John Prine was a great singer-songwriter. He and Bonnie Raitt were good friends. I saw them sing this as a duet live two or three times. Beautiful. I can't think of another male songwriter who wrote and sing a song from a woman's perspective.
James Taylor wrote Millworker. Written from the perspective of a woman working her life away, supporting her children after her husband has died. I live outside of Nashville. John Prine was a parishoner at my church. He was a sweet man.
@@stgermain1074 Oh, I didn't know about that James Taylor song - cool! Yeah, I saw John Prine in concert many times and have watched many videos of his interviews and performances. He seemed like a what you see is what you get kind of guy - and he seemed real sweet.
I saw Bonnie in 1978 when I lived on Maui, Hawaii. I had no idea who she was when I went to see her but I became a lifelong fan that day. She can really sing and she plays a mean blues slide guitar. She is still on top with a best song Grammy last year.
This performance was indeed early. The segment is from a show taped at Wonderland for Dutch television, in 1977. The song first appeared on writer John Prine's first album, from 1971. (Prine would be EXCELLENT as a reaction subject, both early in his career (his voice was extremely nasal and his phrasing strange) and late, after his surgery for neck cancer in 1998; the surgery and his recovery radically changed his vocal quality.
"Angel from Montgomery" is regional slang for a pardon--or stay of execution--from the governor's office. Montgomery being the capital of the state of Alabama. The more you know! Would love to see you react to some OG John Prine. A lot of clever wordplay and wit in his songs. One of my favorite song writers
I'd never heard this song until 4 days ago, when a young folk artist I know and respect greatly did a cover of it at a very small gig near Milton Keynes and it absolutely blew me away. Notwithstanding that he could sing the phone book and melt your heart by the end of the first verse, but my god, what a fabulous piece of songwriting by John Prine. Bloody wonderful song.
I enjoy her music...clear, storied voice and outstanding guitarist...keep hoping she gets the recognition she deserves. Singing John Prine is an added pleasure.
One of my great life experiences was getting to see John Prine live in a beautiful old theater in Shreveport years ago. He was long recovered from cancer surgery but still put on a hell of a show. He had Iris Dement open and I’d never heard her before, her voice was unreal and they did a few duets together that were great.
My personal favorite version of this song has to be the duet between John and Bonnie. Trading verses, Bonnie hitting the notes, John dealing the somber poetry....perfection
The quintessential version of a classic song. Not only does Bonnie Raitt have an amazingly evocative voice, but she is one of the best slide guitarists in the business.
John Prine's last song "I remember everything" got him a posthumous grammy. Add that to your list of things to react to. It was/is beautiful and a perfect swan song
Please do review John Prine at various places in his life. Even with the years of struggle with cancer he just kept adapting but keeping the essence of his singing style. He could hold the stage on his own for a set. Those of us who were lucky enough to grow up and go to school around John sure liked him a bunch but never guessed what treasures he was not yet showing.
Great singer, and she chose a really great song. This Cover of John Prine was a breakthrough for her, and along some by Bette Midler others, helped broaden awareness of John Prine. Thank you for this one!
Notice how many are mentioning the songwriter here. RIP John Prine, you were life changing for so many of is. Bonnie Raitt finally got her recognition later.
You should react to John Prine and Iris Dement singing "In Spite of Ourselves". Talk about a couple different voices that sound so good together. Also Prine when much younger singing "Sam Stone" - just have your tissue handy!
You might enjoy watching Bonnie's dad, John Raitt on youtube. He was a huge Broadway star in the 50's. (And of course, you should do some John Prine songs).
I love Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi's cover of Angel from Montgomery, but John Prine's version remains supreme. There is a sadness to his version, that others don't seem to capture.
Fell in love with Bonnie when I was very young. Can't remember the exact song it was but it was one of her outstanding blues songs. Her song "Let's Give Them Something to Talk About" is one of my best gal pal and mine buddy songs since there were rumors of us being more than just friends. Please check it out.
You might want to give John Prine a listen, as he is one of greatest songwriters of all time. His songs tell stories much like this one. Spanish Pipe Dream, Paradise, Sam Stone, and his final song, I Remember Everything.
At the time that this song was written an, "Angel from Montgomery" (Ala.) was the colloquial reference to a pardon from a death sentence given from the governor in the state capitol in Mongomery. Bonnie is very young in this performance but wow, what souls
She is looking for a pardon from her unhappy marriage. Its in refereance to the governor in Montgomery pardoning a felon. One of many amazing songs by john prine. She does an amazing rendition here....
Would love if you check out another cover by Bonnie live at Montreux Jazz Festival…. Silver Lining written by David Gray. It’s fantastic. She’s fantastic. Love your channel.
Good timing actually, as she just recently won song of the year. She was the bottle girl for all the blues men, her favorite being Fred McDowell, but more famously Son House. She learnt alot from those heavy bluesy guys.
The legendary John Prine wrote this song and she performs an amazing duet with him on the "John Prine Live" album. Not enough reactions to John on RUclips.
Hi Beth, I've really enjoyed your videos. You have a wonderful enthusiasm about you....not to mention your friendly and beautiful smile. Now that I've buttered you up a bit, lol! I've been a working musician singer for many more years than I care to admit and during that time the only one to pick apart my vocal style has been me. I'd love to get your take on my singing when you have time. Just search for Lance Bedwell on RUclips and my channel should reveal a few of my cover and originals. Thanks again for entertaining us. Lance🥰
"Angel from Montgomery" refers to a pardon from the governor of Alabama. John Prine was one of the greatest Americana poets/song writers - listen to "Sam Stone" and "Hello in There" if you get a chance.

John Prine's original isn't "perfect" in a performance sense, but it's perfect for what it is. His voice conveys this desolate boredom of life coming from the narrator. Her longing for something that went past her and realizing where she's at. He captures it perfectly.
Love your reactions! You might want to check out a very very young Bonnie sitting on a bar stool playing "Love Has No Pride" (Historical Video). Reminds me of my college days. ruclips.net/video/KbqXMQCq59U/видео.html
Raitt is a master of masters, but there is no version of “Angel from Montgomery” that matches the power of Bonnie Koloc’s interpretation of the song on her album titled Hold On To Me.
I think this song is great. If I were to point to the tiniest of issues, I would say that without going to the blues notes, the vocal melody would have been too repetitive, but the blues notes _ despite being nice in and of themselves - don't 100% fit the character of the song. They fit it 80% so that's ok. It was the right choice to make the song interesting, but it ever so slightly corrupted the character of the song as a simple folk country number. Still excellent, I just felt the slightest bit of tension in that choice.
The vowel pronunciations that you are pointing out are very typical of people with the Southern U.S. accent, which we call a drawl. (I'm sure you know this) I just mean to say that those are not always choices, it's just the way people talk, and sing the same way.
Bonnie is good, but John Prine has such a warm, but melancholy voice that makes it very different. Besides the fact that he’s one of the best songwriters ever.
Amazing song. Everytime I hear her I want to go listen to John Prine, IMO America's greatest songwriter/poet.
I was lucky enough to hear him in concert in Chicago in the 90's. Great musician! Now I need to see Bonnie...
Totally agree, John Prine irreplaceable!

Listening to John Prine makes you a better person!

Bonnie Raitt, such a beautiful, soulful voice. It will often bring tears to my eyes.
She’s legendary…such a huge talent….rock icon…
Just seeing the title of the song and Bonnie covering I knew it was going to be terrific. She is SO good.

One of my all-time favorite songs. This one and her cover of Richard Thompson's "Dimming of the Day" are just wonderful.

Indeed he was!
wow. I did not know that. thank you.
This was the first song I ever heard Bonnie sing. Was in 1974! I’ve loved her ever since

Bonnie is a gift! Beth you should react to ‘love me like a man’ live from the 95 tour

Bonnie is awesome. I saw back in the 70's in a small venue call the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, Ca; been in love with her since.
long time fav singing long time fav written by long time fav (john prine)....thanks Beth
One of her best performances of this song. Nice choice
I have very much enjoyed watching your reactions to these videos. Thankyou for all the joy you bring to people. Blessings.
This is a timeless gem.
Exquisite song delivered magically. SO emotive.
Ive never seen this video before, wow, what a awesome performance of "Angel..." By Bonnie!!
Great singer, and she chose a really great song. This Cover of John Prine was a breakthrough for her, and along some by Bette Midler others, helped broaden awareness of John Prine. Thank you for this one!
My favorite singer. She taught me to sing

John Prine was a songwriting genius. Imagine he wrote this in his early 20s...
You might enjoy watching Bonnie's dad, John Raitt on youtube. He was a huge Broadway star in the 50's. (And of course, you should do some John Prine songs).
Taking My Time is an early Bonnie Raitt album, my favorite
I love Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi's cover of Angel from Montgomery, but John Prine's version remains supreme. There is a sadness to his version, that others don't seem to capture.
My daughter recorded a version of John Prine’s version for a birthday present for me. It is so haunting. I ❤ this song so much
Fell in love with Bonnie when I was very young. Can't remember the exact song it was but it was one of her outstanding blues songs. No doubt this is one of B.R.'s best performances of this tune and I've heard a few.
Saw Bonnie Raitt in Manchester fairly recently. She's the real deal.
I swear, Beth and Bonnie must be distant cousins. The hair, the skin tone, the vocal skills..it can't be a coincidence.:)
Talented, intelligent, attractive, redheaded women of Scottish descent...what's not to like!
John Denver also recorded this song and it was his recording that introduced me to this song.
Bonnie did it a great justice.
Also, Bonnie's "Road Tested " album is not only a great release, but it shows what a band can do when they are having a great time performing.
Road Tested is just plain awesome.
Una canción muy agradable bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀
The live Old Grey Whistle Test version is also excellent.
Bonnie tone is just not fair. It's just so good, people would kill for that kidna tone.
One of John Prine’s beautiful story telling songs. She sings it well, as always.
Always great to hear this song. Also RIP John Prine. Hope your enjoying a nice vodka and ginger ale up there.
She is looking for a pardon from her unhappy marriage. Its in refereance to the governor in Montgomery pardoning a felon. One of many amazing songs by john prine. She does an amazing rendition here....
The guitar player to her left is very good and still very active in recording in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He is Will MacFarlane.
Beth, Bonnie comes by it honestly. She is the daughter of John Raitt.
Great video. Check out Bonnie Raitt's version of Randy Newman's 'Guilty' - another brilliant voice performance
I like her later versions of rhis especially as duets
Would love if you check out another cover by Bonnie live at Montreux Jazz Festival…. Silver Lining written by David Gray. It’s fantastic. She’s fantastic. Love your channel.

One of my favourites with her. 😄
Susan Tedeschi makes a great cover as well of this one.
Time to cover some John Prine tunes, please. ❤ Edit for autocorrect
Yes, I'm surprised John hasn't been covered yet! Hello in There, would be a great selection among his vast library of songs.
Bonnie Raitt's parent's(are/were) both famous opera singers.
I can't you make me!!!! By Bonnie Raite. Oh you will want to sing it!!!
The songwriting genius of the late John Prine...
Look up her Dad Beth. The Chops are amazing.
Check out her Dad x Her with the Boston Pops
I love Bonnie, and John Prine was a genius, the working man's Dylan.
It doesn’t get much better than Bonnie singing the blues . She’s a mean slide guitar player too.
"Angel from Montgomery" refers to a pardon from the governor of Alabama. John Prine was one of the greatest Americana poets/song writers - listen to "Sam Stone" and "Hello in There" if you get a chance.
Love this, but Bonnie’s more mature voice suits this song much better than these earlier years.
I sent you a text about John Prine, the man was an amazing storyteller in his songs.

Really nice job with that song 🙂
I got to see Susan Tedeschi sing this in concert some 20 years ago.
John Prine's original isn't "perfect" in a performance sense, but it's perfect for what it is. His voice conveys this desolate boredom of life coming from the narrator. Her longing for something that went past her and realizing where she's at. He captures it perfectly.
Beth, is there a reason why you don't have a RUclips membership option?
WHERE'S THE LINK?? "in the description" to your cover song!
Susan Tedeschi does a good rendition. Would love to hear you contrast the two.

Not a fan of Bonnie Raitt but this John Prine song is wonderful.
Raitt is a master of masters, but there is no version of “Angel from Montgomery” that matches the power of Bonnie Koloc’s interpretation of the song on her album titled Hold On To Me.
Met Bonnie Raitt on one of her Australian tours. Sexiest woman ever to strap on a guitar.
I think I'm in the minority, but my favorite version of this song is Susan Tedeschi... but that might be because it was the first one I heard.
Please give your reaction to an Indonesia best female singer "Vanny Vabiola", her new cover song "Alone" just released on 19/04/2023. 🙂
John Prine wrote this song.

If this song doesn't move you at least a little, either you don't speak english, or you have no soul!
another good cover of this song is by Susan Tedeschi
Ginger’s rule Byb..
John Prine could just flat write a lyric
2 words....John Prine.
I think Angel refers to a good man, not angels .
Far far from her early years.. She was singing when a teenager.
Stop stopping the song so much jeez you ruin it
Bonnie is good, but John Prine has such a warm, but melancholy voice that makes it very different. Besides the fact that he’s one of the best songwriters ever.
