- Power vs Power. A 70 Ford Mustang Mach 1 351 Cleveland and 68 Chevrolet SS Chevelle 396 run each other down. Fun when your 18, scary when your 40 something. Clean underwear needed after this ride. Both original numbers matching cars. 28,000 original miles on the Stang. Sorry about the camera angle. Video tapping was last thing on my mind.
Led Zep going in the background. Mad.
love this good old Muscle-Car-Feeling, i have a 66 GTO Six Pack and a 1970 Mach 1 351 here in Germany!!!!!
drive carefully
best
I never, ever lost to a Chevrolet in my '70 Mach 1 - 351C 4 barrel - my favorite engine!
that was cool.... i have a 1970 mustang sports roof, aka fastback...but not a mach 1...plain jane sports roof mustang..came with a 302..i put a 351c...and a c6 wit shift kit..i love it...it excites me to the inside when i drive it..almost as good as ...great vid
My dad owned a 69 sports roof with the mach one interior 351 Windsor mild cam . It would break them loose in all 4 gears in that top loader
That Stang was ready to take him before they hit that turn!
You know damn well that Mustang could take that Chevelle!
Cleveland all day . Ford period .
You just took me back in time listening to Led Zeppelin In The Light in my 351 CJ Mustang life doesn't get much better.
351 Clevelands in Torinos and Mustangs used to out run those 396s all day long.
Slant Six had a mustang two with a 302 raced a 396 nova dude wanted to fight when we beat him called us liars said it was. No 302 gunna beat his 396 opened the hood and he about shit 302 whooped his396 on 13 inch tires
Yup, I was one of those guys that put the 396 on trailers. Did a 68 camaro, 69 nova and a Chevelle...none stood a chance. The Cleveland pulled wildly!!!
Hell i used to out run 396's 454's 496's and 502's with mine and I had w 2 barrel and single exhaust. Hell I used to spot them and sometimes I'd take a couple of plug wires off.
Had a stock 300hp 351Cleveland, against a stock 340 mopar in a demon, not even close, got destroyed by the mopar, Cleveland need a bigger cam, headers and bigger carb, then they were respectable. Hats off to the 340 and dz 302!
Fun times. Giggle factory, time machines. Nice rides. More videos PLEASE !
Have had both engines in cars I have owned. the 67 chevelle SS 375HP 396 is a one heck of a running engine the solid lifter camshaft sounds nice. Engine makes a lot of torque getting the power down is tricky without slicks. The Cleveland is quite a runner once you get them wound up. It was in a 71 Mach 1 I put on closed chambered 4V heads Lunati 540. Lift camshaft cant remember the duration. But I think it was 236@ .050. Trans was a C6 with 2500 stall and 3.89 rear gear. Wish I had them back.
Miss my cars 71 cuda and 79 z28. Thanks for bringing back good memories awesome vid.
Great cars. Got a 81 Camaro that we're working on.

Ohhhh Really? My first ride was a '79 Camaro. I just about hand waxed the paint off it. I was always looking to trade it off for an '80 or '81 Z28, but my folks were too smart for that! LoL
Had a 73 grande--with the 351C--was a beast burn both rear tires--easily. and yes they had tons of torque--yall can have the Windsor--ill take another Cleveland any day over it.
looks like that 351 can hold its own pretty good with that 396
clevelands are a great engine torque monsters with the right set up.
matt penick so.
.for those of us that don't know engines..what make this better than a Windsor? Or other big engines?
Easier to get speed and torque out of a Cleveland, but Cleveland's are more rare than Windsor's, the 351c was only made from 70-74. The cleveland has a canted valve lay out, with HUGE ports and valves. There are 2 different clevelands that is there were 2v and 4v. Both had more than generous ports, and valves. The cleveland had 2.19" intake valves, and 1.71" exhaust valves. The intake ports could easily fit a lime into them. Better to go with a Cleveland in my opinion.
The heads! Hugs intake valves on a Cleveland, and the valves are staggered and canted, meaning the intake valves are closer to the intake runners and the exhaust valves are closer to the exhaust runners..
@@ddave7026 ford built the 351c for nascar, but nascar screamed an said their to dam fast.
very cool thanks, enjoyed it very much
That's back when cars were just cool.
love that old muscle.....
Takes you back 30 years when that's what we could afford for a first car.
There are some muscle car ruining curves in that section of road leading to ????lake. Great sound, fun ride.
That Cleveland sounds like a stroker which would make its over all displacement almost equal with the 396. Both very nice cars.
Wow! What's so crazy is I have a Mach 1 the exact same color! I've never seen another one before
If I had a choice between the two, I'll take both.

Is it weird that last weekend I was driving my 2003 Mach 1 to In the Light too? :)
Who cares about a 2003 mustang
They have very good taste in rock
Ah now that takes me back 25 years! It just isn't summer without kick ass muscle cars and Zeppelin! Awesome vid Chewy!
Zeppelin on a cassette deck yet! Just need the Frisbee and cute girlfriend sitting on the hood. Oh, those were the days.

43 years, GOOD TIMES BAD TIMES
Man I love this
wish they had ended it at the Drag strip so we would know which was faster
so.

Dave with a fire axe standing on a hill of skulls Easier to get speed and torque out of a Cleveland, but Cleveland's are more rare than Windsor's, the 351c was only made from 70-74. Dave with a fire axe standing on a hill of skulls Cleveland's are a lot easier to beef up from factory built than Windsor's, but it also costs more money due to the rareness of the cleveland
The Cleveland was designed as a true race car engine then detuned for the street with a low lift cam. Trans am racing and NASCAR were the target. The big blocks in NASCAR were making 500 hp at 7000 rpm, and this cylinder head and engine was designed to make 500 hp at 7000 rpm on 351 Ci. Not as sexy as a hemi but just as powerful. Needs a .600 lift cam, valve springs, big carb. and the fun begins.
My father's Cleveland had a 600 lift cam .294 duration it was mean sounding would rattle the tin on his 30 by 60 barn
Too much awesome in one video Matt, pace yourself! Those are real cars. Lots of extra horses and very little brakes!
Very little brakes when 4 wheel hubs lol. Made to launch straight and go fast
I bet you anything, both had similar horsepower.
mach1 sounds far from stock
so does the Chevelle
Nice cars i love the Chevelles
Chevrolet is faster
y'all can't even drive a mustang right.
meh lawnmower video would be better
GM sucks always has and always will!!!
Got that right . Ford here .
If you turn up the radio a little more we won't have to listen to the engine...
