    If I remember correctly from his biography, he ran with his head tilted because he was obsessed with watching the clock on the scoreboard and also to increase his chances of hearing someone's spikes on the cinder blocks behind him if they were trying to make a move. There wasn't exactly a quiet atmosphere from the crowd when he was on the track.

    Interesting observation on the heel strike and low arm carriage. In 1975 the year Pre died- I was a HS track / XC freshman and heel-toe and low arm carriage was actually taught by my coaches. Even so, we won 5 straight XC state championships from the late 70’s. I didn’t hear about paw back or toe-heel-toe foot strike until years later. And Viren’s arm carriage was much more compact like the great African runners who later dominated middle distance. Maybe Pre’s form errors were partly a result of misguided coaching?

    Why analyze Pre running form ? He was a beast and his heart is what pushed his body not his form

  • @deplorablepatriot8605
    @deplorablepatriot8605 4 года назад +5

    What made Pre great was NOT that he was a more talent runner: others have certainly run faster than him in the intervening 50 years. Yes, he DID have one of the highest VO2 max ever measured, but what he had was a capacity for effort. It was his sheer determination, grit, indomitable and indefatigable spirit; he wasn't the greatest of all time but he became an inspiration for all time because of his all-out approach and refusal to quit. People forget that he was only a 19yo newcomer when he challenged veterans for medal in the '72 Olympics 5K, and still he forced those who beat him to run a 4-minute mile to close out the race. No, he didn't medal, but he spread the field and changed the race significantly ... they KNEW they had been in a real race, not some jog-and-kick affair like the preceding heats. And yes, it was ultimately a waste of all that talent because he had been drinking at a post-race party when he rolled his beloved butterscotch MG, and it landed on top of him.
    During this analysis, the author notes that Pre backed off going into the final turn; for those wondering, Pre backed off on the last turn because, yes, he was fading and he knew it, but he also knew that passing on the turn would have meant running further, so he backed off and gathered himself for one last chance on the final straightaway.
    They might have beaten him, but they were had to bleed to do it.

      I'm a true hack runner. Gut it out type. I've watch at least 10 of your videos. You often reference "heel strike". That has been incredibly informative for me. You just don't know some stuff until someone points it out. Thank you for that.I wish I could afford the 1500 dollar shoes the runners used in the "breaking 2 hour" documentary. That was a incredible project. The hurt on Kipchoge face being 26 seconds from 1:59 made me a little sad because remarkable is not enough for that performance.

    • @TotalRunningProductions
      @TotalRunningProductions  5 лет назад

      Robert J Robicheau I know right? That was an incredible race. Kipchoge is truly an amazing athlete. And as far as heel strike is concerned, it’s largely recognized as a negative in the running community. Of course every runner has a unique stride, but a deep heel strike is largely not good. The best running form recognized to alleviate a heel strike is keeping the body nice and tall and aiming to have your feet land directly under your center of gravity. Check out Alan Webb or Jim Ryun’s form and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Thanks for watching! Best of luck running.

      12:36 for the 3 mile or 5k? 3 mile, probably. Maybe 12:55-12:59 for the 5k on a modern track and with modern footwear, but the current ratified world record is 12:37. I love me some Pre, but he is completely out of the league of Kenenise Bekele and Cheptegei. Who knows what "old man strength" he would have gained in his late 20's and 30's though for the longer races.

    • @kpk33x
      @kpk33x 4 года назад

      In the context of the times maybe he approaches 13:10 in the 5k around 1976-1977. This is right near the WR. He didn't quite have the 800-1500 that a lot of the 5000m guys had in 1976, so he would have had to run faster the first two miles than he did in '72 or the last lap gets him again. Then honestly he guns for the 10,000 in 1980 (he would have been 29), eaten the boycott and then make a run at the marathon in 1984.

    • @TotalRunningProductions
      @TotalRunningProductions  7 лет назад +4

      As far as building a core goes, there is a multitude of abdominal workouts you can do to build a stronger core. I'm sure a healthy amount of sit ups, planks, v-sits, and other ab workouts will benefit you greatly in the long run. Now as far as "upper body" workouts, I would caution you not to build too much muscle in your upper body, that is, if you're looking to become a distance runner like pre. Pre's build was definitely natural and not build because of working out. Most distance runners who excel has very little excessive upper body muscle. Hope this helps!

    Pre was good because he had an 84.4 V02 max. Sky high for that era.. His running economy was average for a world class runner. Meanwhile his protege Frank Shorter had a V02 max of 71... but had the best running economy of any American runner who was tested during that era. While Shorter was a "real pretty" runner... observable "form" doesn't always directly correlate directly with running economy.

    Steve's weight was about 145 lbs., over the norm for this caliber field and 7 pounds heavier than Viren (138 lbs.). Prefontaine doesn't look as slim-waisted as any of the other competitors, possibly because he did drink beer sometimes. He also may have underestimated the competition. Prefontaine predicted, for himself, a 4.00 min final mile in the 5,000 meter final, implying that only he was capable of this. Ian Stewart also said the final mile would be at 4.00 minute pace and said there were at least 5 other competitors in the final besides himself and Prefontaine who were capable of a 4.00 min. final mile.

    Had he lived, would he have been able to beat Viren? My opinion is doubtful. Maybe not as talented as Viren and certainly did not have the support system. He worked in a bar, was on food stamps, and lived in a trailer? How much smoke did he take in at that bar? Too bad. Great tragedy. Viren was basically a professional with significant support system. Finland knew how to do it..

      The utter nonsense that pre had to work in a smoky bar, got by on food stamps, living in a trailer most likely made him more grittier, more determined. He was a professional athlete for Christsakes! He was a phenom in high school, beating liquori & shorter in a 2 mile, losing to lindgren by 3 sec. Any other country would've made sure that pre would've been taken care of-housing, money, quality food intake! The USA SUCKS when it comes to track & field athletes, as to how we're compensated. I lived it firsthand. Stan huntsman, U of Tennessee, head track coach (88 olympics) was my mentor. Nowhere as good as pre- 14.26 5 k, but I tried! As far as I'm concerned, track & field athletes are STILL political pawns!

He was only aged 21 at the 1972 games and missed a medal cause of his inexperience. Yes, he could have won that one using better tactics. By 1976 there were a number of other international athletes far faster than Pre. eg World Record holder Dick Quax at 5k plus a number of Europeans. There is a reason that Pre never won an international race (to the best of my knowledge.) He seldom raced internationally so never got that experience and wasn't a fast enough finisher if a race was slow. I'm not being critical of a great man. He was great but in USA only.

      Wilson, how old are You? I'm 61. Back in the 60s & 70s, the only international track meets were the Olympics & pan American games. So to say that pre was washed up @ age 24 is just shit running out your mouth! How many records do you have that still stand after 40+ yrs.?

      @@kennethsteffens5074 Mate, I'm 64. Back in the 70's I was competing in those International meets in Australia, Canada, USA and England. I was at the Montreal Olympics in 76. My mates/rivals had competed at the 72 and 76 games. Many US Universities would send their top middle distance athlete to tour Australia and New Zealand to compete against, at the time, the top middle distance runners in the world. They had been doing this since around 1962 cause of Arthur Lydiard, Peter Snell etc. The kenyans were regular visitors also. Groups of us (20 or 30) from Aussie, NZ, Kenya, Uganda, England) would tour the US being sponsored by sports promotors, meaning "International" meets every week (or twice a week) in different cities. It was sad that Pre never reached his potential cause of his death but NONE of us ever raced against him. His lack of international experience both worked for and against him at the 72 games. No one knew him so didn't cover him and his poor strategy made him miss a medal. (Hindsight is a wonderful thing)Track athletics was changing from amateur to professional at the time so many changes were taking place. Your knowledge is seriously deficient. With correct strategies who knows what Pre might have done at the 76 games. But he needed to be 20 sec faster over 5k to be a real threat. Plus he was not fast enough over the last 800m for strong finishes. Oh, the Pan Ams were not a top contest. Commonwealth Games had most of the top middle distance athletes in the world back then. But, US athletes couldn't compete.

      @@johnwilson5743 you made some sense...however, most tracks in the US were cinder until the mid 1970's. Some schools asphalted their tracks. Rubberized tracks @ high schools & colleges began around 1975. I didn't train & compete regularly on a rubber track until 1976 @ univ. Of Tennessee. I dropped my mile time from 4:34 (high school) to 4:19. Also, Nike & new balance training & competition shoes were SO much lighter than Adidas! The technological advances from the mid '70s to 1980 were "night & day." There's no telling what Pre could've accomplished had he competed another 5 yrs. I don't doubt your take on international competition, but back then the U.S. simply didn't monetarily fund their best track & field athletes. Those guys had to pay out of pocket for AAU events, unless it was a school sanctioned meet. Running & soccer were of no importance in America in the '70s (nobody made money off of them).

Well, whoever that doctor is, he has had to live with the fact that he caused someone to crash their car and kill themselves. I hope the bastard had trouble sleeping at night. He is probably well dead now, so I'd hate to be him having to meet his maker and explain his selfish actions that night !!!
