Thankyou Colin!!! its been a bumper year for me and gear (been playing for years but never owned a thing) 2 orange amps, a ream of vintage 30s, bunch of pedals , a focusrite 2i4 and dont ask how but i wound up with a rivera rock crusher recording. last on my "need" list was a noise gate or something like it. now i know what i want, just have to find one here in Victoria BC in Canada.. have to say i LOVE my tc electronic polytune 2.. man. this has been auch a great year.. love the channel mate more !!! more!!! , regards, Scott.
I have been considering upgrading from my NS-2 to the TC Sentry. I had my first NS-2 last for about 19 years. Then I replaced it with another. I was really excited to hear about the multi-band feature on the TC Sentry. Great job on explaining in your videos.
Check out the Electro Harmonix Silencer, its the same as the Sentry for only $57 new and compare it with the Sentry before you buy. I did and I walked out the store with the Silencer and had extra money to spare to buy another pedal. :)
I know about the EH Silencer. The T.C. Sentry I think is more advanced, it has muti-band reductions. It is a little different in the way it tracks the signal for noise. But, thanks for replying.
Thanks, I just got the Boss NS-1X too late to test out tonight, but thanks for this video, I am ordering a Sentry and see which one is better to get rid of my hum and white noise from my Langer Modded high gain Marshalls!
greetings from Sri Lanka !!! tried the send and return options on my Boss NS2 works like a charm proper game changer sounds so much cleaner now. thanks a bunch mate
Another thing that is awesome about this in comparison to other pedals is that if you have it set right and you put it after your delay pedals in the effects loop, it doesn't kill your delay tails at all, where others do. this pedal is great and I have always been a noise gate hater. lol
The way the TC pedal is introduced to the viewer by a fast moving, wristband wearing hand movement earned the like for this one within a minute, classic!
I love my sentry. Although I use it a bit differently. I use it through my fx loop (and patch my time based pedals through the sentry's fx loop). For one, this tames a noise issue in my fx loop, but I also discovered I could tame the tails of my delay effects (I stack two of them) and avoid the muddle.
@Odell Mateo Very good. Needs a little bit of tweaking, compared to some of the single knob noise eaters such as the Smart Gate or the Decimator, but once you learn how to use it, you should be satisfied.
*You know, it would be great if you would do a TUTORIAL on the Sentry Gate, using high gain, whereas how to get it to gate naturally and let notes ring and then using it for classic leads where the notes ring with lots of sustain WHITE SNAKE like.*
Hey dude, love the channel! Would you consider doing a more in-depth video on hum reduction pre-noise gate, or as if someone doesn't have a gate. You spoke about power conditioning and shielding - think me an amateur but not totally sure what this refers too! Cheers!
my amp has that noise too. i will check the noise gate. first time i hear from that. maybe you saved my life...i checked now my shop.. but this Sentry is very expensiv.. for that price i can buy a Fender Mustang amp what have all possible pedal and amp choices. but thank you anyways.. here more than 2000 usd..
I've compared this TC Electronic Sentry to the Electro Harmonix Silencer and the Silencer was the winner. Was just effective if not more than the Sentry for only a fraction of the price at $57 new. A much better value IMHO. Folks do a youtube search on the Silencer.
My plans have now changed. I origionally was going to GC to pick up my guitar form the garage, and i got a TC Ele Dark Matter, and thats all i thought i was going to get. But now: Pick up guitar Buy strings Buy Sentry Happy
hey, what should my setup be if i got a sentry...but am trying to silence my loud amp's 3rd channel...basically, i have an OD pedal as a boost for the 2nd channel, but don't boost in the 3rd super high gain channel? i'm not sure how to go about wiring this up as i've seen conflicting information...
Cool review, so.. who are the noisy neighbours playing in the background? :P Seriously, I will very probably check this pedal out as my nephew, despite my best advice feels the need to buy a 100 watt (RMS) Peavey for use(at the moment) mainly in his bedroom .. sighs... maybe a Xmas present :) Thanks again for a cool vid Colin...
Hi, finally the in depth review of the Sentry i was looking for!!! however i still have some questions though, how does it performs in the "Hiss" mode? Also, what does "crossover", "exp.knee" and "ratio" on the tone print editor? also whats the difference between "Hold" and "decay"? (also on the tone print editor) Cheers!
+SweBass I'll perhaps do a follow up video on setting up a custom Sentry TonePrint once I've had a bit longer to play about with the Editor and get to grips with just what everything is doing.
+CSGuitars can u still feedback with this pedal, cuz thats actually a plus for me if u can as my band has a lot of punk and eyehategod influences and the feedback notes are quite musical to us when playing but the annoying hum and hiss when not playing is the worst
+CSGuitars Please do this. I just got one of these and it's fantastic but I want to have a look at the editor so I can see if I find something that suits me and my setup even better.
Hold is how long before decay I would presume, decay would be time/speed of decay. Crossover is the cutoffs/frequency for the different bands. Exp.Knee and ratio sound like compressor stuffs.. I'm not great on that.
I need to shield the cavities of both my guitar and bass first before I buy a noise pedal. Should I also shorten the wires and twist the wires together as well to get the clearest signal going into my amp?
+CSGuitars hey i love your show can we please get a how to reduce the noise floor by showing what shielding how to do it. also what is a power conditioner? anything else that might help please. Live in an old house but i could also have bad habits like coiled cables and stuff, but i dont know much when it comes to this area.
So you're saying the Sentry can be set up to just mute any 50Hz-hum there might be? Either way, it can only be more idiot-proof than the BOSS NS-2, which I've had for about three years, and still haven't been able to set up and dial in properly so it's actually useful...
Hi Colin, I just got my sentry but to be honest I'm completely useless with setting the toneprint up (I just don't get it) any chance you could explain how to do it properly (no noise, uninterrupted sustain ) I use it with four cable method just like my old ns 2 Cheers!!!
Why is this gate $130? The EHX Silencer is way cheaper, for what appears to be the same thing? I’m asking because I’m just trying to decide which to buy. I’ll spend more IF it’s justified.
Hi I just found your video and love the way you use humor in presenting your review. My question is what is the best place in my chain to put the sentry, in the beginning or end. I currently have a pedalboard with overdrive, compression and a few modulation pedals and my amp does have an fx loop. thanks
My noise comes from my guitar (turn volume down on guitar noise goes away). How would this compare to a Decimator 2 g-string? I don't care for the way the Decimator g string cuts out. With the gate set low it closes too slow. With the gate set high it cuts notes too easily. I can't find the middle ground. If it had independent controls istead of one knob it might be better. Does the TC have much affect on tone?
Would this stop the microphonic squad that my pickups produce when I am at high volume, hi gain and stand near the amp/ stop playing. It is ear piercing. Someone said I should wax dip my 34yo Gibson pickups but part of me doesn't want to mess with the guitar. Will the sentry solve my problem? Thx.
Instead of getting other pedals, could you used to send a return on the pedal alongside the effects Loop of your amp kind of like the ISP decimator g-string?
The pedal is VERY noisy. I got one today and returned right after testing. Opening and closing of the gate is OK, toneprint works too but whenever the gate is open it introduces a surprising lot of hiss, like you would turn the gain of your amp like +6 db or something. Really disappointing.
You either got a faulty unit or your issue was elsewhere (either in set up or the rest of your equipment). I've been using this unit for many years with no such issue.
I have rowin noise gate, which is doesnt have send and return output. So do u think should i put the noise gate before or after the preamp, please i realy need the answer
So is this still the best for the price or is there something even better available for similar price (Fortin Zuul is a bit too expensive for my taste)?
Will the Sentry kill any excess noise from high output pickups as well as hum from my amp? I'm running two Decimators at the moment (one in front of the amp and one in the fx loop) and I'd love to streamline my rig a little.
+cubegymnastir Hi, I've not had any experience with the Trirec. I've spoken to people who own the V22 and 6262 and all of them spoke very highly of those amplifiers. I've not had one single problem with my 333. I have upgraded all the valves, as the stock Bugera ones aren't great quality, and the amp has been running for a few years now without any issue. Yes, they are cheaply made amplifiers, but I think they are one of the best bargains you can buy. Worth a look.
Hey Collin, so you've got the pedal running through your chain that runs into your amp, and then running back out again from the effects loop ? So is it essentially being used twice ?
This is the best sound in any of your videos. I am really enjoying your higher quality videos recently, now you just need to do videos once a week!
I finally got one of these. It really is a great pedal. It lets me adjust it so it doesn't choke my notes off!.
These early videos from Colin have proven invaluable for me, having moved from London to Scotland and needing to key in on the accent 😅
Wish I had seen this video 3 years ago. Just ordered a Sentry to replace my ISP. Thank you sir !
I'd love to see a video on how this thing handles single coil 60 cycle hum for players that don't play crushing metal.
Go with an isp decimator
@@blacknapkin8211 i dont think Yngie uses a stock NS2

damn this TC Guys really produce some awesome stuff..
Just went out and got one of these because of your review, thanks Colin
This video sold me on one of these, and I'm so glad I got one

I always love your videos. Very informative and also entertaining. I may be late seeing them of course, but i enjoy them nonetheless. tyvm sir
this is probably the most brutal review of a noisegate ive ever seen. perfect!!
Colin is that you with the spot on enthusiastic American announcer guy voice? xD

Absolutely precisely & faithfully said. Great and objective review.
You're my favourite guitarist RUclipsr.
I just ordered one. But woe to you, oh Scottish product pimp, if that pedal does not meet my expectations! ;)

Wow. That sounds like a really great noise gate.
great demo there ! Seriously looking up for something like this in my rig, quite impressive.
Cheers from Paris.
wow this product sounds awesome, that "Send" feature its interesting.
Good Review. I'd like to see many more TC Electronics reviews.
Great review - enjoyed :)

Dude, love your accent! Scottish or Irish or Welsh or no idea xD Greetings from Northern Germany ;) PS. Subscribed ;)

I currently have a pedalboard with overdrive, compression and a few modulation pedals and my amp does have an fx loop. thanks
I'd say at the end. In fact it would be best to run all the pedals through the fx loop on the pedal for optimum performance.
What do you say about Bugera 333XL???
My noise comes from my guitar (turn volume down on guitar noise goes away). How would this compare to a Decimator 2 g-string? I don't care for the way the Decimator g string cuts out. Does the TC have much affect on tone?
So, will it shred?
I love your irish accent or scottish. idk I'm American.
Behold scottish
I’m a dullard. I still don’t get how/why the send/return loop works on this.

What is the different between Gate-mode and Hiss-mode actually?
Does this also have the same noise suppressing tech the decomator has?
What's a power conditioner for audio equipment?
is it better to put a noise gate into the effects loop?
Instead of getting other pedals, could you used to send a return on the pedal alongside the effects Loop of your amp kind of like the ISP decimator g-string?
Need advice. I have a power conditioner, Voodoo pedal power 2 plus, Mogami Gold cables, but some pedals still have the light buzzing. Would this work?

Hah! Too funny - whilst doin' a cool and informative video. Thanks mate!
Whelp I'm sold
that intro is hilarious
Is it a digital pedal?
There is a bit of legitimacy added to this when you factor in his accent. 😀
Dose the noise gate effect your tone?
This one doesn't really, but some do.
Flawless American accent 👍👍
And self-noise or digital artifacts apparent when using the Sentry?
Self-noise is really high, unfortunately. With my Uberschall it introduces way too much hiss that is inexistent when it's off.
have one on order, 150 bucks at long and mcquaid in canada.. sigh the loonie dont get a lot of pedal these days
Hey Colin, do you have any experiences with the Bugera Trirec Infinium? Also have you had any problems with your 333? Thanks in advance!

Can it remove the constant distortion/drive hum that is present while playing?
In my case, that IS my playing. I suck. A noise gate can't fix that.
The real question is..... Will it ever shred?
Does it djent
Does it ka-jug-a-jug?
Will it whiddle-ee-whiddle-ee-wee?
