  • This video shows how to mod two common flysky receivers in order to get a RSSI reading on your OSD. I did this mod to give myself some more confidence pushing long range for a mini quad. All my testing so far has been with a little 2dbi wifi antenna and the range has been exceptional. Can't let the crossfire guys have all the fun ;)

    Hi I've just done the mod. Seems to work good. However i have the problem with scaling the value of RSSI.
    Setting max scale = 255 on offset = -40, gives range 0-70%(0-15-----60-75).
    Is there any solution to reach scale 0-100%?
    Or my receiver is hmmm, bad?

    • @antzd
      @antzd  6 лет назад

      I don't think there is a solution to reach the full scale. If RSSI drops below 50% the signal is already getting sketchy with link quality(error rate). My advice would be to set your offset to get a scale from 30-100% and use 50% as a marker that your signal is on the edge.

BF as far as I know has some kind of filter, that is why it works on BF, but iNAV do not recognize. Are you saying the FS-A8S doesn't do RSSI normally? I have one in my Wizard X220S and it reports the same RSSI value shown on the BetaFlight Setup screen on my goggles OSD, I can see the RSSI. I am having trouble with it and that's what bought me here, what I am experiencing is a few Failsafe crashes because my signal has dropped off and down it goes, I am trying to work out if this RSSI reading is correct or not though because it never goes above 60-62%, even standing next to the Quad. I am not sure if I have weak signal issues (re Failsafe activations) or just a coincidence, what I am keen to know is... is this standard FS-A8S showing me a real RSSI signal or is it not even able to therefore probably completely inaccurate and wrong, just a number? Not modified, just standard, came in the Quad.

    • @antzd
      @antzd  6 лет назад

      The FS-A8S is not one of the telemetry receivers so the only way to get the real rssi out is through the mod. I suspect that the RSSI you are seeing on the OSD is just one of the aux channels that has been selected as RSSI. Upgrading the antenna on the FS-A8S will help with range.

    • @BrigzyFPV
      @BrigzyFPV 6 лет назад

      True, it isn't but it does display all the OSD in my goggles, batt, time etc, and RSSI Signal strength, it isn't set to an Aux channel either. Maybe its because it's a V2 model, that's what it says on it. Do you think it could be a bogus display, like it isn't really working? I'm new to the Quads so trying to get head around all the tricky stuff. It does seem to work but unfortunately I have a weak signal, max it goes to is 62% strength, it does lower as I fly away too, so not saying you are wrong but it does work and on setup page in BF it is not set to Aux CH, it says Disabled in that drop box.

      @@keyrrjohnmelperino8871 It does affect the radio sync slightly because the tapping off rssi with the wire drops the voltage going to the logic chip which calculates the signal to noise, the rssi scale on the flight controller can adjust for this drop but the receiver can't and therefore falsely detects a weaker signal. Thank you very much for the answer. When my X6B arrives, I will open it and try to see if it will be the same chip and the capacitor will be the same. I also want to ask what kind of gimbal you put -M7 or another? Does it fit the FS-I6S or do something extra on TH to fit properly? Do you have some videos or photos while changing a gimbal :). And last question.With this antenna mod how much better signal do you have compared with the original antenna 20-30%?

    • @antzd
      @antzd  6 лет назад

      I put in the FrSky M7 gimbals, it requires a lot of work inside the radio, I had to dremel away the original gimbal mounts completely then glue the M7 gimbals in place and figure out the wiring with a multimeter. The gimbal mod looks and feels great though. The antenna mod is extremely easy and well worth it, the most important aspect is that it gets the antenna up above your hands in the correct orientation. The stock placement of the internal antennas requires the signal to pass through your hands from most angles which blocks signal. I have not had a single failsafe since doing the antenna mod and from the video you can see I fly at quite a decent range using 2dbi antenna only.

    This is a PWM signal, getting analog, good linear accurate reading with resisters and capacitors won't do the job right, IT IS A DIGITAL signal! But, my mateksys f405 has a rssi in and it according to docs is a pwm input, but I get 0 zero zed, I put the same signal into a device to display pwm and it gets it. I put on a scope and it's definitely a square wave.

    • @antzd
      @antzd  5 лет назад

      Hi Larry, I haven't tested the signal on an oscilloscope, through experimentation I discovered that the voltage drops as signal strength weakens. I currently feed the output rssi from the receiver to my flight controller rssi ADC input as analog rssi and it does the job for my needs. The max voltage the rssi output puts out is 1.6v so I don't see it working with regular pwm which operates between 1.8v and 5.5v.

      @@antzd actually on scope its, what u see as high is ave of current high and 0 volts, remember its a square whose time in high determines pwm value.

      as long as rssi is 99% or close to it its good but the value is way less accurate for values 80% and less as what u are going to see is going to fall on a upwards exp. , log scales, this why the value jerks all over place unless rssi is cose to 99%, even then its jerking all over, suggestion, the Fli10, 14 and 14+ have rssi fed back to sbus channel 10, cheap small flysky compatable, they only do sbus u should be ok.

      @@fpvkabo Good point. I know the i6 also has the option to send rssi over a free channel with modified firmware. I'm not too bothered with the value jumping around, I just use it as a rough gauge to know when my signal is below half.

      @@antzd the fli receiver option doest send to the controller n back, it goes straight to the fc thru the sbus connection, If i depend on the receiver to send to controller that link back is going to degrade long before the link from controller to the receiver, the sbus onto to ch10 is waycool, fport aslo does same thing on ch16.

      I did it. seems 100% fine. but not work. because when transmitter is on it shows 1.3 volt and in off condition it shows 0.6 volt but when i tested it by moving transmitter away the voltage is increasing instead of decrease and giving false result. I think this method is not possible sorry uploaded but this cant work i think. I have fs i6 and omnibus f4 pro v2.

    So I did this mod just now with the FS-ia6b. seems to work. I have to set my rssi offset way high (190) goes to 30% when Tx is turned off. But now my Tx (FS-i6s) rssi low warning beeper is going crazy and showing 1on the readout. anyone else experience this?

      This problem happens when you add too much capacitance to the rssi signal.

      Hi Jacopo, the voltage should drop from 1.3 when the signal gets weaker. It normally takes a fair distance or many obstacles in the way to drop, adding a tiny capacitor helps smooth out the transition.

      It sounds like the RSSI output on your receiver may be faulty. Does the RSSI value on the radio transition smoothly? All three of my receivers transition smoothly between about 0.8v and 1.3v when the radio is on.

    Both wire get solder into the rssi port on flight controller I only see you solder 1 wire on your fc..where do the other get solder to? Thank you for this video hope to get this working..sub

      The other side gets soldered onto the capacitor leg leading to the RSSI pin on receiver. You just need one wire for RSSI.
