This is both a boring and exciting release. Boring because it’s just a Ricoh GRiii with a longer lens. And exciting because it’s a Ricoh GRiii.. with a longer lens! I have been shooting with the 28mm equivalent GRiii for +2.5 years, so I feel I could at least give my thoughts on the new 40mm equivalent Ricoh GRiiix. Even though it’s not a full review.
The camera was leant to me by Kameradoktorn. I receive no compensation from them nor do they care about what I say about the camera. The shout out is just to show my appreciation:

Do you still recommend the GRiiix? I have the GRiii and like it
@@SoldierOfGod81 I prefer the GRiii because its a more useful focal length. When I bought the GRiiix I dint use it as much. And its to much money to just sit. But give it ago, buy used and you get your money back if you change your mind.
Bought a used GRii a few weeks ago. The GRiiiX appeared the following week. Just need to wait a few years and I can have one of them too!!
I was looking at one and came across a Leica X2. Colors and speed are really good
I totally agree with you about 28mm eqiv. Such an under appreciated focal length.
It’s almost all I ever need :)
Back in the day I loved that length on both my Pentax Spotmatic and Leica M4.
I have a GRIII and thought that it would be impossible to improve on, then Ricoh bought out the GRIIIX, yet again I was proved wrong. The GRIIIX is incredible, the new focal length and crop modes are amazing. I ended up buying the 'X' partly because I am a massive fan of the GR cameras and partly because the 'X' compliments the GRIII and my Fuji X100S perfectly, and yes, I do carry three cameras about with me 😆
I thought Ricoh already owned the gr name
4:40 Weirdly enough, I actually have to come to like 28mm equivalents a lot less because of how similar they are to the iphone base fov. Love that ricoh is offering different options for everyone
Happy to be here!!
Would love to pick up a GR II or IIIx one day. I think I’m still scarred from when the lens got stuck on my first GR. Even with lots of TLC and no drops, it seems they’re not built to last. That lens mechanism needing to go in and out is a weak point 😢
Just ordered GR III after announcement of GRIIIx. I’m big fan of 28mm and will be subtle companion to my Q2.
Anyway 50mm folks will definitely appreciate 40mm on new GRIIIx.
I simply love my GrIII. I will definitely consider buying one of these IIIxs to make a perfect pair with the 28mm.
I feel the same way.
I'm curious to know which app are you using at 2:54?
Hello Mattias, great video as always! Always a fan of Ricoh/ Pentax products. Anyways, would you be able to do a review of the Panasonic DMC-L1?? It’s the only rangefinder style DSLR i know. It also has full manual dials like the Fujis. But unlike the newer Fujis, the L1 was released back in 2007!
Great video! I have an X-T4 but sometimes don't want to haul that beast around or in some cases literally can't like in some venues. Really thinking about purchasing this as a second haul everywhere camera that my wife could also use when we're both out and about.
It’s not a million miles away from the 35mm film cameras I used in my youth, with added exposure controls, of course!
Its very close to its analog predecessors.
Hi Mattias. Good to see you and the ever beautiful and patient Krut again.
That X100 looks cool, as does your Nikon. Both remind me of rangefinders (Like the Fuji 35) and SLRs of the 60s and 70s.
Fantastic! Great video as always my friend!! What is the app you used to meassure the depth of field?
This is... The diffrancene to listen/youtbres techheads and a actuall photografer. People need to urgently understand, that good photography do not come with gear.
Hugs for Gunpowder! Nice pix & opinions. Perhaps duct tape can help with that accessory lens; or maybe not…lol. Thanks!
2:53 Could you tell us what software/app you use to calculate the depth of field? Thanks a lot.
What Depth of field calculator app do you use?
Great video, thanks. Which DOF calculator do you use and recommend?
The one in the video is called Hyper Focal Pro. It’s nice.
It's cool to see them branching out. I have been using the X-70 for the past couple of years, and I'm still not loving the experience of shooting 28mm equivalent for various reasons.
I don't really like the output of Fujifilm, so this would be a great upgrade if I didn't exclusively shoot street from the waist with the screen flipped up, and my gf didn't require it to check her hair before travel selfies. The Canon M200 with the 22f2 fits most of my user needs, but the snap focus and custom presets look too good to pass up.
Hey Mattias, I’ve enjoyed following your reviews which are both always informative and entertaining. Even though I own an M, it’s the GR III that I grab the most, it’s colors, highlight metering, snap focus make it a joy. Now considering the GR IIIx, did you end up buying one?
Thanks for the review.
Will probably stick with my GR III.
Would you mind sharing which depth of field app you’re using - works with iPhone?
Hyperfocal pro, I think its Android only. But Im sure there are others.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Thanks. I seems 'your' app is for Android only. However, I have a couple of apps, as well as have tried a few others. A simple spreadsheet - indeed, experience - does the job. With the apps, however, there's always juuuust something - like with camers - about the presentation, inputs, graphics, but for which they would otherwise be perfect!! ;)
Can you advise the hyperfocal app you are using please?
Explosion 30..29..
Why do you say the Zfc is faster than the XE4?
Because the Zfc has the fastest operational speed of any currently sold mirrorless.
What was the focus distance app you used?
I'll have to heavily disagree on 28mm being the best focal length, at least when it comes to me, it's all subjective of course. 40mm equivalent is about as wide as I'm willing to shoot while out and about in the towns if there are people involved. I'm an introvert, I don't mind talking to people, but I'm not very good with strangers, so not having to shove a camera in their face allows me to shoot without as much discomfort. I like to catch people working in workshops, food stalls, etc and capture their expression and focus. Doing so up close is annoying for them and not the easiest thing for me to do. The GR IIIx gave me a Ricoh I could actually use, and I was so happy when they announced it. Maybe it'll replace my GM1 or GX850 with 20mm pancake lens once I find a used one for a decent price.
TBH, my usual kit consists of 2 primes, the Sigma 1.4 30 and 56mm, and 1 zoom, the Pana Leica 2.8-4 12-60mm. That last lens gives away that I'm a MFT shooter, so the Sigmas are really 60 and 112 equivalents and the zoom 24-120. Prior to the SIgmas I used the Pana 25mm and 42.5mm so the 30mm Sigma is a happy medium for me that lets me be close without actually being close. The PL 12-60 is my goto for most street days on my Oly EM-1 Mark II and a GX85 with the Pana 20mm or Sigma 30mm in my bag. With the others sometimes brought along if I need the faster aperture, the MFT lenses are fairly small (Sigmas are APS-C based adapted, but they're not too big).
I just have been given Canon 60D with 50mm...can i do somethin good with it???? Thank y
You absolutely can. I could use that for pro work without question.
Heh. I can finally say this on a video: first!
I still love my GRii, but I see a GRiiiX in my future as well.
Thanks for the video Mattias, I got my GRiiiX 3 days ago and it doesn't disappoint, I've been using the GRii for 4-5 years and was considering getting a GRiii Street but then the GRiiiX was launched last month, I immediately put my order in. The snap focus set at 5m and f5.6 works really well. The GR series of cameras are by the best for street photography, imho.
Cool!
Have a GRii myself as the iii didn’t seem enough of an upgrade to merit the extra cost. The iiiX may tempt me though
@@paulanderson24 I didn't think it was worth upgrading either but having the GRiiiX Ido now to the point of I'm thinking of selling the GRii and getting a GRiii, it's that good having a touch screen and IBIS.
@@ducatitastic whilst I like the idea of the flash on the GRii I do rarely use it. The fact you didn’t consider an upgrade until you saw the X is testament to the GRii and this series of cameras in general.
Im getting one too!
Now if they’d just offer one with a 75 mm lens, I’d be ecstatic. That’s my go-to focal length. Sort of like what Sigma did with the DPM series.
They kinda are since there is a tele converter for the GRiiix. Not the same thing, but I guess the route they are going for now.
3:00 What is this app?
@Matt Burling - a gate way fix to understand a 28mm is the best all around lens? No :-). Not me! My deal breaker with the Ricoh GR/GRII has been precisely a 28mm equivalent FOV. Thats not me and trust me, I have tried it. It taught me how to shoot wide but that's not what I do.
The GRIIIx sure seems in line with a camera I specced like 5 years ago I wish they did. And here it is :-)
Yup, and while using it you will understand that 28mm is better :)
Cool vid! I want both. Will take me some time to save money though :-) I was wondering, what is the app you are using around the 2:54 mark?
Hyperfocal Pro? Not sure.
@@slimphotog Thanks! Will check
Thanks
Ricoh GR IIIx (40mm), Fuji X100V (35mm)
Ricoh GR III (28mm), Fuji XF10(28mm)
I see you tried them all.
XF20? What do you think if Fuji combines the XF10 & X70 design: Tilting screen, Hot Shoe, PASM dial, Pop-up EVF, Aperture+Control Ring (or just a control ring)... The X70 is not bigger than XF70...
They are all pretty compact (yes the X100V slightly bigger, but not that much in my opinion).
Might be my Christmas gift to myself.
Already got a GRIII Street edition, and like it a lot.
That’s a fine Christmas present.
damnn im early
21mm 40mm / 28mm 60mm Pick your poison. 2 fisted street assaults. literally/figuratively (optical finder a real value at 40mm)
Anyone have this camera? Could someone please recommend a lens filter for this camera?
i would be willing to pay USD$2000 if they make this camera, had they added a built in flash. I just don't understand why they don't put a built in flash
Thanks. The camera is of course worth a thought. But as I don't like to carry two cameras in my pocket every day, I would probably leave this one at home...
HI, what apps are you using to check the focal length ?
Got mine on order… awaiting stock coming in.
What app was that you used to calculate the focal distance?
It’s apsc, just half the focal length of the lens and add it on, eg 20mm becomes 30mm
The app he's using might be Hyperfocal Pro.
@@Benjohns89 Thats not what the app is used to calculate.
Hyperfocal Pro.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter i know, he just asked how to work out the focal distance so i was confused lol
Hi great video,! What is the depth of field app you are using in the video? Thanks David
Amazing Gunpowder is always the perfect poser
Does anyone know what’s the cause of the rattling inside the camera when you shake it about? You can’t make statements like 28mm is the best focal length bro. Misleading to beginners.
Its the stabilization. Even a beginner needs to be able to take a joke bro 😎
Get the 40! Or both if you have extra $$!
I can see you getting around with both in your jacket pocket and you don't have to break your 2 Camera rule.
wow you still using the good old nokia 9
Excellent video - thanks, what are your thoughts (from your experience with the camera) about the ease / accuracy, of using Snap Focus, on days without bright light? ….. I imagine their is a significant difference (in favour of the standard GR3) with its inherent greater depth of field, due to the wider lens?
I took a picture with my smartphone and no one was interested.
You showed it to the wrong people.
Great review! What is the App that Mattias uses to calculate depth of field?
Hyper focal pro
Thanks for the great review. I have a question I need to ask. Can you easily damage the lens motor mechanism when you accidentally insert the camera in your pocket while it's on and the lens still not retracted?
Could someone tell me the name of app at 3:00?
can I use it in a humid environment?
Where is that 40$ camera?
+1
All in good times. And I’ve seen it in a store for $30.
Great vid as always!
Funderar starkt på att byta ut min GRIII mot en GRIIIx. Tycker oftast "28mm" är något för brett, och eftersom min favoritkamera är min Minolta CLE med 40mm f/2 så känns det som att GRIIIx är en bättre matchning!
Just curious what you mean when you say 'the much faster Nikon Zfc' - The Zfc is also a crop sensor, same as GR IIIX and X-E4, and the Zfc's 28mm is also an f2.8 (same as the Fuji 27mm) and the GR IIIX. Or am I misunderstanding?
I assumed he meant autofocus vs. the X100V/X-E4
I mean operational speed. From intent to the image.
I we where talking aperture it would be blurry since they are interchangeable.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Ah interesting. I hadn't noticed any sluggishness with the X-E4 so much assume the Zfc is like lightning! Thanks for clarifying
@@ChrisGower Im not talking about that either. Im talking about you needing to make three adjustments on the fuji compare to only one on the Nikon to execute the same command :)
I always like to listen to you talk about anything! My Gr2 fell and the motor that opens the lens broke, it would cost $600 to fix. Is the Gr IIIx and Gr III sturdier than the Gr2?
No they are built very similar
Here we go again, cute Gunpowder picture montage :) I love the super moody landscape captures Matias puts together
Some people just happen to enjoy the focal length more than a 28mm. There is no such thing as a "best all-around focal length" because we all shoot differently. It's a bit condescending to say that we just haven't understood that 28 is what good photographers use. I recently bought a Leica with a fixed 28mm lens and disliked the range so much that I sold it, and that's because it didn't suit my style of street photography.
Its pretty obvious that I’m joking. It’s photography, nothing to be serious about 😀
where's the video on the Z Fc im dying to hear your opinion
It’s coming. I recorded it a couple of weeks ago but never got around to edit. Now I will probably want to redo it :)
3:08 Which app/website was that ?
Gun powder is looking good!
How does the lens adapter work. Does it fall off like the nisi filter kit when switched off or not?
It snaps on and won’t fall off. The lens retracts inside.
Digital Contax T2?
I just wondering, smartphone's standard lens use 28mm-ish equivalent, right? 🤔
Some do, to bad smartphone cameras suck 🏀 ⚽️ 🏈 ;)
@@gearreallydoesntmatter we get what we pay for, I guess :)
Looking forward for your nikon zfc review.
Would you please do a short video to explain the zone focus adjusting you’re doing? Looks like post production on a smartphone?!
And would you rate this above a Sony RX 100 v3 which has a viewfinder, tilt screen AND a flash!
Its the same exact zone focus as the GRiii, just pick a distance or set in manually.
You can post process on a smartphone, raw files as well. Like all Ricohs.
Yes, I don’t like the rx100 all that much.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Thx for reply and info. To each his own. I hate NOT having a viewfinder - old school guy
Depends on the focal length for me.
Would love a ricoh with a built-in flash!
GRii has a flash.
What is the name of the app at 2:52? pls? thank you!
Never mind! got it!
Gunpowder is a QT pie
What are your thoughts on the Ricoh GT-2?
Only tried the gw-2 and it’s excellent.
Awesome! I'm curious, how's the video performance?
Nothing special.
I loved the GRII. I was very underwhelmed by the GRIII, I even bought it a second time earlier this year only to be disappointed a second time. I want to be excited about this, this is the focal length I’ve wanted for a long time. But lets be honest, as much as they say it does, the GRIII does not have phase detection focus; maybe it does physically, but the speed at which it focuses is not that of a camera with phase detection focus. I can’t believe they didn’t fix that with this one. I’m not expecting a sports camera, but it seriously focuses the same as the GRII. Which can be found for half the price.
I hope they don’t, snap is faster anyway so I don’t want the to waste energy on AF.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Fair enough, but with that in mind can we agree that the GRII is a much better value than the third one, as the third one is only bringing to the table (if excluding the upgraded AF) a somewhat stabilized sensor and more megapixels. Not to discount those two things, but I don’t believe it justifies the third one being twice the price of the second.
No we can’t agree on that. I say they are both great value in their own way. The GRii has a flash for example. In my review of the GRiii I list I think 7 improvements of the GRiii that I find very useful. Can’t remember which I listed and there are more.
So buy the one you can afford, as always, you get what you pay for.
My next camera
Thanks for the info as always mate on point .. BTW love the horse photos :)
I want a Ricoh so bad ! Wondering if getting a used gr2 would be worth it. I worry about dust etc being in the lens getting one that old but prob all I can do .
I picked up a GR II for around $400 on OfferUp in 2020, fell in love with it and after 11 or so months with it ended up bumping up to the GR III. I found the newer sensor handles low light grain a lot better (I would typically shoot in bnw in night scenes), but the GR III obviously misses the flash. I'd say go for a well priced GR II and see how it works for you!
@@ChrisGower thank you for the advice ☺️
and the GRll also offers the 4:3 aspect ratio, which was removed from the GRlll. Some people also say that the GRll offers clearer and higher contrast photos.
Thanks Matthias! Excellent points in this video, especially about it being a gateway camera. It has only taken me a few weeks with my grii to realise that 28mm lens with crops to 35mm and 50mm (or beyond) is sensible for most people. Although I use 28 seldom enough that I'd be fine with 35mm equivalent if they made one, the 28 comes in really handy of you use a 35mm optical viewfinder (as I do) and mess up close range composition occasionally.
I hope this sells really well.
I'll probably wait for a griv with flash (hopefully) and Leica style raw file crops that can be uncropped in Lightroom (hopefully) as that would be nearly perfect. But might be tempted by one of these if Ricoh release a small enough ttl and manual flash like the cute fuji 20.
That depends on the photographer. I am not a 28mm guy.
@@Raist3db that was my point though; neither am I. But if you want to use an ovf with a 35-40mm Ricoh GRIII or IIIx, having some room to crop is very useful...although it's laborious having to crop everything in post; that's why it would be perfect to have raw crop files handle like the Leica q2, i.e. you can uncrop them. The 28mm is also useful for some up-close (ish) wide-effect landscapes or indoors in tight spaces.
I've been thinking more and more about a perfect photographer's compact, and I think a pocketable Leica q2/gr iii type camera is an answer, with a 28mm lens that has usable crops. Ricoh grs do this as well really, with very sharp lens and no aa filter helping the crops tremendously. I can use Topaz upscaling on 50mm+ f2.8 portrait crops on the GRII if I need a larger print and they look very sharp and generally great.
😍
what is the app you use for the focal length?
👍👍👍
Bummer. They announced it, gave it to some legit RUclipsrs, but they can't ship them to customers. Global parts shortage is hitting everyone, not much to be done about it. But it's hard to see cool products being announced that can't be delivered to market.
The one I tested is available for everyone to try at Kameradoktorn. It’s a store demo, not a test unit for youtubers.
Shooting with a single press of the shutter release button (Full Press Snap) only works when you set shutter customization to AF+AE Lock. Is this a bug? Does your iiix have this problem?
I almost picked up the the GRiii but it's got no viewfinder. I'm one of those camera up to my eye types.
Nice, but I love the most my setup xe-3 with pancake.
Honestly I wish that lens was fixed and not retractable. That's the weak point on every camera that uses such a design. Needs to be like an X100. I'd buy one in a minute if they fixed that flaw. I don't care about a few inches of thickness.
X100 lens is not fixed. It also moves externally.
I got this, it’s ok, blurry images
I find the street shooter king is the Sony RX10
Not my focal length ... actual 35mm is optimal, wider 28mm with good resolution works fine and you get to crop ... anything tighter than 35 and I lose creative focus, on occasion I love to use a 50mm on the go with a DLSR, but 40mm is just not versatile enough for the way I love to shoot with a fixed lens.
We are all different. For me 35mm is just bland. Not a wide story teller like 28, nor as versatile as a 50mm.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter My 'go to' lens was always the 28mm. I tried to convince myself that 35mm was best all round, 2 steps back for a 28mm and 2 forward for a 40mm. Of course you can't always do that, and it simply doesn't feel the same in your hand and to your eye. Way back in the day (I'm really old) I had a 28-50 on my 'golden era' Pentax slr. I only ever went directly from 28 to 50 and nothing in between, but 28mm was and is still 'it' for me. Thanks for the channel appreciate your time.
If they could somehow make the lens fixed rather than retracting, even if it adds a bit more heft, the GR line would be perfect. I’m always worried about the mechanism tiring out or just dying. There’s also the well lamented dust issue. It’ll also lend it self to being a bit more rugged on hikes, bike trips and wet days. And finally, a couple centimetres in thickness could make way for a bigger battery. Not too fussed about the tilt screen though. Maybe a GR 3 Rugged Edition 😎
I returned my ricoh gr iii. It's super cool, but I want it as am everyday camera/family camera. The auto focus, especially inside, just didn't do it for tracking a little kid. Even snap focusing was tough, for me anyway.
Snap will always be faster than any tracking AF you can find. Just needy to practice using it.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I figure as much. It just didn't do it for me as much as I wish it did. My wife also really didn't like it, and that's a big factor. I do actually think I'll try it again, but maybe once the baby is a little older.
Is the wheel not as jumpy?
I’ve never experienced any jumping wheels on any of them. But all the controls are the same.
The Zfc looks beautiful. 😍 Any idea when will we see your review of the Nikon Zfc?
Before the year is out I hope :)
hugely over priced....no thanks
Noted
I also noticed the high price, like all new products from Ricoh/Pentax (K-3lll, D-FA21mm lens, etc.). it seems to me that Ricoh wants to find out what high prices people are willing to pay for their products. I also don't understand why the GRlllx is more expensive than the GRlll.
Fujifilm X70 ;-)
Also nice. A few tweaks and it could probably match a GR but Fuji seems to have abandoned the attempt.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter shame, would be nice to see new gen x70.
f2.8, what a shame
One of the key aspects of this camera is that it’s APS-C and pocketable. They aren’t going to change that any time soon.
Plenty of non pocketable or small sensored cameras out there already. No point in trying to compete with them.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter ok, I understand your point, but why don't you consider small canon cams, m200 for example, it can be used with fast 22mm lense. Is it all about build quality?
Its much bigger, no ibis but most of all not a leaf shutter. And obviously the optical quality of the lens is much much worse. If Ricoh made such compromises they might as well make it an interchangeable lens camera. And then they’ve lost the successful concept altogether.
I’ve had the M with the 22mm, it’s nice.
@@BecaTosha good luck fitting that into a pocket! The point of the GR is to be an every day carry camera with great image quality that you bring with you even when you don't plan on shooting.
No EVF! How do you compose in bright sunlight? An expensive and dated cult camera for GR addicts. Give me a Lumix LX100ii any day.
The LX100ii is to slow for my taste. No issues in the sun for me, I just shoot like normal.
The LX100ii looks great, but does it fit in your trouser pocket every day so that you are happy to take it with you everywhere?
Unlike most of the Sony RX100s and Canon GXs, Ricoh GRs have a hotshoe that you can use for an optical viewfinder. After some trial and error, I am getting very good with 'pinpoint af', i.e. the smallest possible centre spot af point, and you can then see the scene pretty much like an slr with a few caveats regarding focus and composition. The focusing can be solved by either checking the LCD or snap focus, and the composition can be fixed with practice, and/or using a tighter crop viewfinder.
Had it for a few years, small, very versatile, well build, but started to hate the output quality, just the overall look and feel of the images, after I purchased a Fujifilm to replace it with ...
@@jamescooke5063 “pinpoint af” won’t be any easier to do with 40mm instead of 28mm.
It won’t be much harder either.
