  • Apollo 4 Launch - Flight Director Loop
Here is the Flight Director Loop for Apollo 4. Until 2024 this tape has been in the US National Archive and was only digitised a few days ago (it is February 17th 2024 as I write this). Nearly 60 years has passed since it was recorded.
Apollo 4 was an "all up" test of the Saturn V, launched November 9th 1967.
This video contains footage of the stacking of the Saturn V, the roll-out, NASA films of the time, photographs, film of the retrieval of the film pods and SIC booster pieces - A lot of what you are going to watch has never been seen until now.
Audio - the Flight Director Loop is the main audio here. There is very limited audio of the PAO loop for the mission. The last 3 minutes of the count are all that I can find in complete form. The audio for the PAO comes from 4 sources - NASA tape (which is very incomplete) NBC/CBS TV and radio broadcasts live on the day and the Smithsonian collection. You will be able to tell they are different sources but they have been mixed together to form as complete a record as I think currently exists.
Audio is a two track channel - headphones are advised
The Flight Director Loop is just an awesome listen!
My thanks go to Mike Fried who helped me secure the NA audio and the stacking and film recovery footage and to Johannes Kempanen whose help with the documentation surrounding the SII camera pods and SIC recovery were invaluable.
    Ed Hengeveld supplied the photos
All film and photos courtesy NA and NASA
    All audio courtesy NASA/CBS/NBC/Smithsonian
Orbiter and KSP simulators used for launch sequences

The definitive source for accurate space history -LM5 never disappoints with these marvellous recreations of our first steps into the void. Excellent to hear Glynn Lunney again showing his mastery of system direction and leadership.
As someone once said " Glynn is a perfectly normal human being -apart from being three hours ahead of everyone else! "
His expertise and leadership during Apollo 13 saved the astronaut's lives at that critical time when the CSM was dying and the LM had to be brought up in record time.

I will never forget watching that launch live on TV. I was always a confirmed 'space nut' and had been looking forward to this first flight of the Saturn V ever since it was first described during the Gemini program. Many folks don't understand the significance of this first launch. This was the first time in US Rocket history that a complete three stage rocket was all-up tested at the same time. There was a lot riding on this first launch being successful.

Brilliant! Another triumph, Simon, as was the crucial "all up test" back in the days of my early teens. We were really experiencing "white knuckle" flights during the debut of the Saturn V, and were amazed back then (and, honestly, today, too) at the launch successes that the vehicle accomplished, becoming the "never fail" rocket. I wish you and all of your subscribers & fans could have been with us in the Sixties when Apollo was one of the very few sources of pride as a nation and a technological race. I recall being disappointed when the last 3 missions were canceled, as all but the Apollo 20 LM were already built. Few wanted to budget the operational costs of those flights, given the not-inconsiderable expense associated with Apollo missions. I'm just grateful for having lived during those events, as well as your efforts at creating these documentations. Again, bravo!

VB has a unique , eloquent accent . The Launch Control Centre is really futuristic looking for the time - the firing-rooms are huge - with long rows of consoles - but it's the MOCR that gets all the glory - I must up my knowledge because it looks hellishly complicated to get the Saturn beast up and past the tower . Amazing to think Apollo 8 was the first manned flight of this fantastic beast .

STS-1 no doubt was the greatest test flight because of the live, human cargo but this all up test of the massive Saturn V has to be a close second. I'm always a bit disappointed by the network coverage and calls of these historic and incredibly risky and dangerous test flights. There's almost an expectation things will go just fine and the likes of Cronkite, Bergman, McGee et. al. never did express the gamble NASA took with this test. The entire man on the moon effort could have ended with a mishap on this flight (if the Saturn V had a first flight like Space X's super-heavy booster, that would have been the end). Uncle Walter's call is by far the best as he loses his cool, overwhelmed by the sheer power of the S-1C. "AWRRRUGH IT'S TERRIFIC our building is shaking! Look at that rocket GO into the sky at 3000 feet!!!
