Rhino 8 for Windows - Making Lap joints

  • This demo shows A new feature for Rhino 8. We use Shrinkwrap and mesh booleans as well as some standard mesh repair to create a complex shelled part with lap joints at the parting line. This process was previously impossible in older version of Rhino and is now a fairly straightforward process with the release of V8. Enjoy!

Shrink-wrap addition to Rhino seems no less in scale than adding wings to car and turn it into an airplane. It's such a huge thing especially for anyone that has to deal with mesh/ NURB geometries that are terrible, and you had to spend hours/ days/ weeks to remodel from scratch and still not get exactly the same geometry than you received.
I did enjoy the error solving quite a bit as most modellers are doing this 9/10 times and I appreciate the confidence in which problems were detected/ analysed and ultimately solved. With the rise in 3D printing capabilities and demand around the world, this equips any Rhino 8 users with a powerful tool to solve most demands coming their way.

I agree 100%. ShrinkWrap is the hero of v8. (Push pull is a close second )

It's getting more and more difficult. You need to make a version from which you throw out all the old stuff, useless tools and fill it with useful ones. All old programs resemble a garbage pit into which they threw something valuable and you need to find this valuable thing among the garbage.

what's useless to your industry is essential for others...there is no way to make a "rhino lite" that would serve all of our users well. We serve dozens of different industries and design functions with wildly varying needs. (from shoes and jewelry to massive computational simulations and optics used for satellite communication) Yes it's getting more complex, but it's also adding more power and control for those willing to learn it.
you can however, customize your UI to remove as much input as you want and make your own version of "rhino lite" if that's what you prefer.
I for one, have a popup toolbar that has about 12 tools in it and do 90% of my modeling from that and a few hotkeys.

@@Rhinoceros3d At this rate of development, it will soon be difficult for your program to learn. Therefore, you will lose your customers. I need to purchase the program. I was waiting for your 8th version, but I realize that I feel sorry for the time of my life to study your program. In order to find your 12 tools you need to spend time. I recently found the Hungarian developer Shaper3D. There are 40 instruments in the program and you can model whatever you want. But unfortunately they do not have a subDiv analogue module. That's why I looked at your program. But you still haven’t made it possible to work in one parametric window. You have it in some strange way. There is no navigator, which makes it easier to fix the position of top, right, left, etc. It is necessary to make extra clicks to perform this operation. Today people are looking for simple solutions. There is no time to study if you are not new to your job. I have a lot of experience with the 3DesignCAD program (France). This is a program for jewelers, I bought it 10 years ago for 5000 euros. This year, after Windows updates, it stopped working. The developer demanded 1800 euros from me for updates. I lost all my work for 10 years. Now I'm looking for an alternative, but I don't have the time to study complex things. I like your program, but the trial version showed me that the navigation and work in the parametric window are ugly. And in my opinion you don’t have History-Based Parametric Modeling. You need to optimize all your tools and make the program more logical and simpler

Having separate, editable, movable parts to customize an object to your needs is 'junk'? That's some warped logic there chief, to put it politely. /smh

I get what you are saying, but those individual parts have to be “good”. In this case they are not and this process allows you to get a shelled part from a model that would have required hours of additional modeling to be good.
The point is, whatever state the model is in , you can keep the parts separate, and ShrinkWrap to get clean shelled parts for printing.
Most of my old clients wanted trimmed parts, so I stand by the statement that this model in its unwrapped state would have been rejected as being unfinished and as such unbillable, which makes it junk in my book.

Maybe it would be a much faster to make this lock border with extraction edges of the mesh you has split and then rebuild the curves with needed density, do the offset and nurbs extrusion?

Possibly, be an interesting workflow to try.
