Based on the "Counting Technique" by Dr Stephen LaBerge, and combined with the "Anchor Technique" by me (Daniel Love), this lucid dreaming test can also be used as a lucid dreaming induction technique.
Use it regularly during the day to develop your focus and patience, and use it at night during a Wake Back To Bed (WBTB) or Morning Nap technique.

With some aptemts later I did it,
Edit: nice calm voice
Passed :))) I’m surprised Bc my attention span is terrible
Passed as i thought I would 👍 great content and dedication ❤️
I made it! Although I'd did need to go to the toilet inbetween and my mind wandered quite often. So I'm just going to try to do this daily till I can keep focused trough the intire thing. Also I have a question how exactly do you know you're dreaming whilst counting
I passed the test with not a lot of distractions
1-80 Okay
80-150- Getting bored
150-200- Insanely bored
200-300- Madness starts setting in
300-350- AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH
Just goes to show how difficult these techniques are doesn't it! (also double all of those scores for how I felt recording this! )
My favorite part was when you asked if I was dreaming
😂😂😂😂😂😂
You never fail to impress me with how dedicated you are when it comes to teaching Lucid Dreaming Daniel, super well done for another amazing and helpful video👍
I think he wants to know if we’re dreaming.
Ur R dEtektivv!

This is the BEST lucid dreaming channel on RUclips. I had been using Explore Lucid Dreaming's videos and techniques but none of them worked. I tried this one and first try, I got a lucid dream. (admittedly I became lucid in a nightmare but I wasn't scared because I knew it was just a dream) I love how honest you are. None of the 'Lucid dream tonight. 100% Works every time' going on. Thank you for making these videos!
I didn't expect to pass, but once i really got into a focused rhythm I just kept going until the end. That was a much more rewarding experience than mindlessly scrolling through social media.
I passed the test, sometimes didn't have complete awarenes (I'm a beginer), but overall I had a good amount of lucidity. Glad you did the test, every time I try to do this I lose the number. 😂
Congratulations, it's that kind of focus that pays off. Try the recording during a WBTB (remember to turn autoplay off!) and hopefully it will lead to lucidity.
@@LucidDreamPortal Thanks, I'll surely try it tonight.
Passed. There's hope for me yet. Thank you so much for your patience and dedication, Daniel. Truly appreciated 👍
I had to do a reality test twice during the video (and one afterwards) because I shifted from saying "Am I dreaming?" to "I am dreaming" without intention, but I made it through! I really like those interactive videos, thank you so much for sharing, this is amazing!
PS: I've always been having trouble to focus, but being able to count with you together really helps! Honestly, I *wanted* to clilck away, but I told myself, nope, I'm gonna do this now!
That was weird, was listening all the way and wondered why you stopped. Completely lost track of time. Don't know what to make of it? Shot for the video.
Just saw this when I finished my daily exercise! Yay, this makes my day, I'm super pumped at the moment to start my LD practice with a fresh mind. Will do it later today, though, after my meditation. I'll report back!
That should've been RE-start.
Made it! I found it helpful to count for myself along to your voice from time to time to have more focus. But around 300 I miscounted once unfortunately, I am glad you made this video, it's a really good focusing exercise along meditation. Recently I did the counting method in the middle of the night to induce a maintained awareness lucid dream, it was the first time I had success with this subject, thanks to your great youtube channel and your 19 day beginner course! I'll gladly leave a huge super-thanks once I'm not that broke anymore :D thank you for your incredible work
I did this as my daily meditation to spice things up, didn't get hypnagogia, but at one time at the end while I was focusing on the numbers I felt my eyes open and I thought I failed, but when I opened them I instantly snapped back into reality and my eyes were actually closed the whole time. That opening sensation was fake, but felt so real.
This video was great! I made it though and tried to stay as focused as I could, thank you to all the dedication you put into this channel!
Absolutely amazing stamina from you in making this video! very impressive.... happy to say that I got to the end - only just found your channel and I am awaiting your book in the post - thanks for everything you do x
Thanks Aeowyn, welcome to the channel it's lovely to have you here. And well done on getting to the end of the video! I hope you enjoy the book and find it helpful in your adventures :)
Those 20 minutes went a lot faster then I thought!
Aside from doing a test at the very start I passed! Its amazing the effort you put into each of your videos, this one is no exception. Thank you!
Wow forget about our patience..
I am really impressed about how patient you are to actually count for 20 mins
This will be interesting to try out as a sort of anchor!
Interesting. The video came just as I was about to meditate. So I let you count me through my meditation. When I count alone at night, I either count for hours or immediately fall asleep.
Please let me know how you get along!
Thanks for this! Great way to mix lucid dream practice and meditation practice.
You're most welcome!
I've heard about lucid dreaming before but never gave it much thought until recently, I started watching some videos on it. Today I came across this video and channel and have watched a few and they are very informative. I made it to the end of the video and I guess that's a step in the right direction on the begining of my journey. Thank you for the videos.
I actually made it to the end! Thank you so much for making content about lucid dreaming. 😊👍
Counting is good = math = veterinary assistant = saving animals and Lucid Dreaming and no believe me this is not the most boring video on RUclips actually this is very relaxing, a challenge like this I'm not clicking away!😎and I passed
Oh wow! test passed! hoorrray! :D Thanks a lot Daniel for all the effort!!!
I made through! I gotta admit though it wasn’t as easy as it sounded, it’s still a really good practice for learning to keep your awareness high and realize when you are losing it.
I love how you put in the effort to heart all the comments even on old videos nice work👍
I try to make sure to read as many comments as possible :)
Thank you for this ❤
Love this test Daniel.
Love it brilliant will use it tonight
Cool vid overall, was actually a lot easier than I expected, though I am unsure if I was like "focused enough" while counting or not. Now I just wish this could actually help me with lucid dream induction.
I'm sure there's duller videos on RUclips than this - this was quite relaxing.
The idea of being focused is odd as I was counting with you, but, I was also listening to the conversation happening in a few rooms away (they speak loud and the TV is cranked up). I felt focused, as I was still keeping up the pace, but I don't know if it was automatic or not. I will say I probably passed with maybe a high B, as I did get too caught up in their conversation for a quick second.
Funny thing is, my video buffered twice! I thought "oh, this is him trollinv" but, if it truly was made to be an induction, that would defeat the point. That caused me to get distracted, as well as me moving to lay down and listen with my eyes closed. I will say though, I did get hypnagogia at around 120 and at 240, both fading away after. The 240 was way more realistic in terms of how it looked, but, it was less realistic in the sense that it looked like it was glitching. My head also started to hurt around 302.
Interesting video for sure, even if it was hard to get through! I'll definitely use this for sleep at some point, as I'm definitely out of it just from a "testing" perspective.
I made it and recited with you the whole time, except for a few numbers here and there because of yawning. lol! That was not easy. It amazes me how hard it is to focus for 20 minutes. At bedtime I often fall asleep within a minute or two, but if I do the tricks to keep myself awake longer, that keeps me awake way longer than I want.
Back to lucid dreaming after 3 months,so exited
That's a great meditation which I'm sure I'll come back to both in the day and at sleep time, thank you!
Currently I’m trying to find the balance for achieving a wake initiated lucid dream.
So far I’ve noticed I just let the visualization or what I chose to do as the anchor hang in the back of my mind spontaneously and let my brain wonder off almost letting both run together.
Amazing test! Passed with first attempt!
Jesusssss, this goes to how how situmlated I am EVEN THOUGH I DON'T USE TIKTOK/ INSTAGRAM EVER, ETC, I deleted them.
This was actually painful for the first 200, and past 300 I got use to it, I even started to chant with you, good stuffff.
this goes to show what lucid dreaming is all about, sometimes extreme boredom!!!
Am surpised by how tired I got, this is next level reflection
I think a 2.0 Challenge to this would trying to get rid of All/most thoughts.
Even though I passed I still thought about other things which is very interesting...
Maybe expert LDers don't even think about anything at all...!?
I was going to listen your waterfall meditation video but saw this and decided that I will meditate with this then! Made it to the end and didn't even fall asleep 😅
Had a brief lucid dream last night, first one in ages! 👍
Fantastic news Dan, I'm assuming as a result of this video?
@@LucidDreamPortal actually nope, only just watched it this afternoon as working loads at the mo making 3D fire! RTs we’re low for the day, had watched the rest of your gaming video late in the evening though.
alright I did it, I'm gonna be coming back to do this regularly
I’m proud of myself…wondered what number you’d get to…now I know!
I wondered that too, and my sister asked me.
I sorta fell into a trance while doing this and started to count along and made it through. wooo!
D Love ,
After the repetitious "Are You Dreaming " one could only imagine that you may have found yourself having a go at this whilst in your dream machine the very night following our lesson 🤔
Thanks always for your efforts. CHEERS !
Thank you Daniel. Such a good exercise. So glad I have passed the test 😅 I was counting and visualising the numbers at the same time to stay more focused. Will try it again with WBTB :-)
Congratulations, great job! It's certainly hard to stay focused on something this repetitive. Please let me know how you get along with your WBTB
I ended up writing “ are you dreaming” over and over in a notebook as he was counting 😆
I made it...I knew I would coz I use to lucid dream way more in High School and College...And in those days I had probably the best lucid dreams ever...Nowadays I'd just have them sort and this makes me so sad, but I've already had a couple of lucid dreams this year, it beats last year already since I had some time to just relax at home...Anyway, if I could, I'd be catching you guys in dreamland
In my defense I put this on 10 minutes before boarding a plane.
HOLY CRAP I PASSED THE TEST, I am actually amazed with myself, I think i personally have what it takes to allow myself to do these techniques
idk what it is but before the counting even started just the idea of using it for training and sleeping just made me like it and i liked the vid lol
i love this video already and im not even 5 minutes in!
And I’m going to try this tonight thank you if this works for I can get my first vivid lucid dream
Does it count: “Damn, I’d better watch it in the evening because I just woke up and don’t want to waste time in the morning”) 😂
I'll use this tonight, thank you very much!
But if there is any jumpscare... I'll cancel this channel!! 😅
Yay! I made it!
The First time yesterday I fell asleep too fast, but now I meditated while listening. My foot became numb 🥲
Thank you for the video, was surely a lot of work, recording all that. 😅
Did it, was drifting a bit every now and then tho
I passed! Is it random that you fluctuate your voice in asking if I am dreaming? Thank you for the effort in making great content. 😊
Thank you so much James, and congratulations on passing! The fluctuations are planned, as interruptions in tone, especially during repetition, can help bring about a spike in attention and awareness.
I don't know if I actually passed. I usually exercise for a little when watching videos sometimes, and had no idea what I was getting into when doing that this time. I definitely wasn't relaxing at first because of that. At first, I was going to click off and then on after I finished exercising, but I decided to just watch straight through anyway. I don't know why, but I really enjoyed watching that, especially after exercising! Probably just the fact I wasn't otherwise doing anything for once. Will have to do again sometime when I'm not exercising. I thought it was interesting that you actually sat down and did that for so long! There were definitely times when I was distracted because I am also doing an assignment with tracking heart rate over time, but also by the monkey mind. I tried acknowledging that and bringing myself back sort of like I do when falling asleep with Catch the Butterfly during WILDs.
I passed, and I’m using this tonight during WBTB to try and do WILD!
You know what I'm gonna listen to this tonight using a WBTB and see if I get my first lucid dream.
Remember to turn off autoplay (and good luck!) - Please report back
@@LucidDreamPortal Okay!
@@joelxl635 did it work
Ouch, i've lost on the 110 seconds pausing the video (and losing some awareness sometimes) !
I've made it thru 2 days in a row. Yesterday, I kept counting til 500.
not too difficult, there are subtle "focus cues" in the presentation of this test. one is every tenth number is emphasized, the other is a psychological effect of listening to running numbers, you will "mishear" some of the numbers, if you are aware of this effect you will use it as a prompt to keep listening and stay alert.(when using as a method of sleep induction prior to lucid dreaming the misheard number effect is a sure sign that you are drifting away from waking consciousness).
I did it!
Passed The Test!
i remember a month ago i found this video and watched the intro, than i was going to do this test but never did and i just decided to do it now. i only watched the intro a month ago and forgot about it and just jumped straight into the test today, i didnt know that i was supposed to stay focused while doing the test which i found out about after i did the whole thing...
i will just do it again with that in mind another time.
I am still listening to the test 😁
Made it!
I'm going to try this for the first time tonight. (Right now. It's 12am. Probably won't work, since I need more time for sleep...
Maybe i should try it when I go to bed at 9, eh?
Lezz gooooo I did it!
I've passed! After a while, I sort of got a sympathetic dry throat, and I'm impressed you made it through - as far as I noticed, with only one break between 99 and 100? Though I won't rule out that I might have zoned out for a bit; twice I thought you'd skipped a number, but think it was actually me who got the numbers mixed up. Well, I'll use this for WBTB later tonight, wish me luck!
Well done! (also give it a go during the night, maybe it will help you break through!). And yes, well spotted between 99-100, (frustratingly sneezed at that point!).
Frustratingly, I slept right through the WBTB alarm. I tried using it after I woke up naturally a few hours later, and for a moment, I thought I'd successfully crossed over into a dream - but then the traffic outside woke me up again.
@@mikkareads Oh that is frustrating! But also, it looks promising. Definitely worth trying a few more times :)
@@LucidDreamPortal Have you considered offering an mp3 of just the counting part without the intro in your shop? (Or a bundle of one mp3 WITH and one mp3 WITHOUT the introduction.) It usually takes me more than 20 minutes to fall asleep, and I can't be the only one! :-)
(I've recorded one with my own voice in the past, but that seems to not work as well, for some reason. I think hearing it said in somebody else's voice makes me more alert?)
Thanks!
?????
????
Thank you so much James. I'm not sure how I missed this at the time. But I really appreciate your support!
???????
26 minutes well spent. 🥳
I woke up at the night to watch this video but I can't found it so I realise I'm dreaming then I wake myself up to watch this video and become lucid now I know why I can't become lucid because I'm stupid 😂😂💔💔
Just curious about something. But first, thank you. My question is, why do you share this info? What's your driving force?
Aloha to you and thanks again. You have assisted me in being more present and aware in my moments throughout the day.
Lucid dreaming has been an absolutely beautiful journey and friend since my earliest childhood, it has transformed my relationship with my mind and the universe. More than anything my passion is just to share some of that wonder with others. That's my primary motivation :)
Based on a weird echo thing that happened at a certain point, I think I just learned the answer to life, the universe, and everything. ;-)
I counted till 1245 after the video ended but couldnt managed to fall asleep. Ill try it again tonight.
wait it ended so much sooner than i thought i was gonna check how much time had passed at a certain number but it never got there
also i think it was 150 but the “are you dreaming” wasn’t emphasized
I stared at the screen for so long that I actually developed an after-image when I closed my eyes lol
Well this is strange I have not watch RUclips in a few months now and I thought about watching a video if I'm ready for lucid dreaming and you literally just posted one so i preformed a reality check but I'm not dreaming but the next moment I wil think that I could be so i keep that in mind Love your content bro keep making It I keep trying to get my fist lucid dream even if it takes 2 more years
That is strange!! And welcome back, i'm sure you'll get there if you stay focused!
@@LucidDreamPortal 🔥🔥🔥
I made it! My phone almost ran out of power, because it took so long. But I made it! I passed the test!
Managed to stick with it right to the end, but I did wonder a few times if you missed a number? Probably just me drifting off of course.
So if i keep rewatching this essentially its training my mind to be constantly aware? Will it have a lasting effect?
Unfortunately, I wasn't successful tonight. You counted me awake with no effort. External noise is a constant problem for me. Then I counted again myself and fell asleep very quickly, although that wasn't the plan either.
Were you trying during a WBTB or was it at the start of the night? I'd definitely recommend the former. Of course, the variables involved means that this will be a little hit and miss, but well done for putting it into practice! Please keep me up-to-date with further progress :)
@@LucidDreamPortal It was during WBTB.
Made it through, save an interruption via a scam call (the dangers of watching on mobile).
The counting method has been my main method with WBTB as my memory of touch/feeling is a bit too poor to pull off IMP. While it has yet to produce a WILD (either through incorrectly using the technique or just never nailing down my REM period correctly), it has seemed to have increased the chances I’d experience a DILD.
I have watched your video "Why is Lucid Dreaming so unpopular??" before, and you can easily consider the above video as reason number 3 😉 Personally I still wonder if you have to ask the question "Are you dreaming?" after each number is really necessary or if it's enough to just count whithout the phrase. Without the phrase I can reach rather high numbers like 1300-1500, but it becomes some kind of background thread and I can have wondering thoughts together with the counting. Very interesting is that I sometimes catch my thoughts and ask myself "Why did I stop counting?"
I PASSED! WOOHOO!
After a while it sounded like you were singing it lol
It did send me into a bit of trance!
sigh, i guess i have to finish the video to prove that i am training to become a lucid dreaming master
I passed the test 😱😱, although I almost dozed off at certain points
Complete beginner here. I passed…4 times😳. I woke up about 1:30 in the morning and thought I wanted to try this. So after a drink of water and visit to the restroom, I started the video. I felt like I was close to start dreaming a few times the first time through, but the need to swallow or a random small noise in the house would always snap me back awake. Video ended and I started it again, then again, then again. Ended up laying awake for 3 and a half hours last night, then finally had a short non-lucid dream about 5 AM until I needed to get up for work at 6. Not quite sure what i’m doing wrong, but I suspect I should have gone back to bed and tried this later when I wa a loser to REM? Any tips?
Also, I’m only about 5 days in to trying to Lucid Dream so I know it will take a lot of time and practice. I just want to know what adjustments to make in my continued efforts.
I watched this video rwice and not fall asleep.
Haven’t watched yet, but I’m guessing this will be like the video where Daniel tries to distract you for 20 minutes on end? (Ultimate test, 90% fail?)
Not quite, this is both a test and a technique combined - you'll be able to use this video during the night.
I passed the test. It was sort of relaxing, but still hard to focus on at times.
Well done. I hope this acts as a reminder to us all that the things we think sound easy, are a little more challenging in reality. Now take this concept of only having to focus on counting for 20 minutes, and expand it to "All Day Awareness" -- it soon becomes apparent how the concept is somewhat ridiculous.
I passed!
WILL I BE A LUCID DREAMER??
Yes
If you can stay focused, absolutely.
Question how to not mess up a lucid dream and wake instantly I always wake up when iam almost going lucid
Weather in the morning or when doing the techniques the first time it happened with me was because I super excited but now it always happen idk if that's because I feel lucid when iam just about to wake up or there's something wrong iam doing pls help nice vid BTW I really admire your dedication and appreciate the the work you do for us
Can I do this without wbtb?
Question.
When I did it this time time seemed to have been going by slow. I did pass. Though my mind was rather active. I was meditating the entire time though I have a question
Do you by any chance know why it seemed like time slowed down as I meditated everything was in normal speed but it without a doubt felt more than 20 minutes of meditating.
Time is very subjective and we tend to assess the passage of time by things such as number of novel events, number of thoughts etc. Meditation can often give the illusion of time slowing down as it offers us a different and more focused perspective on these things.
If time slowed down you probably found it more boring, the more fun you have the quicker time passes due to how dopamine workd.
It's pretty intersting, EX; if you try studying with a video game addiction it's actaully pretty hard to study, but if you free yourself from this society and it's consumerism than studying is pretty easy. ( Imagine a porn addict or someone who plays video games all day try to go through this whole video, it'd be impossible essientally )
It's actually very easy to be a really high achiever( Great in almost anything ), you just have to get rid of all the nonsense in life. ( This is off topic kinda but it still related to lucid dreaming )
was number skips and different ways of saying are you dreaming like faster or slower part of the test?
Normally everything in my videos has a little thought behind it - it's good to remember that even a 5 minute video can take several days to create. Hopefully that answers your question :)
@@LucidDreamPortal It answers it. I appreciate the effort love your videos
