No one ever talks about eating unhealthy food or really and truly discuss gluttony. I was appalled when I found out the word means eating more than you need. Being severely overweight is really bad for our health but that’s the elephant in the room that’s never discussed.

Hi Marilyn - so the whole ‘health’ issue and concern with diets and such - were more of a SDA and LDS concern here in modernity. And more ancient is the Roman Catholic Church ‘Seven Deadly Sins’… where gluttony is certainly called out. In Holy Orthodoxy - our evening prayers definitely cause us to recall and repent ‘if we have eaten too much’. But, these ancient liturgical prayers aren’t rooted in emotionalism and many in Pentecost can’t see their worth… but they definitely call out and make one consider their ways.
Medicinal / Juridical - between these two tensions I believe is appropriate… I strive to lean towards medicinal in my approach to understanding the redemptive work performed in my life… and in that understanding - I believe God works out ‘unto all pleasing’ - and gently instructing and correcting and leading me to all truths.
I believe we all have work to do in the arena of ‘temple maintenance’. Healthy eating and taking care of ourselves is good and appropriate while journeying in the life below.
Improper anything is out of order… but. As you said - calling out obesity and eating unhealthy foods - is the calling on folks to address the elephant in the room.
And for the record - I am overweight… and I working on this at the moment and bringing this into subjection. I recognize my diet was improper. And to date, I am 30 pounds lighter - and have about another 40 to go.

Just to point out scripture…Jesus called out pharisees for speaking that he was a glutton.
Now…. If you do research you will find gluttony is not just food.
Also, genetics, physical and mental health play a part in a lot of people’s physical condition.
The fact that you decided to come at people as you’re obese so you must be a glutton and sinning.
I pray for the mercy of Jesus over you.
As I don’t have an eat sweets problem. I have a pancreas issue and so much more. I don’t eat a lot. I’m writhing in pain. I am morbidly obese.
My cousin born the same year is anorexic thin but not by choice.
She has a similar condition and it can either make you skinny or obese.
Stop being judgmental. You never know a persons situation.
      That is all.

@@Acts238-39I totally agree with you. So many people do not have compassion and just say things that are hurtful. Nobody knows more about being overweight than the person that is and so many times there are other issues at play. Many overweight people eat less food then skinny people and until you’ve walked in someone else’s shoes a person should be very careful what they say or the looks they give others. Remember a good rule is always look at everyone with compassion you just don’t know what someone is going through.

Pretty good teaching here - in Orthodox Christianity - we collectively are vegan every Wednesday and Friday - in remembrance of Christ’s betrayal and Christ’s crucifixion…. We also have four - 40ish day fast periods where we are vegan…. These fasting exercises do not save us - but they do help us to align our lives and tame our passions. We work out together as a community our souls’ salvation.
In my local parish - we have some people who are coming from an Islamic background - and knowing this - I do not offer them pork if they are over. I also identify if there is any pork product any dish that I make for our Agape meals post Divine Liturgy where we eat as a community every Sunday. And we phase out to Vegan often - so we all comply to the standard and make our dishes accordingly. It really causes one to be mindful of what one is eating.

@@tto7365 - thanks for sharing your opinion. Unlike the Protestant fronema (mindset in Greek) which includes UPCI and other off shoots in the Fractured West from the True Faith - we view our salvation in Christ God as ‘worked out in Community’. What you are so quickly dismissing in what I perceive as arrogance - is part of our spiritual disciplines. I would fathom it would be along the lines of a UPCI pastor calling for the local church he ministers to to a collective fast for all the congregants to join together. If I recall correctly, this did happen on occasion when I was part of the rank and file of several UPCI churches and within different Districts. So I ask you, is it a man made rule when it is asked by a UPCI preacher - or is it somehow suddenly ‘spiritual’. In my opinion, perhaps it is wiser to seek to understand things better and inform oneself before commenting. We also have prayer rules… fasting rules… modesty rules… and a whole bunch of things that we submit ourselves to in the liberty of Christ God produced in His righteousness alone and enabled by His grace already present in our lives - dying out daily to his good and perfect will.

This has long been a part of Orthodoxy. Hope you’re well. Be encouraged.

Christian liberty, as understood by the Bible, refers to the freedom that believers have in Christ. It is the freedom from the bondage of sin and the law, obtained through faith in Jesus Christ. The concept is derived from passages such as Galatians 5:1, which states, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free."
Christian liberty is not a license to live according to our own desires or to indulge in sinful behavior. Rather, it is a freedom to live in accordance with God's will and to love and serve others. It involves being free from the burden of trying to earn salvation through our own efforts, as we are saved by grace through faith.
In exercising Christian liberty, believers are called to live in love, following the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the teachings of Jesus. It means using our freedom responsibly, considering the impact of our choices on others and seeking to honor God in all that we do. Christian liberty is ultimately about living in the freedom that comes from being in a relationship with Jesus and allowing his transforming power to shape our lives.

Assertion: “ALL Pentecostals handle snakes… and drink deadly things.” And knowing the the UPCI does NOT do these things - I think you would be generally offended to be lumped together with folks who say they’re Pentecostal … but they believe in a way unlike you do. My point here is that oftentimes UPCIers tend to lump ALL Trinitarians in a single group - as if all folks who say they’re ‘trinitarian’ believe exactly the same way.
As a Classical trinitarian - I have been told here in these forums what UPCIers have been told that I believe…. All parrot-phrasing and regurgitating what they wrongly *assert* I believe.
It isn’t Christian liberty to try and take Christ-God away from folks who do not believe exactly as you do … it’s prideful flesh cloaked as spirituality.
Where does the wind blow? Where does it come from? And where does it go? Are you suddenly a ‘Pentecostal Pocahontas’ where you can ‘see the colors of the Wind’?
To assert that I believe in three gods is quite ludicrous… Father. Son. Holy Spirt. One in Essence and Undivided. This little phrase swats down this incorrect claim. To say I don’t know who Christ God is - places one in a position of all knowing - and that special knowledge is akin to the first heresy that attacked the glorious Church - Gnosticism.
If you have the Godhead all figured out… then you perhaps you’re greater than the Apostles… who said of this Godhead - as a great mystery.
It’s not like I am using a black magic highlighter - and lining out / redacting Deut 6:4… the Shema - and oddly all the ‘Oneness’ scriptures often cited to ‘prove me wrong’ - are all found to support the symbol of the Common Faith - the Nicene Creed. And I am certainly not lining out the Logos in John 1 … And I also see precisely where the Trinity is revealed in Scriptures - the Theophany … and I don’t have to do a twisty dance about how the Scripture is worded… and John touched a bit more on the Logos in his general epistles - the three that record in heaven.
The Orthodox Church in her Wisdom - doesn’t ask of folks their opinions of her Christ-God - her Teachings and her Traditions - that were handed down by the Apostles and preserved for perpetuity.
There is one saving name - manifested by Christ-God. And out of His precious side on Calvary - His Church was created.

@@Republican_Banana - thanks for your response. In Holy Orthodoxy, there are two systems - cathedral and monastics. I, for one, wear a beard - but I chose to keep it neatly groomed albeit it fairly long - and I wear my hair short. I am not convinced this is a ‘heaven or hell issue’ as I am sure folks in the UPCI camp may take.

Within the UPCI, in my observation, exercising one's christian liberty can have it's problems. In some cases, Oneness apostolics are known to comment and judge other denominational christians because of doctrine, ferociously defending Oneness against Trinity. I'm not speaking of having debate or questions, which many of us do, but seeing how easy it is actually accuse others (who can't understand the Oneness doctrine) of being WRONG, of worshipping 3 gods, of not knowing who Jesus truly is, and in spiritual danger because of it. This is wrong, imo. But only God is sovereign, so God forgive me if I am wrong here.
Those remarks "are stumblingblocks that fall in a brother's way. Again, each individual searching scripture, like the Bereans, is necessary, but it should be done in order, and not posted half-hazardly on the internet, youtube for everyone and his dog to give an opinion and just confuse us even more. It creates an attitude of judgment to those who don't comply with the Oneness doctrine. Teachings on someone's opinion or special revelation are 'permissible' I suppose, but are they spiritually lawful? Do they act as a stumblingblock to those outside the church, who may come onto the internet and see how so many disagree? That is a stumblingblock to those who may need to hear JUST the gospel and feel God's mercy and jforgiveness. Doctrinal disputations don't set the captives free.
Does this Christian liberty to believe in the Godhead a certain way, and persuade trinitarian christians that their way of understanding is totally and completely wrong? Is is a provision to the flesh? The "I'm right and you're wrong spirit". If someone feels convinced in their minds then fine. But we forget that we can all stumble and pride can get in, and cause even ourselves to stumble. To accuse Trinitarians of believing in three gods? Of course, you all have the liberty as described in the bible, but is it effective to helping others come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? "Romans 14:1 "Him that is weak in the faith, receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations."
