Here's a great example of my lack of shooting skills! 🤣 We had lots of fun though. It's always good to spend time with my good friend Dave. There were plenty of birds so the odds were in our favor to shoot our limit.

Ice fishing for trout at Blue Mesa, CO

Blue Mesa Reservoir is located just west of beautiful Gunnison, CO. Gunnison is one of my favorite mountain towns. My boys and I spent two days fishing. We would've fished three days but snow was coming in Saturday night and I am not a big fan of crossing Monarch Pass when there is snow up there. I highly recommend the Alpine Brewing Company. Good pizza, good beer, good service!

This was back in 2016 just before I started making my own pack saddles. My friend and former Air Force boss, LT Col (R) Jerry Rose came along with me. It was a nice, relaxing trip.

Gentling "wild" Donkeys
Просмотров 13 тыс.3 года назад
This is Lacy (blonde) and Sis (brown). They are my new projects. The first step is getting them gentled, trusting and used to my touch. Setting training goals is very important. Set short term and long term goals. Be sure your goals are attainable and not too lofty.

Can you tell me about your feeding program?
@@andreacobb2024 I feed good quality grass hay, low starch, moderate protein. I bale my own hay and it’s mostly smooth brome in this part of Colorado. They get a flake or flake and a half of hay, morning and evening. In the winter, they might get some grain on very cold nights.
@ thank you. Right now I feed them a mixture of all stock feed from tractor supply and Orchard grass pellets. I soak it in water for about 20 minutes and they seem to really enjoy it. I do usually give them a flake of hay a day. I use the come along rope as well. And I have taught my donkeys to lead.
❤❤❤
Do not ride a donkey, cause he has not stable back like a horse.
that should also work to get him in a horse trailer.
Thanks for this- I am working with a BLM donkey/gelding that has been at my barn at least 10 years, they had someone assess him and was told he was caught too old to do much with after the barn owners took him in, he was wild and no one fooled with him- you couldn't get near him, he is in with a couple of horses on about 2-3 acres. I got him to let me pet him and trust me and now I take him on walks around the grounds- their minds do NOT work anything like a horse's brain does, and pressure gets you nowhere- he will just freeze up- this had a lot of good information in it- he's a cool little guy. will never be more than a pet, I just want him to be able to be handled- we have come a long way the last couple of months, but it took several years to get here- just found you and I will be learning what I can to make his days better
I'm new to this channel, I'm surprised he rides a donkey, does he have a horse?
@@TheAnonyy nope, but I do ride mules. 😁
Great video. Would you say BLM burros can become tame with time and patience? How long does it take?
@@JoshPostVlogs it can take two weeks to two years. It depends on the donkey.
@ Thank you. Very helpful.
I have a mule and he’s the best ever. Go anywhere, do anything, friend for life. Mules are amazing animals
Do you have a price list available. And a brochure or something we could look at? We met you at Cowboy Christmas in Vegas 2022 .
Great job for first tacking up! These 2 little guys are really precious! God bless 😊❤😮❤😊
❤THANK YOU FOR BEING SO KIND WHILE WORKING WITH THESE DARLING DONKEY'S! GOD BLESS 😊❤😮❤😊

So glad to see donkeys being treated so gently. Wondering if the harness had a bite bar which made it necessary to remove the wolf teeth?
Question injust irdered some . But my saddle just has two solid conchos in the back. I didnt check for that. Its a barrel racing saddle. Do i have to have the rings in the back or leather straps or is there a way i can run attachments to the D ring in the back so the saddle backs stay on .
@@Callierippleeffect it really helps to have the D rings to properly secure the bags but you can run the leather through the slot for the rear cinch.
Thank you for your dedcription about scratching/encouragement at the right time. This was helpful.

Do you have anything for oxen?
@@OldPecanHomestead we’ve outfitted a couple oxen. We made a mini saddle with a standard sized breeching & breast collar.

This is so informative I have an old donkey he’s been okay with the kids on his back while I’ve been leading him and just eager to please. The farrier said he should be a good candidate to learn to ride . I’m going to try with a bit less bridle and see how he manages on his walks around the property
Random question… what breed would you consider Sis? Or what kind of donkey would she be called? We just got a Jack that I cannot for the life of me figure out what he is. Your videos have been so helpful in learning how to handle him from a ranch perspective (thankfully he is already pretty well trained). We’re hoping to use him for packing one day and am looking forward to start collecting some of your pack gear for my husband as gifts!
@@kristinabrochu5004 since she came from the “Wild West” I wouldn’t even venture a guess as to her breed. While there are different breeds, generally donkeys aren’t connected to specific breeds, especially the feral donkeys that are found on BLM land.
Ha! That’s good to know! I have so much to learn!
How did you get your donkey to start running? Mine is 2.5 years old, and whenever we start picking up the pace, he starts getting a bit aggressive and he goes into defensive mode. And when I want him to start picking up the pace, he doesn’t understand what I’m trying to do
@@jcjc7783 have you tried running from behind, off the left hip? Also, try trailering somewhere. It could be frustration because he doesn’t want to leave your property.
@@mountainridgegear8172 interesting, I have not tried that. How do you get them going when you’re behind them? We go on long walk around our quiet neighborhood. We live on an acre which he grazes, and then 2-3 times a week we walk around our agriculture (quiet) neighborhood for about an hour plus. Most walks go pretty well, while others he gets a bit frustrated. He’s a 2.5 y/o jack. I’m ordering him a pack saddle this week as well, as I believe a new discipline will be good for his brain.
We just never go out to them without some sort of a treat and in a couple of days we can't get them away from us. Then we pet them and put a halter on them.
@@LHLK-f9t treats are a good ice breaker but continually giving treats can create a host of problems. Be careful.
@@mountainridgegear8172 that is why you use treats to train with and cut back and eventually off after, anyone who trains knows this
Why not say Made in USA on your website? Your products appear (from pictures on site) to say made in USA. Why the Made in America on the website?
What happened to the only rest. I got a donk that don’t like to go much even with spurs so I got to turn her to the right a bit then she tries to get going then stops. Started two of them
But the vids are helpful
You ever try putting the saddle on the rail, let him smell it, even give him treats for a bag on it?
Such a terrific video!! I love how you educate us and how respectful and gentle you are. You have a great relationhip with him which is first and key!!
hidupz Bolsa réplica 1:1 con imagen reflejada, resistente y resistente al desgaste. Me gusta mucho.
I love donkeys ❤ thank you for rescuing them. I'm guessing they were from a blm round up ?
Donkey thinks the man is scared to cross the bridge on his own.😂
A donkey's comfortable carrying capacity is 150 lbs despite what you've heard or read. Take their apprehension as a sign that they are communicating an intuitive physical resistance due to the pain they will endure but will not overly express because they are so gentle and submissive. Be careful with them, put them less to work, and offer them more of the freedom that they deserve. They are happy to help, but don't abuse this kindness. 🩷🩶🩷🫏🩷🩶🩷

Thank you for letting me be part of your day, im a city slicker who needs out of the city-oh yah can i feed some carrots to your donkey
One of the most appealing video in years. This burro may have taken 5 steps. That rancher has an ocean of patience.
Thanks for posting 🫏❤ from Pennsylvania.
Thanks for this tip! I just ordered your new bags (haven’t received them yet) but I have always fought that with saddle bags and cantle bags and now I know
To me it's sad. I have 2 BLM burros and if I could let them go free back in AZ I would.
Why do you tie around a foot, rather than use a halter?
We are wanting to get into donkeys. Is this one a standard?
He’s a mammoth. 14.2 and up is considered a mammoth.
where are the treats!?
Treats can create VERY bad habits.
He should have been given a treat after a task.
I avoid giving donkeys treats. I don’t want them to see humans as vending machines. Because, what do you do when you put a dollar in a vending machine and you don’t get your candy bar? I don’t want that to happen to unsuspecting humans.
Just looks to me that the Britchen would be really annoying be set so low, every step, while stretched back would keep get tighter, and then looser as the animal walked, and the feeling see-sawing back and forth to each leg.. tell me you had your's too low.. but reason I'm looking is I'm considering using a britchen on my young Mustang to help desensitize his back end while under saddle only, as his saddle doesn't tend slide up on his neck, but yea he is jumpy like a mule
I have a donkey and she was wild for at least 10 years and we’ve had her for a year and she has always like lipped me she just likes to put her lips on me and never ever bites I was curious what that meant
Very good
