Birds of northern South Africa part 1

- Опубликовано: 18 фев 2017
- Around 150 of the most common birds of the northern provinces of south Africa have been recorded during the month of December (South African summer). Mostly during road side birding (using the car as birdhide) in natural reserves and NP's. Since more than 900 species have been recorded in South Africa, this is only a very small sample of the more common species! Labelling to the best of our knowledge. Part 1 and 2 shot in Dino Keng NR, the Rietvlei NR, the Groenkloof university campus, the Pretoria botanical gardens and Austin Roberts Bird sanctuary.
Part 3 and 4 during a weekend in Kruger NP.
At 4:42 the Spotted Dikkop segment with the baby being shielded by its mother at about 4:53 is absolutely precious!
I can’t believe it took me so long to find your videos, but thank heavens I did. I have been watching African live cams for several years and there have been so many birds (and bird calls) that I have wondered about. I happen to think that you are some sort of genius for creating this series. I love it so much. Thank you
Thank you for your kind words.
We are more than happy to be able to share the excitement we feel looking at the beauty of nature!

Beautifully presented. Lovely positioning of the camera. Great the way it all ties together. Quite extraordinary. My in-laws are avid birdwatchers. They are from South Africa and caught the bug there. I have been interviewing them - many many stories. The latest was their experience bird watching. They are in their 90s now. So I decided to look up South African birds and found your videos. You brought it all to life! Thank you!
Whenever I am homesick, I put on your videos and just listen to these birds, and everything feels fine again. Thank you.

The diversity of birds is amazing! Great video. It is extremely useful and educational to have bird names embedded in the movie.
These are such beautiful videos and I'm sure glad I found them. So, so evocative of my homeland. I miss you so much!

Beautiful birds!! Love watching this!!
What a wonderful piece of work. Thank you so much.
I shall use this as Revision before our next Trip to Sub-Saharan Africa.
Ee sha thanks. I haven't checked or heard these birds in twenty years makes me homesick. Thanks for that.
Wonderful. Peace and free. Thanks God.
This is excellent. I hope someone freed the collared sunbird from the car mirror.
Guy I love your videos, nice relaxed pace and well edited. I think you will find that the Common Sandpiper is actually a Wood Sandpiper. My wife and I particularly enjoyed your series on Costa Rica where we are off to this coming December, (2017). We wish you and your wife many more years of happy travels and look forward to more of your videos.

Beautiful video friend.Great footage. Thanks for sharing this.
Indeed this is great movie of some wildlife. I like birds too. Because Birds are Gems of Mother Nature. They are available in different colors in our nature. Awesome footage Guy Marchal. Waiting for your new uploads.
Hadidas waking me from my deep siesta, someone is coming for sure. They've walked far by foot on the dusty road. I will get dressed and meet them, make them welcome and offer them all I have. Yes all I have. I will show them the life I left far behind and let them hear this distant song. The sunlight on water that ripples, the turtle dove that coos, hand in hand with a lover that would never be.
Pragtig, BAIE dankie
This is priceless work.
thank you

First of all, thanks so much for doing this! We are headed to Zambia later this year, and your series helps immensely in preparing to learn the birds in a region that is new to me. One suggestion would be to wait a short while in the video before the name of the bird appears. I learn more by having to work out the identification on my own, once the name is on the screen I can't "unsee" it. If I may, there are a few of the identifications that might need to be revised. I will let you contact me privately if you would like to discuss further. Again, many thanks.
hello Jack,
I can imagine that our identification is not always correct, we call it: to the best of our knowledge. If you have suggestions, you are more than welcome to post them! you can contact me.
Thanks Guy! My email is jstephens62@comcast.net
At 12:08 it's a Wood Sandpiper. Great video!
The first "guy" is hilarious 🤣
Wowww beautiful
Nice filming 📹👌 interesting to watch them👍🐦
MAGNIFIQUE
Fantastic....thank you for sharing 😀
thank you
Thank you!
At 12:01, the shorebird is teetering like a Common Sandpiper. However the upperparts are gray rather than brown with white fringing on the feathers and a banded tail. The upper leg is relatively long, and the leg color is green-gray rather than yellow-gray. I think it is a better fit for Common Greenshank.
I agree that is a common Green Shank
The Common Sandpiper has a conspicuous white shoulder bar with shorter neck and legs (in relation to the size of its own body), while the bird at 12:01 doesn't. However, with the pattern (obvious six or five spots or stripes) on the primaries and tail, the bird at 12:01 looks more like a Wood Sandpiper for me.
Great!!!
Awesome video 👏

Спасибо за видео . Потрясающе интересно ...
Amazing
What is the bird calling in the background from 11:24, when the Cape Teal is onscreen? I’ve heard it in so many wildlife documentaries but don’t know what it is!
there are many different birds calling, which call you refer to ? the one right on 11:24?
It’s the Cape Turtle Dove - I found it (eventually) in another video, but thank you for replying :)
Came here for this - thank you!
Nothing short of spectacular! Thanks for sharing and for those who don't know, the males are the attractive ones, ol:)
Great videos. I'm so envious! What equipment do you use for the filming?
What I use is a Sony FDR-AX53 4K consumer camera with a 20X optical zoom, fitted with an old Sony teleconversion lens VCL-HG2037Y factor 2X.
I record moving scenes preferentially in FHD at 50P.
I only us 4K 25P recording for long distance shots without too much motion.
This allows me to crop later on during editing achieving around 1600mm equivalent without loosing FHD resolution. I render in XAVC S which provides much better quality than XAVC. Recording for both formats at 100 megabit sec to minimise artefacts.a 4K 50P camera
Always Grt nature in Africa
Thank you
When you show the cape teal, what is the bird with the rhythmic song on one note in the background? It is in every video of African wildlife, but is never identified.
can't help you! some expert viewers?
0:26 and 0:32, between the hadida sounds, there is a bird that makes a 3-syllable sound, almost like a xylophone/wooden flute ? Does ANYONE know what it might be? We hear it a lot in Gauteng..
Werner Barnard Miight be the bokmakierie but I’m not sure, has been a while since I was in SA
Thank you I'm not the only one that heard that bird call:) pretty sure I heard it in my garden the other day also want to know :)
Did you ever find out what it was? I listened to the Bokmakierie, but it isn't that. I have been searching for ages, but can't find the name of the bird.
Southern Boubou, calls vary, male start with one of several whistled notes followed by synchronised whistle response from female.
Hope you one day get to do the birds of the cape and eastern provinces.
Hi, does anyone know the bird that one can hear at the beginning of the video while the Hadida is calling?
Black-headed Oriole
Wonderful video thanks but could you please tell us each Bird s name thanks
The very first video with the hadidas there was another bird call in the background any idea what it was? :) very interesting birs call!
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU FOUND OUT WHAT IT WAS!
black headed oriole. some birds however have a less elaborated call. you can find some nice examples on the internet. ruclips.net/video/5kK_-9rCXSE/видео.html
I loved the permanence of the original audio.
Give the list of the name please ...
A natureza é magnífica de linda e perfeita, se o homem se consientisar disso nois teremos um futuro melhor

Great video. Thanks... can I ask what equipment do you use? I struggled to get focus on birds in Costa Rica this year but you seem to have had no trouble. Thanks!

subhan Allah great vid.
This is beautifully filmed. Can you please tell me what bird is @11:31? I watched and re-watched and no caption. It’s the black water bird that shelters or mantles the water in a wide sweep of its wings. Thank you so much!
thanks, this is a Black Egret
@@guymarchal8660 Thanks so much for the response! I found that behavior quite interesting. 😀
Hi, Awesome collection. Just want to know which camera and lens u used for these captures?
wow!!!
Großartig!
Lovely video!
To be honest i spent more time scanning the video for the names of the birds than looking at the birds!
This in my opinion is because the "bird description" is the "wrong colour" in the shot, making it virtually Impossible to see!
On the Positive side i watched the video several times over to find the descriptions!🤗
Thanks for posting🐾🐾
I agree, the names are sometimes difficult to read in my first video's.
today I added a black outline and put them on a more uniform darker background if available in the picture.
The small size is a compromize I made, since not all viewers are interested in bird identification.
@@guymarchal8660 Hi, Thank you!🕊
Lekker dag😉

Love it, but even more names please!

Like 258, very good video. Done, you have a new supporter. Mutual supporter
Brilliant video!
4:53 I think you guys scared the dikkops. Right after the flash pops, the mother dikkop gets into protective position, and this is why I don't like using flash when shooting bird photos...
Poor baby
11:30 what bird is purring in the background?
no idea, hopefully some expert can help us (me)
make a video about kinds of wild chickens please
Hi I have been struggling to identify the call of the hidden bird at the background right at the start of the video showing the Hadeda Ibis. Any help please?
black headed oriole. some birds however have a less elaborated call. you can find some nice examples on the internet. ruclips.net/video/5kK_-9rCXSE/видео.html
Pretty sure that's a Southern Boubou, if you mean the whistling call at 0:26
No hornbills?
Hey! How is the weather in Africa?
It's Hot or cold on February & March
February is rainy but not cold. Temperatures about 20 degrees Celsius
@@saramoyo4807 ...WOW...i wish i could move to Africa if the weather is not too cold
@@BabyBBB01 lol. Africa never gets too cold. You would have frosty winter mornings but you are guarenteed sunsine everyday!
@@saramoyo4807 No, not EVERY day. The rainy season in west Africa can be overcast for days at a time. Remember, Africa is a CONtinent and is VERY LARGE so don't make sweeping generalizations like that.
Three places in Africa see snow on a regular basis: Atlas mountains in Morocco, peaks in Kenya and Tanzania (Mt. Kilamanjaro), and the Drakensberg of South Africa.
depends on where you are and the season of the year. Africa is VERY LARGE!
Hi. Great video. I like that you give us a chance to try and identify the birds ourselves before you put up the caption with the species name. I'm pretty sure your 'Common Sandpiper' is actually a Wood Sandpiper - the jizz and colouration are all wrong for Common and the bill is too short and straight for Greenshank (as one of your other commenters suggested)
hello,
I am sure ,this is not the only mistake I made! I am not an expert . Identification to the best of our knowledge!
That's okay - waders (aka shorebirds) can be pretty tricky@@guymarchal8660
Who know the chirping of that bird in which start at 11:23??which is dominant in 30 and 31?
One of the birds in the background is the cape turtle dove
@@danielhudon9456 thank you Daniel. I have been searching in vain for the name of that bird. I appreciate you sir. 🙏
@@MartinWakibe You're welcome, Martin. I went to the video looking for the name of that bird, apparently now known as the ring-necked dove, and found its name in another comment, so I'm happy to return the favor! All the best to you.
Supet
was that collared sunbird stuck in the mirror?
No, it was fighting its image in the mirror.
👌🌷👌🌷👌
What a pleasure to have found these while I sit here in lockdown in NZ. Makes me miss the bush so much. Thank you.
Thank you very much. May I have name of first bird, thanks
hadeda Ibis. my pleasure
Guy Marchal I can hear this sound almost every day sometimes. Finally I got its name, thank you very much
