I live in Germany, so obviously I could be bias but I've always said VW cars are very vanilla as far as looks go but you forget about it once you sit inside and drive. Interiors on the newer ones are really good.
Yes I completely agree with you, they are very plan Jane on the outside, but killer on the inside. Even my Golf R looks pretty much like any other Golf out there. BUT once you sit inside you remember exactly why you love VWs and then when you drive it, you fall in love all over again... SO yeah you could say I am a bit of a VW fanboy... LOL But overall VWs have some of the best build materials and quality of any cars in their class.
mujjuman AH you know how it is. If you have a preference in a car manufacture, you automatically get labeled a "Fanboy". Yeah I mean don't get me wrong I owned and have owned everything from 70s American Muscle cars to 2015 Hyundai. I just have a soft spot in my heart for the VWs :P After all it is the peoples car.
I had a MKV GTI with 120k and never had any problems mechanically. it was very reliable I'm not sure why people complain that maintenance is high on these cars. the way I look at it is if you take good care of your car it will take good care of you. I'm now driving a 2013 Tiguan 4motion and I love it !
I purchased my wife a 2014 Volkswagen GLI Edition 30 with Navigation for her birthday, after we paid off all of our debt. She just had to have the LED DRL and Bi-Xenon headlights with AFS, which I really appreciate too. We absolutely love that car. It's a baby Audi as she says, and fondly refers to her as Gloria because GLI are within the name. As a long time greaser, I know we're not alone in naming our car. Have you given your GT a name yet? Keep up the good work as always my friend.
That's great to hear that you both enjoy it! I haven't given the GT a name, I've never named my cars before. I do have a nickname in mind for a future car if Ford makes a Bullitt Mustang next year though...
bikephil Hilarious. Who said we went back into debt? The car was completely paid for upon purchase. It appears as though you still have much to learn my friend. Take care and don't be so quick to judge, lest ye be judged yourself.
@@tellurium96 Fantastic! Thank you for asking. We currently have ~120k+ miles on her (she's a 2014 model year btw) and she feels even better than she did when she was brand new. First thing we did after purchasing her was take her on the switchbacks near Jerome, Arizona. Being a greaser, I wanted to work in the suspension ASAP to avoid any future creaks, rattles or groans that tend to plague all VW's. I made my wife pucker the entire time I was chasing a local down the mountain. He was in a Jeep Wrangler TJ so he had both the steering advantage and first-hand knowledge of the switchbacks. Eventually he was able to shake us after ten minutes or so. But then again, I also backed off after a Mule deer ran across the road (in between myself and the Jeep). I looked over at my wife and she was pale white and about four inches taller in the seat because she was clenched so tight! I asked her if she wanted me to stop and slow down, to which she could barely squeak out a reply "Yes" while shaking her head and quivering. Shes a great car and since we're the original owners, we will _never_ get rid of her! We highly recommend the VW GLI for those who want something akin to a 'baby Audi', but without the high cost of the Audi maintenance program. Stay classy my friend.
My wife and I were in the market for a compact sedan. We test drove all the norms, Corolla S, Civic EX, Mazda 3, Sentra, Focus, even the new Cruze. After discussion, we found ourselves back at the VW dealership. We liked the Jetta in its SEL 1.8T form. The Jetta just felt more refined to us. The interior lines, fit/finish and feel were solid. We prefer clean lines, clean interiors when it comes to styling. As was said the Jetta is a handsome car, not flashy. Fine with us.. Test drive one its worth your time.
Just got one of these two weeks ago for my son to drive and we just love it. Wife and I drive a 2012 Benz and this car has a lot more bells and whistles. So we all want to drive it now. Your review is spot on to our experiences as well. Love that the touch screen responds when we are about to touch it. Easy to drive, responsive, tons of safety features and one of my favorite features is the adaptive cruise control. Will break probably to a stop if I let it in that mode pulling up to a red light.
Great review! I traded my '08 Mini S in for a '16 Jetta 1.4T. I'm right around 6,000 miles now and love it! Thought I'd miss the Mini but the Jetta is surprisingly fun. Hopefully the reliability will be better than the Mini because that car was just a fun nightmare.
I know you don't have the car anymore, but on the right side of the steering wheel, pressing the silver button to the right should switch it to trip 2 so that you can see the fuel economy for the whole trip.
I tried a 2017 Passat for 2 days and that engine is really interesting. I'll be definetely considering a Golf with that engine and a manual for my next car.
Hey Matt just a quick VW quirk with the trip computer and fuel economy, the "OK" button doubles as a reset button if you hold it, but if you do a quick press and release of it, it will show you long term fuel economy. It resets every 100 driving hours. It is labelled "2" on the top right of the trip computer. So you can see in the video of you scrolling through the trip functions, it has a "1" on the top right which means you're on the trip mode where all data resets when the car sits for 2 hours or more. But if you hit the OK button once, it'll go to "2" where it will have long term trip data numbers where it will never reset until it hits 100 hours of pure driving time.
VW makes a reliable car now. The only unreliable ones were certain mk3s and mk4s. Because they went a decade building some cars with questionable reliability they carry a stigma. But it was only certain models. The original 1.8t's could be good or terrible, and the mk3 had some electrical problems because that was about the time when VW started putting lots of power options in them and it took a while to work the quirks out. Mechanically, as long as you maintain them, they are quite reliable.
+Heartagram I sold my Passat 1.8t at 184k, ran like am absolute top. Like I said, they could be good or bad. I am looking for another one, a wagon. Shouldn't have sold mine. The biggest problem with the B5 Passat was the control arms, they were very expensive to replace. Fortunately I didn't have to do mine.
iDrive4fun93 I have an 04 FWD Passat. Got it at 120k miles for 2.5k..little did I know I bought a rock lol. I should have 200k miles by April/June of next year. Personally, I want to keep this thing until it is 100% totaled. It rides well, it has always been there for me, gas mileage is alright, body is beat, but this provides me with so much peace of mind. I think it is the most beautiful thing in the world to get in a car that you know will work fine and also not have to worry about it being hit or damaged because it's already fucked up. I honestly can't see myself wanting anything more lol. As for issues, I've never had anything with the control arms..I encountered engine sludge...A whole lot of it, but I blame the neglectful previous owners for that. Window regulator on 1 window failed, CV boot needed replacement, AC compressor died, and that's it lol. 3-4k oil changes with High mileage Castrol synthetic since bought.
+Heartagram most of that is just wear and tear. The Passat is crazy reliable, mine was an 02, so the first year of the updated body style, 1.8t, wagon, Tiptronic gearbox. No sludge with mine, had a rough downshift between 3rd and 2nd, but it never got worse in the 30k miles it was doing it, and being a sealed transmission it wasn't worth fixing, only paid 1800 for it. Looking for another b5 or b5.5. Or a Saturn SW2, I kinda like them for some reason. They are fun to drive, don't rust because they are plastic, and they are pretty reliable surprisingly. And easy to work on, and ugly and undesirable so nobody will steal it hahahaha.
I really missed the old intro, reminds me of the older days 😁 love you channel Matt! keep up the amazing work. I love your weekly updates because it keeps me up with the car news. and your reviews are like no other
I have the basic and cheapest Volkswagen, a 2016 Jetta S with the 5 speed manual. I have 14,000 miles on it and the total average fuel economy since it was brand new is 35 mpg with the 1.4 turbo. I drive it hard so it's surprising it gets that good fuel economy. I had a 2013 Corolla S and a 2015 Mazda3 iSport (both base models). The Mazda had great fit and finish, handled and shifted awesome with the 6 speed manual. The 2.0 engine felt weak though. The Jetta has some cheap hard plastics but the places I touch like the steering wheel, handles and shifter feel nice. I don't rub up on the dashboard so it's rather unimportant to me. I like my Jetta and look forward to the redesign which will ride on the MQB platform. These cars are rather affordable due to VW being aggressive to sell their cars due to the diesel scandal.
Ive seen many people on Fuelly getting well over 40mpg average with the 1.4 T 5 speed....why are you only getting 35mpg? Are your tires properly inflated?
. Part of my daily commute is driving in stop and go congestion 25 miles in third gear five days a week. I live in Florida so the AC is constantly running even in the winter. I leave the car running with AC on with my dog in it when I leave it parked to go shopping. That kills the fuel economy. And yes, the tires are properly inflated.
William Rutkowski Im considering trading my Mini Cooper for a base Jetta 1.4T 5 speed manual....but I want to be able to get over 40mpg. Your post scared me when you said you only get 35mpg avg. Does the car handle well?
Alberto 9324 handling is obviously going to be different because of the size. Plus they have different competitors (M5 vs M3, ect) so it would be cool to hear what he has to say about how each compares to it's competitor
I've received a multitude of Jetta's as loaners from VW dealers. I've never been unhappy with it. It's a fine car for its price range with plenty of pick up...even the old 2.5 5 cylinder wasn't bad. Now if the dealers would give me a comparable car to my CC as a loaner (aka another CC or a Taureg) that would be superb lol
Love the fact it doesn't say "Jetta" on it. Makes it seem as if the Gli is its own car regardless if it looks exactly like one when you see it on the road.
A word of warning on the seats of VWs: We've had a '12 Jetta TDI premium, '13 Beetle Turbo Conv, '14 Beetle TDI Conv and '12 Passat S. The seats are fine unless you plan to drive more than a couple/few hours where you get a sore bottom. Because of the TDI scandal, we've moved on to Hyundais and recently took our '16 Veloster Turbo on a 2,400 mile road trip, or 41 hours over 6 days where we experienced no pain or soreness. Check out Hyundai's everyone, they're excellent. All these cars were/are manuals, kudo's to Hyundai for offering a loaded model w/a stick.
why the jetta 2016 1.4 the transmition jerk during downshifting in city driving ? is this normal? using the triptronic minimizes the issue but is annoying during city driving
I might add the Fender stereo is very good at all levels. Adjustable base, etc. I am going to keep mine, as i prefer the 1.8 over the 1.4. More power, less noise.
I can't stand 1.8T engines...smh. Who in gods name needs to be THAT economical with gas. Might as well buy a horse and a ton of carrots. Anyways, great review man!! It's great hearing your thoughts on a vehicle.
Matt your reviews have grown on me! I was not a fan a year or so ago but you have won me over. I subscribed today! Would you say the Jetta or the Scion iM handles better?
Hey man, love your vids. Best car reviews online. I was wondering if you plan on getting your hands on a 2017 raptor when they become available? Would be great to get your input.
The screen looks as though it's the same as in my Audi. There are 2 different displays for fuel economy, one is fuel economy 1) and fuel economy 2) Fuel economy 1 will show 'trip' economy, 2 will show 'since last forced reset.' To reset press (possibly hold) the 0.0. I personally prefer to keep it non-reset so it gives a lifetime view of fuel economy. Note this is based on the model shown, your autobahn edition might vary slightly. To get to the 'fuel economy 2' screen can be either using the up/down arrows on your steering wheel or pressing trip/reset on your wheel. Additional info can be found on page 28 of your manual.
LOL no, saw they were the same screen, looked up his manual, ctrl+f mileage... Manual confirmed what I thought. His feedback... um, kind of agreed(?). Total time invested: ~3 minutes.
Hey that is Matt and the style of his reviews. I personally love the way he is consistent on they way he reviews things. I personally drive everything I own like a stole it, not saying I drive over the speed limit, I just like to get to that said speed limit with some authority and aggression. Of course I don't drive that way with other people.... well besides my wife, since she is as aggressive as I am when it comes to driving. Now besides acceleration, there is also handling. One of my vehicles is a Scion FRS, and in factory form it does not accelerate as fast as my VW Golf R, but is feels much more planted and precise and is a heck more fun to drive on twisty roads. My point is Matt's style of reviewing is not for designed to abstract the essence of a vehicles design. It is to maintain a consistent and easy to compare result.
Hopefully eventually. I was supposed to be getting one as a press car this week but they had to reschedule it so hopefully I'll still be able to review it later this fall.
Yeah, we have a Golf, and it's obviously quite similar. Everything you said from the handling, to the transmission, to the milage and ride is dead on. Its head and shoulders above the competitors in my opinion.
When I was shopping for a car, I gave the Jetta SE a look. I really liked the tan and black interior I had considered the TDi but man, am I glad I didn't buy it!
Ethan Shrago Because of some work issues (I was laid off and rehired by a different company) I ended up buying a used Kia Optima. And I actually like it.
Jetta aren't sold in great numbers for Europe; nobody is dumb enough outside of America to buy a hatchback Golf over this less practical 4 door car that weighs more & cheapened for Americans. Heck while European Golfs are built in Wolfsburg Germany, all Jettas are built in Puebla, Mexico.
Amazing, simple German look. People who say the car looks "boring" have no class.
I live in Germany, so obviously I could be bias but I've always said VW cars are very vanilla as far as looks go but you forget about it once you sit inside and drive. Interiors on the newer ones are really good.

+MasterMech77 I don't consider myself a fanboy but I like most modern VWs in and out lol
mujjuman
OH I was just poking some fun at myself, with my youtube thumbnail and all.
+MasterMech77 hahahahaha im just saying u don't need to be a fanboy to appreciate these cars :p
mujjuman
AH you know how it is.
I'm not a car enthusiast by any means, thank god. Got one of these recently and I love it. Not overdesigned trash like most Asian cars these days.
How is it holding up today?
I had a MKV GTI with 120k and never had any problems mechanically. it was very reliable I'm not sure why people complain that maintenance is high on these cars. the way I look at it is if you take good care of your car it will take good care of you. The old intro! Yessssss I missed it so much!
oh yes the intro is back!
reminds me of a dancing leprechaun
Much better

I've been asking you to bring that intro back for a while now. About time dude. Thanks
Are you going to be going with the old intro from now on?
Just for these weekend reviews that don't have an opening sequence.
I like these more. Than that new one. Maybe this a little bit long with all those cars.
I like the old one best
I like the old intro
The new one is great

Ah okay, so that's how it works, thanks. I'll have to remember that for the next VW review.
And to think, people buy Civics an Corollas instead of this. Only reason I see why is resale and reliability.

Resale... Yes.. Reliability... My 1.8T is at 187k miles and reliable af..

"Thin B pillar". Largest in diameter in its class
This intro is the best one you have done. The other intros are not as good as these with that lit song.
I love this old intro!!!
The Jetta has some cheap hard plastics but the places I touch like the steering wheel, handles and shifter feel nice. I don't rub up on the dashboard so it's rather unimportant to me. Yeah they're great cars. My sister has a base 2015 Jetta S with the automatic and really likes it too.
It's a poor man's Audi. 😁😂
My Audi had the trip that cleared every drive and loved it! The 2nd trip does not clear.
You should try to review an ATS-V. My dad got a 2016, fantastic car
he's reviewd a cts,
Alberto 9324 So what, 2 completely different cars
Speedaholics mostly size n power
Alberto 9324 handling is obviously going to be different because of the size. Plus they have different competitors (M5 vs M3, ect) so it would be cool to hear what he has to say about how each compares to it's competitor
Speedaholics yee
love the old intro so much
the 1.8t engine sounds a lot better than the 1.4t
I cant believe you called that front end "aggressive". Hilarious. No other adjectives available for that?
Our Jetta 2011 has no problems. 1 owner 121,900 and going strong 💪
Hello Do you have plans to reviee the 2017 jetta sel?
Love the fact it doesn't say "Jetta" on it. Makes it seem as if the Gli is its own car regardless if it looks exactly like one when you see it on the road.
have only seen few cars like this jetta getting so much good reviews its unreal. and by the way, i love it too!
GLI jetta is full color as well as the SEL premium Passat
My favorite car reviewer! Awesome job!
Great video Matt! Love the intro!
pls review if u can bmw m3 e46
I'm hoping to review one in the spring.
I might add the Fender stereo is very good at all levels. Adjustable base, etc. I am going to keep mine, as i prefer the 1.8 over the 1.4. More power, less noise.
Will this be good fir a new driver
I can't stand 1.8T engines...smh. Who in gods name needs to be THAT economical with gas. Might as well buy a horse and a ton of carrots. Anyways, great review man!! It's great hearing your thoughts on a vehicle.
In my opinion this old intro is much better than the new one.
Matt your reviews have grown on me! I was not a fan a year or so ago but you have won me over. I subscribed today! Would you say the Jetta or the Scion iM handles better?
+buildmorefarms100 thank you for subscribing! The iM definitely handled better.
Digging the intro, man
Hey man, love your vids. Best car reviews online. I was wondering if you plan on getting your hands on a 2017 raptor when they become available? Would be great to get your input.
Yes the classic intro! Nostalgic as hell
do you have any diesel cars??
I used this car 2012 it was amazing car and I think I'm gonna buy new one 😍
I just got a 2013 gli autobahn and I love it. I have the same issue with the fuel economy resetting every time I get in
The screen looks as though it's the same as in my Audi.
There are 2 different displays for fuel economy, one is fuel economy 1) and fuel economy 2)
Fuel economy 1 will show 'trip' economy, 2 will show 'since last forced reset.'
To reset press (possibly hold) the 0.0.
Additional info can be found on page 28 of your manual.
you go to the mpg and hit ok on it and it displays the 2nd one.
Boom, good I hope that solves an otherwise-annoying problem.
+Tim Pryor damn. This dude knows his car so well: to the point where he memorizes the info on the drivers manual.
LOL no, saw they were the same screen, looked up his manual, ctrl+f mileage...
Manual confirmed what I thought.
His feedback... um, kind of agreed(?).
Total time invested: ~3 minutes.
Awesome review Matt!
Automatic or DSG ?
You should review the 2016 maxima
so glad he used the old intro! please stick to this one! we all love this one and prefer it over the newer gauge cliche one.
Nice review. Keep up the good work man.
It's just a Bugatti who hasn't taken velocity 9 yet
Do you have a review for VW Jetta 2016 1.8 T Sport too?
I have a 2014 Jetta se trim no options just 1.8 auto. It’s nice it’s a bit small I’m 5”11. I wish it had a few more options
why are we reviewing every car as if its a sports car? the person being this car would want something, comfortable, stylish, and affordable.
Great video. Thanks, one questions though is this car a gas or diesel?
When you going to do a review on a mk7 golf r?
Hey do u want to review a 2000 Honda Odyssey
Any way you can review a g37 coupe
what's the name of the intro?
I prefer this intro!
I hear the 1.4T engine is the best of the bunch: peppy, gets over 40 mpg.
How's the soundsystem?
8 speakers with base. no mudding at any volume. Completely adjustable. Controls on steering wheel also. I am happy with mine.
will you please review an sn-95 model mustang at some point? I recently just bought one and I want to see your opinion of an sn-95.
Like the way you explain things, good review
How quick does this feel compared to the Ford Fusion Titanium you drove?
It's been a while since I drove the fusion but from my memory I'd say they felt about the same.
did the civic new digital dash make all cars look cheap? except the cars which have it(bmw 7,mercedes e and s,audi, lamborghini).
Yes it did.
Can you do a review of a 2008 audi a4 ?
How does it have leather seats??
Jake Lamotta se, and sel trims have leather seats.
Billy Owusu. Only in America??
Jake Lamotta no, other countries have that option too.
They're not real leather seats, they're leatherette seats.
hey Matt, i really liked you reviews! i have one question, are you gona review the new Infiniti q50 400 redsport?
Hopefully eventually. I was supposed to be getting one as a press car this week but they had to reschedule it so hopefully I'll still be able to review it later this fall.
I have the 1.8 tsi sport. You could test drive it if you want
Please do a review on a Camry or Accord or Mazda 6
Do VWs’ take regular unleaded fuel?
JaJaHead premium but I run mine on regular fule and it runs fine
Nice review dude!
Do the golf r if you haven't already
I once rented a passat, I agree with you in regards to how roomy the are.
Yeah, we have a Golf, and it's obviously quite similar. Everything you said from the handling, to the transmission, to the milage and ride is dead on. Its head and shoulders above the competitors in my opinion.
Even though I'm not a huge fan of VW (in recent years) this is a nice car...
God review of the Jetta. See if you can get the gli!
you should review a mk6 golf R manual!!
Please review 2016/17 VW GTI!
You should try and review a charger or challenger scatpack
it would be great if you review a focus RS mk2. (2010)
Are you going to review a 2016 Honda Accord Sport?
I'd like to. I have someone that's offered one I just need to make the trip to film it.
does your neck not hurt?
You should do the GTI.
ahhh, missed that intro !
Yes the old intro is back 😂👍
do you think could review the rx-8 :D
I have an RX-8 review video coming at the end of this month :)
When I was shopping for a car, I gave the Jetta SE a look. I really liked the tan and black interior I had considered the TDi but man, am I glad I didn't buy it!
What did you buy?
old 2004 gold prius
Ethan Shrago Because of some work issues (I was laid off and rehired by a different company) I ended up buying a used Kia Optima. And I actually like it.
Alberto 9324 You will never, ever see me in a Prius. I'd rather ride a bike.
Volkswagen in gold? Meh, where's the rose gold at?
review a tesla like the p90d please!!
the corolla of Europe
Jetta aren't sold in great numbers for Europe; nobody is dumb enough outside of America to buy a hatchback Golf over this less practical 4 door car that weighs more & cheapened for Americans. Heck while European Golfs are built in Wolfsburg Germany, all Jettas are built in Puebla, Mexico.
+subaruwrxfan Hey, will you ever review the C5 Corvette Z06?
+Devonte Murray probably eventually if someone offers one.
+subaruwrxfan I ask because next year I'm going to either invest in the C5 Z06 or an AP2 S2K
my 2011 TDI Jetta has everything that this one has.
That poor bag in the back seat at 6:52 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Please Review a Honda Crx
