All in the Family is a timeless classic! I was a young kid when this show was on, my parents were always cracking up! Real comedy, with today's supersensitivity a show like this would get cancelled in a second! So glad I grew up when things were normal! As I got older and reruns we're always on I knew why my parents loved this show! I don't envy young people, today's society is so messed up!

This show is timeless and halarious, so many of us grew up watching these timeless shows from the 70's, will never be the same funny wise! Peace to you.........
Same. I know I'm a year late to the party, but I specifically dislike Michael. The older I get, the more I agree that Archie was the most realistic one in the house. Now we have insane left wing policies and everyone thinks they're a victim. Women absolutely should stay home to raise their children if possible. Archie saw what would happen if feminism went too far, and it has, and he was damn right!
Mike was a jerk. He treated Gloria badly. It is always frustrated me that she worked to put him through college. She should have been going to college to pursue a degree.
I was about 10 when this show was on once a week, we loved watching this, Archie was a pretty regular character type back then, it was a different era, I knew many adults just like Archie or very similar.
The best smackdown of Meathead came from Lionel Jefferson, "Why don't we ever talk about the weather, black people have weather, too!" Meathead was so condescending.
I can understand mike not working when he was in college trying to get his degree but even before that he should of got a job. Gloria worked at the same department store even when she was pregnant with their son, when they fired her because of her condition she protested and got her job back, her and her father was the only breadwinners of the family I can't say anything about poor Edith she was a homemaker and volunteered at the sunshine home.
Be correct. Mike by then had graduated and gotten a job at the college as an instructor, in effect never leaving the ivory tower. But at least he was supporting his growing family. I can well imagine the pay, considering the cost of living ca. 1975 in Queens, NYC, was measly, and likely the Jeffersons gave the Stivics a break on the rent to help get them out from under Archie's house. Although Archie and George had their differences, they respected each other.
And Edith was one of the most loved...........Norman Lear did his homework. The episode where the Bunkers get robbed by Demond Wilson and Cleavon Little spotlights that. The robbers make jokes about both Archie and Mike, but they love Edith.
There was one scene when he gets his final grades, and he was only taking three classes. My God, there are students taking five classes while holding down full time jobs!
"All in the Family" creator Norman Lear modeled the Archie-Mike relationship on his difficulties with his own father. Early in the show's run, there was an episode in which Archie called Mike "the laziest white man I ever seen." Mr. Lear, Sr., who acted a lot like Archie, said that to Norman. The younger Mr. Lear said "And we were a middle-class JEWISH family!"

If all in the family was today Archie probably wouldn’t be able to find a good union job that would pay enough to support his family and a mearhead! He would probably be working for minimum wage and Edith would have to work also! We have gone backwards in the last 50 years!
Wah...wah...WAH. Archie would find a way to adequately support his family. In the last few years of AITF, segueing into "Archie's Place", he left the plant with the frequent layoffs and being treated like dirt for running Kelsey's Bar once the latter decided to retire. It wasn't an easy go for Arch at first, but he did well over time, especially as he learned to get along with bartender Harry and took on a partner.
I remember when Archie came home from work and said, "Oh what a day" and Edith had a beer for him. And then Gloria came home, and pretty much said the same thing and her mom brought her a beer. The the Meathead came home from school, I suppose, and started whining about something and Gloria told him to shut up as she was legit tired from "selling milk baths to fat cows" and little did I know that she was talking about my future just a few years hence, except that thank gawd I wasn't married to some bum.
Because Archie knew he wasn't a man simply chasing dreams and failing to face reality....ppl would hate this msg today but it's still true till this day
Yes, he could have, rather than spend time and effort on those radical causes which gave him that snotty air of moral superiority. Reminds of the words of the Apostle Paul: "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel" (I Tim 5:8).
He'd taken a teaching job in California (UCSB?), he, Gloria, and little Joey moving away. When the Bunkers came out several months later to visit for Christmas, although Mike's job seemed to be fine, the Stivics had separated. It was at that visit that they decided to reconcile, but with the events of a later episode of "Archie's Place", to set up the short-lived "Gloria" show, it turns out that Mike was out of work (didn't get tenure?), and he'd run off to live on a hippie commune with one of his former students, effectively abandoning Gloria and Joey. Gloria should have gotten one stiff court order when he was employed for alimony and child support and, if he shirked his responsibilities, had his lazy ass thrown in jail.
My son went to woik, paid off his own car, moved out at 18, went to college AND woiked. Got his own place and now he has great credit and a degree. Meathead couldn't handle college and woik.
Looking back on this show just let's you know that America started the collapse in the 70s. People like Mike are all over the place now & we're all collapsing because of them.
Actually, that's a lie that Rob Reiner tries to keep alive. Truth is, Carroll O'Connor often said in old interviews he was not a liberal. Once he even told Newsweek Magazine, "I never had any use for liberals. They're ineffectual and always have been."
Not sure any of you actually watched the show. Mike wasn’t a lazy freeloader. He and Gloria had a plan. He would go to school and get a degree to get a high paying job. Gloria worked but didn’t pay for all of Mike’s schooling. He got scholarships and fellowships (for his master’s) that helped. When things got tight, Mike got part time jobs to help out. I think the agreement was that when he got a job, he would pay for Gloria’s education. They weren’t living rent free necessarily. In multiple episodes it was discussed that mike would pay Archie back for the cost of food and living there once he graduated and started working. That was always the agreement with Archie. They tried leaving and getting their own place multiple times but Edith didn’t want either of them to leave and thought it was best for both if they lived with them. “Lazy and unemployed” was the running joke and set up the conflict between Archie and Mike. Yes, he teases, jokes, and argues with Mike about going to college but deep down he is proud of him and a little sad and jealous. Archie never got that opportunity because he had to take care of his family growing up so he ever finished high school. This plays out in multiple episodes. Mike and Gloria do eventually move out and rent the Jefferson’s house next door when they have Joey. Mike is teaching undergraduate classes while going through grad school. Mike graduates and does get a great job in California so he and Gloria move there.
Actually, for many seasons while Mike was going to school, he wasn't working at all. Countless people did and do both. Mike was clearly living off Archie and later, also Gloria when she started working. Mike also never got part-time jobs to help out (hence Mike never reacting to the jabs Archie gave him with "I have a job"), just twice temporarily as a brief plot device: a) when Mike temped at a gas station to give money to Archie, after Archie was angry Mike gave inheritance money to the McGovern campaign, a job that disappeared the very next episode, with Mike even stating that job was only just to give Archie the same amount he gave McGovern; and b) tutoring a kid when Archie was on strike, which was hardly a real job. Now, of course logically one can't have Mike on the show for eight seasons (left after S8) and not have him eventually finish school and get a real job and career, but the truth is, yes, for a very long time, Mike was a lazy freeloader.
He got one job one time because Archie guilted him into it..He didn't pay for her education or pay archie back. Sounds like YOU are the one who never watched the show
Mike NEVER got a job to help out!! He only got a job AFTER college and he gave Archie Nothing! Then he left Gloria and little Joey. He was a free loading bum!
Just out of curiosity, did Michael ever pay Archie back all the back rent he promised to pay him? In the show, Michael stated that he was keeping a record of all the back rent that he owed Archie and was going to pay him back “every cent.” However, when he got his job and moved his family out to California, I don’t remember that ever happened. And then he left his wife and son to live in a commune. Was it ever said in the show that he paid Archie back, or did he renege on his promise?
Archie originally said that Mike and Gloria could live with him and Edith without paying till after he graduated college. Therefore, Archie should not keep bothering Mike about the fact that he doesn't work yet. And freeloading.
My mom keeps getting annoyed that I keep "sticking up for Meathead" when all I do is remind her that it's Gloria's fault that Mike lives rent-free in the first place xD now I just keep doing it to see the look on mom's face lol but seriously! He was gonna quit school and go to work and Gloria got upset; yeah the Meathead should keep his mouth shut sometimes but damn xD Gloria just gets away with everything lol
Which is precisely why Gloria & Meathead were actually made for each other. They were both passive-aggressive liberal wacko birds of a feather, each living off each other’s EXCUSES.
50 years later and nothing has changed for know it all college kids. They have all the answers to the worlds problems!

Mike NEVER got a job to help out!! He only got a job AFTER college and he gave Archie Nothing! Then he left Gloria and little Joey. He was a free loading bum!
Archie is a classic he hates freeloaders!!!! Show was the best!!
Leftists never change.
Amen !!!!! Only gotten worse !
In the early years of the show, Meathead had Nixon Derangement Syndrome.
Sure they do, they get worse every year.
thank goodness.
So is right wing.
Art imitating life
Liberals never change...
and never will
Once in awhile, after suffering under their own ideology, they wake up, grow up, and become conservative.
Turned out he wasn’t acting
Archie originally said that Mike and Gloria could live with him and Edith without paying till after he graduated college. Therefore, Archie should not keep bothering Mike about the fact that he doesn't work yet. And freeloading.
4:47 this really annoys me seeing this lazy pinko lay around doing nothing
Lmao… Archie with his sick burns on Meathead.
He was a bum
@@lenforstell1139 right though? lol it took me a while to notice it, not gonna lie xD
Mike: "Gloria said she'd stop by on her way from work."
Archie: "I wish YOU could say you'd stop by on your way from work."
Just saw Rob Reiner on the Beverly Hillbillies as one of Jethro's hippie friends lol.
5:41 Rip van Meathead, IM DONE
Archie was hilarious!
Best show ever lol!
