  • UPDATE Sep 2021: COVID-19 happened and electric scooters are more popular than ever in NYC. With less cars, people, and buses on the road since 2019 electric scooters really solve the last-mile mobility problem quite well.
Between the strained subway system and ride-sharing apps, is there a better way to get around the city? I've been using the Xiaomi M365 electric scooter in the past month and do a quick review on if it's right for you in New York City

A toy for kids🤷🏿‍♂️. Well, so are cars , airplanes, trucks and bikes. Just like they have bikes and cars for kids, they have scooters for kids and scooters for adults. Its new, so some people think scooters are for kids. They have no idea of what they miss out on🙂. Personally, i think adults on scooters are very practical and not trying to look “cool”, they are just focused on getting around the most affordable, sometimes quickest and least stressful (fun) way.

Would you say you could ride these in nyc to school during the winter months when it is really cold. Like ovbiosly not in snow or rain but just if it’s cold and windy?

I will try when it's cold here, only have had it for a month or two!

I have ridden in the City in cold weather. It's not too bad if you don't have 8+ miles to go and it is not very windy.
Do bundle up really well. Especially on the hands. Wind chill at speed can be brutal. Especially if the temps are below 20 degrees.
Rain is still doable but you need to really take it easy and be careful. Especially if your scooter has solid tires. They tend to slip and slide allot. A drizzle or very light rain might be manageable, but I wouldn't scoot in anything heavier, and not for long distances. (I'd also be concerned about water damaging the electronics.)
Snow is pretty much a no go.

@@DocMicrowave I just got mine two days ago and it's awesome for the city but I expect to take the train for most of my commutes when the weather gets worse or if I have to go pretty long distances.

@@eddyshasha1996 I hear you. Where I live I am too far to walk to the subway (~6 miles). I would normally have to take a bus to the train. An extra 40mins of travel.
In winter ( if the weather is not bad, extremely cold, or lots of snow still on the ground) I would normally ride my scooter to the subway and back. Also ride from the subway to the office. Another half a mile.
Basically I use the scooter for that "last mile of commute" scenario.
Scooting to the subway took ~25 minutes on my Glion Dolly. About 20 minutes on my folding ebike. And close to 15 on my main ebike. Thought I don't ride that to the subway anymore because it is too big and cumbersome on a crowded subway car.
That leaves my new Apollo scooter. Haven't official timed it yet but I am guessing it will come in between 15~20 minutes for the same 6 miles.

definitely I've had my scooter for years now and use it in the winter. Just need to cover up, I mostly try using thermal bottoms.

If they aren't yet, it is not enforced.
That said, there has been more than a few ticked off politicians calling for crack-downs and restrictions because you have yahoos recklessly hot rodding down crowded sidewalks and not yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks.
If things continue as they are, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a move to fully register E-Scooters as motor vehicles requiring inspections and licenses, and all the fees that go with.
