Also, I wonder if any of these ethnic groups or villages/groups of villages have organizations in Saigon or other cities? That is something very common in Turkey, Greece and the Balkans, as a way for people who moved into the city for work to maintain connections with people back home and with other people from their region in the big city. If you really want to go to some of those areas, it’s often much easier to start with one of those organizations; tell them who you are and your interest to learn more about them. As you say, some places are immediately curious and welcoming, but in others, they may be really curious but awkward or shy, and a familiar name to look up could break the ice so much more easily. You might have to tread a fine line to avoid being perceived as “doing research” there without a permit.

As a Viet Kieu (Viet boat person) that speaks fluent English, I get this in VN a lot too on holiday there.
