I've been in Iloilo and the only thing I can say is it's better than other cities in the Philippines. Lesser traffic, cleaner air, and plenty of infrastructures that supports healthy and relaxing lifestyle. Staying here was not as stressful as I had experienced in other Philippine Cities. People are disciplined and quite reserved compared to those from other cities.
Watching now, I have visited Iloilo City a couple times in the past. I did not go all around the city but it has grown since my trip in 2012. Texas filipino and That Philippine Life ( Canadian couple living in iloilo City) are two good means of getting the low down on Iloilo City. I would add that its on the Western part of Negros which would limit damages from Typhoons.
Paul, My sister-in-law lives in Iloilo City and she also has nothing negative to say about the city. With the info you provided and her insight, it is well worth a look-see should we decide to retire in the Philippines.
Hey Paul, another great video. I'd love to see you do a comparison of cities to retire in as related to weather. Risks of typhoons, floods, rainy seasons and temperature/humidity, etc. Thanks.
For typhoons, I'd say zero to 1 typhoon hits Iloilo City. In my 8 years stay in this city, I haven't experienced a major/catastrophic typhoon. You may take a look at the map for its location. For flood, we have a man-made river or floodway at Buhang, Jaro to redirect water from inlands of the island. It will flood in some areas maybe at ankle level or 1 foot high but generally it will not flood in major villages. The temperature I think is generally similar throughout the Philippines which is between 70°F to 90°F. Rainy season can be in between June/July to December/January. Our December and mid-January typically rains lightly (can't cause flooding) like almost everyday.

Truth be told, I am a bit surprised based on your presentation that you are choosing duma vs a place like Ilo, especially considering what you are really passionate about and what you are not. It seems like some of the more developed / amenity driven cities would cater to your wants / needs more, but as they say, where ever you go, that's where you are and it seems you are happy right there. Of course, this just might not be the place to discuss that line of thinking and we will find out if you make a change when we find out. If I was making a living online, and I (mostly) do, I would definitely find a place where the service is good to great. @@PaulWorldZoom Your welcome sir. Let me know if you need help looking for condos in business area or a single home apartment. We used to live in the city 7 years ago. We currently in the state, however we plan to retire in iloilo city hoping soon.
It's a perfect place to retire to, for introverted people. Locals here are more reserve. There's a night life however it's not as wild as in Manila and Cebu.
I always look at the crime rate as well as quality of hospitals. The crime rate is ranked 9th safest city with a moderate crime rate, overall. I am happy to hear your evaluation of the hospitals, as well!
There's also the new bridge project connecting the main islands, including Aklan (Boracay), and the fact Iloilo is the regional seat of government for the Western Visayas. Good long term prospects, say for real estate investment.
I did consider Iloilo and spent 2 weeks there. The place I stayed was good and the owners where awesome. It was a bit out of the way but had places to eat and a small mall in that area. To get to SM or Festive Mall it was about 15 to 20 minute taxi ride as there was always one area where traffic was really bad. There was 2 times the electric went out. Once was a very short time the other was longer but I happened to be at SM mall when that one hit. For me Iloilo is a nice place to visit and check out some of the historical places, museums, malls and restaurants but after that it is still too big and busy for me.
Paul the flower looks nice don't forget to water it...., I'm under the impression you're talking yourself to Iloilo Iloilo...., From what you're used to and what you like I would move in a heartbeat...., And your significant other would like that as well??
Hey Paul! I follow Texas Filipino and he lives in Iloilo. The city mayor has done wonders with the city and he said the hospitals were excellent. I was told there is not much of a nightlife there so that is something to consider. He owns a boat and has built a house but other than that it was rather boring. Thanks for sharing and God bless.
I was in Iloilo in June 2022 and we had a blast at Smallville area which I believe where the nightlife is. There are rows of bars and discos and restaurants which are open until late at night. We took a taxi back to Richmond Hotel but we did a walkabout at Megaworld Boulevard at 1 in the flipping morning, something that I wouldn't do in Great Britain at that hour, and yes it is very very safe city. And Yes, there is A nightlife although a bit toned down compared to other big cities but there definitely is a nightlife.
Iloilo is the cleanest, most bike-friendly, park/esplanade city in the Phil. An urban yet they retain that rural feel. Laidback yet with modern facilities.
Paul, another excellent video ! Between your endorsement and that of others in the comments, Iloilo is moving to the top of my list. I wonder if you are interested in suggestions, could you research what it would take to get a mortgage on an inexpensive condo in Iloilo, say from the US. Idea being, if I buy low, when I retire, having a fixed low mortgage payment would be easier to handle than increasing property costs if I were to start some years from now.
Great suggestion. At first thought I didn’t know that was possible to get a mortgage in the US when the property is in the Philippines. I tried that in BKK several years ago and the US banks said no. But I don’t know for sure. It is a great idea. I’ll check
@@PaulWorldZoom thank you Paul. It might be necessary to get the mortgage in the Philippines and somehow qualify from the US. I would suggest, given the increasing interest in condo ownership from expats, as well as the increasing price of those condos, there likely would be a significant demand for such a service and therefore a business opportunity.
Scaled up, This could eventually be an international corporation dealing with many Western countries, who would go through a conventional mortgage process as well as a property appraisal and certification process in the destination country.
I lived in iloilo for 5 years. Wonderful city. I also lived in olongapo for 6 years and now in negros oriental for 6 years. All are Wonderful places to live but my favorite is subic bay for sure.
Just feels like home to me and the availability of any kind of American foods. I just feel so at home in subic bay. That's where we lived when my daughter was very young. Perhaps I miss that more than anything.

There are several really appealing areas in PH. I definitely don't see PH as a single place. There are a bunch of cities that are all the same, lots of trash, trikes, jeepneys, poor conditions. But then there are these progressive spots that are like a different country. So that's how I'm looking at PH, not as a country but as a specific destination. Forget coffee, I start my day with a video from "World Zoom." It's more satisfying! Good info Paul. Is the city subject to Typhoons or other natural disasters? Also, is there "Grab" or any kind of mass transit?
I am interested in moving to Cebu, Mactan, or Iloilo. Do any of these areas support the ability for me to go to the beach and snorkel without the need of a service provider? I am retired military, therefore cost of living is not really a concern. I would really enjoy the ability to snorkel an active reef, without needing to schedule a dive outfit to do it.
Other than Guimaras island which is a minute boat ride away, you can go also farther North of Iloilo where a lot of Best Island for snorkeling. Panay Island as a whole as well as Guimaras Island is ideal for snorkeling where a lot of beautiful beaches is located, not to mention that Boracay Island is 5hours drive away.
Dumaguete/Dauin 100% yes. Amazing shore diving and snorkeling. Iloilo is a yes also but requires a short trip. I haven’t heard good things about snorkeling in Cebu. But a lot close by
Iloilo is located in Panay Island. in Panay there are 4 provinces. Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Antique. Iloilo is the center of business. 20 minute boat ride from the city takes you to Guimaras Island! you can swim and snorkel there! it also has a turtle sanctuary 2-3 hours drive from Iloilo takes you to Antique ( pronounced An- tee- keh) they have awesome marine flaura and fauna! 1 1/2- 2 hours drive takes you to Capiz province, they have awesome and cheap seafood! 3-5 hours takes you to Aklan province where Boracay is located! there are little islands near Boracay island that has good snorkeling spot
iloilo Universities produce some of the top nurses and doctors in the country, which eventually seek better employment opportunities abroad. So i could confidently say that healthcare providers there are reliable/efficient. Only thing though, you would need to pay out of pocket- as with the rest of the Philippines ...

Mt. Napulak is the highest mountain in iloilo. Iloilo has a lot of mountains in Igbaras, Miagao and Tubungan which is connected in Province of Antique. Iloilo is covered by the island of Negros and Guimaras thus it is rarely affected by typhoon.
Iloilo city is surrounded by white sand beaches in Guimaras, northern Iloilo Gigantes and of course world-famous Boracay is 4hours away by land. Central Iloilo province is surrounded by mountains for hiking, resorts and other land activities

Iloilo, the city of Love. The business center and call centers provide for a larger educated and younger demographic, resulting in a middle to upper middle class population. The retired expat population is moderate, for now, lol.
@@PaulWorldZoom Hahaha, I’m glad you have seen the light! There's a RUclips vlogger post titled "Which is the best City? Iloilo, Bacolod, or Cebu" It's of an interview with one of the Philippine’s top chefs that travels around the country as part of his job. Like so many other videos you get a sense of political corrective-ness when asking foreigners or locals to compare different parts of the Philippines. The Chef is dining and drinking while being interviewed, and as the drinking continues the truth becomes clearer. Thank you for being honest about the P.I. The Dumaguete "Boys" are quite obviously biased as they continue to promote their Duma EXpat empire of senior westerners. A resurgence of the “ole boy” clan, far across the sea, lol. What's seems to be missing from their posts is the community engagement to help make Dumaguete a better place for all.

I'm going to live in a different city sequentially starting with Manila (Newport City) and work my way around to other cities & provinces as I get acquainted with the PI up until I die. Ilo-ilo is on my list. Thanks!
I'd been thinking the same, but I like a home base....but now starting to think maybe moving around might be better. I'll have to wait until I'm in country to really know. I really have no idea. I've spent my life moving every 7-15 years in the US and Europe and have realized there is no perfect place. If a place is really great a bunch of people move in making it less great. Evens things out. I've even moved to places I disliked the idea of, like here in Phoenix, last place in the US I wanted to move to and that becomes the appeal. Can I adapt? After 15 years in Phoenix I love it here. Now I don't really want to move to SE Asia...but that's the appeal. So I do't really have to try a bunch of cities probably. IMO it's really impossible to say with staying just 6-12 months. I have to adapt and that takes longer.
I have basically the same plan, except I would start in Iloilo and that would be my base. I would only rent, and maybe later, if I really liked Iloilo the best, I would probably buy a condo where a hospital and everything else is within walking distance. I would like to find a place that is not to hot so I wouldn’t need AC.
if you like the comfort of modernization, Boracay it is! it's like a little city now! banks, restos, big fast food chains! lots of hotels and condos, Night life and the beach is still one heck of a lovely place! powder white sand and one of the best sunset views!
@@xeechet6290 Thank you, thank you for your information! Boracay sounds dreamy. 😃🥳 My only questions are how good is the power and internet, and does it have quality stand-a-lone houses?

Hello Paul , Great info it is sounding that IIoilo LLoilo could be the place to check out for sure , I think I mentioned before i was there many years ago and yes it was very dirty not a place you would consider moving to , as was Bacolod both were off the list .Now Bacolod has become very nice also , both places are in very good locations . As for other places I really recommend going North on Luzon Pangasinan is lovely and going up the coast to the lovely old city of Vigan very Spanish ,there is also a beautiful resort called Vitalis Villas its a copy or Santorini in Italy amazing place that whole coastline all the way up to Pagudpud is outstanding . Few people go North the plus is the price is very good less people there is so much to see , you can do side trip to Sagada to the hanging coffins a must do also go to Banaue rice terraces they call them the 8th wonder of the world it will blow your mind so beautiful . Then there is good old Baguio all this can be done on one trip great bus service to all these place. Thanks Paul .
Ok, since you refuse to do a live report from Iloilo, I will have to go and figure out if I like it. 😂 Other things to consider: Is it safe, Banking/ATM access, transportation(trikes, cabs, and/or grab) pharmacies(are they stocked with common OTC’s and prescription drugs), laundry, western items available in grocery stores, Wi-Fi and cell service, is it easy to communicate with English there, and is the immigration office for visas good.
Banks are all around the city, as for transportation there is Buses, taxis and local jeepneys that you can choose. Big pharmacies scattered around the metro. Laundry shops you can find anywhere as well as grocery stores. S&R and The Marketplace where you can find western items. English is spoken in Iloilo and you will not find any problem as well as immigration office is located in Festive walk parade.
Not wanting to be invaded by westerners, I am not prepared to divulge where my wife lives, however there are gorgeous deserted beaches less than 10 minutes ride away and the amenities are improving all the time.
What do you mean ‘where your wife lives’… where are you? And that said, with all due respect, come on @ulysses fewl, one comment here does not a gold rush make, so come on! Share the wealth… perhaps people will at least want to visit and spend their money and help the people / economy there while enjoying some natural beauty.

Well, Iloilo is now on my must visit list. 👍
You should! Great plan
Thanks for that Brian. Very interesting. I wondered about the taxi service

Not much of a nightlife? Sounds good to me. I want to sleep at night.
@@Amen.22 exactly..I could careless about nightlife
It has a lot of night life here in iloilo city, Smallville area is a place to go and a lot more in Mandurriao, Molo and Jaro Districts.
Thanks I always watch him. Nice videos. That boat is huge. He is where I first saw Iloilo City. Thanks
Plant looks good Paul 👍🏻 👌🏻 Appreciate the review and will look this city up.
Thanks, I hope you check it out.

It’s always a good way to live in other cities even for a couple of weeks to know it prior choosing your forever home/retirement place.
Very true! Thanks Mike. You have a lot of places to check out.
Iloilo is the cleanest, most bike-friendly, park/esplanade city in the Phil. An urban yet they retain that rural feel. Laidback yet with modern facilities.

@@PaulWorldZoom thank you my friend
Paul, another excellent video ! Between your endorsement and that of others in the comments, Iloilo is moving to the top of my list. I wonder if you are interested in suggestions, could you research what it would take to get a mortgage on an inexpensive condo in Iloilo, say from the US. Idea being, if I buy low, when I retire, having a fixed low mortgage payment would be easier to handle than increasing property costs if I were to start some years from now.
I imagine such a video would be extremely popular

This video is great to hear as Iloilo is the city/area I was zeroing in on for a long term goal. It seems to have the proper mix of Modern and nature that i like being from the PNW. Also theres a budding geek/nerd community there so thats also a plus.
Would like to hear more about a geek community. I was a software engineer in tech startups, still love it and would like to work with locals.

Good info Paul. Is the city subject to Typhoons or other natural disasters? Also, is there "Grab" or any kind of mass transit?
Thanks so much, that made me smile.
They have Grab and a new, great small bus system that will do circles in the popular areas. Cheap and clean
Iloilo is the best place to retire. 15.minutes ferry ride to guimaras island which offer alot of diving and snorkel activities
But a lot close by
Tiolas, San Joaquin.
Iloilo is located in Panay Island. in Panay there are 4 provinces. Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Antique.
Iloilo is the center of business. 20 minute boat ride from the city takes you to Guimaras Island! you can swim and snorkel there! it also has a turtle sanctuary
2-3 hours drive from Iloilo takes you to Antique ( pronounced An- tee- keh) they have awesome marine flaura and fauna!

Good point. I have also had questions about that. I’ll check. Thanks for the kind words
The bike paths sound nice. What about swimming places? Is Iloilo in the typhoon zone? Are there mountains in Iloilo?
I know it is blocked by Negros Occidental but still gets hit. For sure on the swimming. Also a couple nearby islands. Thanks
As for mountains, ohhhhh darling you'll gonna love it here.
Another city to visit thank you

There's a RUclips vlogger post titled
"Which is the best City? Iloilo, Bacolod, or Cebu"
It's of an interview with one of the Philippine’s top chefs that travels around the country as part of his job.
Few expats, and most are married with ilonggas.
Thanks for the info about Iloilo, I've just started my search for a city there. I need internet and dealing with brown outs would not be a thing for me.
Good idea. Most places have reliable internet. Not Dumaguete
Great Video Paul! I watch all of yours! Do you think Iloilo is a good choice for a 63 year old single American who still hasn’t figured out if he wants to stay single or settle down?

Great idea I will for sure. Thanks
Paul! I'm debating between Iloilo and Davao... but I need to ask you... Which one is better to meet pretty filipinas?
I think you would have an outstanding choice regardless. Thanks
Iloilo. Davao is just overrated because of Dutertes
Ha, great. Sounds like an awesome plan 👍
You asked for suggestions on places, I would love a breakdown on Boracay. I've seen it listed as one of the very best beaches in the world.
Hi John. Exactly yes. I haven’t been there. I’m glad it is open
if you like the comfort of modernization, Boracay it is! it's like a little city now! banks, restos, big fast food chains! lots of hotels and condos, Night life and the beach is still one heck of a lovely place! powder white sand and one of the best sunset views!
@@xeechet6290 Thank you, thank you for your information! Boracay sounds dreamy. 😃🥳
My only questions are how good is the power and internet, and does it have quality stand-a-lone houses?
Is it actually worth buying a condo in the Philippines, like Iloilo for example? Or is it just better to rent in general?
Fair question, I feel both Thailand and the Philippines are safe condominium purchase destinations. I have had a couple and a house in Thailand with no problems at all. Easy to buy and easy to sell
Negative? The rent and utilities are high vs. Dumaguete, according to your example.
Okay, I see your point. Thanks
Not that high. Its higher coz Iloilo is way advanced than dumaguete. It has the amenities that dumaguete doesnt have

Have you done one on Baguio yet?
No I haven’t been there yet. Hopefully coming soon
Question: after working in law enforcement and various natural disasters. What might be the best to settle in?
I would think any relatively urban area. Cebu or Davao maybe?
Iloilo city has ICARE command center located in various areas. It stands for Iloilo City Action and Responce Center where Risk Reduction and Management office is located. It houses with Police, Fire Department and Emergency Response team.
What is the best cellular service in iloilo for reliability . Smart or Globe ??
I like Smart, but either are okay
Why are you living in Dumaguete and not moving to Iloilo.
Ha, I like them both. I like Manila too 👍
Iloilo is Good but for some reason it didn't jump out at Me but I'd like to Explore Panay island outside Iloilo City
Lucky we have so many great choices 👍
Even Dumaguete with 140K people is approaching the “too big” status for me. Even with that many people it may not seem big. I’ll be there on Feb 26 so I’m looking forward to having boots on the ground. Maybe I’ll see you there.
I hope you do. It is still weird for me when someone says, World zoom or Paul. It is cool.
