Good video. I definitely identify with some of this, and although I tend to do it to myself, rather than whinge to others, it is still an excuse for inaction... It can be very hard to shake the feelings of inadequacy, and generally the only time I find it easier to do something I need to is during periods of crisis, when I stop thinking. Which is bloody annoying because it is stressful, like waiting to do your homework until the night before a deadline.
So true we always believe the next man is better and we arnt good enough well, they may be but ! We are all on different stages of our journey and my teacher i used to go to would yes you can see the top of the mountain but its not the point of not being at the top its look how far uou have travelled and come!!! Its so true ben!
Hi Ben. Excellent video. It needed to be said. I will have to say, that when I was in the Navy, I practiced guitar, as much as I could, during my free time, listening and trying to emulate all of my favorite bands and guitar players, and became good enough to eventually make a living at playing in a full time touring rock band for years, which opened numerous doors for me, opportunities that I would have never had, had I done like all my other shipmates and wasted time in bars etc. That was a long time ago and I have played in many bands and done studio work over the years, yet I still try to learn and get better. It does not matter how old you are or what level you are as a player, there is always something new that you can learn and you can always become a better player. You're right, especially nowadays, with all of the youtube channels and professional guitar courses, like yours, if you can't play what you want, or play "good enough," which of course is a subjective standard, you have no body else to blame but yourself. People need to stop complaining and just learn and practice, and practice. Everybody on the planet has the same opportunities as everybody else. You can get there or at least die trying. or you can accept the level that you're at and just focus on getting better at what you do well. Thank you for having the courage and discipline to do what you do and to be honest about it.
I had a friend like that and, the older he got, the worse he got. I finally had my fill of it and decided to not hang around him any longer. I’m not sure how his wife deals with it every single day!!!
This message of tough love from Castle Higgy reminds me of something a good friend and amazing guitarist said to me once "There are two types of guitarists; those who love PLAYING the guitar and those who love THE IDEA of playing the guitar. Figure out which one you are."
Hi Ben. I hope you're doing well and staying safe. I'm always amazed with your positive attitude and skills. But the further back I go to learn from your older Video Tutorials the more amazed I am. Today I'm working with your Video focusing on 4 Lessons For String Crossing. As soon as I get this lesson working for me it's going to be a huge benefit in my playing. So I'm saying another huge THANK YOU BEN for all you do to help us. Cheers , Dude 🎸
You are right… Although I’m sure as you say some players are doing it to get the sympathy vote … if it’s a truthful self critical appraisal which isn’t trying to give a saddo get your fiddles out and cry with me crap vibe ... then I’m all for it .. but as you rightly mentioned it’s a possible mentally intrenched behaviour that is going to need serious shrink hours to fix … perhaps you should offer a free service Ben as part of your excellent courses … let’s say the Keith Richard’s starter pack … If any comments are mentioned by the player about how they suck etc … then a Telecaster gets whacked around the back of the neck … I’m not talking about a death blow .. but enough to give them the message Shut the @$#& Up!!! Just an idea …
"WE ARE OUR OWN WORST CRITIC." Like i may not be able to speed pick.. YET . but fuck me running... I will be turning 60 in 30yrs and still working on my guitar hobby. Im amazing at using my slow emotional 80s ballad solo style. But i also take 20min to speed pick and sweep.
If we don’t know where we are going in life don’t despair… any and every road we choose WILL take us there. Read it again. You give great gifts of knowledge about guitar. You deserve peace so I just gave you a foundation of understanding yourself forever. God bless ya
When I was a child I used to dwell in self-pity, complaining about how worthless of a loser I was. Thankfully my parents straightened me up, absolutely nobody benefits from the constant seeking of sympathy. Things can be hard sometimes, but don't bring others down with you. Have a laugh at yourself once in a while, no-one is perfect after all!
This could also be done by some to justify their unwillingness to crawl out of mediocrity. The joke about the drowning man, god will help me, man drowns....etc. Thank you Sir Ben! Castle Higgy 4 Ever! 🛡️⚔️🍩☕
I’m a shredder at heart but I’ve been into what you may consider elevator music lately. A light funk that gets my wife and other ladies shaking that ass. 😂
