just came back to this after a few years.. I see his point I understand it.. I studied it when this released and now looking back... it feels like he's not just answering for himself but for the others in the south that feel the same... I come from central Bama right outside Birmingham,, his music for years to me and others has echoed through the hills and tall trees and the freight train haunting our nights with the distant roar and rumble it can be felt in his music.. from back in Creekwater.. He put himself in a position to try and break barriers and he did just that.. and at a price.. he was so straight forward and honest and genuine a lot of people didn't know how to take him... but he's a gifted soul and artist he can communicate a certain level of visual representation in his lyrics that honestly... only some parts of Alabama can understand that actual night time dark visual of Alabama.. he's one of the best out the state if not the best... this answer to everything will withstand the test of time if anyone was to question his angle..
