It's actually fun. You just climb until you run out of ladder, kick the pedals down lock yourself in (I've freeclimbed, only safetied at the top), and lean back. It's a little wobbly on the last fly, but fun. :)

After 30 years in volunteer service I loved being on the ladders even though I was terrified of heights I got over that fear and pushed through it. Today NOPE 30 years of the job and being 52 years old I am done let you young ones do that maybe in a year or two if I started back to crossfit I may be able to do it again not sure though I would want to.
Im thinking about becoming firefighter. The thing tho i would be more comfortable climbing that ladder than a sketchy one going on a sketchy roof(the transition from the roof to the ladder is what making me rethink about doing it)
This was part of a college academy and I don't think they wanted to pay for any slip ups. When I did it for my paid tower it was ladder belt only, palms were a lot more sweaty on that one.
Hey man looking into getting into firefighting. That looked hella scary but also fun. Are you hooked to the ladder to prevent you from falling or not really?
It really just depends on where you do it. I live in Wake County, NC and we didn’t wear a harness while climbing it. Just a waist belt that you hook in with at the top. So far I’ve only made the climb once during an orientation week with my department. I’m currently going through the academy and I’ve been told it will be the same way.
