How the U.S. Media Betrayed Afghanistan

  • The war in Afghanistan may be officially over, but there’s still the U.S. legacy to be reckoned with. When we look at how the U.S. media has covered Afghanistan over 20 years, especially during the moment of withdrawal, we find that there is the persistent idea that the U.S. - and the media itself - is still a sort of savior, trying to save Afghanistan from itself, from its people, from its men. In this episode of “Backspace,” host Sana Saeed looks at what covering Afghanistan has looked like and how it could be done better.

    • @AnonymousReader-er4eg
      @AnonymousReader-er4eg 2 года назад +9

      Yes, and it's sad because most Afghans are rural today still! And most of them hate the US as much as they hated the USSR (which killed 2 million Afghans who were mostly in the rural areas). They were killed indiscriminately by the drone and air strikes and they saw the invasion not as a liberation but as another foreign occupation. For this reason, according to a 2013 survey by Pew Research, over 94% of Afghans support Sharia law. For them, the Taliban offered sovereignty, security from ISIK, and refuge from the corrupt US-backed Afghan regime which stole billions of dollars, hid their money in Dubai and London and Zurich, and told US soldiers to ignore the rapes committed by their soldiers.

The production level is through the roof, probably we don't see the other so much, as the design move away from grassroot style to legitimate documentary style. Don't worry the old style with fake but subtle handheld cam effects that stop appropriately in some phases of the format was seen too. Yes. I bet you just love to enforce or abuse your people like America abused you. This happen when you love those Taliban and the Sharia and at the last you guys will say, "well not all Afghanistans/Taliban are like that" or "This is not Islam but culture" or bla bla. America is a great example for people like you who love to make others life miserable by controlling them using Islam.
      This is the prob with the Muslim. Just because you and or majority want Taliban or Sharia, doesnt mean you can enforce the minority to do the same thing.
      Just like you dont like the idea of American Majority enforce American Hijabi(minority) to take off their Hijab. Or you can just tell our sister in America to follow or respect the decisiom of the majority if the majority decide to ban hijab or burqa.
      When this happen, you will only care about 1% of Muslim population in America which is minority. So why you ignore the minority in your country when they dont want the Taliban to enforce them to follow the Sharia law? You can speak up for minority in your country, but no, you will only speak up for those who you love, Taliban.

    I’m making friends with some families who have recently been resettled in my city from Afghanistan. I am taking them shopping, helping with their children and trying to help them find jobs and learn English. It is very difficult because many can’t even read their own language and I still haven’t been able to find a translation app that is audio in their language. They are wonderful people and I am praying for their remaining families back in Afghanistan. Their uncle was just taken by the Taliban a few days ago. It’s so very sad and my one friend who can speak English has PTSD and cries when she talks about her family. We are desperate for more volunteers to help them get resettled and to be a friendly new neighbor to them here in the US.

    That is the nature of American/European imperialism. Indians were “savages” as were Africans. They needed to be “saved” from their own savagery. So, native children were kidnapped and sent to “schools”. Africans were enslaved, experimented on, and sterilized, Latin Americans are put in cages. We can add the Cubans (who are still under blockade in an attempt to starve them), Chinese and Japanese wars to this list and even Brexit. Imperialists always have a “white man’s burden/white savior complex” that is based on fear, racism, and hatred. Contrast this treatment in the media, to the war in Ukraine. Ukraine was invaded, but the Ukrainian government won’t let African and Asian students evacuate with the white citizenry. The news chooses to mostly ignore this story to paint European Ukraine as plucky survivors who don’t deserve this treatment unlike places in the Middle East or Africa, who are always “fighting long wars”. Of course, they never say who they’re fighting with…

      @@legatilegions8055 Ah yes, Biden 'condemned' them. Big deal. The war is using US weapons and being carried out with impunity for years with practically no sanctions being placed on Saudi Arabia for it. Also the US was itself involved in the war earlier, and had continued to support Saudi Arabia with weapons despite the war.
      Contrast the reaction to Russia's war, which has killed far fewer people, to the one in Yemen. Better yet, contrast the reaction to Iran - until recently the most sanctioned country on Earth, for not even going to war, just wanting the same weapons the west allows Israel without hesitation.

    If you're talking about problems of the media, it would be unjust to not mention how corporate influence (in this case oil or defense companies) can influence media. While I'm sure all your points are something for an individual journalist to learn from, the problem may lie more at the systemic level than the individual level. The solution probably lies in crowdfunded media which is answerable only to the people and not to corporations.
