at the middle of the board. I feel this helps to see when the board is fully flipped and ready for your feet to stomp it down. It also helps me to keep my shoulders straight.

    • @BenJaegerThomas
      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад

      Nice, I like this idea. I think I tend to look just in front of me towards my toe side. I also tend to be visualizing more in my minds eye what my body is doing or at least what I perceive it to be doing based on how it’s feeling. I then tend to match that up with the footage later so that I can see if what I feel like I’m doing is actually translating to action. Like, “I feel like I’m raising my back leg,” only to see in the footage that I’m putting it to the ground every time. So then I can tweak that and start to amplify the leg raise and feel what that feels like in my body to try and correct my form.

    Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben!!!!!!!! :-)
    I've been watching you, and your still improving. Normally I'd write a very long comment, but what I'm going to give you is some very simple advice for you to try:
    1) Ollie to manual: This is much easier if you have a curb to sidewalk scenario, or just a sidewalk that ends in a drop off the height of the curb. So now, you practice the ollie up and glide down the sidewalk. Once your confident, just do the same ollie, but barely push down the front foot and land in your manual. It is much easier to do this ollieing up onto something than just trying it in thin air. :-)
    Didn't I say I was going to keep it brief?
    2) That ollie to frontside grind on the box thingy is a much easier tip. You need to go faster for that one. Any trick that lands in a grind needs speed. If you go too slow, the trucks are going to stick. So increas your speed just a little at first and you will quickly see the difference.
    3) The ollie kickflip, your own personal pandoras box. This is tip is more of a, "try thins" approach. Quite simply, don't look down at your board. That simple! You know how when your cruising down the street on your board and you are completely at ease doing it. Your not looking down when your doing that. Your looking ahead, or left and write, but your able to stay in control. You have done so many attempts with ollie kickflips that there is nothing left to see. You need to look just a little further away, say 6 feet ahead of you on the ground. You will pay a lot more attention when you don't have your eyes to use. Instead you will feel your mistakes more. This sounds weird, but remember that when your trying it. I'm not saying this is a fast track method to land them, but you will focus alot more on why itd not flipping.
    You are a great inspiration to many skaters (including me) because you are so dedicated! You are appreciating skateboarding at it's purest level and you always keep trying. You will work on something with 50 misses before one landing. That is someone who is so into skateboarding that the skateboard cannot beat you! You are a patient guy, I've never seen you throw any fits (unless you edit them out :-) ), and the fight you put forth is incredible!
    You have to keep pushing it Ben, I need to see you learn all you want to on your skateboard, and prove to all of us that age doesn't matter!
    Old Time Skater
    P.S. OH! Contrats on your HBO thing-a-ma-jiggy, that's exciting!

    • @BenJaegerThomas
      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад

      Thank you good sir. These are all wonderful ideas to implement. I don’t really throw fits with this stuff no or edit them out. I’ve for sure gotten frustrated but as a general rule, and because anger is something very easy to give in to, I try to limit its hold on me. I’ll keep working at it and I think I can land a kick flip next session. I’ll work the manuals too if there’s some time.

    Hey! Congrats on the hbo stuff! I’m loving that you’re going hard with skating too! I have a few tips for you to help with kickflips a little bit (you’re doing great btw, this is just some things that helped me) it would probably help if you over emphasize bringing your back foot up and out of the way. Looking at some attempts you get a really good flick and it stays under you but your back foot stops it from flipping. Also, the board kinda shoots out in front of you on some attempts too, that’s from leaning a little bit too far back. Try dropping your front shoulder towards the nose of the board to really hone in that balance. Great job on the 50-50s and ollies, you’re killing it. Love seeing how much you’re progressing. (Sorry for the long comment)

    For really good manuals, there is a huge level of trust that you need to have in yourself. I guess that goes for most tricks, but I feel that mannies and nose mannies really require faith. Also, there’s a point in the manual where your balance just takes a “set”, a magic point where things just want to stay put. Really try to feel for that. When you let go and stop fighting it, it just feels like you can manual forever.

    • @BenJaegerThomas
      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад

      Thanks for this insight Kristopher. I feel like i can see that in others when i watch video parts. i'll keep trying to feel it out for myself. I think a big part of it's elusiveness is my failure to regularly engage my core. I need to work on strengthening my core and doing some balance boarding as well.

    • @TehAwesomer
      @TehAwesomer 3 года назад +1

      @@BenJaegerThomas The best tip I have on manuals (the one trick I'm legit good at, I have manualled multiple continuous downhill city blocks here in San Francisco...) is to start the manual by throwing your front hand up like you're a flamenco dancer. It's much easier to correct balance by coming down from a high front hand than to try to correct it by raising a low one. If you look at your footage, your arm is rarely above your shoulder as you start to manual.
      The other big piece of advice is that it will help you engage your core if you inhale just as you go into the manual. Inhale and simultaneously throw that front hand way up! 🙋‍♂️🛹
      Oh, finally, if you have a big wide cruiser with big thick wheels, try to practice manuals while rolling down a slight downhill grade on it. It's much easier to do that than manual a trick board with small wheels on flat.

    Dude. Mindfulness I've been thinking about lately. I feel like lockdown caused many of us to resort to too much time on social media to make up for the lack of actual personal connections with people. Too much time in front of digital screens has left all of us a bit frazzled.
    I dig the landing on your back wheels ollies. There is definitely a lightness and smoothness to your skating that is coming out. Your switch ollies have a nice fluidity, and your regular and fakie ollies onto the box look natural, and less forced. Your kickflips seem to be so close, but still need a bit more of that fluidity you're working on. I'd try them with a tiny bit of forward momentum, in the stationary position you're slightly rolling backward which might be throwing you off.
    Whatever you're doing, keep it up! You've really come far.

    • @BenJaegerThomas
      @BenJaegerThomas  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Jeff and yeah man, the mindfulness is really helpful during this time period. I feel like i've made a bunch of changes lately that align more with how i want to be spending my time and it starts with intention for sure and shifting some habits. Will definitely work the kickflips more in the next session. Stay well man.
