Should come with a warning to new reefers, doesn’t work if you don’t cycle your tank properly, or over stock, or over feed, or if your lighting schedule is not bang on, or if your light intensity is off, or if you’ve selected the wrong corals, or if you are not jake Adams. It just won’t work if you are new reefers, stick with weekly water changes
He didn't cycle the tank properly... He used bottled bacteria and added coral and fish on day one.

Water changes are overrated, even for novice reefers. It's something that works great when facing a specific issue, but they are far from perfect for preventive purposes. The reef aquarium hobby is a lot more forgiving than most people give it credit for, and a new reefer can absolutely follow basic guidelines to keeping a reef tank with no water changes.
I did that when I was 12 and I didn't even have RUclips to seek help - Just a flawed book lol
@@MichaelHolmgaard I had more issues when I did water changes versus I did not do them because of swings I caused replacing the water. I go 1month between each change. It makes it harder to clean equipment though haha.
I dose all trace elements, calcium, magnesium, and only feed it.

got a no water Change tank up for 8 month now it's going really good. Only got a power head and heater in a 25gallon and a prime 16 light. (The coral are doing good not growing to fast tho) only got one peppermint shrimp and clean up crew. no fishes tho yet
Looking great! after seeing Sanjays tank with no water changes for decades i think this is a way over looked way of reefkeeping.

I have done saltwater tanks for years. I honestly have found that the less that I touch a tank the better it has done. I had a 55gal tank that I didn't do anything except top offs for a year and it thrived! Corals grew like crazy. I only tore it down because I had to move.

This inspired me to try something like this with My 55 gallon “fowlr” tank when I reset it. Now it’s been 6 months no water change and it’s actually been running better than the tank I was obviously looking after with weekly maintenance.
Glad you are feeding more. From January through July this year I did a similar setup with a 10 gallon and a HOB filter. After 6 weeks my alk had dropped to 5.7 so I started using Kalk in my top off at 1/4 tsp per gallon, which over time brought the alk back to mid 8s and kept it there. The only issues I had was a Duncan going from 4 heads to about 12 and my sarcophyton and pair of saddleback clowns DOUBLED in size! Overachieving bastard tank. The leather shaded out a chalice and was my only loss.
I have since moved into an Aquatop Eco Recife 40 but I’m using a X1 to dose all for reef. The second gen skimmer is a nice luxury I did not have on the 10!
what's your experience with all for reef? I'm starting to need a source of calc and alkalinity and it looks perfect for my nano

I’ve recently gone against 12 years of reef keeping, no skimmer no carbon dosing, just feeding and dosing calcium kh and mag :) have had no cyano no dinos no algae :) love it keep the great videos coming !! We need more

Noticed there is a screen top on this now. I too have a Red Sea Max Nano the same age as this one. It had a Plexiglas top and about a month ago got switched to a screen. I was having trouble with temp swings, evaporation has gone up but I think the screen/open top has helped with the heath of the corals. I had a ducan that was closed up for almost two months that I thought was for sure not going to make it. He is now open and making an incredible come back.
Man as you said, this is 2020 out of wack is the definition of this year.
I have a 55g going 2 years now with no water changes or dosing just top off with fresh water every week
What is your parameters Alk, calc and mg?
@@Iuryfer honestly I haven't checked my water parameters since I stopped the water changes. The tank was well established for a couple years before I stopped the w.c. and it's mostly mushroom corals a handful of fish and couple turbo snails and a sandsifting starfish. I only feed once a day I scrape the glass 2 times a year with gloves on. I feel with me not sticking my bare hands in there and messing with the tank much also not over feeding it helps alot with the tank staying stable.
Welldone guys for doing this brave experiment, just a question, corals are consuming calcium and minerals all the time from this 300 days water would worth if we could make some water analysis to see how far we are now comparing it to the original analysis when you started, this will give us a great idea about chemistry of water over time .

Jake have followed these updates with great interest.Beginning to think might be best to empty the cupboard below my system and stay away from the supplement shelves at my LFS.This is Nature saying leave me alone and "I will be alright".

I love this little tank! I know others have asked for params...I'm excited to see those.
I mentioned them in the previous video, alk was low like 5dKH, calcium was a little bit low under 400, magnesium was normal, and zero nitrate
People talk about the "ugly stage", but has you mention, low nutriment import is a key. Especially frozen food, I control the amount I add, most of the time its dry food (when I can)
In my nano reef competition youtube playlist I show everything I do, all the process and I'm currently filming this week on "how I prepare the aquarium for corals" and after testing the water, I realize I wouldn't even need to make a water change, the parameter are almost spot on. However I notice a drop of alkalinity, probably because of bacteria and I dosed a little bit to counter balance. I will add a doser even before having any corals (weird I know) Because I will introduce couple sps birdnest along the way.
Nitrate 1, phosphate very low and chaetomorpha to balance the frozen food I added for my yellow clown goby were the key to avoid any ugly stage.
I'm trying to be very careful with this series since I document everything and I know some beginner will see those videos so trying to educate at the same time.
It was very interesting watching the playlist of this nano since my wife just bought me the waterbox 20, it looks awesome, the one thing I’ll love to know it’s the complete light settings if you don’t mind me asking 👍

many, many years ago I had similar setup as my first reef tank with softies, similar to Jake's tank. Must tell I changed 20% of water once in two years! And never made a single water test :) which now when I think is kind of ridiculous :)) Most interesting part - all corals did very well and after two years all rocks where overgrown almost completely.
I dont think these corals consume a lot of nutrients

Contrary to what you'll read online, that trachyphyllia isn't growing because its flesh needs flow to fully expand. That flow isn't nearly what it should be, which is usually very high for nano tanks in general.

@@B1-66ER Mine does well doing it monthly. I add trace elements, and major nutrients like alkalinity, calcium, magnesium. I notice I loose color without trace. I follow the bottle or if somthing looks less colorful I increase it.

What are the parameters? No dosing, no water water changes, no skimmer, no testing! ???Pretty hard to believe!!! That really changes all concepts learned through decades of experienced hobbyists worldwide!!!
I think people tinker too much and do more harm than good. Just leave it alone and most of the time it will do well if you were thoughtful with how you set it up. It turned into an impressive tank.
How does the calcium level remain above 420 ppm? I have a 15 gallon reef with mostly torches and montipora. My calcium drops from 20ppm every week that I don't dose or change water.

I like this tank, as well as the low maintenance low flow tank you have... at home? The bare bottom one. Kind of amazing how effortless reef tanks can be under certain circumstances.

Jake you've said for filtration, all you have in the back is nothing except for a pump, and a coarse sponge. Did/do you use the filter sock that came with the kit or anything else?
What all living do you have in the tank? What did you use to start the tank?
ever think of using protein skimmer or hangon back refugium?
I am not a big fan of letting my fish going hungry to keep the polution down. I would rather feed more and over do the filtration.
Jake great tank , no recomended to newbies to hobby not to do water changes ,only experts and carefully can do it
Great set of videos! Any chance you can tell me what your light settings are? I feel like it's somewhat important but I don't think you went into detail in the build.
I'm 2 months in with my first saltwater tank, I've had freshwater aquariums before, but never tested water parameters until now, I've been fighting the nitrogen cycle and trying to keep the levels of ammonia and nitrites at bay with water changes a couple times a week. Am I wasting my time? Do I need to worry? I have 2 clowns, an algae blenny and a few crabs. 40 gallon breeder. Any feedback would be much appreciated, just curious as to how a tank gets set up in one day and left to coast for 9 months. Awesome tank! Looks Amazing

Hi Jake thanks for the video, I wanted to know if you’re cleaning the glass, do you have a magnetic cleaner in there somewhere that you’ve left in the tank the whole time so you didn’t have to put your hands in? Also would you think about adding a small urchin if you wanted to fight the coralline without doing anything major?
An urchin would bulldoze corals around, and the coralline is too thin to be nutritious. I do clean the glass either with an algae scraper magnet but sometimes with long handled scraper

I have a question what can I do to encourage my hammer 🔨.to fully open up .I’ve tried moving it to the middle of the tank & to the send bed I’ve also tried adjusting the light & flow and still not opening up, it’s only been a few days since I got it. it does but I haven't turned it on since the first month, didn't have much to pull but I also just left it in place

You did have a protien skimmer on this stank, the built in one at the back but the title says no skimmer. Did you remove it and when and why?
Are you satesfied with that light? I am in process of buying new light but don't know what to take :)
I'd have to imagine you need to dose at some point, simply because you do have stony corals that will suck calcium and alkalinity out of the water, you are now seeing coraline algae which will suck calcium and alkalinity out of the water. Unless you're going for the approach of "yeah you guys don't need to grow anymore" and not sure that will allow them to survive long term.
Plus that planeria, it's never a problem until it is.
just wondering. how did you manage to not get a nitrite spike at the start 4 weeks? like, im about to set one of those tanks up for the 1st time and since ive had so many problems with my freshwater tank im kinda scared to not being able to do a quick waterchange on it.
The only thing that im going to keep in the tank (90L) 2 clowns, 1 bandit or cleaner shrimp and probably a goby with ofcourse some easy corals
How do I prevent or remove flatworms? First time reefer!! I would like to keep them out if possible??

Looks like there’s low flow towards the GSP. I’m trying something similar right now. Have you noticed any change in coloration or growth, comparing it to GSP that receives high flow?
I haven't seen flow affect the coloration of GSP

How has the calcium and alkalinity not dropped? I set up the same tank and my alk dropped to 5 and had to dose
It rides around 4-5 dKH but the corals have acclimated to it (I presume)
How do you feed your corals?
I think the duncan just wants more flow...That's what I'd try anyway. Flow is almost nonexistent to it in the video, and last video as well.
