Been playing again past few nights, left off at Saladin alone with 2 chickey boys to spare.. another cheese I used since I was a kid and is great for defense.. double or triple crenulations prevent assassins from scaling your walls theyll be forced to attack, mangonels to constantly pelt your neighbors nonstop which cripples their eco.. which is basically how I survive some of these missions early on.. youll have to do some clever placement 1 by 1 manually but its worth it and yes put that speed down to 20 until you get your bearings straight. Great vid, its not exploiting.. its just clever use of game mechanics!
Theres a trick i discovered where you can farm trees. its nothing fancy but if you only build 1 woodcutter, this allows for the trees to grow without interuption and you can end up with endless supply of trees and wood. thats how i play this level.
The maze and firethrowers was a nice touch, I didn't think of that. I made a maze out of the moat in front of the towers instead and killed everyone with crossbowmen. And I grew hops on the farmland. It took me almost a full day to beat this mission.
50 crossbow on 2 towers with a few shield to keep them alive should be enough to kill everything that comes your way, and just in case theres multiple armored armies attacking, u should have monks stationed under the turrets backside to kill whatever slips through. cows are a horrible choice in my opinion that armor is way too cheap, however making alcohol for the population is possible even with only 1 green spot, tried it with 58 population. with this, i had negated the no food -8 popularity, and i set up a cathedral for the base +2, and put a few more 250 gold churches(?) so that i could get some passive tax money too. didnt use negative fear factor, not enough units to use for both attack and defense. another suggestion, is to use crossbowman and shields to attack as well, theres too many armored units that makes horse archers too much of an issue, not to mention the heavy requirements for for defense makes your offensive army very small, so you need high damage with small number of units. crossbowmen can easily clear towers even when theyre 60-70. just have like 50 shields too and send them always separately to the same spot and they will clear the enemy castle walls.
hi i really love your content especially beacuase its funny and mainly cause you helped me beat MISTY RIVER :) anyway i just wanted you to do a toturial on how to beat Mission "Thorns Between Roses" OR Mission "Twist In The Tale" THANK YOU!
If you build a farm, then klick the farm, press pause, klick ohn the "zZ" twice (break then start work agein) so ghere are walking 2 farmers on one farm. You can repeat as much as you want, food problem solved
I just beat this today. Pretty sure they didn't actually expect you to complete the game. This was insane and took 237 in game years -about 8 hours/ I got my base sorted out at 20 speed but played the rest at 90 - you need eight hands and proper hot keys. Seems like I could've made my life a lot easier with tower placement and leather production. I squeezed 4 towers in and replaced the balista with mangonels, Also squeezed lookout towers behind. I saw your 75 speed full game and felt inspired to do it myself. Honestly never even used a firethrower - haven't played this since I was a kid and don't remember the enemies using them either.
I use ballista en masse instead of mangonel because it can wreck the enemy siege engines from afar. And this is the only mission where I finally gave up & use chicken (all 3 chickens are intact in my Warchest Trail)
As a fan of Trebuchets, I use them both at defense as well as laying siege without taking too much damage from enemies. With protection, Trebuchets can almost counter anything. This mission is sooo unbalanced that I have to lay hands on Cheat Engine and Auto Cliker to survive the early stage of this match. Anyway, a really great guide as always sire, and it's good to see you upload videos again also.
Yeah that's one of the difficult parts of this mission! Which is why I use fire ballistas, they're expensive but they hit like a truck, pretty efficient for pushing out and taking out the enemy garrison!
This mission took many hours to complete. I enclosed my keep with moats in the very beginning and until you build a gatehouse with bridge the attacks are much weaker. Once the bridge is in place ai started trying to fill in the moats and scale the gatehouse. Army of fire ballistas were more important than crossbows. I defeated first 2 ai with pikemen and fire ballista. Max army size is a huge problem on this mission. I had to siege the ai until they ran out of money before i could kill them
Took me 8 hours and several full armies. How many times do you start making a move to push out and then Omar sends 100+ horse archers? I couldn't make any headway with the wolf with less than 20 catapults which were all destroyed a few times. I used my entire stone stock pile, which was around 3000 from saving/defending my base for hours. I then spent like 20K on stone. Still wasn't enough. The dude to the north, I think it was a Nazir, was crippled by my single mangonel tower able to pepper his gatehouse from across the river. Then I snuck like 40 macemen past the wolf to execute.
I recently discovered that you can cheese your way by placing an apple farm in that green area then pressing on the farm pause the game hault your worker then remove the hault another farmer will work there without the first farmer leaving his work i made up to 8 farmers in a single apple farm and here you go full granary with 8+ happiness food 💃
I've seen someone beat the lords using a bunch of horse archers and assassins. Some players can trigger the fire pits with horse archers and manage to not lose their whole army from it.
Oh yeah, horse archers are probably my favorite mercenary unit.. I'll he honest they're almost overpowered if you amass 200-300+. Even fully manned towers with archers and ballistae go down easy, crossbows can take them out pretty quick but you'd have to have quite a few.. shields + horse archers is a colossal pain in the ass.
Hi Jefflenious, I just started in stronghold and I have a question. At minute 4:33 how do you get your troops to kill the enemies automatically? Thanks and keep up the awesome videos!
Ranged units always attack automatically while they are standing still (except for horse archers, who will also automatically attack while moving). There are some cases where ranged units are able to attack without getting targeted themselves (e.g. standing directly behind a rock), but those are rare.
another cheesy method to do this is to rush wolf with assassins (using waypoints instead of moving them manually - faster), you get 10k+ gold and then can set up your defenses much better... however I was only able to do it on 20 speed so idk
How do you erase your own moat? I exited my area in the front and killed Khalif first. That was a huge pain in the ass being surrounded by 3 castles. Didnt know you could turn your moat back to earth...
I beat this once with horse archer spamming. crossbows on towers as usual but no ballistas for siege stuff, I had horse archers sally forth and kill the siege engines. after doing this for a while and saving up like 300 horse archers I could clear them out one by one
That's because of UCP, some of the castles are slightly improved Main goal was to fix some castles (Like Saladin's) which didn't have enough population to support it! And they added a few adjustments to some other ones too!
I have completed this mission 4,5 times but this time its been 4 days. i am a sort of at balance with the enemy. They attack me, i attack then and after that we start reinforcing our ranks. Its like we are stuck :) hahhaha playing since 2005/06 and still its the best
Was there anything else you'd planned to upload or only this? I'm asking since that's already done before and this is most likely just a confirmation video that the trick still works.
The easiest mission. Just 2 steps: organize defence, then attack. Thank you so much for reading this comment and I hope you learned a few things from it.
I hate missions like this not because its hard but because of my stupid tower ballistas not shooting at the enemy siege engines until i manually target them which is sooo annoying. I can put 6 towers with 6 ballistas but if i dont check them for a while few catapults can destroy some of my towers even tho my stupid ballistas could have easily destroyed them even before they could do any damage. I tried everything but just couldnt get those damn ballistas to prioritise the enemy siege engines. Its becomes so annoying when enemy keep spamming catapults in missions like this.
It's not trash it was cool, but definitely under developed! Although the "steam edition" is still broken and unplayable (Constant lag spikes) and I tried making a few videos but people here aren't really into it!
The chokepoint is really easy to hold and there's plenty of resources for you to work with on your side (Except the nearest stone quarry) Wall of the only entrance from the river, put a few towers fill them with archers/crossbowmen and move out once you have a big enough army, should be really easy if you've already done the previous missions

Make wall near townhall and tower far from the wall is more better, because the catapult will target the wall first not the tower
