Raiders were defending Super Bowl champions in 1981 but finished 7-9 and went scoreless through a three week stretch but bounced back 2 years later and won Super Bowl XVIII
The NFL was transitioning from a business happy to be co tenets with Baseball teams to a business where the NFL team knew it was the bigger property and wanted to maximize its cash flow by playing in doors or playing in Los Angeles.
This is fantastic stuff. I am writing from India and was a Graduate student in the U.S throughout the 80's and worked there up until mid 90's. Sundays during the NFL season were significant days for me and used to look forward to the telecasts (i even went to the Bears playoff games in 1985 (will never forget the missed punt of the Giants)). I watched NFL on television here in India after more than 2 decades. Quite horrible. It looks like they are playing touch football where a little bit of extra contact is allowed. What happens around minute 4 will now be called; and everything from being unkind to the quarterback or breathing near quarterback will be attributed. Look at the lateral pursuit and tackling by linebackers on both sides. Never saw this even once during the current years playoffs. Pass rush? that is a laugh. Tackling? What tackling? No wonder running backs regularly rush for a million yards each season and the QBs pass for two million yards. No WR ever is going to tackled. Because even looking at a WR will be called as pass interference. Sorry for sounding like some old geezer living in the past and glorifying every that is old. But this not some ancient history that i am referring to. And the T.V commentary. What horrors. Compare this Merlin Olson and Dick Enberg or Summerall and Madden. OOh. Many thanks for these fantastic posts. Hari
It was like "The Rains Of Ranchipur" in the Bay Area that Autumn and early Winter. I remember because thanks to Reaganomics I was one of a million job seekers out it every day. I remember at least two umbrellas collapsed on me.
after this game, Oakland Raider fans would have to wait another 14 seasons until the Silver and Black would play in Oakland again ... the Raiders packed up and moved to L.A after this season
I think they did play a couple of pre season games in the Coliseum during the exile in Los Angeles. And they kept their training facilities in Alameda for a couple of years too. The coaches, players and training staff were intrastate commuters for little while.
The worst decision in the franchise’s history. They had such a fervent fan base here in the Bay Area before leaving. They would have definitely been the more popular team (or at least as equally as popular as the Niners) had they never left. Smh
I did not watch the NFL until 1982.I was in 2nd grade in 1981,my first game was my visit to Brooklyn,NY as the summer was ending.Sept 12,1982,Week 1 the Miami Dolphins won a slug fest battle against the New York Jets at Shea Stadium 45-28.I do believe it was a short seaso due to a strike at the time.
Buddy Ryan thought he was going to be head coach after this season. Last year with grey face masks. R.I.P Jeannie Morris, Bob Chandler, Dave Dalby, Todd Christensen, Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, Buddy Ryan, Neill Armstrong, and probably many more.
Chicago Bears beat Oakland Raiders 23 to 6 December 13th 1981 it was tough to swallow the pill for the Raiders last game at Oakland Coliseum 8 days later they lose to the Chargers at the end of 1981 season no longer Oakland rip Oakland football 1960 thru 1981 the next year they moved to Los Angeles became Los Angeles Raiders for 1982 season
He had a lot of raw talent, but the Bears lousy coaching staff completely failed to develop him. He was the starter basically because the other two options (Avellini, Phipps) were even worse in that situation, and I don't think any amount of effective coaching could have salvaged either one of those two.
It turned out with Reagan funnelling millions into international insurgency (including office supplies) during the work stoppage for the Unions in Gdansk, by cutting relief, unemployment benefits here at home, funded by closing plants and government departments and then fires OUR fellow American Union workers (PATCO) for going on strike. (????)
Was this the low point of the Walter Payton era in Chicago? I think he ended with a 3.6 per carry average that year and the team was in total disarray, the last year before Ditka
I believe this game was only televised in Chicago. I lived in South Bend, Indiana, which was and is a "secondary" market for the Bears, but in lieu of this game, CBS aired the Eagles at Dallas. The game would've been blacked out in the Bay Area if it was not sold out. Listed attendance was 40,384, which was more than 10,000 below capacity, although it's possible all of those were no-shows (today, the NFL lists official attendance as seats sold, not the actual crowd). The Raiders were 7-7 and eliminated from playoff contention based on the early games this day (edit: they were eliminated the previous day when the Jets beat the Browns). The Bears were a dismal 4-10, but won their last 3 games and went 4-0 against the AFC West, including an upset in the season finale against Denver to help knock the Broncos out of the playoff race.
John Manier It seems like the Bears were definitely playing the role of sore spoilers that season. Going undefeated against the AFC West but going nowhere against everybody else can't get you anywhere in the NFL, Chicago.
Classic NFL how's it goin, ya wouldn't happen ta have patrots at Raiders 76? Raiders at packers 87 saints at Raiders 85 or Raiders at Falcons 85?...be good!!... OAKLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!RAIDERS!!!!! FAEVA!!!!!🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🐘🐼🐕🐬🐳🐅🐻🐖🐄
Off the bench, he was the best. But when it came to being the man, he just didn’t know how to handle it particularly Chicago media leading up the game.

Marc Wilson fumbled, threw interceptions every damn game, in 2 years they could have had Dan Marino and at least 3 more Super Bowl wins.

The '81 season was the end of an era for the Raiders in Oakland and Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota
I was thinking the same watching this, I still can't come to grips with the Vikings being an indoor team.
The NFL was transitioning from a business happy to be co tenets with Baseball teams to a business where the NFL team knew it was the bigger property and wanted to maximize its cash flow by playing in doors or playing in Los Angeles.
Last game in Oakland for 14 years...
Bears sure had a habit of punishing the hell out of the Raiders when ever they played in the 80s
3-0 vs Oakland during the 80s, 0-3 in the 70s 1-3 in the 90s 3-2 in the 2000s
In particular the 1984 match up was brutal for both teams.
The beginning of the 85 bears DEFENSE.

To this day I have no clue what the hell anyone saw in Marc Wilson.
It was Al Davis.
Think Jamarcus Russell
He was tall, around 6'6". That's basically all he had going for himself. Al really liked tall QBs.
Didn't know KGO 810AM, which airs Cal (Berkeley) Golden Bears football & some San Francisco 49ers games, was the radio home of the Raiders in 1981
Vince Young played in the last game in Oakland as a bear then he was with the Raiders when they returned
Vince Evans
I was at this game. It was a dreary, rainy day and an awful game and the Raiders were leaving to go to LA
It was like "The Rains Of Ranchipur" in the Bay Area that Autumn and early Winter.

18:35 Samurai with the stop.
It's a shame oakland was so banged up this year wish they played the 49ers in the super bowl

Sweetness!
Oakland stunk up the joint in 81,like pittsburgh had bursts of championship play, but couldnt sustain it!!!
Steelers were done when Terry Bradshaw broke his hand in Oakland on Ted Hendricks' helmet.
Never seen this game. Thanks for posting.
The last game in Oakland.

Art Shell is still alive
Marc Wilson looked funny in that uniform and helmet. He looked like some kind of bird. He and Ray Guy looked similar and very funny in a uniform
Boy i hated Marc Wilson!
He and Eli Manning have that same look; like they're about to burst into tears
Ray Guy was a Phenom and shouldn't in any way be compared with Wilson.
@@ieblais5767 Why?
Al Davis sure had a thing for sucky tall QBs....

Vince Evans couldn't pass gas
240 yards passing and 3 TD's in this game against the Raiders. You're obviously too critical.
Why in the world was Vince Evans a starter. Smh.

The Bears won how many Super Bowls??
Bears had good teams with no QB.
The Cawd Squad No. not even Jim McMahon who was okay!
Two teams going nowhere in 1981.
Oh geez, now I will never know how the Crisis In Poland turned out :)

Yes. The Raiders closed the 1981 season with a loss at San Diego.

Vince Evans was terrible.
So was Wilson.
Evans played for a "terrible" offense.
He was National Champion and won a Rose Bowl while at S.C.

He played pro football from 1977-1995. So apparently the only thing terrible is your comment. 👎
