Before Alan came to PC it was established that he'd been a surgeon and it's how he knew Rick. Alan had hurt his hand and used the recovery time to fundraise and had raised $$ for the cardiac wing that he built at GH. Then he fell for Monica and stayed in PC. But she betrayed him soon enough with Rick, then Alan damaged his prominent hand permanently while trying to kill Rick and Monica and became an internist. He got his hand fixed in 1997 - but things happened and he never was able to return to surgery but was COS as Steve Hardy had died.
I wish Soapnet would do another Alan and Monica marathon. I didn't have that channel when they did it the first time.:(
