  • Starfield Has What Star Citizen Will Never Offer
Starfield is SOOOclose to release but for space game veterans there's a key aspect of the game that's been eluding them for years & Starfield has it. Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous, & No Man's Sky are great games, but they'll never be able to offer you this critical experience, like Starfield does.

Most of the AAA studios try to take as much of the "space" out of their space games as they can.
Based on Bethesda's past, you'll likely wind up fast traveling everywhere.

Eh I see they may have a mechanism to fast travel but I think traveling by ship will be the main solution of getting place to place. Also you I’m sure saw the mech they made. There will be plenty of creative ways to build ships. I’m sure ppl will start full RUclips channels dedicated to that or even how to build nice outposts. I wish they talked about the other space stuff you can role play as in game. I don’t think ppl realize how deep this game is. They have trading economy which is essential to any space game. They have mechanics to let you be a bounty hunter, space trucker (as said by some of bethesdas devs), pirate, explorer. Then there’s the factions and etc. There’s so much I hope the reviews really tell ppl what’s so big about SF.

The worst part of SC is the other players. Sure there are couple of good guys out there but the lot of you just want to pirate and PVP, not go on an adventure or do any mining or anything. They are the players that just do the main quest line in an RPG and beat the game in 20 hours then complain there was nothing to do. So far, SC is only slightly less toxic than a GTA online lobby, but just like with that game, the players make it toxic. If we could have private servers or RP-esque servers for SC, I would never stop playing it. Unfortunately, I don't think that will be a possibility with server meshing, so all hope is lost there.

    • @westheking12

It isn't really fair to compare Starfield and Star Citizen to one another as they are vastly different games. Even SQ42 won't really compare well, seems like it'll be more like a COD campaign latched on to a Wing Commander spiritual sequel. Star Citizen is a niche GRIND, developed at a snails pace, using a game engine that has water tech worse than vanilla SKYRIM. Star Citizen is also the proverbial prick tease, always pushing the next patch/build/ content, and delivering very little, the only time anyone comments on the current ALPHA, is when the shits hitting the fan. Starfield on the other hand offers everything and more from Day1. Its a game for the masses, on PC/Console/Handheld/Streaming, with modding thrown in for good measure.
Star Citizen is that black sheep of the family you have to mingle with at family functions, Starfield is the hot date you just can't get enough of. The exodus from Star Citizen will be biblical, Star Citizen has so little to offer........and im Concierge.

The two games are aimed at the same player base … obviously some people are right into MMOs, but by and large, fans of space sims will be attracted to both of them.

  • @parawill7074

To be honest, I haven't thought about Star Citizen since the Starfield showcase. Star Citizen is simply not a "game" or even a "sim" at this time because it isn't finished enough and the structure isn't stable. There is no real foundation and the "game" is really a "playable while under construction" IP. I enjoyed it, but it has a long way to go before I can settle into it, so Starfield will be a great breath of fresh air to satisfy my space fix for the time being. Star Citizen will still be alive and won't get killed, but CIG needs to get things in order because the market and real life can easily change things.
Then again, maybe that has been their intent the whole time to bank millions. They got all of that crowd funding and drive ship sales, and they can simply slow roll everything as time passes by and people walk away......after they release Squadron 42 to add to the bank.

Neither is killing the other. They're both completely different approaches to sci-fi and I love them both. They aren't copying each other; they're just really good imaginings of sci-fi and I'm for it.
People really, really underestimate how much fun Star Citizen's seamlessness is BY ITSELF; not including activities. And it is only in Alpha; where everything is getting plug and played, pulled out, put back, reiterated, etc. It isn't even in Beta (though lots of critics seem to confuse the two; including community members).
People also really, really underestimate how much desire there is for a true sci-fi RPG in Starfield. Not Mass Effect; a third person shooter set in sci-fi themes, but a true, run around, ship flying, character exploring sci-fi RPG. What excites me about Starfield is that it looks (and the gameplay makes it feel) like it is actually sci-fi. It doesn't use the ship as just a hub for conversations, it doesn't use the character as just a 'relatable object' so you aren't staring at a ship's engines literally 24/7. All aspects of it are represented and I really crave that in a RPG for a change.

Which are very deep and puts the sandbox on a huge scale just like SC. There’s literally no game like it out at all in the single player space realm. All the others are ship combat space sims. Or a cartoony one like NMS. No this is the first grounded space game sandbox being released, so exciting.

@@westheking12 I love NMS, but it isn't a RPG. I love SC, but it, too, isn't a RPG. SF is; and I've really been wanting a RPG that brings together the ship, the crew, and the universe into something playable rather than one of those and the rest is window dressing.
Everspace 2; GREAT RPG. AMAZEBALLS space combat. But you don't play as the character; you're the ship. The character is isolated to cutscenes; good ones, but cutscenes.
      Freelancer; same as Everspace 2.
Mass Effect; RPG, play as the crew, ship was window dressing and a hub for conversations.
Star Ocean (in particular The 2nd Story as it was what I played the most); GREAT RPG. Sci-fi window dressing. No ship, no universe, just sci-fi in the sense of 'character from beyond the sky', and it was your tried and true save the kingdom concept.
Outer Worlds; FPS RPG, ship was a hub, universe were maps you zoned into. Great game, but same problem.
I love the seamlessness of Star Citizen, the players, dynamic never-know-whats-around-the-corner gameplay (even the bugs lol), but I don't want it ALL the time. I just want a good single-player universe RPG romp where all the sci-fi stuff is included instead of just genre + sci-fi themed levels/vfx/narrative.

So addressing the clickbaity title for a moment... a couple things.
Firstly, Starfield isn't in competition with Star Citizen... it's in competition with Squadron 42.
Now with that part out of the way... I think Starfield will have it's moment in the sun for all the reasons you outlined.
But it also suffers one huge limitation that you also mentioned. No atmospheric travel to off script locations and not even any ground vehicles.
That might take some of the shine off.
Squadron 42, because it will have the full map, and then some, won't have this limitation. Additionally (If what CIG says they are doing is true) Squadron 42 is character generation just as if you were rolling your attributes.
If you choose and follow through on the military path, you end that game with all the skills and reputation you acquired and then that, and even your military uniform and fighter... port over into Star Citizen allowing you to continue what you started.
Starfield, has no such follow on world. When you are done playing Starfield... you are done playing Starfield.
Great video though. A very balanced treatment of it. Keep up the good work.

I think that fundamentally they are entirely different games that share a setting and the comparison need to stop or it’s only going to hurt StarField.
Just like Elite was fine until it started to get compared to Star Citizen constantly.
Even though fundamentally they are different games.
Now one is nearly completely dead and it ain’t star citizen with the massive amounts of funds pumped into the game.
On a side note i hope everyone remembers this is a Bethesda game and is tapering their expectations around that and not exclusively what Todd Howard promises you.
Long time Bethesda “no longer fans” have become very stand off from Bethesda for a reason. We’ve started to abandon their original games that made them the giants they are for a reason.
Fallout 4 to Fallout 76 sales went from over 10,000,000 copies to only 1,000,000 for a reason.
They’ve been gutting detail from their games for mass appeal for Y E A R S while still promising all that detail and expanse their games USED TO offer but no longer does.
The greats that ran the company and made the games they promise haven’t been with Bethesda for years.
The dumbing down of their own games happened at a shocking pace.
They have made it a trend to gut entire portions of games, mechanics, activities and NPCs and quest lines just to add ONE mechanic to a game.

People grief because there are no consequences. People hate wipes because it forces everything you do to not matter, and so have no consequences. People cheese the game and get bored with it because there are no consequences. Every day is the last day of the world in Star Citizen.

CIG is not doing magic and they are not smarter than other studios. They still have to prove that they can deliver half of their promises on a larger scale.
But what's even the point of having all the building accessible? How is that supposed to make the game more interesting?
Starfield is coming out in a few days and it's not trying to be SC, it's just trying to be fun to play while offering some freedom.

I'll definitely try starfield, but Star citizen will remain my favourite, it's an actual space game as opposed to a space themed game like starfield, where the planets aren't even full size and you can't just fly around and explore, ships don't have interiors either and these two things are very important about space. The first thing that comes to mind when you mention the universe is how big it is, so planets need to be full size to really aid immersion, space between planets needs to be as seamless as possible, also take/landing. Another thing is your space craft, in every single space movie we've watched, the ship is a major factor, we see people walking around, engineering, med beys, sleeping quarters, laboratories, armoury etc. It's your home for the time being, not just a tool from a to b, being able to fit ground vehicles and smaller space craft in larger ships is amazing.
