My hubby & I had a motorcycle we used on road & off road. We liked taking back roads into nowhere off the highways a lot. One day we were middle of nowhere in Nevada & got offroad for a couple of hours & I noticed a horse off my right & he was running with us. We slowed down & he crossed in front of us & ran with us till we stopped. He stopped & looked at us like 'well come on '. I got a few pictures & they are my most treasured pictures as that was the first time I had ever seen a wild horse. I'll never forget it.
"Strong splendid bodies, drifting through spectacular scenery... Rhythms of an ancient past, preserved in the present for those willing to watch." Beautiful words and documentary.
It's a beautiful site to see. I used to see them often when I had to drive to work going towards Reno. They do migrate but from my understanding they'll pick an area they like and stay and then they get over populated and must be transfered to other places. And the area I worked at horse signs everywhere...big fine if you hit one. They do have as much fencing to keep them off the highway, but certain areas do have openings to where they try to cross the highway. It's a big fine on horses, deer and cattle.
They are an invasive species and starve to death without intervention from the Bureau of land management relocating them and controlling their populations. There is plenty of human intervention otherwise cruel suffering and starvation ensue.
Yes, mustangs do show and feel love. Look up Goliath and his mare red lady. Horses are just like any other living creature. Each one has a different personality. Some can be tamed and some will fight for their freedom until the day they die. They are amazing creatures we must preserve. It will be a sad day if Mustangs ever stop roaming the wild places. People need to share the Earth, and stop being so greedy and judgemental on which animals stay or go. Thank You for putting out the video.
Absolutely! How arrogant of us to think we have the right to enslave anything we want. Horses are such magnificently intelligent creatures, and their freedom is as important to them as ours is to us. They have feelings as deep as ours. I've been around mares who were grieving a stliiborn colt just as hard as any human mother does.
Thats really cool... I lived in Minden, Nevada and wild horses were a big part of the memory for me too... Had huge window facing backyard with ridiculous susets deep red and purple with wild packs of horses riding by or resting in the field behind my house! Amazing stuff around 1980
Incredible footage and insight into the private lives of these amazing horses. So much to learn from their body language in the wild. Thanks for putting together this amazing compilation
They’re a beautiful herd. Did anyone else watch this just for the footage? I knew most of the facts. I like watching them in natural habitats as much as I love riding. Possibly more! I like to look back at things, and their nature, and naturalism is one of my favorite things.
That mare was moving towards you because you were very non threatening and whenever you move away you are inviting her in. She was curious. Wild horses are very smart and learn fast. Of all the breeds they are the most easy to train and bond with.
I've been watching a lot of these wild Horse docs & I think this fellow mentioned or compared the horse's intelligence with dogs & birds; my 40 years plus living and working with these wonderful creatures, showed me just how smart they are, HONEST, affectionate, willing, loyal. My horses knew exactly where the gates were ~ we had a series of corrals, some interconnecting ~ and if I should miss closing one, they'd go to it & through it.
Horses are such beautiful and funny creatures. I love to ride horses in real life, and I look forward to every single weekend when I get to see them. Whenever I ride horses I feel so free. :)
At 26:26 is a beautiful paint with the real Spanish Barb genes for paint's color distribution. 60 years ago an old timer told me that originally wild herds came in many rare colors with lots of buckskins, because buckskin was the right medium color to help with heat control, like wild animals. They often had "zebra stripes" on their withers and legs. Then ranchers started releasing saddle horses into the herds in the winter to join the mustangs. Letting them run loose was cheaper than feeding them all winter. They would be rounded up in spring. It was easy to get them inside the fences because they wanted the alfalfa in the irrigated pastures. The better mustangs were caught and kept. In the wild, they started cross breeding, and there started being mostly brown (bay) wild horses. After that ranchers got plow horses which were often roan colored. Those crossed with mustangs and the roan gene dominated, because it lightened the color of the dark brown (domestic) horses, and they withstood the heat better. So more wild horses were roan, which they didn't used to be. So I was told that the wild horses had a lot of domestic genetics mixed into them. I miss the exciting variety of rare colors that were still around when I was young. The first horse I was given to ride was half mustang and half plow horse. It was a roan "Sevina". One neighbor had a perfect leopard appaloosa born to pure local mustangs. No one in hundreds of miles had ever seen any genes for appaloosas, never. And so no one could explain this. It was very beautiful.
You have given an old man much pleasure with this video. I don’t know that much about horses well.....maybe a little more than the next guy, but watching these horses and your pleasant voice relaxes me .,Thank you very much for this.,looking forward to some more Many many thanks

Great video. Thank you for sharing this. I searched for a documentary about wild horses after seeing a show about horses “tamed” to earn people money. Yet, two of the horses died on the field after crashing during the race and another broke its leg jumping. The crowd gasped, but only because their money won’t be doubled. I was furious.
