The late great Jeff Porcaro is one of the best grove and feel drummer ever. His most famous grove is the shuffle from Rosanna. But my favorite song is Gaucho from Steely Dan. The ghost notes on that song will give you chills. Also check out the song Lido Shuffle from Bog Skaggs. He also played with Michale McDonald and Michael Jackson, but is most know for his work with Steely Dan and Toto.

Glad you spoke about Jeff Porcaro. He is a drum legend (sadly, disturbingly taken MUCH too soon from us [back in 1992] 😭😭😭😥).
Jeff is, rightfully, a legend in the music community and esp. among drummers. He was, not only extremely skilled and talented, he was generous and helpful to young players coming-up after him ...as well as to players on sessions. One of the true greats. No question at all. 🤘🤘
If you, really, want to hear Jeff rip, check out Steely Dan's "Night By Night" (on the Pretzel Logic album). A 19-year-old Porcaro is called-in to track this killer groove and (reportedly) plays it down in a single take.
[I believe I left you a long piece re: the history of Steely Dan and how it began as a full band, but beginning with Pretzel Logic, became, solely: Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, along with Roger Nichols (the sound engineer GENIUS!) and " whoever they called in to play parts." -...I won't reiterate it here ...but: You should be aware... It is more involved than one would think! - Anyway: It was durimg the recording of and touring for the Pretzel Logic album which these began to take place.
    - "Skunk" Baxter leaving and joining The Doobie Brothers, et al. .... - You ought to read it when you get a chance, Chod. 👍👍]
    - All of the members of Toto were studio musicians before forming Toto (a bit "on a whim," really...) - except for the lead-singer, that is (he was not ...and he remains one of my LEAST favorite all time vocalists!!!!! -Although, on THIS song ["Hold The Line"] he does serve it up pretty well. 👍👍 (This is, BY FAR, my favorite Toto song, ever! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥).
The major components of Toto were the 2 (then: 3) Porcaro brothers [Jeff (of course) on drums; Steve on keyboards (although he is, usually, thought of as "second fiddle" to Paich, within Toto ...this is a simplification, at best and in many ways: a fallacy.) ans, later: Mike - bass [after David Hungate departed the band/was forced out] ]
    and David Paich: keyboards.
[Jeff Porcaro and Mike Porcaro together is one of the best rock rhythm sections you'll ever experience. No question. (Just to differentiate for the standard/jazz rhythm section, when most people talk about "rhythm section" ...they, basically have NO clue, but, also: in rock bands, while keyboards are often included, they do not function in the same manner as in jazz, so the traditional rhythm section [bass, drums, piano] is cut-down to, only: bass and drums (when referred to in the vernacular). -Just "f.y.i.") ]
    - The most intriguing piece of trivia (which most people. STILL, aren't aware of!) re: this band, *I think!* is that: While recording Toto IV (The album with their massive hits: "Africa" and "Rosanna" on it!), the band in fact, had "a day job!"
[Between "Hold The Line" - the debut single off of their debut album; and the hits that came with Toto IV, this band was, really, not successful. No big hits (or hits, to SPEAK of, at ALL!) or "radio staple airplay" songs, whatsoever.]
...Toto's "day job" during the recording of Toto IV??:
Being Quincy Jones' "house band" and recording m,j.'s Thriller album. That's right!
...on a large# of the tracks on Thriller, you are hearing Toto playing. 👍👍(Yes: other musicians were brought in for certain songs or certain parts, but the core of Toto were tracking for Quincy, every day and, then, going off to write, arrange or record for: Toto IV, at night!. 👍)
[one more "slight aside" 😋: The name "Toto" does NOT come from/has nothing to do with: Dorothy's dog from "The Wizard Of Oz." Nope.
It comes, instead, from the "legalese" term (it is, commonly, now, only used in law ...or, perhaps, in literature...)/expression, from the classic Latin: the phrase: "in toto,"
meaning/referring to: "in total," "completely" or "absolutely".
Best translation (sans any context) I would say would be: "in total" or "in full."
...And there you have that, then. 😜🤘🤘]

Man...What can I say about Toto....when we .... i heard Toto....it was like the second coming of the gods of Rock n' Roll...Making them "The New gods of Rock n' Roll. In the 80's we experienced The New Wave of Rock n' Roll gods......that's why trhe music critics called the 80's music "New Wave" music....because it was....it was creative with R & B, House music, Rap music, Blues, Jazz, World music, & Country music all mixed into one music vibe.....and we LOVED it!!! The Porcaro brother were so talented. Steve Porcaro wrote Michael Jackson’s Human Nature, I know other members of Toto played on too many songs to count. Toto had world class musicians and vocalists. Go on down the rabbit hole. But after you listen to Hold The Line, Africa and Rosanna there are other great songs to react to. Goodbye Girl and I’ll Supply The Love with Bobby Kimball on lead vocals are bangers. I’ll Be Over You (with Michael McDonald on backing vocals) and Georgy Porgy (with Cheryl Lynn) are both smooth and sexy with amazing guitarist Steve Lukather on lead vocals. These are must haves on your Toto journey. Thanks for this reaction!

Please do some more Jethro Tull. They have a couple dozen albums and their work from 1969 - 1979 is particularly good. Try 'With You There to Help Me' from their 'Benefit' album. It is just before they completely blew up and became famous with their 'Aqualung' and 'thick as a Brick' albums. Both of which are extraordinary, but also very saturated in the reaction scene. The song you did 'Locomotive Breath' is from 'Aqualung' and is awesome, but hearing a couple songs that are right at their break-out era is special.

    You mentioned Smooth Criminal.
Connection here is that Steve Lukather from Toto played guitar on Michael Jackson’s Beat It.

If you want to hear more Jeff Porcaro in different context, plese try "When I Need You " - Leo Sayer, "Lowdown" - Boz Scaggs from which there's also an official 70's live with Jeff, "Mr. Briefcase" - Lee Ritenour, :)

Hope you'll get into some early Fleetwood Mac, before Nicks and Buckingham... like "Station Man", "Bare Trees", "Tell Me All The Things You Do", "Hypnotized"... and for something completely different Les McCann and Eddie Harris live at Montruex doing "Compared To What".
