Decade of the 70s has immense music and talent, it’s there you just need to find it react to it and love it… Thank God we can go back to this kind of music! It does to you today what it did back then makes you stop what you’re doing and sit back and listen to amazement
Greg Lake (RIP) was a master musician, playing acoustic, electric and bass guitar, in addition to being one of the most beautiful voices in contemporary music. And the outro was the amazing Keith Emerson on keyboards. My personal favorite ELP song!! 💙💙💙
Hard to rank 'em; that's one of the problems I run into trying to rank Moody Blues albums or songs -- they're all such masterpieces. But as far as ELP this is probably my #1 track. Next five in no particular order would be "C'est la Vie," "Still You Turn Me On," "Lucky Man," "Karn-evil 9," and "Fanfare for the Common Man."
This is the first song i played for my girlfriend back in 1977. We were married in 1981! 40 years now......."you see it's all clear, you were meant to be here"
This was ELP's highest-charting single -- which I find mystifying as there were plenty of tracks they laid down that were every bit as easy on the ears as "From the Beginning." All in how it's marketed, I guess. Not enough people at the time got much of a chance to hear this tune unless they were permanently tuned to trendy FM stations. At least now it's getting another look and is better appreciated as a masterpiece.
My favorite ELP track... bar none. It may be one of the best 20 songs ever - - just magically smooth and oh so intelligent. It is simply mesmerizing and should only be listened to with headphones, for obvious reasons.
@@ccbiezenbos I was a huge fan in the early 1970ies and saw them live at centennial hall London Ontario in 1992 the halls tiny and it was a awesome show and we were 40 feet from the stage . We had fantastic music and much kinder society and always questioned authority lolo.
I highly recommend "Take A Pebble". It shows off the skills of all three in a context that doesn't get overblown, and is both quite beautiful and musically interesting.
Oh my. THAT song is so gorgeous isn't it??? "Take A Pebble" !!! Yes I would love Jamal's expressions on that song too. I knew there was another song I wanted to mention that was it!
Try ELP’s song “Still...You Turn Me On” next, I think that you’ll like it. I saw them in concert in the early Seventies, they melted my teenage brain. Thanks for all of the great music, memories and smiles. Take care.
I got a chance to see the original ELP line-up (with Palmer rather than Powell) in 1996; they were the opening act for Jethro Tull. That was a fantastic concert.
JAMEL - SOOOO glad you got to this song.... The singer Greg Lake played ALL the guitars, Acoustic, Electric and Bass. And THAT was a Moog synthesiser.. played by the master Keith Emerson.
Sometimes I forget about this song and then I hear it again and it takes me to a faraway place somewhere back in time. I always love to hear it. I loved your reaction. I could see you were taking it in and having a moment. Nice!
I was 18 years old first concert ever. Floor seats in front couple roads back. Carl palmers drum set rotating and Emerson on his keyboard way ahead of his time definitely perfection and Lakes voice beyond. Nothing compares after that.
I have a memory with this song, my dad took my brother and I when we were very young to Pales Verdes, hiked down the cliff to see an old wrecked ship, must have heard it in the car 1972. It will always remind me of my dad. He's still here, 90 years old. ❤️❤️❤️
Not just my Favorite Emerson, Lake, and Palmer song (Still, You Turn Me On...a close second)...BUT this song is in my Top 10 All Time Favorite Songs period...It simply takes me through a range of Emotions and Transports me to another Dimension~
I was lucky enough to see them three times; phenomenal musicianship, great shows. All three just dominated the stage. And Keith absolutely mauled his B3! I loved how he stood between the B3 and a grand piano, playing both at the same time with arms outstretched. Just fabulous.
I think that Emerson abused a Hammond L100 on stage. He treated the B3 a little kinder. Whatever he paid his roadie / tech, it wasn’t enough. 😉 I think that Palmer had two gongs. In Prog Rock, nothing succeeds like excess.
I was young at the right time: the Who, Pink Floyd, the Kinks, Neil Young, ELP, David Bowie, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Ike and Tina, Byrds, Edgar Winter, Moody Blues...
I remember hearing "C'est La Vie" for the first time in a down town Salt Lake City music store playing on a really great stereo so I asked the clerk and she told me the name of the song and band. Later that summer ELP came to town and I saw them in concert. "Oh what a lucky man I was"😉
Actually "C'est La Vie" is a solo by Greg Lake featured on the album "Works".....But you're Right it is a beautiful song! Also "Closer to Believing"...One of the most spiritual songs I've heard...PEM
Learned how to play this song back in high school. Such a brilliant composition. Greg Lake is an amazing guitarist, although he played the bass most of the time. Keith Emerson (the keyboardist) was pretty 'tame' in this, but he was actually a demon XD he used all sorts of synth tech to (aggresively) make weird sounds but can very delicate with a piano. A couple of my favorite is 'Take a Pebble' and 'Hoedown' (if you want to hear how crazy the keyboardist can be). Cheers :)
That's all Greg Lake on guitar and singing. He even did the bass part for the song as well. One of the most beautiful rock voices ever, in my opinion. Enjoy. Then Keith Emerson comes in on synthesizer. As mentioned below "Take a Pebble" is an excellent song to enjoy. Great piano by Emerson.
I was fortunate enough to have seen them live several times in the 70's. My favorite Prog Rock band: Keith Emerson ~ organs/synthesizers Greg Lake ~ guitar and vocals Karl Palmer ~ drums/percussion You need to check out the "Brain Salad Surgery" album. Then we moved to New Mexico and the musical journey continued. The 70's were a WHOLE different way to raise up children. Generous vibes everywhere. It was glorious. Books. Art. Dance. Music. Food. People talking to each other civilly with receptive interest yet able to reconcile and have our own opinions and it was always no harm, no foul. Easy to change the subject: "Did you catch the game?" "Bet I can skate faster than you!" "Wanna build a fort? We're gonna need shovels and axes..."

It's so nice to see ELP get some love recently from a variety of reactors. This was my favorite band during my high school and college days. But then, I'm a sucker for keyboards and Keith Emerson was a keyboard genius. I'm just now getting in to a lot of the classical music he wrote. It's simply beautiful. Karl Palmer was not a mere drummer, he was a percussionist. I have come to appreciate Greg Lake more now in my older years than I did way back when. Saw these guys in concert several times back in the 70's and it was always amazing.
Rachel Flowers covers Keith better than ANYBODY I know. She actually played Keith's Moog at his house for him. She is one of the most accomplished blind musicians I know. She played for THE Ray Charles when she was 9 years old in his home recording studio.
@@stanervin6108 She's excellent! She not only plays a lot of Keith's songs, she strives to play them note for note and succeeds more often than not. From Tarkus to Trilogy to one of his piano concertos she nails i. It's a heavy influence on her own style if you listen to her own compositions.
It's such a beautiful song. I love playing this on warm spring and summer days. When you're not in a rush to go anywhere, just slow down and play this in your car. This song inspires feelings of gratitude and happiness when I hear it.
1st Impression (Part 2) was played to death on the radio, back in the day. It's probably the least interesting section of the suite. The album Brain Salad Surgery is a complete work. It opens with a hymn, then goes into Alberto Ginestra's Toccata. This piece is a bit too much for normal people, but sets up the sense of fear and foreboding that sets up the "carnival of evil," yet to come.
Oh my Jamel, thank you for this ELP song. Always one of my favorites. Please try Still You Turn Me On Live, C'est La Vie and Take A Pebble. ELP is truly outstanding with Greg Lake's beautiful voice adding so much richness. Thanks for this.

That was the incomparable Keith Emerson on the Moog synthesizer and equally incomparable Greg Lake on vocals and guitar. RIP. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake...
ELP is one of my favorite prog rock bands. Before forming ELP, Greg Lake was the lead singer of another great prog rock band named King Crimson. You should listen to some King Crimson songs. My favorites are "21st Century Schizoid Man," "I Talk to the Wind," and "In the Court of the Crimson King."
Jamel did one or two KC songs but the have been blocked. I think "21st Century Schizoid Man" was one of those. I don't know if it's up on his patron page or not.
My favorite acoustic song! I felt accomplished when I finally learned how to play it. And you can't half-ass sing this one. You have to mean it. You have to go to a place and/or thought or memory to pull it off.
My wife has taught herself how to play guitar during the pandemic. She decided to learn this one! I do my best on the vocals. I'm getting there... She's practicing it right now, purely by coincidence.
Do you remember watching Edgar Winter Group doing "Frankenstein" and him going to a black machine with a bunch of knobs on it to make those futuristic sounds?" That's the kind of synthesizer Keith Emerson was using. I'm pretty sure that's the case. Stay safe friend...be well...
Well, they are both analog synthesizers, but they are not the same. Edgar Winter played a ARP 2600 and Keith Emerson plays a full Moog modular synthesizer.
I saw ELK in concert in Los Angeles as a teenager. Best concert EVER! Just one example: Out of kmowhere, the piano started rising into the air, and as Emerson continued to play a jazz-fusion number, the piano began to spin end over end, faster and faster. Incredible!!!
I love this song.Greg Lake. Emerson Lake and Palmer. Jamal. Two songs you must must listen too. Did you ever listen to "In The Court Of The Crimson King" by King Crimson??? Epic song. Also sung by Greg Lake. Another is Lucky Man by Emerson Lake and Palmer Please give a listen and response to that King Crimson song. I would be interested in your response I want a shirt that has what your shirt says on it.
Moog synth, acoustic piano, Hammond organ. Keith Emerson was one of the all time greats in history. Tragically, he ended his own life because he couldn’t play anymore. Greg Lake wrote these incredible acoustic songs. Those were the ones that got most radio-play. The first single off their first album was their biggest hit “Lucky Man.”
Oh yes sir that was a analogue synthesizer you know when you listen to some early hip-hop you'll hear a lot of analog synthesizer programs usually they use the high register of the frequencies but the key word operative word is analog forget about digital yeah yeah yeah digital is convenient easy-to-use user-friendly analog is the shit the only setback is nowadays those analog synthesizers come at me high price yeah every your head would spin if you found out the cost of some of these old classic synthesizers that's why it's so cool that Keith Emerson gave all his old analog synthesizers to that blind girl who could play all his music her name is Rachel flowers she is absolutely to Prodigy you know even Ray Charles when he was alive he went to see her when she was a little girl give her encouragement he was quite impressed by her talents and I used to check out those videos she did a concert and played one of Keith Emerson's really amazing works that he composed with the whole Orchestra and he did just passed away very recently at that time and while she was playing this really amazing composition of Keith Emerson's she broke down and cried it was a very touching moment alright surfer dude you're the man
I had this CD back in college. I noticed that the production sounded very similar to the Yes album Fragile. I checked the liner notes and, sure enough, they were recorded around the same time at the same studio.
Same production engineer too. You're right. I think each album was released within 8-9 months from each other., Fragile in November of 71 and Trilogy in July of 72.
You should react to their more keyboard heavy songs like Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression Part 2, Fanfare For The Common Man, Knife-Edge, Take A Pebble, Tank, Hoedown, Trilogy, and The Barbarian.

You need to hear that Range of his Greatness
J, that’s a Moog Synthesizer. Keith Emerson was one of the first rock musician to use it. It had just become available before recording the song.
I Love ELP, can't get enough of them. 🥰
Analog synthesizer, programmed by patch cables and pots (potentiometers, or as mentioned above knobs. LOL)
I saw ELK in concert in Los Angeles as a teenager. Best concert EVER! Just one example: Out of kmowhere, the piano started rising into the air, and as Emerson continued to play a jazz-fusion number, the piano began to spin end over end, faster and faster. Incredible!!!
Back in the day, headphones with this song cranked up to 11and joint. Life was good!
Definitely one of my favs..
🧡🔥❤️🌞.
Sweet! One of my all time favorites! So damn good.
I love this song.Greg Lake. Emerson Lake and Palmer.
Jamal. Two songs you must must listen too. Did you ever listen to "In The Court Of The Crimson King" by King Crimson??? Epic song. Also sung by Greg Lake.
Another is Lucky Man by Emerson Lake and Palmer
Please give a listen and response to that King Crimson song. I would be interested in your response
I want a shirt that has what your shirt says on it.
Awesome power group! ❤️❤️🙏🙏
Greg Lake had a voice that had a perfect tone and was so smooth. His guitar sound was was just as sweet.
The ending was Emerson on the Moog synthesizer. He was one of the pioneers of synths in rock music.
ELP was the shit back in the day, they could do it all acoustic, electric anything the most important part was probably Keith Emerson’s synthesizer
Moog synth, acoustic piano, Hammond organ. Keith Emerson was one of the all time
greats in history. Tragically, he ended his own life because he couldn’t play anymore.
Greg Lake wrote these incredible acoustic songs. Those were the ones that got most
radio-play. The first single off their first album was their biggest hit “Lucky Man.”
One of my favorite groups. Their guitar work is incredible
ELP is a major hole to fall down. Some of the best and most archetypical English prog rock out there.
Oh yes sir that was a analogue synthesizer you know when you listen to some early hip-hop you'll hear a lot of analog synthesizer programs usually they use the high register of the frequencies but the key word operative word is analog forget about digital yeah yeah yeah digital is convenient easy-to-use user-friendly analog is the shit the only setback is nowadays those analog synthesizers come at me high price yeah every your head would spin if you found out the cost of some of these old classic synthesizers that's why it's so cool that Keith Emerson gave all his old analog synthesizers to that blind girl who could play all his music her name is Rachel flowers she is absolutely to Prodigy you know even Ray Charles when he was alive he went to see her when she was a little girl give her encouragement he was quite impressed by her talents and I used to check out those videos she did a concert and played one of Keith Emerson's really amazing works that he composed with the whole Orchestra and he did just passed away very recently at that time and while she was playing this really amazing composition of Keith Emerson's she broke down and cried it was a very touching moment alright surfer dude you're the man
I've been waiting for this one. The first time I heard this I felt like I had been missing out on a secret.
One of my top ten songs, EVER!!!!!
My favorite ELP song
You should react to their more keyboard heavy songs like Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression Part 2, Fanfare For The Common Man, Knife-Edge, Take A Pebble, Tank, Hoedown, Trilogy, and The Barbarian.
The best part of the guitar work is during the verses when Greg switches from chord strumming to flat-picked arpeggios. So good.
Sounds like they used a synthesizer keyboard for that awesome sound mid-through to the end.
Oh my Google the pic of Keith's synth rig...worth it
