The etymology is basically how we say "bossed gongs" sumtimes
In Southeast Asia, gongs have dimples, while in China, they just don't, and use a sort of just the metallic disc with slight bossing. Chinese gongs have a distinctive "prahhsshhh" sound than those bassy "bongs" bossed gongs make. In Western orchestras, Tam-Tams (an alternative version of gongs) don't have any dimples, it's just a metallic disc. It also makes the same prahhsshhh sound that Chinese gongs make, and it also makes the bassy bongs that Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Filipino bossed gongs make.
