- Ah, France. The country of decadent cuisine, fine art and fashion, and the shining example of European democracy. At least, that’s what France in the American imagination looks like. In reality, France’s sterling image neglects its history of colonial violence, never-ending religious repression of Muslims, and racist political rhetoric, on the left and right. In this episode of “Backspace,” host Sana Saeed explores the pitfalls of romanticizing France and suggests how Western media can do a better job framing the country in the context of its inconsistent values and colonial past.

@margaretgreenwood4243 I agree. This issue has never been before but suddenly now. I think europe has gone through the enlighten era where it separates itself from religion.
One law for everyone might be controversial, but people have to understand that religion should be in the heart, temple, and home of a person, not on the state of governance.

The worst thing is that most of those who migrate are some the best workers I've ever met. The problem often comes from their kids who font want to integrate.
They need to be way tougher on the Muslim radicals.
Muslim radicals are suicidal, it’s not possible to be tough on them. just have to be nice and keep a close eye.
It should be noted, the french understanding of Secularité is different from the U.S or UK definition; the french definition of secularism means ‘freedom FROM religion’- NOT ‘freedom OF religion’ as is the case in the UK and U.S…
Freedom from religion means the state has the responsibility to ensure that religion doesn’t play a major role in public life; this is why they did the burqa ban, because religious clothing in public goes against french secularité…
Exactly. However, I do believe that it was a faux-pas to forbid head scarves in schools when they did. I understand why they did but it could have been done differently or at another time. If I was a teenage girl in a school when that law was made, I would have been wearing a headscarf until I couldn't stand it anymore. I'm not Muslim, but it would have been just too tempting.
Well put!
In the U.S. we are supposed to have both freedom FROM religion *and* OF religion. Our policies don't always reflect this, but we should be able to be as religious or as unreligious as we want. And the ban makes no sense to me because it's a piece of clothing. It doesn't affect anyone else. Are there no nuns in France? Are people not allowed to wear crosses in public? How is that freedom from anything?
@@whitflores8160 You would have to understand the history of France to understand why they are not into overtly religious symbolism.
@@whitflores8160 You cannot look at France with the same eyes that you look at the US. US society is a racist society, intolerant of people that are non-white, non-christian. France is a country that has recently become focused on radicalised Islamic movements in France because of attacks and threats. Before that, the whole head scarf thing came about because of french liacity.... i.e. no religion as politics or social measure. So everyone is free to follow whatever religion, but not free to impose it on others.
There have been incidents in France where Muslim parents have been 'offended' by the mention of Christmas in schools. Christmas in France is not a religious event, not since the Revolution. It is a cultural event. To some French people it is a religious event. Remember that France's culture is originally Judeo-Christian so there are many cultural social events and activities tied to that.
When Muslim leaders demand that the cultural events be taken out of the calendar of France, it will cause problems. It had nothing to do with religion, but an 'attack' on culture.
How would Americans feel if some group living in the US, that had been there for decades (there have been Muslims in France for a very long time and nobody had a problem with any cultural differences until recently) and that was very much a part of the society, suddenly declared that they were offended by the Fourth of July? would Americans remove the festivities of that day?
As I said, it is impossible for Americans to understand what goes one with cultural differences in France. There has been a right-wing movement in France for a couple of decades that is doing its best to create a 'hatred of the other' and it seems to be working, unfortunately.
Personally, I think banning headscarves in schools was a bad idea, simply because when dealing with teenagers, bans usually accomplish the opposite.
However, I have a friend who worked in elementary schools and she saw little girls, under 12, getting beaten up by their brothers (who brought them to school), if they had let their headscarf slip or were showing too much hair. So, perhaps the idea of the headscarf being used to oppress girls and women, might also be a problem.
It is a lot more complicated than 'racism' or 'intolerance'. There are girls who wear a headscarf because they have to and there are girls who wear a headscarf because they want to. None of these girls have to wear a headscarf based on the Quran. It is a social thing, not a religious one.
How about you preach to your muslim friend in Middle East to stop oppressing non-muslim first? Then you can talk about equality
I live in the Middle East, what oppression are you talking about moronhead?
Christians in the middle east going extinct..
So muslims that live (some because they come here, others because they were born & raised here) in the West are guilty of what Middle East countries do?
🤨
Are you guilty too of what people of your own faith do in other parts of the world, or that can only be applied to muslims?
There’s nothing wrong here the problem with these religious beliefs is that they always want to impose and make other people believe and accept their beliefs.
For example if someone visits a Muslim country they are supposed to abide by Muslim rules and not try and tell the Muslim community that I will not do this because I’m not Muslim.
Same as when Muslims visit Christian countries and non Muslim countries, they can’t impose their beliefs and dictate that non Muslim country. You can’t tell a local school in France 🇫🇷 to stop serving pork because your son or daughter goes to that school.
They must adjust to the culture there.
Same as for Christian as well.
A Muslim family praying as many times a day in France as it wants doesn't affect you in the slightest. European Muslims are no more trying to "impose" their religion on you than Christians are trying to in Iraq or Syria.

These are just some of the things that come along for the ride with that nice Muslim family down the road. Islam is by its nature an expansionist religion, many of the concepts in its are designed to ensure the spread of Islam. Regardless of the points in this video I find understandable there's a glaring elephant in the room this video just won't acknowledge. The fact that many Muslims are too damn socially conservatives and antisemitic and how those factors naturally creates distrust in liberal socities. At a certain point for all these criticisms many Muslims should look in the mirror and honesty ask themselves why many liberal minded people (I'm not talking about xenophobic racists) don't like Islam philosophically. Luckily I do see some comments from Muslims here which do acknowledge that.
@claydogg234 Looking at the mirror and having 2nd hand embarrassment already. A true Muslim is a conservative person. Quran actively encourages that. That simply doesn’t work with liberal societies.

@@claydogg234 People don't get upset that they hold such beliefs. Why should I care that they have detailed descriptions of eternal suffering, it's not my religion and I don't believe it's true so not my problem, right ... but no - it's that they want to impose their beliefs on others, in many ways. In fact it seems to be their purpose as m*slims to find any way to exert their will on other people and either make them and their country isl*mic, or drive them out of the country by various passive aggressive means. The 'Cry bully' tactic is very popular and effective (just listen to a few minutes of the video, it's ridiculous stuff); or migrating to countries and telling the people there they have no right to the land they are on, but then insisting they have a right to be there and act like they are the owners because all land belongs to All*h. It'd be a comedy show if they weren't insistent and often back it up with violence.
As a Dutch man in France, Bourgogne and Paris, I can say that the problem is far more complex and has only so much to do with history but more with everyday life in cities and fear of change in the countryside that is mainly driven by ignorance. In Paris we have two extremes, open well educated and well integrated and therefore moderate Muslim North Africans and low educated secluded Muslim North Africans that have no business mixing with non Muslims since the French lifestyle and social norms and values are haram. It's like mixing oil and water. Parallel there is a group of mostly young North African men that don't have a legal status and have to live either in undocumented jobs or on the street trying to make a daily living with illegal activities. The first group is more or less invisible the latter though is extremely visible and is building up a frustration in the rest of the population although these young men don't have another choice most of the time. I would like to see more effort going into education of the last two groups and a smarter French/EU immigration policy, it might be able to create more unity. There are also many immigrants from all over the world including sub Sahara Africans but we don't see the same problems there.
Ok yeah, just one little precision : you speak of two extremes, but most "muslims" are situated in the middle (and probably closer to that extrême of open, integrated, "educated") and the radicalisation of many of the people from the 1st of your 2 problematic groups has been in my opinion done by decades of stigmatisation and marginalisation. The retreat of public services in the banlieues, the constant présence of hostile police forces who experiment more and more aggressive technics on those populations, and the recurrent use of the hijab by french politicians to counter scandals in government ie. les contre-feux.
So education is always good (particularly for french society at large to re-acquaint itself with our laïque values, which are that, religious expressions as long as it doesn't threaten public order is guaranteed by the state) but I'm not sure it is enough here...
@@johannasegard737 What I meant is that when you live in Paris you go for a cup of coffee or shopping or a glass of wine or a dinner, you meet people from all kinds of backgrounds and when you have a conversation it doesn't really matter where they are coming from or what they believe. But if you have a hostile attitude towards other people because of different backgrounds it's impossible to create unity in a society. Personally I am not religious but as far as I understand all religions are advocating that everything is connected, all is part of each other, even science agrees with that. So if anything in a certain religion is meant to divide people than hopefully more knowledge through education might moderate these hostile attitudes. I think it would be better to increase the educational efforts in the Banlieues and give young people a better access to a successful life than sending more police. To give this a chance you need the help of the communities in these area's and the acknowledgement of the problems and it's solutions by the whole of the population and the political spectrum. It's like waking up to the present facts and it's future consequences and make a collective U turn.
The middle you are talking about is the French Muslims that are pretty much religious but keep it for themselves and mostly interact in their intimate life with other Muslims but on a day to day base respectfully with everybody else. They don't drink alcohol, they are not openly gay, they don't eat porc, they don't have romantic relationships with non Muslims but that's nothing against others. They respect non Muslims have a different idea about these things so there is tolerance. The very first group the open well educated Muslims put their Muslim background on a less important level and are philosophically more connected to for instance Albert Camus. And have a less rigorous explanation of Islam. This group fully integrates in the French traditions. Now I originally come from Rotterdam. We have the best mayor of the world (officially). He was born in Morocco and he is a Muslim like the middle group. Although I don't think he would be against mixed marriage. This guy took every chance the Netherlands was offering him to become the best he can be.
He said after some riots with 2nd or 3rd generation Moroccan youth in Rotterdam that if they are not appreciating the Dutch norms and values towards society and towards women in particularly, they better pack their bags and find a place of their liking elsewhere. That was not against Muslims, that was against scum hiding behind "being" Muslim.
From our perspective we also see non-Muslims as Middle Class educated and tolerant, they tend to be friendly and inclusive. Then you have the poor rungs of society of non Muslims, they harbour a lot of hate in their heart because they are poor and have no potential for upward mobility. Then you have the outright anti Muslim activists that make it their duty to ponce money off of big donors and antagonise muslims.
Generally speaking, most Muslims want to be integrated in the Middle-CLass camp, but they often have to start from ground 0 on social housing programs with the lower rungs. Countless victims from the Muslim community due to going to school and mixing with the lower rungs. What we are seeing in the UK is upward mobility of Muslims now where a stable middle class is being created, and Muslim middle-class ghettos are forming.
@@strictlyyoutube6881 I agree that anybody with a limited education is more vulnerable for xenophobia. Going to school with lower rungs and forming ghettos should be avoided by active policy of spreading different social populations. Government housing mixed within the free market housing to guarantee the level of schooling in the neighborhood and promote mixing of different ethnic groups and social classes to ensure mutual integration.
@@joostandhisband9648 That's what they are currently doing in the UK. New developments will only be accepted if 10-20% of the units are for social housing. The Government figured out building huge social housing projects was a social experiment disaster. We will only know how well this housing strategy works in the next 10-20 years when the children and teenagers who now live on those developments turn out. Not sure how it is in the EU, I'm sure it is similar as Racism is the first boss to defeat, the second is class. It goes without saying anyone not white is defacto not upper class, you have to almost outrightly prove you are middle class as a non white.

Islam doesn't have a radical side. France never minded it's own business, they went to a different country aka Algeria, told them this is part of France and here's a list of demands for u lot to become French. Nobody consulted the Algerians whether they want France to colonise their country
Exactly. I think a lot of people here are commenting from the American and somewhat British mentality of how their country is a country for everybody and you nad your identity come first, then your citizenship and what that means. France is not that way, French people don't buy the "hyphenated" identity most people in say the US sustain. And that's okay. Different nations are built differently and in their own right. Regardless of what you may say these people chose to go to France rather than a different country, and no matter what they're facing now their lives are better off than had they stayed in their motherlands. People know that France puts law, secularity, and its own culture before everything else if you're French. It's not a melting pot because it's not a nation of immigrants.

And if someone destroyed your home , you went to their house tell them you ruined my place of living then you must leave me a space in your house ,then he says no , what would do , would you just say it's his rules then I shall respect it ??? And no one forced me????? Destgusting double standards. The most funny thing I've heard today is that France is JUST chilling.
You can't use the same tactics like in USA because French are indigenous in Europe. You can't bully them to embrace your rules. Don't like it? You can always go back to Lebanon, Algeria, Syria or Iraq.
maybe the islamist channels can show how the ottomans and their islanic allies are coping with their imperialistic heritage...
Not many indigenous Europeans remain… Basques and Sami are some… modern French are descended from Celts, who came later as part of the Indo-European waves of migration. The USA wiped out most of its indigenous population to craft its narrative of a perfect melting pot… and that has been a few centuries. France is much older - if you go back far enough any European country’s history, one will find that said history is replete with stories of migration, colonialism, and eventual cultural integration to the point where the new mixed populace forgets its mixed to begin with.
@@gaf407 The basques are not Indigenous either, they just have like 5% more "indigenous" European DNA but then those "indigenous" Europeans were not Indigenous originally either since they also replaced other people. As a French person who lived in China and Morocco for several years, I do not accept this comparison made between policies in France and forced labor camps in Xinjiang or whatever the Chinese communist party does. French Muslims are certainly disenfranchised but at least they are represented in media (fiction and non fiction) as well as the government. They are not denied basic existence and the history of colonisation and issues such as institutionalised racism are widely talked about in mainstream media. Also, Charlie Hebdo is not a racist newspaper. It is sometimes distasteful but not racist, it's actually the epitome of far left whilst being highly satirical at the same time.

Forced labour camps is indeed one of the worst kind of persecution of muslims, so dont be proud that the French racists actions against muslims isn't totally comparable with Chinese persecution of muslims. But compare British, Dutch, Belgian treatment of muslims with France's racist policies against muslims and you clearly see how dirty they are with muslims

Ohhhh. So renouncing Islam was necessary to being fully French. This explains so much. Now, wearing modest dress is seen _as a refutation of being French,_ not simply women practicing their own faith.
Not renouncing but criticizing the problematic texts in the Quran & the Hadith , that is required.
@Orbite Flow no. 5 of chapter 9 of the Quran which commands to kill polytheists.
"But, once the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them on every way. But if they repent, perform prayers, and pay alms-tax, then sent them free. Indeed, Allah(God) is all-forgiving, most merciful."
Verse (4:24)
And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess. [This is] the decree of Allah upon you
There are many more. But I dont have the time
@Orbite Flow Well if u read the Quran , its quite random with its placement of verses.
Now Islam apologists will say that it is only meant for that time because there was animosity between the various groups.
But the fact remains that (if u actually believe in the religion) the Quran is not only valid for that time but for eternity.
Ofcourse if u know that all religions are man made then its not a problem. But there are many that believe that Quran is actually from God. That makes the Quran & the Hadiths very problematic.
@Orbite Flow Ofcourse i am not saying every muslim is like that.
Most muslim are far better than what the Quran asks them to be.
But until moderate muslims openly talk of reforms & say that there are issues in the Quran; there will be issues within the community & with other communities.
Also most Muslims become very defensive ( which to some extent is understandable) when others criticize things in the religion, because of this the people of other religions get swayed by the talking points of the far right.
Ofcourse the far right has 0 intentions to solve any issues they just want to propagate hate.

Thank you for this video. It is very important to provide an alternate narrative about this issue. It is good to point out that France's relentless pursuit of "secularism" is actually privileging certain groups at the expense of others. This comment section has talked a lot about the importance of integration, but there is nothing wrong with Arab culture coming to France and cross pollinating with French culture. The problem comes when you have alienation between communities, violence, prejudice and structural inequality. Personally I think it is very important to have more understanding between groups.

What I don’t understand is, I go to Algeria and Morocco and the Muslims there are mostly moderate and very understanding, but, the Muslims in France and other European countries are hardcore fundamentals. It boggles my mind - I can’t comprehend the situation. 😕
What you see is the culture shock of migrants who are only in the EU for economic gain and don’t see themselves or wish to assimilate to their host culture. The secularism and audacity of being publicly blasphemous or indecency (by their standard) causes many Muslims to become detached from the rest of society. Resulting in self-segregation of Muslims with children who have no connections to their parents homeland since they didn’t grow up there or their current home where they can’t interact with the local culture. An entire generation of migrants or their kids grow up with no sense of belonging then become easy pray for recruitment for radical groups. The problem is when you have people in schools who legit try to convert you to islam while being students or if they are adults the openly show the religion when that is against the law for all religions.
Why is this woman trying to tell us how French people should be in their own country 😂😂
To get a sense how the French viewed (and still view) the people, culture and heritage of the Algerians, look at Le Corbusier's plan for Algiers. In this city re-envisioning, the old sections were torn down and replaced with literal walls of buildings, and the ancient Kasbah Quarter was to be segregated by these structures. We in the US see France as appreciative of art and culture, but there is a brutal and oppressive side of French society that has facets of totalitarianism and cultural oppression. It is note worthy to point out that the city plan for Pyongyang was modeled after Le Corbusier's work.
He had a similar plan for Paris though, thank God no one let him go through with these plans
except one he was Swiss, two he had the exact same plan for Paris
Le Corbusier never saw a beautiful city that he thought shouldn't be ripped up, a true nightmare of a man.
@@cmbeadle2228 Le Corbusier is studied in architectural universities and it's not about "beauty", but okay you associate him with nightmare thoughts. Why?
@@cmbeadle2228 I highly agree and respectfully disagree with you, Le Corbusier was a pioneer in modern stuff, which I find ugly and I am not alone. But he also put more light in rooms, roof tops to be used as gardens to use less space, reduced construction time, etc. And he did a few more beautiful (in my opinion) houses earlier in his career, until 1914.
Latin americans, blacks, gypsis, asians and other groups suffer discrimination in Europe, and we never heard of any of these commiting acts of terrorism. There is obviously a religion/cultural factor playing a major role in this matter, and we just can't deny it.

When for one religion there religious book becomes more important than the laws of the land what would you expect from that people. They should abide by the law of the country to which they migrated or they should have stayed in their own land where oppression is daily phenemenon.
The laws of the land is never perfect, and often can be devastating to society. Just look at colonial history.
What you are forgetting is that even those who stay in their native countries are impacted by the finacial economic suppression and sanctions.
One example of where Islam and the west conflict is the global use of fiat currency and Intrest. This is because God has forbidden trading something that has no actual value and usury (interest). Therefore the use of fiat currency is forbidden. In an attempt to gain economic freedom from banks and to seek fair trade both Libya and Iraq tried to transition into only selling their oil for gold and other precious metals. They both were immediately invaded by wester powers for challenging the current global economic system, a major reason certain countries stay rich while others remain poor and in need.

Agree with a lot of comments as a muslim I say especially people from the sub continent asians and arab countries to interact with other cultures than their own. They dont like interacting they stick to their own that is why there is segregation and islamaphobia, we should mix with all cultures to understand how the other half lives and respect the laws of that country whether you like them or not, if you dont then leave, simple!. We should not be imposing our beliefs on others, but at the same time the country's we live in need to let us practice our way of live whether culturally or religiously. We need to win respect if we give the same respect back. Why is there so much islamaphobia? We bring these things upon ourselves . I am sorry to say but we as muslims dont have any unity between ourselves and we blame others. In the Quran in Surah Jumma it clearly states after the prayer go and disperse through the lands, interact with others seek the bounties of your Lord.
Throughout history, the French have been known for their aggressive imperialist and colonialist tendencies. From the 16th to the 20th century, France has colonized numerous territories around the world, including parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. The French used their military power and economic influence to gain control over these territories, often exploiting the resources and people for their own benefit. This ruthless pursuit of power and expansion resulted in numerous war crimes and atrocities committed by the French. One of the most infamous examples is the brutal treatment of the people of Algeria during the Algerian War of Independence. The French military used torture, mass killings, and forced displacement of civilians in an attempt to suppress the Algerian independence movement. This disregard for human rights and dignity is a clear demonstration of the French's ruthless and inhumane approach to colonialism and imperialism.
Furthermore, the French also carried out brutal and exploitative policies in their colonies, such as forced labor and land seizures, which had devastating effects on the local populations. In Vietnam, the French imposed heavy taxes and forced the local people to work in plantations and mines, leading to widespread poverty and suffering. The French also actively suppressed any resistance or uprisings from the colonized people, often resorting to violent methods to maintain their control.
Even after the end of colonial rule, the French have continued to perpetrate war crimes and human rights violations in their former colonies. In the 1990s, France supported the Hutu-led government in Rwanda, despite knowing about the planned genocide against the Tutsi minority. This complicity in the genocide resulted in the deaths of over 800,000 people and has left a lasting scar on the relationship between France and Rwanda.
The French have also been accused of committing war crimes during their intervention in the civil war in the Central African Republic in 2013. French soldiers have been accused of sexually abusing children and killing civilians, leading to calls for an investigation into these allegations. These incidents highlight the ongoing issues of French military intervention and their disregard for the rights and well-being of the people in the countries they colonized.
It is clear that French imperialism, colonialism, and their resulting war crimes have had long-lasting and devastating effects on the countries and people they have exploited. It is time for the French to acknowledge and take responsibility for their actions and learn from the mistakes of their past. Instead of glorifying their colonial history, they should work towards reparations and reconciliation with the countries they have harmed. Only then can the French truly move towards a more just and equitable relationship with their former colonies and the world at large.
all countries should do this France and ironically enough turkey as well I doubt we will get lecture about there history from you though....
Even though this video is well-prepared in research, I think it misses or misrepresents very pivotal points in discussion:
1- It's true how France has a violent history in Northern Africa, but it's unsatisfactory to discuss it without including the history of French suffering from North African navy power under the Ottoman empire before French Colonialism.
2- It is not very wise to compare France with the USA in terms of immigrants' approach. The USA was built under the notion of accommodating immigrants, whereas France was not. What is happening in France could be explained through the term "Reverse Colonisation" effect, where the previous colony latches itself to the coloniser.
3- France is not discriminating based on religion against Muslims. But the problem is that Islam (and I speak as a former Muslim here) is not integrable with Liberal Law. Islam requires that it is in a position of power, and this collides with the liberal principle of separation of religion and state. Yes, France has religious freedom, but it has every right to reform Islam. You can't give freedom to ideologies that think freedom should be restricted. That's self-sabotage.
4- Stigmatisation of immigration is not something unique to France. Of course, if someone said an immigrant in French society, we all know who is meant. But that's simply a matter of proportions. In the USA, whenever someone says immigrant, most people will think of Mexico. And we can we how the term shifts as the immigrants themselves diversify or change ethnicity completely. Decades ago, immigrant in Britain almost exclusively meant Indian/Pakistani. Today this notion is not true and the reason is that immigration into Britain changed.
5- Calling Charlie Hebdo racist is a flagrant mistake if not dishonest, even. Charlie Hebdo mocks everybody and targets no one particularly. What they are doing is free speech, if a particular group don't like that feature in French living, it was probably a mistake come here in the first place. If we start drawing red lines around what people feel strongly about, then free speech is dead.
👏Bien que je ne sois pas Français, I appreciate the impartial approach you took in posing your argument, Bravo.
Thank you,l pretty much what i was thinking. Especially Point 3 is very delicate, but very very true. Only one institution can hold the power
