Watching this cinematic does two things: 1 seeing this from the perspective of Marius you realize how terrifying the prime evils are - giving a sense of reality to the scene and a point of reference for the viewer. 2 The viewer is made to feel justifiably sorry for Marius. For the first time since the game began you realize how out of depth Marius is - he’s being asked to contend with things no mortal should be able to handle. Of course he wouldn’t follow Diablo to hell, who would? So the character of Marius grounds the story, amplifies the terror, and heightens the pressure on and heroism of the Player character. But perhaps most beautifully, Marius becomes a tragic hero after this cinematic. By the end we cannot help but feel sorry for Marius when he is killed by Baal, for he is killed for being human, flawed and scared. When we confront Baal in the fifth act our fight against evil isn’t a fight for good. It’s a fight for humanity, and redemption of the human spirit. It’s also revenge, for poor souls like Marius, caught in the battles of greater powers.
Yeah. I mean, was he going to hide there until Baal and Mephist went for a piss, or was he just going walk by, saying, "Yeah. I just... Need to be in there, too. Uh, hi, Tal Rasha. Baal? Sorry! I knew that. I'll just be on my way now! Don't tell Diablo!"
Less than a minute after the cinematic: Marius, walking by Baal and Mephisto and into the portal: "Excuse me, I'm with him!" Mephisto, somewhere between perplexed an outraged: "Wha.. Die you insignificant little shi..." Baal, nonchalantly: "No no, he's cool. Let him through."
I don't think they cared at that point. They knew he was too afraid to step through the gate to hell. So Baal decided to wait and collect the yellow Soul Stone at his leisure.
I feel like this was a brilliant way to acknowledge Mephisto's bad lip syncing in the original; by showing his speech as that of an evil spirit that doesn't depend on the same tools as a physical being. Nicely done.
so many memories i remember when the first one came out we started writing autoclick duping macros and "trainers" like artemis(.)dat then trainers for the II+LOD(they came as a box set)
What I saw then was not meant for mortal eyes..... a demon, capable of flight, unable to cross a moat. So, I ran..... and cast firewall repeatedly from a safe distance. Then I went through the portal as you asked, Tyrael. You can give both of these stones to the Hero when they actually get here.
@@datukaruma1563 A bit late here, but in the original Cinematic, once Diablo finishes transforming into his demonic form, he lifts his left arm to reveal that a piece of the Wanderer’s Leather Cloak is still stuck to his arm, so he grabs it with his right arm and flings it across the room, and in this resurrected cinematic, instead of leather, Diablo grabs a patch of skin from the Wanderer still stuck to him and flings it across the room.
@@XochiCh Diablo's still wearing a cloth cloak, not Wanderer's skin. I believe the OP was referring to Mephisto, who indeed clearly has skin hanging off his torso and arms, which you can see stretching when he raises his arms.
@@the-witch-tako Yeah, so I just remembered this exists, and I rewatched both cinematics, and in this one, he pulls something that was stuck to his torso, not his arm, so, it is a lot more credible to be Aidan's skin, and Yeah, OP was probably referring to Mehis' Flesh Cloak, but I still had to check.
I just watched the original. You can hear his steps AFTER he walks through the portal, which is horrifying. I also wished they kept the stare he makes at Marius instead of growling at Mephisto.
@@reginaldcampos5762 this is what i thought when i rewatched the cinematic just now, in the original, he looks at mephisto, then just turns around and enters which in comparision to new cinematic makes him seem more reserved and intimidating, the prime evils are essentialy eldritch gods as old as the universe itself, and while they are still demons no doubt savage in combat (ie diablo charging at you on all fours), it doesnt make sense for them to growl at each other like animals when acknowledging something. Diablo is extremely intelligent and cunning able to plan ages in advance, with his brothers he masterminded his own exile, used the soulstones for his own advantage and orchestrated the events of Diablo 3 and all of this I can see in Diablo from the original cinematic, this one doesnt really do it for me
Gotta love Mephisto, his speech is like the most over-the-top evil you'll ever hear. I prefer my villains like this, instead of the "I'm only doing evil for your own good", Mephisto is just a primordial force that exists only to cause suffering and misery.
It's crazy when you realize that Marius was standing in the same room with the 3 most powerful, most evil entities in all of existence, and the only thing that's keeping him alive is a pillar that he's hiding behind
This was my favorite cinematic as a kid..They didnt disappoint with the remaster. Diablo and Mephisto models look epic. And the transformation scene was so well done.
Those quotes are very enjoyable to hear from Mephisto when you go to fight him in act 3, reminds me of that when playing as Mephisto for heroes of the storm

The reason why the Angiris Council did nothing about this is because a deal they made long ago with Mephisto. Centuries before Diablo II, the Angiris Council and the Prime Evils agreed to stay of the affairs of humans. But of course Mephisto had no intention of upholding his end of the bargain
2:34 Diablo throws the shreds of the robe behind him, but then turns to look at it. Random thought, but do you suppose he is actually turning cause he knows where Marius is, and is using his presence to terrify Marius into not crossing into hell? Otherwise, just seems kind of weird that Diablo wanted to see where the robe landed.
It still bugs me to this day that Marius somehow made it to Durance level 3, which means he got around the jungle, the council, and the compelling orb. If he could make it THAT far, unscathed, I don't see why he couldn't defeat Meph right then and there. Or, the reason why he got that far, was that the prime evils allowed him to. After all, as Baal put it later, he did "exactly as he meant to do."
Yeah, Mephisto can let anyone he wants into the Durance of Hate, and he of all people would know how ineffectual Marius would be against him and the other Prime Evils.
I'll point out just one detail in otherwise perfect cinematic - they did not replicate the most terrifying moment of the original - when Mephisto speaks to his brother and Diablo turns back to face him, while standing almost 'in' the Gate, he lingers a few seconds "too long" in complete cruel silence, no growling, nothing, his face is stone cold, no explicit sign of acknowledgment of Mephisto's words, he just listens and then turns back and enters Hell. For me it was a sign of great story telling - he does not even need to gesture, or growl like some 'animal' or speak - his very presence and demeanor is enough for you to realize that you're dealing with something extraordinarily intelligent and evil.
Yeah I was looking forward to that moment, it was very mysterious. Playing the original I interpreted it as his last bit of humanity staring back in terror at what he had become. Diablo, even a terror to himself. Or perhaps sensing Marius in the room and considering him for a moment? Interesting how those small details can add up.
Marius: "Hey Baal, how's life outside of jail? Your younger bro was cool to bail you out." Baal: "Oh it's good. Just had a family reunion. Mephisto's been bossing me around as usual." Mephisto: "Diablo, what have we told you about bringing friends over?"

The Great Evils were never united while the Archangels stood together strong. This is why demons couldn't win the Eternal Conflict. However the Prime Evils at the time portrayed in this cinematic were working together and they were unstoppable. Should they succeed in gaining possession of the Worldstone the tides of war would have been in favor of the Burning Hells. I kinda feel sad about them because the Angiris Council were stupid not to realize the importance of the humans and the Worldstone and Tyrael was the only one who tried to do something while the Prime Evils were so cunning, clever and powerful.
There’s a quote from Mephisto that he says to Diablo in Heroes of the Storm. He says, “Maintain the illusion of our discord, Diablo.” This makes me think that the Prime Evils are not so divided as we think they are and that it’s all an illusion.

I think he was still under Diablo influence. Another breaking of the laws from Tyrael would had been appreciated. :D
Andariel, Duriel, Baal and Diablo taunt you and declare their supremacy. Mephisto just mocks you for being late. He's my favorite of the bunch honestly.
One thing I wish they hadnt changed from the original cinematic: the ground no longer shakes when diablo walks. That made his presence feel more demonic by giving him unnatural weight and power that could make the earth tremble with each step.
What I love about this scene is that there are all 3 greater evils on one screen. In the beginning you know only the presence of one of them (Mephisto), then the second one is revealed (Diablo) and the fact that the last one (Baal) was there as well is revealed later.
Roughly the same impression I got with the original the first time I saw it. Seeing Mephisto for the first time as a terrifying monstrosity only to be completely overshadowed by Diablo's form 30 sec later lol.

mephisto is great of course, but for me, the malicious grin Diablo gives before turning into the portal is a great detail that I think makes the resurrected cinematic so much cooler.

This cutscene is legendary in terms of direction. It was truly chilling for the time d2 came out I remember being a little kid and I hadn't ever been exposed to anything so dark and demonic before.
From what I remember, Tyrael asks Marius to be brave and go through that hell gate. What I can't comprehend, it is impossible for a weak mortal like Marius to sneak pass through two prime evils.
I remember this.. "And the evil that was once vanquished shall rise anew. Wrapped in the guise of man shall He walk amongst the innocent, and Terror shall consume they that dwell upon the Earth. The skies shall rain fire, and the seas will become as blood. The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and all of Creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell."
I think it was the developers trying to interpret this scene. In the original, he seemingly stares at nothing silently for a few seconds, making you think if he was lamenting toward Mephisto or saying goodbye to Marius.

What the hell Tyrael thinking? As if Marius is supposed to slip past Mephisto, enter the Hell Gate, find his way to the Hellforge, challenge and defeat Hephasto the Armorer then destroy the Soulstone. Marius isn't even armed!
What I never understood is... what the hell did Tyriel honestly expect Marius to do? Go through the portal TO HELL (which, apparently, Baal and Mephisto will be totally ok with), and then just walk to the forge and destroy the soulstone? Something that only a decked up hero could achive after grinding through legions of lesser foes? Just.. how? Why? Couldn't he have taken the stone from Marius and pass it to the player?
Funny how small changes and omissions of details here and there totally rob the scene of it's impact and make it flat. For example, the shaking when Diablo makes his way to the gate, the framing as he approaches it, the screams growing louder as he enters... none of these are present here in the remade animation and it suffers because of it.
Tyrael told Marius to take Baal's soulstone to the Hell Forge. I'm like... really? Marius is unarmed and not a fighter. How is he expected to make a run for the portal past Mephisto? And then once he enters, how is he going to make it past the legions of demons there to get to the Hell Forge?
In the original's release version you can see Mephisto's lips moving, but they dont seem to match the words we hear, as if the cinematic was redubbed and he originally said something else
Marius, the most powerful char in the Diablo history Walk bare-handed into the temple of Kazarul, without anyone's help. And watching 3 Prime Evils doing their ritual, without being noticed, just because he hides behind a pillar. Remember that even the strongest Nephalem haven't faced all the Three together. We, the player, defeat them one by one. Imagine they come at us together, like the trial of three ancient Barbarians. I suspect this is all Tyrael's setup. He is behind all of this. Without his help Marius cannot reach so far.
After 20 years, I finally understand this cinematic. I never knew what the hell was going on in the original, just heard weird noises and bad lip sync.

To be honest, it's pretty impressive for Mario (or whatever his name is) to reach the 3rd level of endurance of hate with minimal gears on hardcore. He could have easily died to some doll explosions.

His form reflects the body he possessed. In D3 he possessed a girl so he has wide hips and noticable breasts. In D2 he possessed a probably the strongest warrior in the western land so it make sense he'd be very jacked.
Diablo is just so much better looking in this game then in 3 i have no idea why but he looks female in 3. Also Mephisto is by far the scariest of all the primes hands down
That was cause Leah got turned into Diablo at end of act 3 by Adria who betrayed tyrael and the nephalem I think Adria was planning to betray tyrael and the Nephalem the act 4 cinematic in Diablo 3 was fun to watch with Imperius fighting Diablo after he used his spear with fire to reveal Leah’s form

There's something wrong with the sound, the heavy base and dark nature of the noises has changed to a more light version. The Graphics are amazing, but the sound and timing of the visuals is very much off from the original. And I'm not just saying that because I've been playing d2 since it released.
@Matt diablo didnt "grunt" bc they literally ran out of budget for him. theres a poster which shows how his models face looked in that cinematic, and let me tell you, its HORRIBLE. thats why they opted to keep it in the shadows and let him interact with nothing. also, if you ask me, him just turning around, staring dumbly for 5 seconds and turning back always felt a bit...stupid....to me.
@Matt I wish they kept the shaking camera but I do like that they added the growl to Diablo. the time to be onminus was when he was the wanderer, now he's taken back his true form. I very much preferred the screaming you heard when Diablo first transformed in the original. It sounded far more demonic. the same sound plays here but it's more in the background and not as prominent
I hope it's just youtube compression, but all of these videos are missing a lot of the smaller atmospheric sound effects and little touches that made these things way darker. The gate to hell was a lot screamier, etc.
Ah my favourite cinematic as a kid, inspired me so much that I became a concept artist after posting on Diablofans forums a long time ago. I love d2R n have 82lvl we barb hehe, n the art n cinematics just absolutely amazing. However.. I was waiting eagerly for the transformation sequence as it was literally that, which was one of the most badass scenes. They done it so well, but just missed the mark. In original when he transforms, and then stands upright, the spines on his back aim downwards and he walks regally with shuddering steps. The leg and body muscles are big n powerful but in this remake look slender. He also has the hunched dinosaur aethetic which although looks good, it misses the kingly intelligent presence he had in the original, also his face was in shadow adding to the mystery, this reminisced how in D1 the moodiest of all diablo games called diablo as the dark lord, adding to the mystery. I was a little disappointed by this, though subtle it's so powerful and it's the missing mood and atmospher that VV team did so right with the rest of the game. Even Baal on act 5 was done really well. Again the game is glorious and having so much fun. I wish for a diablo 1 remake too lol

Mephisto has always been the most terrifying of the three for me. Seeing him in the resurrected version does not disappoint.

You can hear the full "prophecy" by looking up the 1999 e3 teaser trailer. It was what got me hooked on the game.

If there's one thing I miss, it's the way the screen shakes with Diablo's footsteps
And the pompous poses his strikes with every step, like he is walking down the catwalk.
I was wondering why he didn't seem as menacing while walking to the portal. The screen shake when he walked was so good in the original. Good cinematic nonetheless.

The reason why the Angiris Council did nothing about this is because a deal they made long ago with Mephisto. Centuries before Diablo II, the Angiris Council and the Prime Evils agreed to stay of the affairs of humans. But of course Mephisto had no intention of upholding his end of the bargain
2:34 Diablo throws the shreds of the robe behind him, but then turns to look at it. Random thought, but do you suppose he is actually turning cause he knows where Marius is, and is using his presence to terrify Marius into not crossing into hell? Otherwise, just seems kind of weird that Diablo wanted to see where the robe landed.

It still bugs me to this day that Marius somehow made it to Durance level 3, which means he got around the jungle, the council, and the compelling orb. If he could make it THAT far, unscathed, I don't see why he couldn't defeat Meph right then and there.
Or, the reason why he got that far, was that the prime evils allowed him to. After all, as Baal put it later, he did "exactly as he meant to do."
Yeah, Mephisto can let anyone he wants into the Durance of Hate, and he of all people would know how ineffectual Marius would be against him and the other Prime Evils.
I'll point out just one detail in otherwise perfect cinematic - they did not replicate the most terrifying moment of the original - when Mephisto speaks to his brother and Diablo turns back to face him, while standing almost 'in' the Gate, he lingers a few seconds "too long" in complete cruel silence, no growling, nothing, his face is stone cold, no explicit sign of acknowledgment of Mephisto's words, he just listens and then turns back and enters Hell. For me it was a sign of great story telling - he does not even need to gesture, or growl like some 'animal' or speak - his very presence and demeanor is enough for you to realize that you're dealing with something extraordinarily intelligent and evil.
Yeah I was looking forward to that moment, it was very mysterious. Playing the original I interpreted it as his last bit of humanity staring back in terror at what he had become. Diablo, even a terror to himself. Or perhaps sensing Marius in the room and considering him for a moment? Interesting how those small details can add up.

It's more like 1 man and 49 women. The other "brothers" are the male versions of the other devils who are diablos harem.
The Great Evils were never united while the Archangels stood together strong. This is why demons couldn't win the Eternal Conflict. However the Prime Evils at the time portrayed in this cinematic were working together and they were unstoppable. Should they succeed in gaining possession of the Worldstone the tides of war would have been in favor of the Burning Hells. I kinda feel sad about them because the Angiris Council were stupid not to realize the importance of the humans and the Worldstone and Tyrael was the only one who tried to do something while the Prime Evils were so cunning, clever and powerful.
There’s a quote from Mephisto that he says to Diablo in Heroes of the Storm. He says, “Maintain the illusion of our discord, Diablo.” This makes me think that the Prime Evils are not so divided as we think they are and that it’s all an illusion.

One thing I wish they hadnt changed from the original cinematic: the ground no longer shakes when diablo walks. That made his presence feel more demonic by giving him unnatural weight and power that could make the earth tremble with each step.
What I love about this scene is that there are all 3 greater evils on one screen. In the beginning you know only the presence of one of them (Mephisto), then the second one is revealed (Diablo) and the fact that the last one (Baal) was there as well is revealed later.
...its clear in the first cinematic with tap rasha in it that its Baal within him...

Mephisto is absolutely terrifying in the resurrected version.
Roughly the same impression I got with the original the first time I saw it. Seeing Mephisto for the first time as a terrifying monstrosity only to be completely overshadowed by Diablo's form 30 sec later lol.

mephisto is great of course, but for me, the malicious grin Diablo gives before turning into the portal is a great detail that I think makes the resurrected cinematic so much cooler.

This cutscene is legendary in terms of direction. It was truly chilling for the time d2 came out I remember being a little kid and I hadn't ever been exposed to anything so dark and demonic before.
From what I remember, Tyrael asks Marius to be brave and go through that hell gate. What I can't comprehend, it is impossible for a weak mortal like Marius to sneak pass through two prime evils.
I like how they're like: "Terrorize hell!", people in hell would likely not be having a great day seeing Diablo marching around.

I think it was the developers trying to interpret this scene. In the original, he seemingly stares at nothing silently for a few seconds, making you think if he was lamenting toward Mephisto or saying goodbye to Marius.

What I never understood is... what the hell did Tyriel honestly expect Marius to do? Go through the portal TO HELL (which, apparently, Baal and Mephisto will be totally ok with), and then just walk to the forge and destroy the soulstone? Something that only a decked up hero could achive after grinding through legions of lesser foes? Just.. how? Why? Couldn't he have taken the stone from Marius and pass it to the player?
Funny how small changes and omissions of details here and there totally rob the scene of it's impact and make it flat. For example, the shaking when Diablo makes his way to the gate, the framing as he approaches it, the screams growing louder as he enters... none of these are present here in the remade animation and it suffers because of it.

In the original's release version you can see Mephisto's lips moving, but they dont seem to match the words we hear, as if the cinematic was redubbed and he originally said something else

And watching 3 Prime Evils doing their ritual, without being noticed, just because he hides behind a pillar.
Remember that even the strongest Nephalem haven't faced all the Three together. We, the player, defeat them one by one. Imagine they come at us together, like the trial of three ancient Barbarians.
I suspect this is all Tyrael's setup. He is behind all of this. Without his help Marius cannot reach so far.

To be honest, it's pretty impressive for Mario (or whatever his name is) to reach the 3rd level of endurance of hate with minimal gears on hardcore. He could have easily died to some doll explosions.
The only thing i would change is that Diablo's steps dont shake the screen like in the original that added a sense of scale and weight to it.

If he somehow manages to get through the portal, then he'll most likely get slaughtered by whatever demons are on the other side. Diablo's host in D 2 is the warrior of Diablo 1, Aidan so it makes sense
His form reflects the body he possessed. In D3 he possessed a girl so he has wide hips and noticable breasts. In D2 he possessed a probably the strongest warrior in the western land so it make sense he'd be very jacked.

That was cause Leah got turned into Diablo at end of act 3 by Adria who betrayed tyrael and the nephalem I think Adria was planning to betray tyrael and the Nephalem the act 4 cinematic in Diablo 3 was fun to watch with Imperius fighting Diablo after he used his spear with fire to reveal Leah’s form

There's something wrong with the sound, the heavy base and dark nature of the noises has changed to a more light version. The Graphics are amazing, but the sound and timing of the visuals is very much off from the original. And I'm not just saying that because I've been playing d2 since it released.
@Matt diablo didnt "grunt" bc they literally ran out of budget for him. theres a poster which shows how his models face looked in that cinematic, and let me tell you, its HORRIBLE. thats why they opted to keep it in the shadows and let him interact with nothing.
also, if you ask me, him just turning around, staring dumbly for 5 seconds and turning back always felt a bit...stupid....to me.
@Matt I wish they kept the shaking camera but I do like that they added the growl to Diablo. the time to be onminus was when he was the wanderer, now he's taken back his true form. I very much preferred the screaming you heard when Diablo first transformed in the original. It sounded far more demonic. the same sound plays here but it's more in the background and not as prominent

I hope it's just youtube compression, but all of these videos are missing a lot of the smaller atmospheric sound effects and little touches that made these things way darker. The gate to hell was a lot screamier, etc.

Ah my favourite cinematic as a kid, inspired me so much that I became a concept artist after posting on Diablofans forums a long time ago.
I love d2R n have 82lvl we barb hehe, n the art n cinematics just absolutely amazing.
However.. I was waiting eagerly for the transformation sequence as it was literally that, which was one of the most badass scenes.
They done it so well, but just missed the mark.
In original when he transforms, and then stands upright, the spines on his back aim downwards and he walks regally with shuddering steps.
The leg and body muscles are big n powerful but in this remake look slender.
He also has the hunched dinosaur aethetic which although looks good, it misses the kingly intelligent presence he had in the original, also his face was in shadow adding to the mystery, this reminisced how in D1 the moodiest of all diablo games called diablo as the dark lord, adding to the mystery.
I was a little disappointed by this, though subtle it's so powerful and it's the missing mood and atmospher that VV team did so right with the rest of the game.
Even Baal on act 5 was done really well.
Again the game is glorious and having so much fun.
I wish for a diablo 1 remake too lol

Because he's supposed to represent the purest form of a demon/devil - a monster. Demons are typically depicted as beasts, so Diablo fits pretty well.
