@Brooke Morrison What's interesting is that most of their "scandals" people in America wouldn't even bat an eye. Some are actually even legal common things like, Marijuana and gambling in Vegas casinos.

They're actually the pioneer in a lot of things, from the lightsticks and changing haircolors/hairstyles, tattoos, going shirtless. They don't keep up with the "good boy idol" image. They're Big BIG in Korea, Korean people say that BIGBANG is like picking 5 superstars and form into one group. They're BIG and respected as solo artist.
They have a song for every mood, hope you'll dive more into them especially their ballads. The group produce compose and write their own music and is very involved in everything from producing to stages, concerts.

GD was inspired and UPGRADED the idea hence made the first OFFICIAL Lightstick (BangBong). Their lightstick strategy was to set themselves apart from other fandoms using the shape of the design, rather than just color.
And ultimately other fandoms to this day adopted BIGBANG'S idea of "lightsticks". Becoming super widespead.

You need to watch their live performances, that is when they really shine. Is not like Korea was less conservative in 2012 is that the second gen was more bold . For example it was a scandal to dye your hair , GDragon made all the rainbow colours posible. I feel that this generation is so much about companies not taking risks . They have this fan market already , they have all the experience of the previous gen , they stay with what it selles .The 2 gen really set out to conquer the world , they walked in uncharted teritory and no one knew what to do and what will work. Idols now play it safe . You know how they say Good boys go to heaven Bad boys go wherever they want . The most memorabile moments in kpop where given by these "bad idols" . We got GD diss MAMA , Lee Hyori and TOP kissed , Hyuna kissing during Trouble maker stage at MAMA .

It is not like that Kpop industry was not so conservative back then. It's just the BIGBANG. They are true to theirselves and not hesitate to show who they are as they are.
Bigbang became famous not only for their music but for being unique than everyone. While every group is afraid to be different, they are the first group I've known who made their own color, and that's one of the reason why people loved them. BigBang is not your typical Kpop. Kings indeed 💅
,These 2 MVs are very tame. I wish people react to not just Bang Bang Bang and Fantastic Baby. They actually have a diverse discography. Please check you check out Bae Bae, Loser, Zutter, Sober, Cafe, If You, Blue, Last Dance. Vips will tell you that most of us care more for their live performance. The live stage has always been their playground. They never had to dance to command the stage.
They are an anomaly in kpop since they typically release a full album every 3 to 4 years. They are a 15-year group but they only have 67 songs in their discography with only 3 full albums. While Kpop groups nowadays churn out songs like they were made from a factory line. Imagine I know a group that released about 60 songs in just 1 year. They are all soloist so in between their group hiatus they also release solo albums, do solo tours
By Kpop standards they are controversial but let's be honest if you compare them to Western artist they are actually not controversial at all. It's just never cared for the squeaky clean sanitized image that kpop idols have these days. They date, have tattoos, smoke cigarettes in public, go clubbing . They have always been unapologetically themselves from the very start. Kpop stans nowadays will be clutching pearls if their faves even do what BB does. TBH kpop is pretty boring these days while 1st gen and 2nd gen idols were experimental, have very distinct identities and were never afraid to show personalities.

Exactly, even thou im not even 4 gen cuz im young, i know big bang when i was 10-11 years old and it will always my fav... Its kinda sad that this gen ( or my gen ) is full of toxicity and always hav a war ( or a fight ) with other kpops fan... They're very bold/ masculine type of group. They're known for their individuality. Like you can never imagine that they're in the same group:) i love them for being genuine. What u see is what u get. Don't worry BIGBANG have a solid fanbased even after 6 yrs hiatus they're still on the top. And if ever they decide to make a comeback, it will surely blow up.

Fantastic Baby and the Alive album was BigBang comeback after a hard period full of scandals. This is why you see them frozen , chained , TOP is trapped in a painting, GDs hair grew long from waiting . They took in consideration disbanding but fans got together and outvoted artists like Britney Spears and gave BigBang the first international award for a kpop artist. It was an MTV Europe Award in 2011. If you want to understand BigBang better and how hard things have been for them I suggest you listen to Still Alive . There is no MV but you can find lyrics videos on RUclips.

I remember back then there were BigBang and 2PM, they were known for sexy and masculine group. As times goes on, BigBang getting famous, they tried so many things - different style, fashion. They influenced Korean entertainment industry. They were idol of idol before BTS came.
And they are still are...IDOL of every Idol out there...
WHY THEY'RE CALLED KINGS 1. They're still running in the KPOP industry for 14 years and now. So many scandals yet they're still standing on the stage. Performing. Hitting #1s on korean music streams without promotion or music videos published. 2. They're one of the KPOP groups who go international first. They spread the Hallyu wave all over the world. It's even impressive because internet is not really popular before, but that didn't stop them for being a star. Times, Grammy's, KCA, MTV, Billboards, etc. 3. BIGBANG helped introduce EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and Rap. Before, it was mainly R&B, Ballad, and Pop. 4. They broke the stereotypes. Before BIGBANG, every idols in a boy group were seen as robotic, flower/ boy style and with synchronized dancing and singing. 5. Idols were never considered as artists before with lyricism and production. They even influenced kpop artists of today to compose their own. 6. They're the celebrity of celebrities. Most people adore and are a fan of them. KPOP groups, actors, politicians etc. Mostly from KPOP industry. They're inspired and influenced by them. 7. The SONGS. BIGBANG doesn't create just create catchy songs, Some songs, the lyricism is so magnificent. They're meaningful and filled with emotions you want to feel. 8. Their stage presence. No one can beat their stage presence. The stage is powerful once they're performing. Every performance are eye catching. No lipsync reguired. All songs live.
9. BIGBANG saved YG Entertainment. YG Entertainment before BIGBANG is just a small company. But BIGBANG were struggling for food to eat because they don't have enough money and GDragon composes a song every night. But all the hardships are worth it. 10. Most fans don't idolized them because of looks, just pure talent. They were even called the "ugliest KPOP boy group" back in the days they were debuted. But people don't care for it, because the talent wins. 11. They're the first to use lightstick. Well before it was called "glowstick". Before it was just balloons and color to identify kpop groups. 12. They popularized EPs or Mini Albums. It started when they drop their album "Always" and with the hit song "Lies". That's why they're unbeatable. We can say, they're so many KPOP groups who are popular these days, but BIGBANG are untouchable. No one can imitate or copy beside themselves. Truly the legends of KPOP. They really deserved it.ô

One should understand that KPOP in general is CONSERVATIVE, CONTROLLED. Hence KPOP idols before have the reputation of being DOLLS that companies produce from a doll factory.
Then came BIGBANG and 2NE1, esp BIGBANG. They broke that stereotype. Shook the whole KPOP industry. So everyone in KPOP got to experience how to be wild, bold and free. Everyone loves it, follows it.
Then BIGBANG went into hiatus. And everyone wasn't able to maintain that hence they went back to their former self. Conservative. Controlled. It got worse though coz now they are not only controlled by their companies, they are also controlled by their fans. KPOP idols went back to being dolls with puppet masters.
That's the difference. BIGBANG is in charge of themselves and their music artistry. No one can control them. Even YG or YGE can't conrol them. Hence VIPs (BIGBANG fandom) don't control BIGBANG. They accept whatever BIGBANG dishes out. If one doesn't like it, they are free to go. BIGBANG won't hold you back. So either you stay, or you leave. Your choice. 😊😊😊

Big Bang started the norm to dye their hair different and bright colors normally other idols would only dye their hair brown or blonde ( Especially true for g dragon)

And especially during the 2nd Gen (and a lil bit in 3rd gen) Yg was notorious for creating artists first then idols focusing on talent and and creativity than looks and what is known today in K-pop hence why Big Bang , 2ne1 , Ikon , Winner , Akmu and Leehi (I didn’t name two other groups because there debuts was morely focused on the publics image of a kpop group when it came to visuals and Psy and Epik High only signed with yg for a while and weren’t made by yg) had such a impact because they all weren’t as conventional as other groups and soloist in the industry and it may be somewhat the reason why there were more scandals in the company and and why YG himself had to step down from ceo and why you can see the change in what was known for as YGE’s signature nature to now sadly kinda being moved a different way and slightly straying from the original unique ,bad ass, creative, non conventional and unruly nature which was a staple in the company and individuals (can only wait to see the future and how it’ll change)
This is the first group that did everything different and changed boy group - FD us the biggest fashion icon - he skis write a kit if their songs. He came up with the light stick. They’re concerts were so amazing. Check them out Mana awards 2013
Big Bang, followed by 2PM, were the two most masculine groups in Kpop and for different reasons. While Big Bang were masculine in their attitude and the way they carried themselves, 2PM were known as the beastly idols for having the large, rippled physiques. And both groups had members that didn’t give a crap about being shirtless. Lol. Idols now are so conservative but also have qualms about showing their bodies if they’re not “perfect” or up to standards. Even then 1st and 2nd gen idols, male and females, were able to socialize more on variety shows and now they seem to keep them separate. It’s sad.

Well Brooke, that is if you can because BIGBANG does not have a full choreo and they're known for just naturally winging their moves. That's a lie because they do have choreographies but they use minimalistic moves which ironically is very hard to replicate, unless you have G-Dragon and Taeyang with their solo stuff then you'll see choreo. Their earlier stuff 2006-2009 does have some choreographies but they stopped having complete choreos around 2011.

Couple of fun facts: T.O.P. Is also a really well known actor and has done K-dramas like Iris and movie Tazza; he does not like to show his body and he’s always covered (he got rejected during auditions in the beginning because he was “fat” so he unhealthily lost crap ton of weight within a month and was able to join Big Bang), I think he was shirtless in a quick scene in Tazza(?) but he was miserable doing that; he does not look people in the eyes when he doesn’t know you, even when he’s acting, he’ll look everywhere but into the actor’s eyes (he’s good at “hiding” it (he does that because he’s extremely shy).
Daesung’s (one with bowl cut covering his eyes in Bang Bang Bang) father was initially against him joining and being a kpop idol (father was/is devout/very religious man).
GD (G-Dragon; his Korean name is Kwon Ji (G)-Yong (Dragon)) and he joined YG when he was 12.
Doesn't it make more sense, that Big Bang broke the norms, rather than the norms somehow being less restrictive in 2011 than they are now?

I dunno. Burning Sun was quite a real scandal. As was Daesung running over that guy was a pretty real scandal as well (even if he was cleared for the guy's death, he still did run him over).
@@hanng1242 you seem pretty misinformed. Daesung didn’t run over the guy. Daesung crashed into a taxi which then moved to run over the guy. The guy on the motorcycle was drunk driving. The only mistake of Daesung was speeding and unable to stop his vehicle in time due to the low visibility during night time. Also, you seem to have mixed up the case of Seungri and Burning Sun which are actually not even related. That's not a costume. That's lion dance but Korean style. Lion dance is a traditional thing in China and some Asian countries but Korean and Chinese lion are totally different. And the seaweed hair gdragon had was his real hair, it was indeed very iconic. The guy u like is Taeyang. I noticed most westerners like taeyang more
I listen to kpop since wondergirls but bigbang is the one who got me drawn into it.
More bigbang pls. You need to react to Loser, love song and sober. They're not the typical boy group. They were breaking norms left and right and just did not give a fck. That's actually the reason why they were popular.

YG artists have different style from other kpop groups be it their songs, choreo, fashion, MVs, live performances, etc. They have their own identity. They're not afraid to experiment.
There's such a weird dichotomy in K-pop. It's so conservative in the way that it censors idols, yet the effeminate presentation of male idols (by Western standards) is quite literally the opposite of conservative.

WOW!! I’m new to KPOP but I’ve heard of this group and a few of the artists as solos a few times. I do have a Gdragon song on my playlist. But got a little more interested when I saw the mashup that ATEEZ did of Fantastic Baby/Nillili Mambo/The Real on Immortal Songs King of Kings.

You should check out Bigbang! I am a VIP but but also an Atiny and one of the things that made me fall in love with Ateez was that their stage presence and passion reminded me of bigbang... and Hongjoong is so talanted, he reminded me of GD ^_^

I think one of the things you got wrong is the "It was really popular back then" and that they "inserted everything 2011 into one video".
They set the trend 😂😂😂 No one had GD's seaweed hair until he did it. TOP's mint coloured hair was also started by him. They were "rebels" in terms of fashion back then, and they (esp GD) experimented a lot because they had the freedom to by their company lol. They kinda were the first idol group to promote individuality in stage costumes because back then, almost everyone had their own stage uniforms. That also was done for their junior groups 2NE1 and then Winner, iKon, and now blackpink, hence why the styling is always so cohesive despite being different. They have experimented enough to know what to do.
Way back when BTS first started, they even listed Big Bang as who they looked up to. A lot of things BTS does now is evolved from what Big Bang did. Big Bang was one of the first successful idol groups to self-produce their music, and their success allowed many other companies to trust their artists to produce too. I think V had mentioned before that he looked up to GD's facial expressions on stage and it is no wonder he is so good on stage now too.
(Now before the armys come after me, back when this happened, I was an active army and I know of the whole VIP hating on armys situation. But I am not making things up)
They also normalised the whole "going solo while still coming back to promote as a group" kinda thing. They werent the first, but they were the few groups back then where all their members had hit songs solo when not promoting in their group!
You really need to check out their other songs too, especially their lyrics. That's where it impresses the general public in SKor. There are a lot of VIPs, sure, but there is a reason why their songs always shoot up the charts when they are released ^^

Bigbang is the definition of kpop
The first reason why Bigbang became big is because of their self-produced songs back c.2008. Then, they were known for having the most amazing live performances. Then, they caught the interest of the fashion industry. They made the first personalized lightstick. Their sound is always something "new" in Kpop and they're always THE trendsetters in Kpop, not just in terms of fashion but in K-culture most importantly. YG is liberal in its artists' songs and K-youngsters, being somehow trapped in a very conservative culture, are drawn to their form of freedom. They are praised by senior artists from the entertainment industry, not just Kpop. They "made" YG (and that comes from the main producer himself).
Can check their live performance/concerts. They are different charisma when you see them live..
those styles and elements in their music videos are so 2012 / 2015 or were trending in South Korea because of BIGBANG.

However...some of your remarks sounded rather patronising. If you've only listened to 4th & some 3rd gen groups then you probably don't know how good 2nd gen music was and the great music they're still producing, and everything they did to make K-pop what it is today. It's also pointless to say things like "that was so 2015", "that was such a 2011 thing", because a) it WAS 2015, and b) in 5-10 years people will be saying the same thing about current songs - "that was so 2021". Furthermore, that song was groundbreaking in 2015, and it was Bigbang setting the trend, not them throwing every trend into a song, lol. And yes, you are right, they are real men, not like most of the milksops so popular these days.
I never liked Kpop before. But I would listen to 2ne1 songs before of Dara. Then it was during the pandemic last year when I tried searching for the name GDragon since I've been hearing it for years. The first time I saw him, and Bigbang , I never stopped, now I'm a super fan. I also tried watching other artists specifically YG and others like IU
You gotta watch Taeyang's Solo stuff like wedding dress, only look at me, where u at MVs they were like one of the iconic ones. Also haru haru by Big bang
BigBang are the kings of kpop, especially GD. There was originally one more when they trained and he was cut by YG. Jang Hyunseung (debuted with beast and troublemaker) is still friends with them.
GD has written over 20 number one songs. He was listed as a one of Korea's top 10 greatest composers in 2008. He has over 170 songs under his belt, as he has composed for other artists (ie: IU). Also, GD is working on a comeback album. Hopefully he will do another Collab with CL.

Honestly I got tired of bang bang bang and fantastic baby pretty quick but back in the day they were bangers. Their live performances tho is what really set them apart and you can see how they influenced BTS and many other kpop groups. Bigbang was and is still a group that sets trends rather than follow trends in their music and especially fashion. Check out their other stuff and definitely MAMA performances!

I miss my King GD 👑🐉 n his legendary group Bigbang soooo much! 🥺 Since 2018 when most of Bigbang members went for military duties they r on hiatus till now even though leader GD n Bigbang renewed their contracts with YG in 2020 which caused YG share price to rise, but GD is still not keen to comeback yet. Think only The Legends can renew contracts with big entertainment company n refused to show themselves in any performance for coming to 2 yrs!
So many fans have desperately waited almost 4 yrs till recently Korean fans send protest truck outside YG. King GD has disappeared himself into thin air for about 4 yrs yet this year's China search engine results for most top searched celebrity is Gdragon, King of Kpop! 👑 He is really One of a kind! 😘❤🌸🙏

Yep, kpop has become super conservative over the years and everything causes a scandal nowadays. It's really pretty stupid and annoying in my opinion. I'm a 35-year-old fan since 2010 and I've seen the change. Not to upset anyone, but I think it's mainly because there's a lot of new and young fans who like to overreact and the saint syndrome has spread from South Korean fans. All new fans should have a crash course to kpop history and common sense, that would maybe help. Heh. BB have always been the trailblazers, different and done whatever they want, be it Taeyang and his famous hate of shirts or tattoos on them and so on. (There were more of these manly groups back in the day, the first that comes to my mind is 2PM. They had a nickname of the beastly idols.. all were tall, ripped and very handsome. They are still active.)
Bigbang is my ult group! BB debuted in 2006 and there's 5 members: G-Dragon (GD), Taeyang, TOP, Daesung and Seungri. Seungri is an ex-member... but I refuse to think about that and Bigbang is 5 in my head still. They've had a huge impact on the whole of kpop industry. From being the first idols to compose, write and produce their music (mostly GD), first mini album, first lightstick, first worldtour, first international award, first undergound rapper, first actual rapline, introducing new music genres to kpop, bringing high fashion to kpop, solo careers without disbanding.. and so on. They are the blueprint that many companies have used to form the newer kpop boy groups we see today.
They have a very diverse discography from pop-rock to hiphop to rap and everything in between and all the members have their own solos with their own flare. I would suggest to listen to their most recent album MADE. That is a masterpiece of an album.
Most of the numerous "scandals" are just grown men living their life and South Korean media hating on BB members. They for some reason have always hated BB from their debut days. There have been only a few actual scandals but those have all been solved. I would try to get confirmed information about these if you are interested, not to read comments on youtube... antis and non-VIPs like to spread false information, most likely just because they have read it somewhere and spread it onwards as truth.
There's no subtitles in most of 2nd gen kpop MV's. Those started to be popular only around 2015-2016. We just looked up translations online (I hear genious is a pretty reliable place to find translations) and hoped they were somewhat accurate. :D But GD especially (and TOP) is known for using pretty complex wordplay and Koreans pronouns in his lyrics that are hard to translate for us non-korean speakers.
