    This is so informative I have an old donkey he’s been okay with the kids on his back while I’ve been leading him and just eager to please. The farrier said he should be a good candidate to learn to ride . I’m going to try with a bit less bridle and see how he manages on his walks around the property

    For starting a horse or mule I always ground drive them first so they know how to walk, stop and turn before riding. Would that work on a donkey?

    What happened to the only rest. I got a donk that don’t like to go much even with spurs so I got to turn her to the right a bit then she tries to get going then stops. Started two of them

    Do you ever ride with a halter first and then the pulling on the halter might make more sense to them? I'm about to break my first donkey and have only ever done horses before

    I'm getting a 1 yr old donkey. How old do they have to be to ride them. And how much is it to buy all the necessary tack plz respond.

    • @mountainridgegear8172
      @mountainridgegear8172  4 года назад +3

      Chalen Equestrian I usually start them under a riding saddle around 3 1/2 but that also depends on how robust the donkey is. Tack cost is about the same as any other equine, maybe a little cheaper. I use Queen Valley Mule Ranch saddles.

    Bits and spurs with a donkey?!! Definitely not ! Never!! See how nervous the donkey is his jaws clamped tight on bit! Disappointing....

    • @mountainridgegear8172
      @mountainridgegear8172  3 года назад +5

      As a donkey (or any equine) gets used to the bit many refer to that as getting “quiet with the bit”. It’s common for an equine to fiddle with the bit early in training. Nick has become accustom to the bit and is nice and quiet now. Donkeys brace against pressure. Without an effective way to stop him I could put myself or the donkey in danger. He could run I front of a car for example. Spurs help forward motion. Because donkeys have such a good memory, spurs don’t have to be used much. Now, I just need to bump him with my heels. I haven’t needed spurs since that video.
