I bought the TC Sentry and I'm just blown away by this pedal. I put it right up front and use my clean signal to trigger all my drive pedals that I put in its send and return loop. Whisper quiet to shrieking wall of doom instantly.
Man, regardless of extensive insight you offered people on how to decide between these pedals, I love your picking and playing, your style is commendable indeed. Cheers from an Iranian musician in exile!
After watching the video, I bought the TC Sentry Noise Gate and I am so amazed that I have no desire to even try the Decimator II G String. Thanks for the video review. I fully expected the ISP to win when I watched it. I was very surprised at the results.
These two comparison videos are really well done. It's obvious that you thought this out, learned the ins and outs of each pedal and understand how the tests should be done. Great guitar playing too! Thanks for posting this! It's been educational!
It's expensive because it does what other noise gates on the market can't do, you can put the G II anywhere in your signal chain. Unlike other noise gates.
Great presentation, no nonsense and awesome tone. The only thing missing was a description of how you set up both pedals. I believe the only advantage of the Decimator is that you can link two pedals in a stereo setup, or use one in front and one in the FX loop. You could probably do that with two Sentry's but I'm not sure how different settings on both pedals might affect the output. Thanks for making the video! \m/
I have had the decimator and I currently own the sentry. Yes the sentry has more bells and whistles but what I found is the sentry does good with gain pedals before and after the pedal. The decimator does great with gain after. For some reason the decimator with hotter pickups or boosts, gain or fuzz pedals in front of it you need the crank the threshold up alot more then the signal starts getting really choppy. I actually do far prefer the sentry over the decimator.
It's because the Decimator is a buffered bypass noise gate. When you put gain and fuzz pedals in the loop of Decimator it buffers them and buffering up gain and fuzz elevates their noise levels. Sentry fares better because in its default setting it works in hardwired bypass mode, which although doesn't buffer the effects has its own demerit of sucking the tone to some extent. I used to own both of them but recently I've switched to the Janglebox J-Gate, it's a true bypass analog optical noise gate. Since it's an analog true bypass noise gate it doesn't suffer from the tone suck issues of the sentry. Due to its all optical operation it doesn't suffer from the latency issues that impacts other noise gate pedals. Of course compared to the decimator and sentry it does take more space on the pedalboard but that's wasn't a big issue for me.
@@TheNocturnalEvil I'm going to have to check that pedal out. I have the sentry still and I just picked up the gstring decimator 2 to do my own ab test. That's really awesome to know! Thank you!
@@johnathan.jerusik I am wondering what is the result of you comparison? I am trying to decide what gate should I buy, I am considering deci-mate G micro / decimator 2 G string or Sentry.
@@OneSipToDrunkenness hey man!!! So I still have the sentry. 2 reasons why. The decimarmtor is a noise suppressor vs the sentry is a gate. So you can set the sentry to basically when your playing, it doesn't effect the sustain. And when you stop it clamps and it's quite. I actually have done a demo on my personal page. I have owned both decimators and yes they were nice but they didn't work as well as I wanted them too. 2 the sentry is wicked versatile! It has the gate mode and the hiss mode. Plus 3 knobs to really dial in what you want to clamp and when. And it has yhe whole tone print library. So if you want to play straight metal they have a tone print. If you want to tweak it and dial out certain frequencies you can do that too
thank you for the video, was very helpful.....I had the original isp g string and it sucked tone bad, even with it "bypassed"......removed from my chain and the sound was much better. I will never buy anything ISP again.
6:17 I think, you should put the pedal in the EF loops to test if the pedal colored the tone and then switch off the EF loop, instead of just switching off the pedal because by doing this the signal will be still passing through the buffer's pedal (decimator) even though is turned off. Sentry is true by pass, so the signal may decay but just for cable length.
Great review as always! Wondering if you've ever gotten a hold of a GUPTech S.U.N. to compare? It's a 2, 3, and 4 line noise reduction circuit like the G-string but only costs about CAN$170 vs. $275 for the G-string.
it sounded like you liked the TC more man! I have the Decimator 2 and it's my second one. I'm done with ISP. I really hope my TC is just as good as this one. And I hope I don't have a sustaining problem. I'm definately subbing.
We were just massively surprised by the TC's ability to completely remove string noise! We've never really heard any other noise suppressor do that. Maybe there is but we've never tested it before.
Hi, I was wondering when you used the TC Sentry tone print beam thing did you try all of what was online on the time print and the one you used in this video did you find best or is the Gary Holt or Scott Ian one better?.Thanks
I own both. The Decimator is better overall. I use the Decimator in the loop to kill amp noise and the Smart Gate out front. If I switched them around the Decimator kills it up front but the Smart Gate doesn’t work too hot in the loop.
@music bliss Malaysia - thank you for the video. Nice comparison. Hi what is the best noise gate for a soldano amp?...the effects loop of soldano is very particular, it is +4db....all noise gates which I have used does not found with soldano.....thanks
Great shoot out, you've helped me decide what one to go for! Quick question about routing for most effective noise suppression... My Set up now is Guitar, tuner, Boss NS-2 then Maxon OD808 into the front of EVH5150. I have a delay in the FX loop. How would I run the Sentry in the Fx loop as well if I wanted to get rid of that annoying high gain hum that is always there when the high gain channel is activated, am I missing something with the FX loop, or will the sentry do the job just doing a loop infront of the amp with the overdrive in the loop of the sentry?... About to bite the bullet and buy one!
All To Ruin This is the best way. From guitar to tuner to maxon to Sentry in. Sentry send to front of amp. Amp fxloop Send to Sentry return. Sentry out to delay to Amp fxloop Return. Shouldnt need the NS-2 anymore.
yo bro, you might want to try these vids again with a single coil guitar, they tend to have super feedback, humbuckers tend to mellow out the sound naturally. im a bassist but currently playing guitar now and my guitar at the moment is tele, dropped tuned strings "beefy slinky" im convinced the "g-string pedal" is the better choice but im a few weeks away in making my purchase. please help me out :)
Any chance you guys could do a review on the Precision Drive by Horizon Devices pedal? You guys did an awesome review of these two noise gates and I'd like to see your thoughts on this overdrive pedal.
Unfortunately with our market, we tend to get the latest models a wee bit late...there's also a chance we'll never even get it due to a lack of demand... So yeah, no promises, but if we get we'll definitely demo it....
Speaking from experience with the Precision Drive, it is pretty much the best drive pedal I've ever used. It's like a low pass, OD, midrange EQ, and gate all-in-one pedal. The gate on it is pretty snappy; like an immediate cutoff once you hit that threshold.
It would again come down to the settings. At at extreme setting the initial harmonic will be heard, but the sustain might not be that long...it should work well with the typical Zakk Wylde pinch harmonics....
Looks like you're not using the "Key In and Out" on the ISP G-string.. So, you're really just comparing a Sentry to a Decimator II (which works best when using 2 linked together). The Sentry is a good "front end" gate (like the MXR Smart Gate), but the G-string (used in the loop, with the Guitar In and Out) is unbeatable.
That's exactly what I was thinking! I'd like to say no if you tweak it a bit in the software, or leave it as default settings. I think I'm gonna go for the Sentry because it's a lot cheaper and more customizable.
the amp/guitar itself has too little noise for this kind of content, I can't hear how fast the Noise Gates/Noise Supressors/Expanders are cutting the noise at the first part of the shoot out where you play staccato.
The ISP Decimator is too expensive just for the purpose to remove some noise. Contrariwise, the Sentry has three controls you can dial depending of your signal chain and your playing style. The TonePrint function seems to be also a great feature.
You definitely want a fast tracking noise gate, the ISP is definitely fast and easy to use. However it's not just down to the noise gate, you gotta have a fast right hand as well. Cheers =P
