Plus I see the Explorer keep increasing in price, good for retirement too, (although mine is too sentimental for a sell). Congrats !!
I saw your comment on the rolex Explorer video Hodinkee made last year as well as other recent videos on the Explorer this year, so I was kinda waiting for this video to pop up in my subscriptions at some point lol. Glad you went with the 36mm 114270 reference. 36-38 mm is pretty much the sweet spot in terms of size for me, since I also have a 6.25 inch wrist. I tried on the 39mm version at my local Rolex dealer and it felt a little too chunky and cumbersome to wear. The 36mm proportions are perfect to me. The 1016 is still one of my grails that I want to own at some point in my life, but I am gonna wait a while on that. Great video as always, cheers.
Haha yeah this was going to happen at some point! I agree, the 36 is so much better unless you have very large wrists. The 1016 is so cool...hope you get it one day!
No box/papers with this one, but it did come from a reputable jeweler AND went through the AG service. I didn’t think it was worth an extra $1k for papers. I still have the DJ.
Happy for you, Brock! I myself have admired Rolex (and AP's) from a distance. You sure motivate me to work hard for my goals -- both with life and the better things in life! Thank you and more power to you and your work!
Just purchased another 114270 Explorer. After a year on a waitlist for the newest 36mm Explorer it still hasn’t come in. I did finally get to try on the new 124270 36mm and was disappointed. I still prefer the older 114270 or even the 14270. The dial indices and arabics are bigger now throwing the negative space off. Also don’t like the 19mm width on the bracelet. It’s a better constructed and updated watch for sure but the previous version Explorer just feels like a true Explorer compared to the new glitzy model. The 36mm is the proper size for my 7” wrist. My 39mm Mk2 Explorer is probably going to get sold. Great watch for a bigger wrist but just not for me. Ebay is just as good as any place to purchase a luxury watch. I’ve bought many even before the authenticity guarantee program. Never a problem but I’m pretty experienced and have seen dodgy luxury watches for sale. Pretty obvious the problem listings but the new program seems to have chased most of the scammers off the platform. The prices for these has been going up and up. Especially since the new 36mm has rekindled interests in the Explorer, plus the new version is unattainium do driving people to the older Explorer
That really looks good on you, man...congratulations. I've had my regrets to this day. I was in the Navy and I was stationed in Japan, it was around early 2000. I bought a used datejust Rolex with a presidential bracelet and a silver dial from a local jewelry store/pawnshop. I've it got for a layway, it was only $1,500 and I've paid it off in 6 months. My regrets was, when I went broke I've sold it for only $1k...Up to this day, I still couldn't believe that I had to sold it. It could have been my investment, too...:(
I hope to pick one up this year! Do you have any problems with centering the clasp or sizing the bracelet on the 114270? I have a thin wrist, between 6-6.25 in like yourself, and I heard that some thin wristed people have a problem where the watch will tend to roll towards the pinky side of the wrist due to the off centered clasp (the solution is to flip the bracelet or remove a permanent link).
Yes, that is a problem. I was debating whether to use the solution you mentioned or just put it on a nice rubber strap and keep the bracelet pristine. Not sure I’ll keep this one forever so another strap might be the best option.
@@BrockMcGoff Thanks very helpful answer. Sounds like I'd have the same problem - crazy for a watch that costs this much! Yeah I think removing the permanent link is only something to consider if you feel it's a forever watch. I think I can live with an upside down bracelet, but I almost need to be able to hold/see/try one to know for sure.
The 36mm series (Exp I, Datejust, etc.) from Rolex is a great choice, especially for smaller wrists. I have owned and sold several, as my 7.125” inch wrist is just a bit too large. Nice watch and nice video!!
@@BrockMcGoff Everyone feels differently about watches, but in my opinion, 36mm is the perfect size for the Exp l or Datejust. It just doesn’t speak to me at 39mm. The problem doesn’t lie with the watch, but with my wrist size!! 😂
