Bravo! I’ve watched this video a dozen times. The first time, I used it to show my wife what was involved with a retiling we needed in the kitchen. Your delivery and instructions were superb. Walked me through step by step, and the floor looks fantastic.
I have to replace tiles after a drain pipe was repaired under my kitchen floor. I found this video first and do not need to search any further. You are very detailed and showed all safety issues. Thank you very much. Thanks to you, I can do this. I subscribed for sure.
I have watched 5 videos of tile replacement but none of then couldn’t get me all the info I was looking for. Thank you very much. This was really helpful
Thank you so much for posting!!! I wasn't looking for a PHD education in kitchen tile, just need to do a repair. You were spot on, with the quick, clean information i needed to get the job done. I am saving your channel for future tutorials, as my house is nearing 20 years old. I figure i'll need to know a little bit about a lot of things :)
I'm right there with you. Mine is 40 years old and it feels like everything is breaking all at the same time. I'm physically disabled, so that makes it all extremely difficult.
Thank you very much for your tutorial. This was a weekend project. It required a bit more work than I thought, but it was worth it in the end. You helped me out greatly, and I saved quite a bit of money, even though I had to buy many of the tools you mentioned. I know I will use them again someday elsewhere in the house, so I consider that an investment. Thank you so much for your help!
Thanks man, great video! I just dropped a pot plant on my tile and want to fix it myself rather than pay a ridiculous amount for min charge labour. You just schooled me up in 20mins!
I decided to learn how to replace my tile myself when I suspected I was being misled with a mighty price tag. I detest being manipulated, thanks for your video.
The Back Buttering idea is great. I have an old 1905 house with a slightly sloped kitchen floor. This extra tip will hopefully help keep my tile down. I have a few cracked tile to replace so I'm getting that oscillating tool you showed and thought about getting that Premixed SpectraLock 1 grout .. its $94 but its supposed to perform like Epoxy grout. My grout was coming out and chipping so I'll just redo it all.
This was a great explanation. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I had a couple of damaged tiles on the master, so I did not want a stranger working there. I bought most of the tools you have and I did it. The floor looks great...
To take out the cracked tile, you only need a hammer and small chisel. Break the center of the tile with the hammer to create an edge, use the chisel to fit between the tile and mastic and hit it with the hammer. Large pieces come out easily. THEN you can take out the grout. Keep it simple, don't overthink it.
I also discovered what a racket is the tile business. my floor wasn't grouted, they simply used the thinset to serve as grout, one enormous time saver and trick-of-the-trade I did discover and wholly respect. edit: for spelling
Thank you very much, I think you have probably one of the videos out there on this. I’ve just pulled up a few tiles in the bathroom and having a go myself, obviously I’ll need to seal mine, but your video has put me on the right path.
Came across your video and just noticed it’s 6 years old. I’ve watched a dozen or more videos on how to replace a cracked tile and yours was definitely the best and very helpful. I have a Divosta home that was built 20 years ago in south Florida, West Palm Beach to be exact m. For some reason all of a sudden the tiles started to pop up and after removing the tile some were hollow underneath which caused them to crack when stepped on. Why would this happen? The house is 20 years old and shouldn’t be settling anymore. Some of the thin set was loose and some was attached to the back of the tile. Thanks for the help my friend.
Homes are always shifting a little in many places, I would suspect however that maybe someone has dropped something in that area and it has started a problem, or if its a wood floor maybe you have some rot that is causing the floor to be weak and flexing ?
Surprised there has been no comments on three years. Thanks for video. Just used your technique for first time and worked perfectly. Used a diamond disc on a grinder though. It's what I had.
Thank you for your video! I will show it to my better half. Lol. 😁We have one bathroom tile to replace. Cracked when installed 18 yrs ago by tile installer.
Awesome video...have been procrastinating on a few broken tiles in my house. after this video, i am ready to tackle that project. thank you so very much
As usual you are very good at everything you do and your straight forward way of explaining and showing the hands on is fantastic. love to watch your presentations.
You can also use a razor knife to break the bond in the grout between tiles. It's quicker than sawing it out and eliminates potential damage from a grout saw. I've used it over and over again when removing a section and have completely eliminated transmission of the crack line to the next tile. It only takes a few passes too. But it will take a few blades if you're doing a lot of tiles.
Just want to say thanks. I've watched most of you videos and they are on par with this old house only more informational. I just recently (tonight) had to do this on a floor that I had just laid because a tile ended up getting chipped and it worked like a charm. Thanks again! Also used your framing video for framing my basement.....really thanks!
Thank you. This video became very helpful to me. I have a couple of broken tiles in my kitchen and was thinking how I can replace with new tiles without calling a professional. So, thank you and appreciate your demonstration including safety precautions.
Thanks for explaining why not to just smash the tile with the hammer 😅 I was definitely thinking about expediting the removal process by just hammering it 😂 20:27
Excellent clip, my case some one glued the base of the toilet to the floor and 2 only 16cm square tiles broke away. Temporary mounted the toilet and now to replace the 2 tiles.
Thank you so much for the video I actually removed my old tiles but I was not quite certain how to get back to a smooth surface about 10:26 in the video you showed exactly how to do that thank you so much and I really appreciate it 👍🌞👍
Thanks for the presentation! Small safety concern (00:56): you are touching the blade with your fingers while the tool is connected to power source. Thanks, again.
"That never should have come up that easy". Good one Shannon. Before that happened I was expecting you to say it wouldn't come up easy because you installed it! LOL Appreciate the help. My dumb arse would be starting on the outside and getting mad at all the additional work I was creating!
Have a question. Hopefully you see this and can answer. Okay I have gotten all the tile up, but what about the grout that is still connected to the good tile’s? Do I use the same tool and clean up the grout ? Or use the edge that use to get the thin set up?
@@HouseImprovements thank you. Your video was spot on. The only difference being that I didn’t have to drill, the 5 tiles being replaced were cracked from a foundation shift.
Does the hammering and forceful chiseling process risk damaging the subfloor or causing some long term impact on surrounding tiles that will eventually loosen them?
Excellent video! I need to replace on 12X12 tile in middle of kitchen and don't have any leftover tiles that match so I plan to "rob" one from under the fridge, but I need to remove it without breaking it or adjoining tiles. Do have a video on removing one tile without breaking it? Thanks.
@@HouseImprovements Would that also apply to a tile that has one open edge not touching another tile? The tile floor was installed on top of a linoleum floor. My thought was if I can cut through the grout and linoleum underneath I could remove it that way and then chip off the cement and linoleum from the tile. Thanks for the reply!
Loved this video and the other demo about putting tile down, would you do a video about mixing the mortar/thin set. Yours looked what I would call perfect, not to dry not to wet....do you start off with water first, then add the mix or the other way? Some tips would really be helpful and interesting. Thanks for all your hard work and interesting tidbits; I watch all your stuff!
+Dennis Morehouse We do not have a video for that at this time but it is on our list. Basically it is all about following the directions on the bag but unfortunately they all explain mixing an entire bag so you need to break down their instructions for smaller batches. I always try to put half of my water in the pail then the powder , mix a bit then keep adding the water till you get what you want for consistency.
Great video. Let's say you had to repair a loose tile that came up without effort. Is there a specific adhesive that the industry uses to secure the undamaged tile back to the floor and then follow up with re-grout?
I believe it would, you dont really see wire mess around here on modern installs. Usually if you have wire the tile is really old and chances of having or getting a match are slim.
i feel like very relaxing while watching this video. it seem easy when you have all the necessary tools to do the job but i am sure it takes experience to really do like what he did here. Thanks for sharing i have a lot of craked tiles and me and my son will experiment on it hahaha
I swear every time I need to look something up you're always right there with a detailed video. Thanks for all your help!
You are so welcome!
Canadians always sound so helpfully enthused. Like yourself. Thank you for your time.

As a mechanic who is tackling his own home repairs, I thank you for this very informative vid.

Excellent video Shannon! Thank you for redoing the realistic tile removal at the end . We appreciate you being so thorough!
Great video!
Small tip: You can decrease the amount of tile shards during chiseling by covering the tile with wide masking tape beforehand.

I decided to learn how to replace my tile myself when I suspected I was being misled with a mighty price tag. I detest being manipulated, thanks for your video.
Thank you for posting this video on cracked tile replacement. I have 3 kitchen tiles exactly the way you have shown in video to remove and replace!
You are welcome
I was nervous doing this, but after watching your video, think I am kind of motivated to give it a try.

This guy knows what he's talking about, proper craftsman.
What a beaut - first time here and feeling much more confident to repair myself because of the level of detail and instruction. Thank you!
Thanks for checking it out!
This has been the best demo i have seen thank you

Shannon, you are fantastic! Thank you very much for showing us home improvement DIY-ers how to do so many things!
I also discovered what a racket is the tile business.
my floor wasn't grouted, they simply used the thinset to serve as grout, one enormous time saver and trick-of-the-trade I did discover and wholly respect.

of course that made removing this "grout" impossible, had to purchase a multi-tool and diamond blades, so...but thinset as grout looks fine.
Excellent video. I am ready to attempt to replace one tile in my son’s house kitchen.
Thank you very much, I think you have probably one of the videos out there on this.

I have a job tomorrow that you just thoroughly explained every facet of. Next beer I crack open, definitely will be a cheers to you!
Exactly what I needed to know - thank you for the clear, easy-to-understand instruction!

Thanks for the refresher. It'll be very helpful. I have a loose kitchen tile and this should do the trick.
As usual you are very good at everything you do and your straight forward way of explaining and showing the hands on is fantastic. love to watch your presentations.
Thank you for your professional project sharing. And teach me how to deal with broken tile.
absolutely one of the best DIY videos I've ever watched!

Like using a utility knife? I've got a cracked tile that needs to be replaced. I don't have a grout saw.
Utility knife? Can't cut grout?
Seems the multitool doing better job.
Maxid1 no way
Excellent video. Solid concentrated information. I read a half dozen DIY books without getting nearly as much valuable detail. Thank you!
You saved my kitchen renovation. Thank you sooooo much. Your explanation was very clear and helpful.
You are welcome!

That was a terrific DIY presentation. I now feel confident in tackling this project. Thanks Shannon!
Very profesional demo. Best on RUclips. Thank you. This was a huge help.

This is super-helpful - thank you for taking the time to record and help the rest of us!!! :-) Appreciate it - thank you!

Thank you so much for this video. Tackling the project tomorrow bright and early
Love your video's! We have our own construction company but it's always nice to have other information
Thank you friend. Your expertise and advice is much appreciated. Keep-up he great work !!

Just changed a tile with your help, thank you so much!
Thanks for this video. Iv got a cracked tile from the previous owner and wanted to know what im getting into before I start.
Thumbs up and Thank You once again for taking your time to show us how it's done. You didn't have to but you did. You are a great guy.
Fantastic video, exactly what I needed to see, thank you.
Thanks for the video my wife will be happy now 😊
Your videos are great. Thanks for helping me out on another project. Only ask would be to show how to mix the tinset and grout.
MASTER JOB, THANK YOU CHARLIE

Thank you for this outstanding instructional video!
Sounds like a real pro, thanks, very helpful..
Thx for showing the trick. Can you suggest if tile has metal mesh under it, then how to clear the space for new tile. Thanks again.
cut it out and clean the space right out
