  • Apollo 8 - The Launch - Full Mission 01
This video details the countdown and launch of Apollo 8 on 21st December 1968. It is the first of an intended series which will cover the entire mission from countdown to splashdown.
A lot of the countdown video sequences are not available at present and I have pooled TV coverage and some documentary footage to fill in the gaps. From about T-6 minutes the launch is as seen that day through LET and Skirt Jettison when I have used Orbiter to simulate the sequences through to orbit.
The video is presented in 16:9 to allow use of photos and captions on the right of the screen. Apollo Guidence Computer programme DSKY is used once the sppacecraft is in orbit to show Mission Elapsed Time. The video ends with a replay of the launch followed by the first crew ccommunications out over the Canary Island station on orbit 1.
    NOTE -
Some sequences are silent during the countdown so I could include "live" footage in the correct order and timeline.
During the launch of Apollo 8 the astronauts communications with the Capcom were not broadcast - these are heard on the replay of the launch later in the video.
All Video and audio is courtesy of NASA.
My thanks to Jim Lovell for providing technical assistance during this Full Mission series.

Just heard that Jack King has passed away today - he was The voice of launch control, probably most remembered for his commentary on Apollo 11s launch, but also for this launch, the first moon mission and many others like the Gemini 6 abort. I have listened to Jacks commentary over and over on the audio loops while putting together the Full Mission series, and I am so glad I will continue to hear his comments for many, many years to come. RIP Jack King - 1931 - 2015 - LM5

In the spring of 1969, Apollo 8 was on a world tour. I was 11-1/2 years old. Apollo 8 was brought to a small german town right outside of the American Housing Area (Sportsfield) at Hanau, Germany. My friends and I were biking around the area and we stopped in the town and there was Apollo 8 strapped down onto a flatbed truck with the hatch wide-open for the world to see. I remember seeing the capsule and how discolored it was and how the heat shield was charred from the steep angled re-entry into the atmosphere that it survived. Whew! Awesome! What a treat that was for us! We didn't even know that it was on tour.

8 has always had a special place in my heart. I was a 10 year old kid at the time. The night, Christmas Eve, that they orbited the moon, I got my first catcher's mitt ever for my main gift. Then I got to watch the tv from the moon in my Grandparent's living room. Still brings back memories.

What I don't understand is why outstanding episodes of our American history like this only warrant 70k views and no one has been on this thread for a year it seems. And the same thing goes for other great Apollo threads/videos on RUclips. Yet (by accident) I landed on one of these dimwitted conspiracy theory sites a week or so back and it was like a hornets nest of activity with 10mil views!?!? What are we coming to here? Es ist schwer für mich, all meine Bewunderung für Apollo und LM 5 auszudrücken.
Ich als Zuschauer der original Übertragung von Apollo 11 bin in den Bann gezogen von diesen Stunden, von diesen Bildern.

My family and I were down in Cocoa Beach, Florida last year when they commemorated one of the buildings at KSC in honor of Neil Armstrong. Jim Lovell was down there also to speak at the commemoration. To think I could have run into him at the space center. I'd probably have freaked out. :)

it's interesting listening to the range calls. A minute in and it's barely a mile down range. The Saturn V lofted the craft vs the shuttle which made an immediate ~60° pitch.

Apollo 8 was an incredible display of American engineering first time human eyes see the darkside of the moon. Tomorrow the SLS will produce 8.8 million lbs of thrust setting a new record most powerful rocket ever brought to service in human history. Although I still say the Saturn V used it's own engines didn't have booster rockets attached.

The communications were so clear I could hear what the astronauts were saying before Paul Haney could tell us what they said.
This was a gigantic step towards the lunar landing.A first of this magnitude always leaves a certain apprehension about it.A lot of people in NASA were getting cold feet as the date was getting close.Frank Borman's wife had made funeral plans thinking he wasn't coming back.He didn't know that until he returned.

Coverage was on BBC2 from 1315 until 1500. Obviously they considered Grandstand to be more important than covering this event on BBC1 (during the winters of 1968-70 the UK was 6 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time)

***** interestingly no further Apollo report programmes were scheduled. Though unscheduled reports covered edited television coverage on the way out. Even the coverage of LOI wasn't scheduled, but coverage did begin on BBC2, as there was nothing on anyway, then BBC1 faded out of their programme to join that coverage. I think on your other clip James Burke says "BBC1 have now joined us"

Do you have... or know where I can find any of the NBC News coverage of Apollo 8? I have found the whole mission from CBS, and a small bit by ABC, but I have searched high and low for NBC coverage and for some reason it's as if it doesn't exist. I can find all 3 networks covering other missions but for some reason NBC seems to have been left out of the mix as far as Apollo 8 is concerned.
