    We are taking a look at and comparing two of the best, highest quality, NATO straps currently available. At the $40 price point we have the fantastic PhenomeNato Strap and coming in at $185 we are comparing it to the Omega Nato Strap. Both are outstanding straps, but which one is the best bang for your buck?

    Hi!
    Thank you for this great review ;)
    some of my comments:
    -Yes, I'm planning new colors, I really hope they will be ready much sooner then summer ;)
    -The Omega strap is ~1.4-1.45mm thick, the PhenomeNato is 1.2mm
    -I designed this buckle, as I wanted a custom sewn-in type buckle. I don't like springbar type buckle on nato strap, as I think it is not as secure. However I'm thinking/looking for (maybe trying to design) a new buckle, but it should be also without a springbar.
    -I'm continously working with the sewing company to find the best/nicest solution, I'm planning to try a thicker thread in a few weeks, when they'll make thr next batch.

    I wear my Omega OEM nato strap on my Omega Diver 300m and I wear it regularly for 3 years now. Very good quality and i'm surprised it doesn't look worn out yet. Still looks as good as it did when I bought the strap at the boutique in 2015. I really like the weaving and stitching on the Omega strap. Really sharp imo. The movable/adjustable keeper is a nice touch too.
    With that, I will probably be giving the PhenomeNato strap a try one day. Great comparison video!

      The Omega nato straps are great, but try a PhenomeNato. It’s very close in quality for much less money.

    I'm torn. The thought of spending almost $200 on a piece of fabric bothers me. But the thought of compromising and not getting a genuine Omega strap for my Speedy Pro bothers me even more.
    It's a stupid amount of money to spend on a strap, I'll admit that, but at the end of the day I'm fine with that. Cry once and then enjoy it for years to come.

    Fantastic review, Your review actually pushed me way over to the omega side, while the difference from a basic use may not differ much, your video showed a huge difference between the two in regards to quality. Those small details really add up to a better product. Yeah $200 sucks, but I can see the extra thought and care.

    I was a parachute rigger and worked (sewed) with a lot of nylon strapping. To me it looks like the PhenomeNato has a little bit more of a tighter weave compared to the Omega. That's a good thing for Pheno. The way the edging is finished on both straps is a little bit different. The Omega looks better with it's diagonal weave along the edges while the edges of the Pheno once again looks tighter but "plain". Could this cause the Omega Nato to snag on something easier? Don't know for sure, maybe? The sewing definitely looks a little higher end on the Omega as they do a better job of overlapping the stitching one single stitch at a time with a heavy duty sewing machine. Neither one is hand stitched as there is no need for that. I think the only way I'd get the Omega is if I owned othe brand and felt I had to have it. Probably would go with the Omega NATO on a Moonwatch but everything else I'd go with the Pheno. Oh, one last thing. I like how the Omega logo buckle can be removed with a pin pusher. Pheno should do this so with some models so if someone want to put a Rolex buckle on their strap they can easily do it.

      Good points. My job also invovles sewing, I do agree the stitching on the Omega strap seems more "premium". The thread looks thicker and they've done a good job hiding the ends of the stitching (on the PhenomeNato you can kind of see burned threads here and there)

    Really enjoyed this review thanks. Is it worth mentioning the case and packaging that the straps come with, admittedly you want something great for your wrist but I know Omega supply the strap with a very high quality case and box. This matters to some.

    My Phenome is my favorite...right up there with my Tudor although they are completely different. PLUS, Phenome has brushed or polished hardware, 2 different lengths, HD versions (thicker) on some models. Omega straps are way too long but the fabric is amazing and super comfortable....but so is the Phenome. I bought one as soon as they came out and it’s perfect.

    The best reason to buy the omega nato is that your watch has an odd numbered lug width. Omega nato straps are actually 19.5 and 21.5mm wide. That is why on the website they are described as 19-20mm and 21-22mm. This covers lugs from 19-21mm. This is exactly the problem with phenomenaton, haveston, blushark, crown and buckle etc- they all make even number width natos and thereby dont cater to odd numbered lug width watches. But they will fit perfectly if you have even numbered lugs whereas the omega nato will always misfit by 0.5mm which actually isnt noticeable or they wouldnt have done it like that. While omega make a nato in both even and odd numbered widths, its only the one with leather as you cant compress leather and make it fit without noticing whereas with nylon etc you dont notice the 0.5mm compression. Having said this, omega owners now face the dilemma of accepting a $185 misfitting yet best quality strap, or buying a $40 strap thats basically as good but fits perfectly

    @ 11:27, if I had to choose between the straps, that frame alone makes the phenomenato look way better, textile wise. It just really stood out to me there with what looks like a higher thread count and better sheen

    They always compare Phenomenato as the perfect alternative to Omega’s OEM but is it measured exactly 20mm or like Omega’s 19.5 to fit both 18 and 20mm. Can you please measure it for me? Thanks!

  • @steven3379

    Tbh the Omega Nato isnt just slightly better its noticably better. Better buckle, logo on buckle and keeper, tighter hole tolerances, better stitching, perhaps better looking weave pattern. But comparing price for price the Phenom is better value meaning the quality to price ratio is better than Omegas. If the Omega strap went for say $60-80 id pick that one any day of the week given im wearing it on a luxury watch. The phenom is a good budget alternative but saying its same quality or just slightly less quality than the Omega is not being honest to Omega strap tbh.

    One of the key purposes of a NATO strap is security. (before people insisted on turning it into some kind of luxury good) The removable buckle on the Omega strap really compromises this. Obviously made for the boardroom adventurer. Phenomenato is my strong preference. I like the quality of the Blushark offerings, but they're too short.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 лет назад

      Excellent point on the buckle. I didn’t realize until the owner of Phenome pointed it out that his strap’s buckle doesn’t use a spring bar. That’s a nice feature. I just wish the Phenome buckle was a little more substantial. It’s not bad but it’s pretty thin.

    • @patrickkelly5590
      @patrickkelly5590 6 лет назад +1

      I agree, the buckle could be a bit heftier, as well as a bit less pointy, but by and large Phenom is the best value in NATO's.

    • @mosk11tto

    I have a couple of the Omega natos, to go with my Omega watch. I wanted OEM. But i also have blu shark, watch gecko, etc..which i like as well. But it is nice to have the omega nato on the omega watch. And for the price of the watch, $185 strap isn't crazy.. I personally wouldn't buy the Omega Strap for my SKX though.. I'm wearing a BluShark Alpha (New Bond) right now. They are the best I've seen, and the only NATOs I wear. I've never seen a P-strap, but if it's as good as a Blu, then it must be something. I think that the Omega strap costs $180 primarily because it says "Omega". If I were wearing a 5-thousand dollar watch, then a $200 NATO is not out of line. But even the Blancpain Bond NATO is only $35. So what is Omega trying to prove?

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 лет назад +1

    One thing you didn't mention: My Omega Speedmaster Co-Axial has a lug width of 21mm and Phenomenato doesn't offer 21mm straps. I do have a Phenomenato for another watch and they are definitely wonderful straps. If they made a 21mm (Hi Akos) I'd buy it for sure.

    $180 or even $100 for a nato is nuts. However, the things you pointed out as being slightly better on the Omega are not slightly. They are easily 50% better. If it was one thing, fine. But when its several things, these start to be noticed easily by the naked eye and not super zoomed video. So given that I think even $40 is pushing it for a piece of nylon and some metal, I would put the Omega at $60-$70 if the PhenomeNato is at $40. Thank you for the review. I enjoy your thoroughness.

If you ever find that it wears off just heat it just a little bit with a lighter and because the strap is made out of nylon it will melt and it will be like brand new.

    Omega is just a little bit better in all little things. The buckle is better, the keepers are thicker and more rounded on the sides, holes are cleaner cut and did you see the way the nylon slips out of that keeper, oh so silky. That makes it better overall, and for people who have Omega watches.

    I have the Omega NATO and I agree it is the best one on the market. The high cost is the main drawback so if the Phenome straps are very close that would be a great alternative to the overpriced Omega ones. From what I can see in your vid the Phenome straps are very very similar. I wonder if the same manufacturer makes both? Great review, thanks but you reviewers got the word out on this strap maker so much that now their sold out of 20mm sizes lol. Newsflash. Phenome 20mm is still the majority size out there. I’ve done a few videos on the PhenomeNato. I don’t remember which one I mentioned it in, but yes the shipping time is very long. At least 30 days. But that’s the only negative. I think the straps are one of the best and it’s worth the wait.

  • @barn_ninny
    @barn_ninny 5 лет назад

    I don't own straps from either of these companies, but just looking at the video from your camera, it seemed to me you minimized the differences a bit. The Omega buckle looks *quite a bit* sturdier than the Phenom; not just a little bit. Do you need the buckle to be that sturdy? I dunno. But it looks a good bit sturdier.
    Same with the stitching. The difference was easily noticeable to my eyes. Maybe it doesn't make any functional difference, but people pay a lot of money for the stitching on bespoke suits and Borelli shirts.
    Lastly, the holes on the 2 were visibly different. The Phenom had irregularities around the holes where they had been heat sealed to prevent fraying. I didn't see any of that on the Omega. I own some no-name NATOs, one from Timex (which actually isn't half bad), and others from higher-end brands like BluShark, Crown & Buckle, and Haveston. Those little irregularities can be decidedly noticeable against the skin all day.
    Are those differences worth $145? Not likely. But it did seem to me they were a bit bigger than you made out. At least, they looked bigger on camera.
    Dig your videos. Appreciate the knowledge and work that goes into them.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  5 лет назад +1

      Technically the phenome buckle is sturdier in that it’s 1 piece, where as the Omega buckle uses a spring bar. The Phenome is much less likely to break or fail in that regard. But the Omega is bulky and just nicer looking.

  • @leofcpm

    Ok, let's talk about facts. An Omega is a luxury watch, if you buy one you are not only interested in its quality, but also in the brand itself, you want to project an image of accomplishment, something that tells other people about yourself and your tastes. Therefore, the Omega Nato strap is also a luxury item, it carries the brand's symbol, name and quality standards. If you buy an Omega watch and use a cheap nato strap for it, you'll be basically buying a Ferrari and using Volkswagen wheels... Does it sound reasonable at all?

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 лет назад +1

      My guess is that a lot of people would buy an Omega watch, which comes with one of their Nato straps (like the Speedmaster), and never even take the OEM strap out of the package - and instead use a high quality aftermarket strap like this PhenomeNato. In a world were watch collectors are obsessed with the "box, papers, complete set" mentality I would think it's that's a very common practice.

      For collectors perhaps... They will barely even use the watches they buy anyway. But for those who aren't watch aficionados, they will most likely be interested in simply exhibiting their watches for status.

    The Omega strap is ideal for the status-conscience, one with no consideration with respect to cost.

    I agree that £120 for a nato is ridiculously expensive, but tbh why would anyone buy one unless it was to go on your Omega.
    I am getting one for my Seamaster, but I couldn't justify spending that on a nato, so I asked Father Christmas to bring me one. Better than socks I think.

      Definitely better than socks, and it’s ok to get one to have for your Omega even if they’re overpriced.

    Why do people put natos on expensive watches, wouldn’t it be better to wear those watches on leather or a bracelet?
    Are people more concerned about ruining a good leather watch band than messing up a $3,000 Watch????

      I think some people just like the style and aesthetic of a NATO. I prefer them to leather straps if I wasn't going to wear a watch on a bracelet.

      I guess the way I see NATO bands is that they are made for those occasions where you want to wear a watch in harsh conditions like water or doing some manual labor that might damage an expensive bracelet or ruin a leather band. So I can understand if someone puts a NATO on a less expensive watch like a Seiko, Orient, Hamilton that will be beaten around. But when I see an expensive watch matched with a NATO I don’t see the purpose. why would anyone expose their expensive watch to harsh conditions. But then again it comes down to style like you said.

      That's fair, but I wear my watches on a NATO when I want to drop weight and increase comfort mainly, and alternatively to change up the look/feel of the watch.

      I want a NATO strap if I go diving or an odd place with my expensive watch, since NATO straps is secured against failing spring bars.
