Why is DeMar DeRozan’s Fit with the Kings WEIRD?!

  • DeMar DeRozan being acquired by the Sacramento Kings was…. A bit surprising.
He’s undoubtedly and talent upgrade on that roster and is still one of the best scorers in the NBA. But his fit seemed…. Odd.
But why? Why is the fit weird?
Is it the pace the Kings play with? The Bulls played very slow last year, 28th in the NBA in pace. But the Kings were barely in the top half of the league at 14th.
Is it the spacing? The Kings light the beam because they have 3 shooters around De-Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis right? Well, those shooters: Malik Monk, Keegan Murray, and Kevin Huerter in particular, were mostly in the mid 30% range from 3.
    So what is it???
Well. I figured it out. It’s the area of the floor that DeRozan, Fox, and Sabonis all like to play through. And that’s the challenge Mike Brown will have to solve to make this “big 3” ish group of stars work.

Talent upgrade for sure! Fit TBD. Goal should be fighting for 4-6 seed realistically.

So much focus on DeMar's 3pt shooting. But there is one huge difference between DeRozan and most other not so great 3pt shooters, you still can' leave DeMar open at 3, and no, that's not cause of his 3pt shooting. If you actually studied DeRozan's play, you would see that nobody leaves him open at the 3, at least teams try to avoid it. It's because you can't give him space, he will attack midrange and you're already beat.

I’m not particularly concerned with the 3pt shooting. As I said in the video, the part that needs figured out to me is where their 3 guys operate on the floor. They all spend a lot of time occupying the same space.

    You did not mention Monk??

He was mentioned. 35% 3 point shooter. But I didn’t feel as though he was overly relevant as his game isn’t so heavily focused on the same area of the floor as the other 3. He’s going to be Monk with or without DeRozan.

They lived and died by the 3. They also had problems finishing games with only fox and monk being able to play iso ball. The fit will be fine....

I’m optimistic it will be good. I’m just interested to see how they make it fit together.
