Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/SimplifyVegGardening Growing potatoes in containers is so easy and effective, however, it does come with some drawbacks. Last year a I created a support system from cattle-wire to keep the foliage upright. This works brilliantly however I felt I could improve on it.
This video will show you why I built a new system and how effective it really is.

I really think you're the premiere RUclipsr for growing potatoes. I've learned so much from you as I try to become self-sufficient in potatoes. Thank you.
Thank you Mj K I really appreciate that and glad your learning from the videos. I am sure you will get there, its a learning curve but will be much quicker for you than it was for me as Im giving you proven methods
I have not only learned SO MUCH from your videos and teaching but have also been greatly encouraged in my gardening efforts! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Funnily enough, I had already done this with bamboo canes and jute string. It is actually very effective.
Perfect David yes the wire was brill last year, but this is an improvement over that
Mine have just been battered by the wind this morning. Didn't know it was a thing as I've never grown potatoes before and they are huge things! The second I noticed just bamboo and sisal
The Spud Master returns😊.
Yup i finally had time to get in the garden
@@simplifygardeningI'm playing catch up aswell but you have so much work to do with so many tunnells and beds I take my hat off to you Tony💪.
Aye the Potatoe man indeed. Taking yer advice on the first Earlies was a blessing indeed, a layer at the bottom level and a layer on the upper level, works a Treat just harvested my first Raised bed of Maris Bards today, 6.4kg of perfect beautiful big babay tatties. Thanks man for yer advice on the Spuds nothing like feeding yer family with homegrown spuds.
I love that system, your potato plants look great!
Thank you! Yes, I can see how this is much better. It’s probably much easier to pull out the cut foliage too, without the small grid of the cattle panel.
yes it is, you can see it better in todays video. check out todays video on potatoes I think you will enjoy it. ruclips.net/video/L1rf1FXtI9s/видео.html
Like the simplicity of this trellis frame Tony thanks for sharing i may give that a go next year with the buckets, PS enjoying your book well done mate, stay safe Alan
Thanks Alan glad your enjoying the book mate
LOL We just finished putting our wire mesh over 3 raised bed frames
yesterday. We'll keep your new wood framed system in mind for next year.
TYFS
We find a way that works and the wire does, but then try to improve on small issues
was literally thinking of this yesterday - growing a lil under 20 varieties of potatoes/sweets - thanks Tony!
Awesome. The wire worked well but the storms we are having they would have been wrecked this year
Funny I came across this video today.
I had a lot of wind the past few days and my gardens took a beating .
The potatoes are in a narrow raised bed shielded by the back of my house but they still get beat up with the mountain winds up here in N. Georgia.
I like this idea and I’ve been meaning to build something out of some weathered 2x2’s I recycled from an old cabin I restored and you just gave me my marching orders….lol.
Get it sorted before the wind knocks them for good, once its built you have it for next year too
Thank you for your book on composting. I thought I knew how to compost, but since reading your book, I realize that there were so many gaps in my knowledge. It's a must-have for every gardening library. This year I have experimented with growing potatoes in wood chip and so far it seems to be working, but the proof will be at harvest time. Thanks for all your videos, I'm never too old to learn, even at 79.
Hi Lynne. Wow, thank you for saying you enjoyed the book. And I am glad you found value from it. Hopefully, others will feel the same. A lot of effort went into the book. I hope you have a brilliant harvest and keep me informed :)
Great way to improve a system that was already great. Wonderful video, Mate.
Great solution! I will try it for my raised bed potatoes as well. A neat and tidy garden is a beautiful thing. Thank you.
yes it is
Spring winds can be a real turn off for me planting anything. I'm glad to hear this. Ty
your welcome, we get real bad winds here so I am sure it will help you
Have been doing this for 3yrs , I fasten the side supports to the up rights with cable ties so I can raise the side supports up as the potatoes grow
Perfect Barry :)
Where I am, you can buy prefab lattice sheets or fence panels which might make the work a bit easier. Great video.
Good tip! Thanks
Brilliant idea re watering. Pipe along and individual pipes running down. 👍🏻
It will be when I get around to doing it
@@simplifygardening I’m just hoping the wood prices do come down a bit but I think regardless it’s worth it. Also thinking of a small solar pump with an old leisure battery set up. Nothing like making gardening easier.
Love the tips Tony. Just moved to Portugal to buy a farm and your channel will be invaluable. Thank you
Fantastic what luck Id love my own farm
@@simplifygardening well we haven't been lucky enough to find on just yet. Only have a small garden in the rental we are in whilst we are looking. We are pre planting tree's in pots and using as much space as we can to grow as much as possible this year so will be keeping an eye on your vids as usual👍 hope you are good mate
Thankyou for posting.
Thanks for viewing and commenting :)
eager to see the results
great stuff Tony 👍👍👍
I didn’t add a support system and I am seeing exactly what you’re talking about. I’ll have to find some scrap lumber to make some supports before they become too bad. I have a bit of yellowing down deep in the center. I check for moisture as you suggest but I’m unsure what’s causing this.
Thanks for the tip about pulling flowers, I didn’t know about that.
If they are 1st or 2nd earlies its possible this is old age and they are coming ready to harvest. when the plants turn 50% yellow then cut the tops
@@simplifygardening : They are Russets and Kennebec White. The Yukon Gold don’t show this yellowing and we’re planted a few weeks after the previous. Thank you Tony!
I've watched quite a few of your videos and never seen about pulling the flowers!! You learn something new every day 👍
Glad you like them!
I’m new to gardening Tony … don’t really know what I’m doing at the moment lol 😅but I am enjoying your vids and trying to pick up from you what I can. Just wanted to say thank you Tony😁
Hey Ann great to see you here and everyone starts somewhere. There is plenty to ensure you get off on the right track but if I’m doubt just shout 😀
@@simplifygardening thanks for the reply Tony really appreciate it 😀and that’s really king of you !!! Thanks again Ann 😊
As always, thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I’m so grateful I found your channel to help me on my gardening journey ❤️
I'm glad you are here to April. I'm glad your finding value in my videos
My potatoes have been battered so badly by wind and small children. If we get any viable potatoes it will be a miracle. Great video.
Get some form of support up for next year, look out for some free batten in skips where someone is having a new roof if you cant buy it
@@simplifygardening I'll keep an eye out. I think I'll have to modify your set up because I only have 2 50l pots in a very small back garden. I get such space envy when seeing all the allotments of RUclips gardening community.
@@thesmirkinggrape If thats the case maybe use a few canes nd some string
@@simplifygardening definitely will be doing something next year. Last year I lost all the potatoes to black leg, this year it's been another disaster of the small child making. Thanks again for the reply and suggestions.
Thanks for all your videos and advice, our first year growing potatoes and we are really pleased with the results
It looks like it will work well, thanks for the design.🙂
Your welcome
Top CLASS!!! Tony mate I could watch your videos all day … I just love your enthusiasm it’s infectious!!!
Glad you like them!
Genius. Thanks for sharing. Gonna give something like this a try.
Great let me know how it does for you Aidan
I have done something similar with bamboo canes. With uprights and weaving more of them in and out, if the haulms get bigger than expected just add more. I also use old hoses folk were throwing out with small holes drilled in them to water when nessarey.
Awesome Derek great tips for the community
I bought some of the ikea bags you mentioned before and planted some kennebec potatoes. They were planted over 8 weeks ago but the plants are not dying back and they should be by now (this variety takes 7-8 wks). Not sure where to go from here..... they’re continually putting out more green growth as well 😳
That's such an improvement from the fencing method Tony! Loving the Rooboob t-shirt! I know how much work you put into that design. Looks great matey. Danny 🌱
Having followed your advice, I have 30 buckets on the go. No trellis yet but I look forward to the results when the time comes. Thanks Tony 👍🌱
Thank you for another great vid from one of the best you tube gardeners.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
Nice! I'm going to built one of these for my container potatoes next season. I find it a bit amusing that although you use (I assume) the metric system there, you referred to the lumber you used as "2 x 1", the same as I would call it here in the U.S. (although it would only really measure 1-1/2" x 3/4")
x
Way to go! Love your idea! 👍🏼😉
Thank you Alice
Looks great 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
My 2 small rows in the garden and just a few in buckets wouldn't justify a wood frame... and I had no idea the potato plant grows that high. My first attempt was stunted.
For my corn, I bought some electric fence posts that have loops along the post for attaching wire. I just run string through them at multiple levels in a criss cross pattern to hold up the corn at different stages, since it's so windy here. Now I can do the same for my potatoes!
Yeah this is only if your doing your whole crop in containers
Great video, thanks Tony.
I use this idea and a lot of your other ideas.
I used rope this week to support the sides of my potato trellis. I hope that it works out okay.
I’m sure it will be fine. I needed something a little more robust due to the winds we get here
I never knew this about potato flowers. Too late for this year for me, but will do it for sure next year. Thank you!
Glad its helped
great idear tony
Cheers Steven
Nice idea Tony. My Kondor here are doing well so far. You gave me the idea to grow them and I am eagerly awaiting the harvest. I am growing a few other varieties as well including Fortyfold, a heritage variety from the 1800s so we shall see how they all stack up. Great video.
Thanks Dan :)Be interesting to see the results on your channel mate
Great idea Tony, might do this next year, i have containers at home in varioys places. Next am going to do them in my allotment, this would be a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Glad its helped you Lorraine
Thanks Tony. I’ve followed all your tips his year including erecting a framework above the containers. I’ve also experimented leaving five pots without support. The difference is exactly as you’ve demonstrated, the containers I left without support have been battered to bits, the rest look great. Thanks for the reminder to pull the flower heads off I forgot that.
Im glad your testing yourself too, now you know it works in your area
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge 🙏
I grow my potatoes in Queensland Australia and unfortunately I believe due to the subtropical environment my potatoes are always fairly small 😢
I'm building a similar setup out of 3/4" PVC pipe but I'm sure your wood version is stronger. 👍
*Great Concept*
Draw back
Wood, one season only
Rot may damage wood steaks
Alternative
PVC pipe
Its round so no corner edge to dig into plant stalk
Its plastic which should last several seasons
Easy assembly, just push together. No glue for storage later
Give it a whirl next time
This wood wont rot its pressure treated so resistent to rot
@@simplifygardening be careful with *Pressure Treaded Lumber* near eatable root food
The chemical in that lumber will leach out into your potatoes
You don't want to eat poison produce
Great idea Tony. ...I will be trying that myself.
One thing I did too was I bought one of those beach windbreaks for £5 off marketplace. I keep looking for more 😃
Great tip! Mavis
2.4 Metre long plasterboard pallet slats are a nice width at 70mm wide, plus they are free if you know somebody at a builders merchants or a contractor.
I don't bother planting my spuds in open ground anymore as a clump of containers takes up less space and is much easier to throw a fleece over.
I agree David and thanks for the tip about pallets
Another great video Tony. Would be awesome if you could do a "growing potatoes" playlist with the most up to date videos covering each part of your process? Im really looking forward to doing a full on crop of a bunch of different varieties this coming season down here in Aus.
Buckocb83 I already have 3 full potato playlists that has that for you
Those are the most spoiled potatoes I’ve ever seen 😂😂. But I can totally see the benefits great job 👏 Tony. Happy Jubilee weekend 🐝 safe Roobob and T
Thanks and glad you liked my new T design
I use 30ltr tree pots like yours. I put a 4ft bamboo in the centre and then tie string at three different levels around the plant to the bamboo. Don’t forget: never put a stick into the ground without a plastic top, coke can or such like on the bamboo top. If you get a bamboo in your eye you won’t rub it better 👻
Yes this works well if your growing a few containers. but on the scale, I am there would be way to much work doing that each year
great video and never knew that about the flowers as always thought that was the indication they were reading to harvest! I saw another comment and notice your feedback was to wait until foliage goes yellow (50%).
Yes Lisa, if the plants are still green they are still putting energy into the tubers.
This seems like a great improvement over the wire system you had before. It also seems like I could still set this up even though the plants are about a foot and a half tall. I think we have some spare wood we might be able to use.
Also thanks for the watering tips. We weren't sure how much water they would need. Cheers Colleen and Jason 🌱
Fingers crossed!
I’m following your method of planting in pots for the first time. My potatoes are thriving and growing like gangbusters. Wish I’d send this before because they are flopping all over the place. Next time I’ll support them. Did not know I should pull off flowers so I’ll do that. Love your videos. Thanks!
Glad your growing in potatoes, try to support it next year you will see a much better crop
We have powerful winds here in Canberra but my spud stems are about an inch and a half in diameter and the pots are right next to each other so they don't seem to suffer from the strong blows, they get to about four foot. Another thing I've noticed lately is that they are surviving frost with with an animal protection net. These we put on to stop possums chewing off the leaves. They are a very fine net. I used to put blankets on for the frost but just leave the net on for the life of the plant. I grow on a continuous basis to provide for us and we are now eight months into self sufficiency in spuds. This is even with about thirty days on frost. They say spuds don't like heat but it doesn't seem to be the case here. I grow any variety I can get but the Sebago are a easy grow and very prolific and the Dutch Cream are the wife's favourite for taste. I abandoned store bought compost a while ago and save all kitchen waste for it. I'm experimenting now with growing in aged Chicken, sheep and cow manure mixed with composted kitchen waste. Do post more on spuds as it comes up. Cheers.
Yeah I know the winds in Canberra. I stayed there for a few years back in 93 until 95. a beautiful place. only thing that puzzled me was the pubs shutting at 9pm lol
I will try your method for my potatoes in containers and corn in the ground this year. I've had to individually stake my corn in the past to pick them up from the wind.
Yes I have had to do the same in recent years
Three layer of netting that you lift all three in one go, after the haulms have grown more you lift two, an the third last to be lifted. I use this method for flowers that I cut, and this year for spuds as well.
Yeah thats great as well, dahlia growers use this form a lot
I have recently found your helpful website, You mentioned on one of your programs on growing potatoes in containers about our needing mulch and wood chip, I just can’t find which one it was on! Where did you say to look for wood chip? I am a fairly new gardener! Thank you Margy
How much space is between each of the bucket rows?
Thank you for all the lovely information. I am learning a lot Have you ever tried True Potato Seeds?
Was wondering on whether you could trial changing the containers that you use.. lets go supersize and try the Strata 90L Heavy Duty Garden Bin, would they work if you just keep topping up, or if your doing salads like Charlotte that you put multi layers of seed potatoes.. I even thought could you make like a hole on the side of the bin for the first level of seed potatoes to grow through and you train it up the side of the tall container. Would love your input.
Hi. I'm trying the system you have done. Especially with the wooden frame. Can I ask how high did you put the rail
Yep, looks nice and your plants are doing great. So the real question is: Are you getting bigger harvests by doing this? Do the containers that have no support have the same yields? If you are putting in the expense and effort then there should be a significant payback at harvest time to justify it.
I started watching you potatoes in 30l containers I went to my garden centre and got some first potatoes and thought I would go back in a few weeks and get some seconds then a few weeks later to get some main crop.
But of course, when I went back they told me I should have gotten all three at the same time.
But all was not a total loss I went into Aldi and they had some Scottish reds that were on the change so I got some and they are now in the 30l containers though they will be a bit later than they would have been?
I only tell you as I mist that not just on your site as I looked a few sites?
So if I did maybe others will as well, I know I must seem a bit slow but I bet I am not the only one. lol
Just made my frames out of roof batten.
Oh your lucky, yes get them all the same time to avoid losing out
Do you think that the Florida weave would work for potatoes?
Hi Tony, thanks for all your work. I am wondering if this support system was preceded by an experiment to see if flopping foliage really reduces harvest. Could the spreading just be the plant's way of capturing more sunlight? Is the trellis for improved harvest or the convenience of the grower?
i now need to work out how much wood i need to create similar for 10 buckets
This looks like a great idea. Unfortunately, my 5 potato pots are sprinkled throughout my garden around my 3 4'x8' beds wherever I could find space. Also, tiny black flea beetles are all over them this year (as wel as a bunch of other plants) and seriously eating the leaves. Any suggestions for controlling them other than pulling out the SEVIN bug killer?
I’d like to make this. Do you have a video or article on how to build this? Thank you
I dont have a build video but I do have a more detailed video about it. ruclips.net/video/AYdC60Hvxow/видео.html
Hmm, I just knock down the foliage so that it doesn’t get damaged by wind, I lay the vines directly on the ground sort of like a controlled method, if it’s already laying on the ground the wind can’t hurt it too much. Even in the pots, I just bend them down, but I guess that wouldn’t work for someone with minimal space. I mostly do it because I grow compact garden so I need light to get through so laying down the vines all in one direction allows me to minimize the area being shaded but also maximizing the sunlight for the potatoes.
Yeah that would be ok but there is 2 issues for most people, first the sun would heat the compost and it would require more water, second watering unless you have drip irrigation installed would be difficult to get to as the haulms are where you would need to walk
I really don’t know what I’m doing wrong but for the 2nd year trying spuds in tubs I’m deflated 😒had our lottie 3yrs so the first year just chucked stuff in & it grew. Over winter transformed our bindweed haven into raised beds (11 1.6m x 3.2m plus a shed & poly) so not a huge amount of space. Bought 20 tubs which sit on a bed…..2021 scabbed, small & poor yield. 2022 clean white, but small & a yield I’d expect from a single plant not 4. if the other 19 tubs are the same I’ll try once more but might have to resort to selling the tubs. So far it’s expensive….
I am after making something like this myself. What height did you build the structure and did you also put a timber down the middle to make it into a lattice or keep it as a ‘ladder’ style structure.
I'm miles behind you but my plants are growing on the sunny side of my place - an experimental series of 24 colorful (red, yellow, blue, violet) varieties of potatoes, what will come out of it? In 60 and 40 liter mortarbuckets with holes, car tires, cardboard box, and in the ground. And with cattle grid support bowing and bellying everywhere. Scrap lumber is at hand already. Happy to know your channel! So motivating!
Q: Why do they name a variety "Nemo"?
A: It looks like Little Nemo in its red pyjama with yellow spots!
Thats sounds very interesting. Have you seen my video about growing potatoes on tires? if not you might want to give it a view
@@simplifygardening On the spot! Right now I'll look it up.
Hi Tony, I tried containers for the first time this year but I’ve ended up with a lot of really tiny potatoes about 1cm wide. There are some larger ones but quite a lot of smaller ones. Is that normal? What can I do to improve the size of the potatoes in the containers I have left?
Excellent timing and content! First time growing potatoes. Some came up really close together. Do I let them grow, or can they be separated and replanted?
Was planning to do something like this (to combat deer) out of saplings.
Leave them grow now dont try lifting or you will kill them all
And Thank you!
How many rows have you planted per support system and how far Appart please?
When you are taking the flower heads off,is this essential?do I need to do it with first and second earlies?I've never seen that done before
It is not essential, but it will mean that energy is used by the plant to form flowers and seed, the plant stops putting that energy into the tubers so yield will be less than if you removed them
@@simplifygardening thank you,I'll try it as mine are showing some flower heads now, thanks Tony👍
I chopped the top off it regrew put out new shoot
Could you reuse the compost from the containers to grow more potatoes? What’s the best thing to use the used compost for?
Yes chris check this video out ruclips.net/video/3G9du1Bhlas/видео.html
When do you know when they are ready ? I thought if there are flowers they are ready. Is about 70 days good?
Jean wait until the 50% of the foliage has turned yellow then good to go
If you used PVC instead of timber, couldn't the trellis BE the drip irrigation system as well? Great idea for a trellis above the potatoes, it makes me wish I would have grown potatoes in buckets this year.
Yes it could be thats a good idea
How often would you recommend to water buckets of potatoes?
Hey Tony North Atlanta how high above the potato buckets is the frame.
2:00 18"
18"
:)
Can you use garden netting to cover your potato plants? This is my first time growing potatoes in containers, and they look great so far. However, I have a serious deer problem, and they eat everything. Right now, I have a fishing line "fence" around my veggies to deter the deer and it also helps support the plants. I wanted to add some netting to the plants for an extra layer of deer protection.
Yes you can but it would need to be frames above the plants you could not rest it on the plants
@@simplifygardening thank you!
Tony, how reliable is your source regarding the price of timber falling? I'm just about to start building a workshop barn at the bottom of my allotment and if I can get timber cheaper I'll hang off.
Its come directly from a timber mill, I was going to buy some to create a new studio and was told to hold off. However I dont have a guarantee, but im holding off for the moment
Hi I tie mine up to a trellis on the back of the planter
Great idea
I'm going to fill my 1 meter high bin with compost, would you suggest 2 potatoes every level? Also I'm thinking 3 levels or 4? Cheers
depends on how big the bon is if its a pallet sqaure do 4 per level
Is it best to remove potato flowers when they come through? This is my first year growing anything. I will definitely be making a support frame like this as my garden gets a lot of wind.
Yes remove them it wastes energy going to the tubers
@@simplifygardening Thanks. My Maris Pipers haven't started to flower just yet but the foliage is getting quite big now.
can you trim potatoes like tomatoe plants? thx
What type of drippers do you use to water the pots
they are 4 liters an hour drippers, i run them for 30 mins a day when its real dry
How many litres do the containers have room for?
Tony, how often do you fertilize potatoes in containers?
I’ve never heard of taking the flowers off potatoes. Why? I guess that prolongs the season and makes for larger potatoes? On occasion I get about half inch diameter round green ball where plant has flowered. Anyone know why?
June firstly when the plant puts out flowers all its interested in doing is going to seed, this means it stops putting growth into tubers as the energy is needed for seed. As gardeners we want tubers we dont need the seed, so we can send that energy down to tuber formation
@@simplifygardening thanks for your reply Tony which makes sense. Do you know why the green ball appears where flowers were occasionally? I’ve never seen it before and not heard one gardener speak of it. A freak of nature? Voodoo poisoning?
@@juneshannon8074 These green pods contain the potato seeds. Open up a mature one and take a look. They are extremely small. You should not let them get to this stage but should remove the flowers. They waste energy which could be used on growing potatoes. Remove the pods to avert wasting any further energy.
@@joemercieca4794 thanks Joe. Common sense told me that, but to me they looked evil, poisonous, lol. They reminded me of deadly nightshade which a few come up on our property.
@@juneshannon8074 Well they are not evil, but they are poisonous. They contain the chemical Solanine which is the same chemical found in green potatoes.
👍
wow your potato growth is huge, is that normal? mine is much smaller.
They got a bit leggy as they were indoors longer than normal. Im hoping its not to the detriment of the tubers, but we will see. Ideally id like them to be a bit shorter
Would that also work if they were planted in the ground?
Of course Sarah if you need to support them
@@simplifygardening thank you. I love the trellis idea in order not to have to bend down too much in order to pick off the flowers. Saves the back 😊
3rd June do I take flowers of my potatoes
Just before the 4 min. mark he said he picked off a flower.
Once they start pull the flowers it will add more energy for tuber formation
