I really love this song - the story behind it and its long journey to becoming a finished work is so unique and fascinating. The Beatles and John in particular were constantly experimenting with cutting edge technologies and effects, so I do think John would have been thrilled by the whole thing. The song itself is quite touching, bittersweet and slightly melancholic which fits perfectly as “the last Beatles song,” I think. They didn’t overdo it with the orchestral touches either. Obviously it’s never going to stack up against their catalog but it’s a nice, pleasant coda to a legendary run. And I like that they seemed to make it sound more like the music John was doing around the time he recorded the original demo, rather than trying for another Strawberry Fields Forever or something.
You should say Paul in particular as well. It was Paul who found out how to manipulate the tape machine by removing the eraser head to make tape loops. He then showed the rest how to do it and spearheaded the idea on Tomorrow Never Knows. Paul was constantly pushing them to experiment
Not a massive Beatles listener but I also really enjoyed this song. They were experimental and innovative with how they turned the demo into a finished song, which I definitely prefer over if they tried being more "safe" with their interpretation like what Fantano described wanting the song to be like in the video.
I really liked it, I think the large sound Paul and Ringo were going for was kind of a nice send off. I can only imagine that the reason they chose to bury the voice a little was because when put through the AI, the demo vocal track, recorded in an apartment sounds slightly awkward when put in front of studio recorded instruments. So the final product to me actually sounds quite impressive and as a Beatles fan I’m really satisfied with how it turned out.

In a vacuum, I don't disagree with Melon, but since it's a standalone single being billed as the last Beatles track, I don't think they could realistically go with the type of subtle, understated production that he's suggesting. If they had actually released this track on the Anthology, then that would make way more sense because it would be part of a three song collection. But on it's own, they had to add enough instrumentation and production that would at least somewhat live up to the hype.
@xBINARYGODx Lad the beatles recorded 13 albums in 7 years. It's more accurate to say this IS Beatles like cause in the Beatlemania days they had to flood albums onto the market as fast as possible, ending up a number of their albums filled with covers. PPS, WtB, BFS, all had covers filling those up. So it is like the Beatles to compromise artistry for business and non artistic reasons
And this is why artists shouldn't let external factors, such as public hype, effect the work itself, because it almost always yields a lesser result long-term.
I’m not sure if this is super common knowledge, but this song was included on a cassette tape of demos John made that was labeled “for Paul”. Yoko gave Paul the cassette (in 1994) and felt John wanted to work on them with Paul. Therefore, I feel Paul’s contributions are welcome, and it’s a nice gesture that two 80ish-year old guys would put in the time and effort to honour a fallen bandmate (two technically) who were not able to see through the completion of the track.
It’s common knowledge that it was meant for Paul Hogan; the Australian actor that went on to achieve fame in the 80s. John Lennon considered him his brother 🫂

It's weird I'm living in a time where I get to hear a new Beatles song, especially being younger. To me it feels like a good conclusion, even if production wasn't the best at least intentions behind it were good, and it's well enough made.
I get what you’re saying about Paul and Ringo’s contributions I think it really came down to the song being like ‘Real Love’ where it was clearly just a John Lennon song with not a lot of space for anything else so I understand them wanting to over-contribute to make it a Beatles song which they were always going to struggle to do They did really well with Free as Bird to make that a Beatles song
That's completely wrong There was just as much space as in Free As A Bird in the bridge that they just cut out completely instead of finishing it's lyrics. This whole thing is awful.
@@jonasrmb01 All criticism and discussion is welcome, but calling someone "completely wrong" and saying "this whole thing is awful" is, in itself, awful. He didn't not enjoy it because he's a music reviewer. He just didn't enjoy it. I don't know why people think that being a reviewer makes you like things less.
@@franciscofarias6385I guess it just makes him more likely to see the faults in a song, and to review the song in a vacuum, which removes some of the sentimentality that we usually have when thinking or listening to music.
It isn't a masterpiece. But it's a satisfying conclusion to a legacy of one of the most important artists in music or general. And the fact that the Beatles used a new technology in their music is just a repeat of what they have always done even in the past.
I understand the viewpoint but i still like it and disagree. This tape was made by john and is in the styling of a john song, not a beatles song. They then also had to get what little of george they had for one day of trying to make this in the 90s and then mix it all together. The fact that it even sounds as good as it does is an achievement in itself. Paul and ringo have also both had their own solo careers and their own sounds, so for them to manage to turn this into a beatles esque song while not sounding dated is just so impressive to me. I know paul proved he could make a lennon song with let me roll it but to turn lennons tape into something that feels like a bookend a sound that they havent really made for 60 odd years, its just cool It's also cool that the ended their career with industry changing technology, very on brand
I still can’t say how surreal it is to have new Beatles music in 2023 but I still absolutely love it, like it’s undoubtedly a beautiful song and it’s just incredible being able to hear John’s voice again… The Beatles with the very first band I got into back when I started playing guitar at age 10 (I’m 24 now) and they’re still a huge reason why I wanted to play music in the first place so just to hear John's genuine vocals is just still crazy to me but it’s an absolutely great song and I’ve been listening to it so many times so far. I love it
Idk I really liked the bass in it. I’d say drums were slightly too prominent, and George’s guitar part could’ve been a little more prominent. But I’m not gonna whine, I’m very grateful we got this. Can understand why you might think it’s too dense compared to the demo
The juxtaposition of the somber-ish vocal with the progressively more upbeat accompaniment encapsulates their range pretty well. Not the best Beatles track of course but pretty decent considering the context.
What I find so strange is that The Beatles technically had the best finale with Real Love (which some feel shouldnt count as a Beatles song as the demo had been released years earlier on bootlegs and compilations, but by that logic Now and Then doesn't count either). It's a much better song than Free As A Bird and Now and Then and hugely satifying finale to what many consider the greatest band of all time. Its amazing that for a band as overdiscussed as them, Real Love is barely mentioned.
Let it be is the best farewell song they overdid this we're retiring gimmick but that's what most great artists and athletes do they retire then unretire most times
i don't really like Real Love all that much, it's very much in there on john's cornier side that showed up a lot at the end of his career, really catchy but not my vibe. but i think you're right. they managed to give it a really Beatley sound in a way that sounded authentic, whereas Now and Then feels more contrived. The backing vocals, Ringo's booming tom fills, the little guitar licks, simple piano, a catchy pop melody with a surprising, slightly moody chorus, even a little harpsichord. it's also fitting that it feels like a song that could play over the credits of a beatles doc lol
@@artistaccount actually Abbey Road was their farewell, chronologically speaking. Can't get a better finale than that. You make a valid point though. They're kinda overdoing it lol
I love this song. I think the fact you can hear a 60s Lennon, 90s Harrison, and 2020s McCartney and Star really adds to the story of the track. And overall I just connect to it.
I was born in 2000, yet I have been a Beatles fan my entire life, they are my favorite band of all time, and never in a million years did I think that I would be able to actually experience the joy of being able to have a Beatles song released in my lifetime. What a privilege to finally be able to hear the completed song and the final song of the greatest band in history, and I can't wait for the music video's release tomorrow. Thank you, Paul, John, George, Ringo, Olivia, Yoko, and everyone who made this possible. I literally cannot thank you enough.
The bass and drums really aren't that obnoxious, lmao. They're pretty comfortable in the mix IMO.. because it's a song that's driving forward. I get why the original demo gives more slow and downbeat vibes that could have been stuck to here. But I think following that structure would have been a big mistake. They clearly wanted this version to be more uplifting, rather than walk away with a downer. Perhaps you can intellectualise it and say the downer would be a better song. And maybe it would be. But I also think that's massively missing the point in this case.
if it's a sad song, let it be (heh) a sad song. that would be more emotionally impactful for a final Beatles song than trying to jazz it up Phil Spektor stylee
The Love Me Do remaster is absolutely incredible with a good sound system. You should go over that/the new remasters when they come out. It makes me thrilled to hear all these songs in a new light.
i think this could've been one of their great hits back then. its just that good. cant stop listening. really delivers the surreal, haunting feelings of a past john lennon.
Ringo and Paul are both in their '80s at the time of this coming out. A pretty solid entry for rocking that old! Makes you think about what your grandparents do?! The mix is a bit off tho
Everybody complains: "It's too safe. it needed more experimentation, more instruments", and "this was over-produced, it needed to be more minimalistic and melancholic like the demo". *BE HAPPY WE GOT A NEW BEATLES SONG!* That paul and Ringo got out of retirement, had fun in the studio and made this gift for us fans and for Lennon and Harrison. Something with so much hype as "the final beatles song based on one the most beloved Lennon demos" will never please everyone. I agree, it needs remixing and the strings and guitars do fight in the mix, but it's still great and has the feels of a classic beatles song which is an achievement. I can imagine this song being an Abby Road B-side. Paul and Ringo set out to make a tribute song for their lost friends and play the final note of their legacy, and they got the job done.
I liked the song. It’s quite powerful in the lyrics and Lennon’s voice. The unfairness of his death rings through. It has this parting feeling transcending a relationship extending to one’s mortality. The extra voices and instrumentation I could do without but they don’t ruin it.
I think what mr fantano doesnt understand is that they didnt intend to create a good John lennon solo song, but wanted to create a beatles song and were obviously limited to what they could do. They could have made this an imagine era piece but that would mean taking out all the beatles elements of the song (like pauls licks, over stylish bassline typical in post revolver work, and their signature strings with a counter melody). I think this was a lovely send off to the Beatles and a reminder of what we used to have
@@ΦώτηςΒασιλείου-ι9ω you say this but the track was labeled "for paul" and they indeed TRIED to finish it in the 90s and put it down. oaul and ringo are getting older, more sentimental. thinking EVERYTHING is a money grab is dilusional
I feel like the density of the song was a bit of a necessity. I don’t think an intimate song would live up to the 30 year buildup. They had to pump it up a bit and make it exciting.
Also from what I've heard of the vocals without any of the instruments, a single word does end up sounded artificial and needs instruments to try and hide it.
I'm not even a huge Beatles fan but I liked it. Felt wistful and melancholic but also thankful for all the wonderful people in your life. A fitting swan song.
I think you nailed it, technically speaking, from around 5.10 onwards. I concur 100%. . . BUT . . . I still found the song incredibly moving…How could you not?
I've been a fan of the Beatles for all my life and anticipated this song and I'm not really moved by it. I won't even call it a cool track as Fontano. Cause I don't really like Paul's solo work. And this sounds more like a Paul's solo song than a John's song.
Something that might be important about Paul's guitar work is he supposedly meant it as a tribute to the instrumental George recorded for what would've been the Anthology 3 version of Now and Then. How accurate that is we'll never know, but Paul said that in the short film they released for the song. I can understand if Paul and Ringo wanted a big stamp from George to be there on the song, that they'd go ahead with what he envisioned the guitar to be in 1996.
i think its spot on for late 60s beatles sound, just sounds much cleaner in general, also has the essence of free as a bird and real love, that without peter jackson make johns voice a lot more raw
@@sainthuckelberry bass licks are straight out of revolver, orchestration sounds like anything george martin made for them, harmonies… i really don’t think i need to explain myself, or you need a new set of ears lol

I totally disagree with your take. The guitar licks sound great to me, and the drums and bass sound appropriate to me, they’re pretty low in the mix compared to the singing and rhythm guitar. I think you’re being over critical, as I often feel.
not a lot of beatles songs are commercialized because they're expensive af, either someone near you always blasts their music or your parents or grandparents always plays them, because I have not heard a single beatles song being played in malls or other places
Come on fantano this song is quite good, you're right about the verse change, They also deleted off the best part of the demo being John's falsetto, quite sad but its still a great track I still consider Free as a Bird to be better but maybe this track might grow on me
Imagine a world where Sting died in the early nineties and Trudie digs up personal demos of Sting music destine for The Soul Cages or Ten Summoner’s Tales and hands them over to Andy & Stewart to get produced and marketed as “The final Police song”.
That's the thing. The first thought I had was: Too much. No space. And it just just sounds like Grandpa Paul style. But hey as a piece of "All Beatles back together" art I appreciate it.
Honestly my only gripe with the song is that Paul just isn’t able to harmonise with John any more. I think the song would sound a million times better if we had 80s Paul’s voice singing along John.
My only real complaint with it is that Paul didn’t really attempt to fill it out lyrically like he & George did with “Free as a Bird.” Part of what made Beatles songs great was the interplay between Lennon&McCartney’s very different approaches to lyricism in the same songs. I can’t help but feel he could’ve added something to distract from/ even replace the godawful rhyme of “because of you” with “because of you” which was probably only meant to be a fill-in line to fit the syllables for something else later, and as it stands it’s the most obvious giveaway that the Lennon vocals weren’t finished.
I think what Anthony fails to appreciate is the fact that us zoomers didn't grow up with Anthology, and it was our parents who had the privilege to be able to go out and buy the then-newest Beatles singles "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love". For the first 20 years of my life, I legitimately thought they'd never finish "Now And Then" and that there would never be a new Beatles single for our generation. It was a bit of a nihilistic thought, considering I'm a huge Beatles fan, but it was realistic for the 20 years that it lasted. When Paul announced this in June, I jumped in the air with joy. Finally, a Beatles single that's brand new for my generation! That's the aspect of the song that historically makes a lot of sense, and I'm so sad that nobody has ever touched on this aspect before. Also, when the news that this track utilized AI stem separation technology initially came out in June, Anthony made this dumb little video on his RUclips Shorts channel where he proclaimed it to be 'the worst idea ever'. I wish he could admit he was wrong about that instead of sidestepping that viewpoint in this video. Sure, it was a RUclips Shorts video from 4 months ago, it's disposable, nobody's seen it since. But I went back to it. It wasn't funny. I highly doubt Anthony will ever read this, because he has better things to do than sit around and even touch my comment. I just wanted to say this anyways, because it's worth knowing all the things that he neglected to mention in this video regarding his views on the track. (By the way, the track is gorgeous in my view.)
Yeah, he won't admit that because he is always right yah. Sometimes he makes this weird reviews for clicks. Seen it with some other bands. Wish we have reviewers who are open minded and unbiased.

I think your criticisms are valid, but I think you're thinking of this as a John Lennon song because that's what you want it to be. Sure it might've been more touching if it was just John and a piano, like Imagine, but then it wouldn't have been a Beatles song and it would've stayed a demo.
Commenting before I watch cause I feel like Fantano gonna be a bitch and call it trash. I fucking love this song. The way the title and the lyrics make for a perfect bookend to the Beatles catalog and perfectly capture the circumstances surrounding the song is amazing. It’s very fitting and poetic. It’s cool how life does that sometimes. I’ve listened to it like 100 times already and it gets better everytime. It captures now and it captures then. The two meet in love. Jolly good tune.
i think that if theyd worked on it more in the 90s George would have put on a lot more lead slide guitar, I learned the song today and worked out a lil slide solo ala George for it hehe
Absolutely spot on with this review. It was the type of melody that needed a delicate arrangement/production, which a final Beatles song was never going to get.
This isn’t the type of song you can criticize on its technical merit. The emotional weight behind makes it beautiful (it’s also a good song). This is Paul and Ringo’s goodbye to John and George. Yes it’s mixed a little weird and overproduced but when the instrumental section came in, I got a warm feeling in my chest. I knew melon wouldn’t like it, he has no emotion.
That's a bit unfair, I've been a huge Beatles fan for years and have been invested emotionally for just as long. I really appreciate this as a goodbye to John (tho I think that was already achieved with Real Love/Free as a Bird, which I loved), but I was pretty disappointed in the actual song. Gotta agree with Melon on this one.
If you have a background in production or engineering you unfortunately can’t not evaluate it on those terms. It’s sad when a prolific mixing engineer brick walls the hell out of a nice song.
Its a great song Anthony, if you don't get too hung up on the demo, it cannot be a Beatles song if other members don't play on it, so it being dense and also modern, was pretty much expected. And since it is the last ever song, strings added a nice extra layer of ornamentation. IMO, its masterfully done.
@@riezexeero7392 If it’s silly to expect a good song, then it shouldn’t have been released. The Beatles shouldn’t be releasing dreadful rehashes of weak demos.
Poetic that Paul spent years raging about how Phil Spector (recommended by Lennon) destroyed his simple piano song The Long and Winding road by adding strings and too much overblown stuff, only for him to do now the same to Lennon's song.
I'm 100% certain they had to cut that part because the software being used couldn't adequately seperate that section of the vocals from the piano. What is included in this release is all they would have been able to salvage.
Best Beatles song ever…nope. A sweet little song with all of the Fab Four that is pleasant and catchy…yup! I am glad it exist. It didn’t have to be released…but it was…and I am here for it.
I love this song. It's simple but so nostalgic and fits perfectly with the Beatles catalog yet still sounding distinctly like a John song. I know Paul particularly was thinking about finishing this demo for a long-long time since it was one of the few unfinished songs Yoko gave to him after John's death
I’d like them to take John’s vocal on Free as a Bird and clean it up the same way as this with the new tech. It’s a better song but John sounds like a robot under water on it.
While I agree the re-recorded bits sound way to full and modern I don’t think it takes away from the song as much They’re not going to make this song a Imagine Bside… Imagine was not a Beatles record… and McCartney always did those bass fills in Beatles songs so I think it definitely makes it Beatlesque
Oh of course Fantano doesn’t like it, always has to be the contrarian. You can’t listen to this in a vacuum , they told us what this was going to be and as an encapsulation of everything Beatles, it works very well - all the trappings are in there. Production like Imagine is the last thing anyone wanted. If you want the song presented as a John Lennon solo track, go listen to the demo. It’s not going anywhere.
Personally I loved it. I agree that they didn't go for anything quite like "Imagine" but based on what I saw from Paul it felt like they were trying to channel that late 60s Beatles sound. I certainly got that with the bass and strings. Honestly had Harrison still been alive and were he putting down the guitar solo as opposed to it just sounding "like" a Harrison solo, maybe that would have helped the overall sound.

Well said, couldn't agree more!
Thumbs up for a comment about the music and not a meme
Love them
I really liked it, I think the large sound Paul and Ringo were going for was kind of a nice send off.

Agreed. I dig it.
Yes, in the context of it being the final Beatles song, something epic and grand sounding like what they did is much more fitting.
so, you're saying for entirely non-artistic reasons, the artistry had to be compromised. Not very Beatles, actually.

John Lennon considered him his brother 🫂
there is no evidence that the cassette was labeled “For Paul”. it’s a popular Beatles myth

It's weird I'm living in a time where I get to hear a new Beatles song, especially being younger. To me it feels like a good conclusion, even if production wasn't the best at least intentions behind it were good, and it's well enough made.

I think it really came down to the song being like ‘Real Love’ where it was clearly just a John Lennon song with not a lot of space for anything else so I understand them wanting to over-contribute to make it a Beatles song which they were always going to struggle to do
They did really well with Free as Bird to make that a Beatles song

I agree Real Love is one of the most undiscussed songs of theirs that doesn’t deserve to be at all
I used to prefer Real Love, then found new appreciation in Free As A Bird, and now think maybe Now and Then is my favourite, but too early to tell.

But I think following that structure would have been a big mistake. They clearly wanted this version to be more uplifting, rather than walk away with a downer.
Perhaps you can intellectualise it and say the downer would be a better song. And maybe it would be. But I also think that's massively missing the point in this case.

Also from what I've heard of the vocals without any of the instruments, a single word does end up sounded artificial and needs instruments to try and hide it.

Yeah, it really pulled at the heart strings for me personally
It's a scrap song. If this was on one of his solo albums in the 70s, nobody would care about it
It sounds more like a Double Fantasy outtake than a Beatles song.

I highly doubt Anthony will ever read this, because he has better things to do than sit around and even touch my comment. man. this song is still a beatles song, that means its still 10/10 in comparison to music in general.
i liked it
This isn’t the type of song you can criticize on its technical merit.
@@ginggrimson424give it another lesson
@@ramoniboy Tbh I did and it grew on me lol
@@ginggrimson424 same thing happened for me, it kind of just clicked. it’s not a masterpiece but it’s far better than what i had expected
But many Beatles songs don’t have all 4 members playing on them?
@@daviebananas1735many abbey road songs and white album songs are missing members
It would still be nice to have a finished version with just John. Get it done Yoko!
@@daviebananas1735it's completely different because this is their last song
Its not a beatles song though, its a demo from the late 70s. They took a late John solo demo and made it something that just isnt it.
My only thought listening to the first minute was. "MAN the piano on this is loud"
Absolutely incredible send off for the greatest band ever
I'm waiting for the john lennon hologram
Honestly I wouldnt be surprised if this actually happened within the near future

@@daviebananas1735 yeah sure bud, whatever you say 👌
We making it out of Liverpool with this one, mates
I think what people forget is that these 3 songs were Lennon home demos of songs that were unfinished musically and lyrically.
Yeah and these "critics" expect more... from an unfinished demo. Wtf 😂
@@riezexeero7392 If it’s silly to expect a good song, then it shouldn’t have been released. The Beatles shouldn’t be releasing dreadful rehashes of weak demos.
I like the song’s mix in the context of the music video, like that was clearly what it was mixed for.
Personally I think it's kind of average by Beatles standards, but it's more powerful for being the last piece of music we'll ever get from them
Poetic that Paul spent years raging about how Phil Spector (recommended by Lennon) destroyed his simple piano song The Long and Winding road by adding strings and too much overblown stuff, only for him to do now the same to Lennon's song.
What's bad about this version is that they delete a huge part of the song which has John's falsetto. Really takes away a lot.
Probably because the quality on that part of the recording was bad
It’s an overrated and unfinished section - I see nothing wrong in them not including it
@@badgasaurus4211your comment is bullshit smh ✌️
I'm 100% certain they had to cut that part because the software being used couldn't adequately seperate that section of the vocals from the piano. What is included in this release is all they would have been able to salvage.
I assume that you mean the "I don't wanna lose you" part. I think it's because of the quality and the lyrics in that part is not complete.
Nice Tapeworm T-shirt take on the Beatles final song.
Of course, he wasn't gonna like it... what a surprise...
It is shit to be fair. And I say that as a huge Beatles fan.
“It’s a heartwarming story, but it’s just not believable. That’s why I give E.T. One-and-a-half stars.”
We're never getting carnival of light are we?
No. The End.
I agree with Fantano’s critique of the mix. It is too dense for eerie, airy kind of song it should be.
I wish I could write just one song that could be so touching. In my book, The Beatles were it.
The song’s beautiful bro.
The final Beatles song should have always been "The End"
You simply can't get a better closer than that.
Tbf some of his demo vocals are really quiet and some lines he did not enunciate. They had to bury them at times for that reason
Most predictable review of this track.
Youre so right
I’d like them to take John’s vocal on Free as a Bird and clean it up the same way as this with the new tech. It’s a better song but John sounds like a robot under water on it.
While I agree the re-recorded bits sound way to full and modern I don’t think it takes away from the song as much
They’re not going to make this song a Imagine Bside… Imagine was not a Beatles record… and McCartney always did those bass fills in Beatles songs so I think it definitely makes it Beatlesque
