Neat trick, didn't know about this. I agree that sometimes you need to split columns by level, but I do not see the benefit of doing so unless the size changes For example in your model, lets say the columns are one size from level 1 up tp the top of the garage, and then a smaller size for the rest of the tower. I would only have two splits, unless the size changed again. Looking forward to the next part, maybe it will make more sense to me. Also, does the split by level work on walls too?
You are absolutley I would only recommend doing this if the column size changes at different levels. I believe I, unfortunately, failed to mention that in the video. Honestly, I am for this way of organizing columns if the columns change size even just once. The next video will explain the organization and how it is so easy to manage columns this way. Unfortunately, this is not an option when it comes to walls (I wish). The only options we have for walls using the Copy/Monitor tool are to change the alignment of the walls (exterior finish, wall centerline, etc.) and to copy openings in walls.
Unfortunately, the tall side of the building has 10 levels but when you split the columns on that side they seemed to have picked up the other 4 levels on the short side and now instead of 9 columns you have 13. Is there a way to exclude the levels you don't want?
Thank for another fantastic video. It's important for structural engineers to split columns as architectures normally draw columns spanning from bottom to top. However, if the project contains other architecture elements such as doors, walls etc, do you still recommend doing it this way?
You’re very welcome! I know what you’re saying about architects. They do it because it’s easier. The idea is to model not only the columns but everything as it will be constructed in reality, so I would split columns everywhere that is supposed to happen.
Regardless of how you tackle this, it would be complicated. There is not a simple way to actually split the Revit model by level in Revit. Thinly way to technically do this at the level line should to use dynamo to create geometry of your entire model so it is one piece then to split at each level. You would lose all your Revit data this way. You could also export from Revit and do something similar with the geometry in another program such as rhino.

If its an analysis model then you need to split

Most welcome!
Wow Its awesome TRICK
I know, right!
HI, THANKS WORK FOR ME. WE CAN SPLIT WALL WITH THIS METHOD?
You are welcome! Yes, this can work with walls. As you get into the copy/monitor settings, there is a walls tab where you can do something similar.
Thank you, excellent video. Please be kind and turn off background music. Much appreciate. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I have turned off background music in later videos.

Your video is useful but could have done in 2 minutes.
Thanks though.
Yes, it is a bit long, sorry for that.

What setup problem are you having, I’d be happy to help.
