Have you ever grown an orchid in water?

- Your orchids aren’t afraid of a little water!
There are so many ways to grow orchids and orchids in water are so much fun! The trick is to ensure you don’t fill the container the entire way of water, just 1/3 and replace once a week. If your water evaporates throughout the week, don’t refill until it’s time to change what’s left of the water at the end of the week.
Fridays are my usual changing of water for my plants I water and I remember to fertilize the first day of the month when it’s not in bloom.
If you struggle with orchids, don’t be afraid to give it a try.
I tried rescuing an orchid, it was about to die, saw your previous video about putting them in water and she’s doing great!!! No blooms yet but she started growing another leaf - I’m so proud!
Just so you know Phalenopsis like the one in this video tend to bloom once or twice a year, so when it does it's reason to get excited!!
The fact that it is growing a leaf is a VERY good sign! It will give you a bloom when it is ready. They usually bloom once every year or 2 so a long rest is normal.
Mine did too! shes the best 🥰
But it’s different plant, first was yellow with big flowers, and now with small flowers and another coloure
@@nadjavaljakka6358 She showed us her speckly pink Orchid that was blooming, that she keeps in water. Then, she showed us how to "repot" an Orchid form bark into water, using a different plant. She had to do that to show us how to change the growing medium, because hers was already in water.
"sHeS bLoOmInG!!!" Had me dying😂💀
My ears 😂 it was funny
Same 😂😂😂
Same love her
She was sooooo cute 🥰! Show her love and excitement
Came here to say the SAME! She’s so squeaky and cute!!! ❤
This is what Tutorials should be. Short and directly to the point ☝️
Thank you
I got an orchid after I saw your last video and grew it in water. The flowers lasted a long time and then fell, followed your instructions with cutting- a new leaf has grown big and beautiful and it’s looking fantastic after months!
Yay! I’m so glad!!!
And new flowers grow?
@@PlantswithKrystal how do you differentiate roots form spikes? mine is also in the water but water changes its colour, so all of them look green to me 😅
Do you keep it water constantly or there is a time you let it stay outside the water medium?
@@dawnriddlerroots and spikes look similar when they first start. Spikes will grow straight up, but roots typically grow sideways and down, and have a rounded end. Once they get to be a little longer, it is easy to tell.
I inherited all of my grandma’s plants, including four orchids. I followed your tutorial on growing orchids in water, and now one regrew a whole stem and has buds, and another is regrowing part of its old healthy stem!
A magnificent wild orchid bloomed over boundary wall between my neighbour and I. It was during lock-down. It was baby pink with tiger stripes. It was telling me, "Life isn't so sh*tty afterall." Every day I walked past that part of yard, I greeted the pink orchid.
What a lovely story ❤
@@lindseyitamoto Just hoping I am not the only one who talks to plants. 😅
Orchids are truly one of a kind.
@@Ash_G I love talking to plants 😅

When you said your orchid was blooming and you've had it in water for over a year, my heart leapt! REALLY?!?! This is POSSIBLE?!?!
It is!
Orchid mafia gonna come for Krystal who’s teaching us how to save money and extend the lives of our plants! Thanks for sharing as always!
@mollie I’m LOLing cause that’s EXACTLY what I thought. Someone’s gonna call her a liar. My poor orchid just died so I’m definitely wanting to try this next
I know right ,Now I will find me one ! 😂
I thought orchids didn't like too much water???!!!! amazing!!
I have always been intimidated by orchids but I saw this video and now my little rescue orchid has started budding again! Thank you!
So cool to see someone else doing this!!! I keep all of my Orchids in water culture. I've kept them like this for many years. They all bloom every year. Some of them continue to bloom for 6+ months! My keiki (it's in water now) only has 3 leaves and is blooming its very first flower right now 🥰🌸
Yay! So awesome! I have my orchids in an orchid bark mix and then two others in water culture. I think it looks beautiful
@@PlantswithKrystal Oh how cool!! I agree, I absolutely love how it looks 🤩 And it's a great way to easily keep an eye on the health of the roots💚
😮🎉@@PlantswithKrystal😅
I am 100% on board with the hydroponics content!! Thank you so much
Thank you so much!!!!
It’s much easier to put your orchid in LECA clay pellets, so you won’t completely cover the root in water, the root needs air as well.
I don't cut the healthy spikes once done blooming. They have bloomed from the ends of the spikes while giving me additional spikes🥰
Honestly, putting my orchid in water was the best thing I ever did for it !
I honestly get up every day to take care my kids, and watch you're videos 🤣 your vibe just makes me happy 🤣 SOMEONE THAT GETS AS HYPED AS I DO FOR PLANTS!!!!
woah i never knew they could grow in water, now i need to set up a fish tank with a ton of orchids growing from the top. right now i just have one with pothos and monstera growing out
They cant rly, they can survive, but wont thrive in water. This is one of those "sensational" videos.
@@thea7826 what about in water with fertilizer in it? I grow a lot of hydroponic plants but my orchids are in soil. Wanted to try it but don't want to risk losing my orchids as they are old.
@@thea7826 even with the fertilizer? A lot in the comments are saying their plants are doing well. I don’t know anything about it really.
@@rebeccaspratling2865 you can go for the semihydroponic method with orchids, having water reservoir at the bottom of the pot and using inorganic medium as leca beads or seramis, this way the orchid will have airy media, but it is much easier to care for/water and it can grow and thrive this way - im talking about the moth orchid here as is shown in the video, not all orchids can handle this method. Growing orchids in water alone is complete opposite to how they grow in the wild - their roots are in the air, not in the ground, thats why they cant/wont thrive in water. For semihydrophonic videos with orchids you can check out youtube channel Astrid.
@@rockjockchick you have to fertilize orchids, they are quite hungry fellas,de epnding on species, but growing them in water is the oposite of how they grow in the wild - they grown in the air, their roots are in the air(talking about the moth orchid as shown in video) thats why we grow them in airy media as pine bark, leca beads, seramis... and not in water.
You just saved my orchids…
I was about to throw them away… thanks 🥰
Get all up in a there in that entanglement…..double entendre lol!
orchids secretly love water or Neglect. Just not the inbetween. As long as their roots are not in soil they seem to do fine. Mine live in orchid bark mostly in my laundry and will spike even when I straight up neglecting my plants for months.
Now I want to rescue an orchid!
Your excited plant mommy happiness makes me so happy 😭😂 luv ya girl! 🙏🏻❤️
I am confused though. I thought water on the roots too much of the time kills the orchid?
I just LOOOOOOOOOVE your energy 💜💜 that little dance for the bloom, GIRL! That's what I do 😂😂 I get juiced and just found the first orchid rebloom ever!
I've been looking at my orchid, who's climbing out of her own pot, and wondering what to do and this is it!
Love orchids, but they have a reputation for needing extra special care. You showed so many helpful tips. More orchid videos!
Found the video! Thank you. ❤️ I'm going to start transitioning my orchids from a mix to water.
Here for the update! How are they doing now?
Need an update too!!
I think more information would be helpful in the following way: orchids prefer wet dry cycles. So most orchid growers who do water culture do 2 or three days water, then 3-4 days dry. As in you put a small amount of water in the vessel then it may just evaporate by the third day, or empty it, and then leave it be for 3-4 days (dry). This mimics the wet dry cycles that they may have received in their native habitats. There is also concern of the roots which are adapted to organic material which won't adapt to the water culture, and new root growth is required to be adapted to this water culture method - thus the water culture may initially set the orchid back requiring it to grow new roots and drop the other roots. Most hybrid orchids you buy in grocery stores, or other conventional stores may adapt as they are pretty hardy, but they also may not, it really depends on the other culture (light, air circulation, health of plant etc.). So if one does do water culture for orchids, it may be helpful to provide a few more important details regarding the wet and dry cycles.
Your orchid videos really helped me, thanks so much! I just reported all three, they were all rotting in the roots and needed a trim so bad, (scolded my bf for letting them sit in water LOL) and one was even so compacted together down below so tightly in some moss like stuff, if it wasn’t for your videos it wouldn’t have been saved! ❤
i love hydroponics!
do i need special hydroponic-orchid-fertilizer or just regular liquid orchid-fertilizer?
My orchid is doing so good due to your help. It's actually outgrowing the plastic pot I have it in. So I'm going to do this water pot thing next. Thanks for the information. It is so helpful 😊
I have an orchid on its second bloom since I became ill after surgery and rather than let her die I just filled the pot with water. The buds that usually shrivel and die for me plumped up and now I have an amazing show of new flowers. I never ever had a second bloom on any orchid I’ve owned in 50 years until this one. I feed her once a month with house plant food and she looks amazing with dense green shiny leaves too.
I have had mine in water for almost 6 months. I found them in the trash at my work and brought them home as a rescue. So far so good. Thank u for all the great info
As soon as I heard, “She’s blooming,” I gave you a thumbs up. You were funny and sincere. I’m going to try your suggestion of putting my orchid in water. Thank you :)
"My Orchid; Sshheeessss Bbloomming".
👁️👄👁️ 😁
I have an orchid collection. I don’t need this information. And you are mad!! But I can’t stop watching your videos 😂 love your madness and addiction I have the same addiction with orchids ❤❤ 🙊🙈🤗
Oh, well good for you lol
MINE BLOOMED TOO!!! I rescued orchids from a local, and I have never owned one!! Now I have 7! 😍 I’m slowly learning!! Thank you!!
In order for the phalaenopsis to bloom it needs the temperature to drop at night and warmer during the day. Phalaenopsis are epiphytic, meaning that they cling to trees and absorb the nutrients from rainwater.
I wanted to say thank you!! All of these blooms are new, since I did what you said. Growing this plant in water, now I’m tempted to keep going with my other orchids
I saved two. They are my FAVORITE flower. I panicked when I saw them at the store and brought them home. My sister was helping me clean one day and asked if she could throw the dead plant out. Ohhhhhhh did I jump on her.
She thought it was dead because the flower was done and I didn't take it away yet. Yea, I don't think she will ever ask that question again😂
You are awesome!!!!
I appreciate you! Thank you!!!
Just rescued an orchid from my local grocery store and i HAD to see if you had a video on orchids, so so glad you do! Thanks Krystal!
The Byeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeh with jazz hands got me lol
Honestly I have learned so much from her channel. And she has fun doing it
The way you explain bright indirect light is fantastic, I finally understand
Thank you Krystal!! You literally helped me save my orchard. She is loving her new home in water.
I saw a mini orchid like that today!! I want one... And why do they always recommend to water tropical plants with ice cubes?? They don't get watered like that in their natural habitat... Like for instance I don't see a lot of ice cube's falling out of the sky to water the plants in Hawaii or Indonesia or anywhere else that's a tropical environment..
I think it's so it melts slowly and the roots take it in plus it limits the amount you put in. But lots of people say don't do that x
She's blooming!!!!🤣😂🤣 loved it
Krystal you’re so helpful and have the best energy. Thank you for existing on youtube!❤
I love ❤️ 😍 orchids. Yours look great 👍 👌.
"git all up in there" did it for me
I love the excitement you have rescuing plants!
I have one, which i got as a present. Due to a storm and a forgotten open window it fell down from said window on the 4th floor onto the drive way. I thought i lost it right then, but i did not want to give her up. I put it in water, its in water since about a year now and its blooming for the third time since the fall. Its beautiful and at the moment has 10 blossoms 🥰
Thank you. So simple and to the point and detailed. I have this problem. I want to have my orchids bloom. 👩💻
You are a comedian 😂😂
Always buy the orchids with the biggest leaves and healthy looking roots:)
I had an orchid from last mother's day. I decided to put it in water after I saw this. I like seeing the roots.
❤️ Thank you! So helpful! 💕
“shES BLOOMING” is giving “FRAANCE”
Love that scream of joy.😂😂 ❤
It's so awesome to see how many have been able to sace their orchids by following your advice. Gives me hope as a notorious 'plant killer' 😢
I tried this but they grew mold/fungus. Idk why, changed water and everything. Stunk up my kitchen and was generally a disaster, lost all my orchids 😩 I had had them previously for a few years in regular bark so needless to say I was devastated lol
How much water did you have them sitting in? The roots will rot if there's too much water. Personally having water all the time rotted mine so I had to do a 3 day wet, 3 day dry cycle
@@joshualawton57 I thought the same so barely any at all; I kept only a slight bit at the bottom for the roots to soak up but this white mold grew all over the entire root structure and part of the stem. Was a total loss of my orchids.
@@storeboughtramonaflowers when the roots go dry they turn to a pale white/green colour so it might have just been that. If you do ever try again the go 1/4 up the roots with water for 3 days then fully drain it for 2-3 days. On the dry days you'll want the roots to be that weird pale white/green colour
@@joshualawton57 I understand you and thank you for your advice. I've taken care of plants for 15 years. 💜 It was extremely putrid smelling and definitely mold. They died out.
Ahhhh, so pretty. Mine are sprouting stems right now and I'm so excited.
Your tutorials are fantastic!! Thank You!!!
Yay! Thank you so much! Happy I could help!
I’ve got a beautiful orchid that looks like yours, I’ve never done mine like you have yours, but tomorrow when I go to Walmart I’m getting a clear goldfish bowl and doing mine like this and see what happens, thanks a bunch, wish me luck and plenty of prayers 😊✝️❤️
That is the best description of indirect light I’ve ever seen
😂😂😂 I do the same sounds with my plants! 😝💚 so funny!!!
I’ve tried this with multiple orchids but every time all the roots rot and turn mushy, so I have to spend months regrowing the roots, trying to save it. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? 😢
I have this same problem. Only thing I can guess is that we're putting too much water and/or we're not changing the water often enough. I think I'm gonna try again.

She was almost surprised to see healthy roots 🤣
I had to hold my chest and gasp for air when I hear you say you could grow orchids in water! I'm running like Forrest Gump to get one 🏃♂️ Thank you for ALL your planty videos, they are unique and we love them!! 💦🌱💫
I was JUST about to give up on an orchid of mine I’ve had for 9 months. Thanks for the tip! There’s always HOPE!
Its so weird how plants can die from over watering but the same plant can thrive in only water 😂🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ I have 4 or 5 different plants growing in only water. I'm definitely gonna try an orchid!

And the rumor of his party
And the 'orchids' in his yard!
Oh he surely must be happy
With everything he’s got"
After having got my first two orchids, I'm saying to myself: "I cannot believe I finally have orchids!" People may think I'm surely got to be happy now!
thank you someone gave me an orchid, and they know that I love plants, but I’ve never had an orchid before… Your video was a savior, because I had no idea they tell me it’s never bloomed two weeks after having it it bloomed for me, but it’s the aftercare. I have no idea and now I do. Thanks to you
Until I watched your videos, I thought my orchids' silver roots were normal, but no - I've been over watering!
My Orchid was a $2.00 discount from the grocery store. Repotted in Orchid bark on the bottom, long fiber sphagnum moss in the middle and more bark on top. I mist it everyday and fully water it and let it drain once a month. It still has its spike and 2 new buds and a new leaf. First one I've been able to keep alive.
That plant is my nemesis 😂 and it's one of the plants that they give bad instructions for care of too. Don't use ice cubes to water them. It can shock the plants.
Whenever I think “do I have too many plants?” I just look at your videos and think NOT ENOUGH
I’m literally here for just this, got my orchid sat there looking at me to hurry up. 😊
Yesterday got an orchid for 1€ at Aldi, because it was in such a bad condition. All the roots except two little pieces were rotten. Even the sticks that held up the stalks were moldy at the bottom. I remembered your video, so I trimmed everything off, desinfected all that was left, rinsed her and put her in a glass container. Keeping my fingers crossed!
I'm so curious how is it doing now?!
You're hilarious! Thanks for the quick and thorough video!
I have a bunch of orchids that i rescued. Most of their roots were decayed so removed them, treated with hydrogen peroxide and now i have them on/off in water trying to grow new roots. So far so good.
Hydrogen peroxide for life!
Dude, you are way too cute! 😂 Well done & thanks for the tips!

The orchid I got my mum two years ago just put it a new flower sprout - she's so chuffed. We re potted it after the flowers died, the original nursery pot was buried in the root ball! Can't wait to see what the flowers look like, the original ones were dyed blue, yes it was a rescue 😂

I love you Krystal. You are amazing!!
You've probably answered this before-but where did you get that tray? Seems like something I need in my life right now.
I didn’t know that you could do that with these. Awesome. My mother in law gave me hers. It hasn’t bloomed since she first got it and that was 7 years ago. I received it. It has one leaf. It’s trying to bloom. I think. But I don’t want it to die. Tried repotting it but it was in terrible shape.
Your that odd dance is freaking wholesome...
Wow rhe colors changed! They look white-ish green in the first part of the video then such a beautiful new purple bloom😍
