  • Join me on a trip through the beautifully carved canyons of Utah. Over the Memorial day weekend some friends and I made our way down Granary canyon, which is broken up into two sections. The second of which features more difficult rappels and a monster 197 ft. rappel.

    Get shots😍 beautiful canyon!
    A little side note. Since you are an avid gear guy and seek out more efficient ways of not only packing light but useful gear you might find these tips useful: For longer raps and canyons like these it’s good to carry two ropes and a pull cord. Pull cords save you from having to use your second rope which should be in case of emergency. Also I would recommend for safely on longer raps a rig releasable could be used Incase someone gets stuck, hurt etc. I bet you used the two ropes to give more friction to the device however a $40 max Investment in a canyon rappel device (pirana, CRITR, totem, ATS or squirrel) would also save from using two ropes because you can add friction even as you rappel. Also some sort of stuff sack or canyon rope bag will also protect your rope from sand and other elements and also super easy to keep rope from bundling. We canyonners in Utah view the sandstone like little shards of glass that can wear or get sucked up in the sheath of the ropes. So trying to prolong the life of your rope by keeping it protected as you can is a. good skill to have.
    Well I hope you found these tips useful if you want to do more canyons. Utah has the most beautiful slots not many have the chance to witness!
    I really appreciate the work you have put into your outdoor adventure guide and have the kindness to share it with all of us.
    You have definitely helped me in backpacking gear.
    Thank you,
    Also if have questions about Utah canyons or would like to do more or gear doesn’t hesitate to ask. I have been doing canyons for three years and help instructors at the u of u.

      Old post, but thanks for helping clue this guy in. I have no idea what purpose a video like this serves, other than screaming, "Look at me!", while lamely avoiding telling anyone where they are climbing (Take-Out Beach crags), failing to include any shots of anchors that might actually be useful to someone, using crappy, potentially ankle-breaking technique, and stepping on crypto immediately before warning everyone to not step on crypto. What a tool.

    how was it setting up a tarp in the desert, I live in southern Utah. I know it's possible but is convenient or more of hassle?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  8 лет назад

      It really depends on the location. It was mostly easy here, because there was a firm but loose crust of soil on top of the underlying rock (As there is in most places). But when that crust thins out into just rock, it becomes near impossible to use stakes and then it becomes a hassle. You can generally find somewhere easy to set up though. If not, I improvise with trees, heavy rocks, and a stake jammed into a crack here and there.

      +Joe Brewer thanks I pretty much figure that. I'll probably be going with a freestanding for desert and tarp for mountains. again thanks!

    You've basically conquered the mountains of the US...so this is naturally the next thing to conquer...the canyons of Utah and Arizona...and possibly some stuff in Nevada or New Mexico as well.
