    I love that ending. Scott goes from belting in the jam section to taking over the base so that Matt can take over the beat-boxing so that Kevin can rock the trumpet solo.

      Good grief, I think you're right! I just assumed they used Kevin on a backing track since it was a studio recording, but after studying the video I can see Matt doing the rhythm and Scott starting the bass before the camera leaves him the moment Kevin starts the trumpet. Wow, talk about handing off the parts!

      @@joebarnhart4460 They don't use backing tracks, as far as I know because they never do anything in a music video that they cannot do perfectly in the performance hall.

      That’s been historically true, and I’m with you on that, but I have questions about that part in this particular song. Matt’s mouth does look like he’s beatboxing, possibly, but I clearly see him making a cymbal sound with his mouth where there should be a wood block. I’m a huge Pentaholic, and I know their principles, and I have no doubt that any of them can make the sounds that they claim to be making (I even wonder if they actually added autotune for Cher’s part in 90s Dance Medley, or if Mitch taught Kirstie and Matt his autotune mimicking tricks), but it still feels like this ending is Kevin on a very rare, maybe even singular, backing track.
      I just cut this comment to go back and look, and watch Matt’s mouth, and you can see his mouth for two rounds of “Prrrr-chh-chh,” and his mouth doesn’t do the same set of moves twice. He’s clearly doing an ooh up until 11:16. So I pasted this comment again to finish it. I would’ve dropped it and moved on if my study didn’t back up this comment. Also, you can hear Scott’s part and Matt’s bass when the trumpet sounds start, so I think this is the one instance I know of where they break their own rules.

    Their genius is their ability to place the right voices in the right place.

    Great reaction! 👏
    The original singer is Camila Cabello (formally of 5th Harmony) And the song came out in 2018...

    One of my favorite parts of this song is Mitch’s decision to sing, “I loved him when I left him.” We know (from the Sing-Off) that they’re willing to change lyrics to make sense for their character (Scott as the masculine lead in Britney’s “Toxic” singing “A girl like you, should wear a warning,” or in Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart,” singing “I’m gonna show you, baby, that a man can be so tough”), but here, Mitch has since become comfortable with who he is, to the point where he can sing about loving a “him.” That would never have happened in the Sing-Off days, because of him not being comfortable about it, and the producers actively trying to hide it. Great choices everywhere in this song, but that was my favorite.

  • @christophercobb6352
    @christophercobb6352 3 года назад +5

    Exactly! Scott is singing during almost the entire song, but he makes himself "disappear" into the background vocals so you hardly even know that he is there. This requires great control over dynamics that most performers don't need to worry about.

    Trivia from a trained partner-dancer (aka ballroom/Latin): this cover is noticably faster (by approx 14 bpm - a lot for a dancer) and the beat boxing puts in Latin clave/percussive rhythm. So, I love Cabello's version for beginner West Coast Swingers, but would play this for beginner cha cha dancers. (But really, Westies do WCS to _everything_.)
    Yeah, there felt like a bit of a Tito Puente and/or Mambo Kings tip of the hat.

      Once I have a chance to dance to this version, I'll probably enjoy it, with its little switch-ups throughout. Right now, being extremely familiar with the original with lots of great dance memories appended to it in my mind, this feels busy and too cute by half.

    This performance is so much more low-key than usual, but it adds to the feel of song, enhancing that tropical, take it easy sense of the flow of the music. Love the beatboxing trumpet!

    Their transition games is very strong and always have been - I think it comes from their medley & ‘evolution of…’ works. They have a ‘sixth member’, Ben Bram, who works with them on a lot of the arrangements (as well as a lot of other groups).

    To see how good they are as a team and in their arrangements, watch some of their “Evolution of” videos. An early one would be Michael Jackson which is with Avi and a later one with Mat is Ariana Grande. These are mashups of multiple songs and are filmed in a continuous take. Not necessarily one take but continuous and together. They really highlight their ability to arrange and transition and it requires such tight communication within the group.

      The crew in the studio where they recorded these Evolution videos commented that Pentatonix always came so prepared that they only needed three or four (continuous) takes. And the multiple takes were not because they made a mistake, but because somebody wants to do something differently or just to see if they could do it better.

    To write original songs, they usually work together in ones or twos with professional songwriters. So it can be Kirstin with a songwriter, or Kirstin and Kevin with a songwriter, and so on. They usually mention which members are involved in the song credits.
    After they have the song, then they "cover" it (do the arrangement) just like how they cover any other song.
    As for how they arrange songs, here's some information I gathered. I don't remember if I've posted it on your channel yet because I've posted it on other reactors' channel, so apologies if this is a repeat.
    =====
    MC: How is material chosen? Who does the arranging and how do you take a well-established pop hit and make it a Pentatonix tune?
    Hoying: We pick a song with a great melody that we can agree on. Five of us sit in a circle. Kevin starts with a beat and Matt will sing the bass line. Then we improvise the lead and backgrounds over that and record voice memos to capture those raw moments. It’s really messy, super sloppy. We give those improvisations to *Ben Bram*, who translates everything to paper with all the little details and mistakes. He takes what we come up with organically and creates a structured arrangement that is “singalongable.” Then we work out the other details later. I consider “Hallelujah” our best arrangement ever and it was the biggest song in our history. We sang through it only one time before Ben cleaned it up.
    Mitch Grassi: It’s a crazy process with crazy chemistry. We put a phone in the middle of that circle and stumble through the song, make up parts as we go along, and then everything has to be cleaned up so it sounds listenable.

      Every reactor is drawn to different parts of an acapella group. I also come from an era where vocal percussion wasn't mainstream, so it isn't something that I listen for specifically. As a tenor, I completely miss most of the great bass and alto lines because it's not what I was trained to sing. So I look to you to comment on the parts I miss.

      @@ReactionsByJeff I’ve been there! I turned 60-and it gets worse-Hubby is 69-and we both say “what day is it? What’s going on?” ! I know a lot of songs through my 35-year-old son. He and I have the same taste in clothes, movies, books, television, food, and music. So he’s always sharing songs with me. (He’s the one who introduced me to PTX!) That’s the reason I know who Camila Cabello is!
